Eating! ul

Pr a

M i n e d c i t f c

MAKE A GAME PLAN. Enjoy fruits, vegetables, and other healthy snacks before you attend events. This may help you avoid overindulging.

We all want to enjoy the holidays while staying healthy. It’s not as hard as it seems! Just focus on eating mindfully, not mindlessly. Mindful eating involves being in the moment and paying attention to what you consume. Mindless eating is just the opposite. It is eating while you’re distracted, which may result in you consuming too much or making unhealthy choices. In addition to being mindful, try these tips to avoid unhealthy weight gain during the holidays:

EAT WHEN YOU’RE HUNGRY. Determine whether you’re really hungry or if you’re reaching for food simply because it’s available. REDUCE YOUR PORTIONS. It’s OK to enjoy holiday treats, but set limits for yourself. CALL A TIMEOUT. Sip your water and put your fork down between bites. This will give your body time to recognize when you’re full. STAY FOCUSED. Enjoy the conversation and atmosphere, but be mindful of what and how much you eat.

For those of you who have never been to visit, Carabella offers the largest selection of sweaters, sportswear and outerwear in the city and many items that are exclusive such as ER Denim. Their service is second to none, because what matters most at Carabella are their customers. Need a gift, they’ve got you covered, and wrapped. They make gift giving easy and fun! Open 10-8 each day through Christmas, Sundays 12-5, Saturdays 10-5:30.

Hedy Krenn is known by colleagues and clients for loyalty, professionalism, and knowledge of this region and its unique real estate market. Hedy believes in a low pressure approach with attention to your wants and needs as a home buyer or seller. Hedy and her team’s mission is to provide each client with extraordinary service, honesty, integrity, and truth. She strives to be the top producing agent in the region. Together with Piatt Sotheby’s International Realty, they are your premier destination for all things real estate related in the Greater Pittsburgh area.

Girasole is the word for “sunflower” in Italian, and is the family surname. And, like the sunflower, Girasole traverses time, blending the old with the new. The peasant-inspired dishes and stone walls are reminiscent of the old world, and are in direct contrast to the innovative menu, chic patrons and upbeat atmosphere Their kitchen staff takes wonderful traditional Italian dishes and complements them to appeal to contemporary tastes, incorporating locally grown foods, while the ever-present family and staff provide a warm, inviting and upbeat ambience. They take pride in providing customers with not only wonderful Italian food and a superb all-Italian wine list, but also a friendly, warm and sincere desire to please your palate and touch your heart. As soon as you walk through the door you can feel the love that has enabled this sunflower to bloom for 15 years.

FUN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY AT CASTLE TOYS AND GAMES Jeff and Linda Lyden, owners of the popular family destination Castle Toys and Games, are celebrating the opening of their third Pittsburgh-area location at 500 Allegheny River Blvd. in Oakmont. “As a neighborhood toy store, we’re a local family serving local families,” says Jeff Lyden. “What you’ll find in our

50

W HI R L / DEC EMB E R 2 0 1 8

stores are items hand-selected by Linda, who founded the company 13 years ago. She continues to curate the very best for our customers in the product lines we offer.” Though the store has a boutique nature, that doesn’t mean the prices are out of reach. “Customers can get a great gift for $25 professionally wrapped and ready to go,” continues Lyden.

At all of its locations, Castle Toys and Games hosts regular in-store events such as “baby lap time” featuring sensory activities for parent and baby, a storytime with a craft activity, and a pizza and game night with games for all ages. They also have customer loyalty programs, including a “birthday vault” that a child can open for a surprise gift. A new feature of the Oakmont store will be a space designated for events such as birthday parties or a Mom’s night out, Lyden noted. He added that because the store is in the original location of the Oakmont Bakery (relocated nearby), the Lydens decided to honor that history by naming their party and creativity space “The Oakmont Makery at Castle Toys.” Aside from Oakmont, Castle Toys and Games has two other locations, one in a 100-year-old recently renovated building in downtown Beaver, and one in the Pine Tree Shoppes in Wexford. If you can’t get to the store locations, you can shop on the website and have your items shipped locally, Lyden added. “We work closely with the community and have developed relationships with local schools,” says Lyden. “So not only do we host events here at our stores, but we also have game nights in schools.” Each summer, Castle Toys and Games hosts science and craft classes, and offer a wide variety of educational STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) toys year round, including a huge variety of art supplies. One of the other community members that Castle Toys and Games has a close relationship with is Huntington Bank, which is committed to helping local businesses grow. Not only does the bank provide financial services to the company, but many bank employees are part of the toy store’s loyal customer base who appreciate the store’s devotion to fun and education alike.

WE STARTED GOING LOCAL BEFORE IT WAS TRENDY. ABOUT 150 YEARS AGO. At Huntington, we make it a point to work with those who move our community forward. As the #1 SBA lender in our region, we're proud to support local businesses and their efforts to make a difference right here in our neighborhood.

For more information visit, the store’s website at Castletoysandgames.com or call 724.933.0060.

THE GIFT OF THE SEASON: CODING GAMES Coding games that let kids build and program robots or other computer-related toys have become especially popular, said Jeff Lyden, co-owner of Castle Toys and Games. “The new Turing Tumble is one of the coolest coding games I’ve ever seen,” he notes. Marketed as a way for kids to build a “marble-powered computer” and understand how computers are built, the game teaches logic and progression skills though screenless coding game where kids manipulate pieces on a vertical board. “If they do it right, the game ends up acting like a marble run,” Lyden says. Find Turing Tumble and more coding games at one of Castle Toys and Games’ three locations or at castletoysandgames.com.

Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens’ Palm Court renovation reached an historic milestone October 11 with the installation of the final pane of glass, completing this major restoration. Guests can see this transformation firsthand upon entering Phipps, experiencing history in the making. Pittsburgh Mayor William Peduto joined Phipps President and CEO Richard Piacentini to announce the completion of the Palm Court renovation, commemorating 125 years. Mayor Peduto declared the month of October 2018 “Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens 125th Anniversary Celebration Month” in a city proclamation, and construction crew members placed the final pane of glass on Palm Court during the dedication ceremony and unveiling. The Palm Court restoration is part of Phipps’ 125th anniversary commemoration, protecting and sustaining its treasured beauty for generations to come. Palm Court is part of the original nine-room glasshouse established in 1893 and is located at the heart of the conservatory. This architectural gem is the first room that guests experience at Phipps, inspiring them with breathtaking plants, floral displays, special exhibits and renowned collections. Dedicated architectural and construction teams replaced Palm Court’s wooden ribs with aluminum ribs, meticulously extruded to match the original profile from 1893. They also replaced over 5,000 panes of glass using advanced state-of-the-art glass technology. Additionally, after over 80 years, Phipps returned the historic ogee crest to the exterior of Palm Court, restoring this crowning architectural feature to the Pittsburgh glasshouse for the first time since 1937. The term “ogee” describes the distinctive architectural molding and arch curve formation that tops the glasshouse, returning its stunning skyline profile to its original design. Seven aluminum trusses form the ogee, filled in with aluminum ribbing and over 700 panes of glass. Stunning architectural features also include decorative new fleur-de-lis cresting and towering 8-foot tall finials. The ridge fleur-de-lis cresting is a classic, striking element found in Victorian glasshouse architecture, with each distinct shape standing between 2 and 5 feet tall, totaling 90 feet in length atop the ogee. The renovation process included the addition of new color-changing LED lights which illuminate Palm Court. Guests can join in the 125th commemoration by sponsoring a pane of glass in Palm Court, including those located in the iconic ogee. Panes of glass can be purchased on Phipps’ interactive website —phipps.conservatory. org/restore — by phone at 412/622-6915, ext. 6054, or in person at the conservatory, with glass panes beginning at a gift of $100. Supporters will receive a frameable printed certificate with pane coordinates for their selected section, making this a memorable gift or tribute. Donors will be acknowledged through a special recognition display in Palm Court. To learn more, visit phipps.conservatory.org. PHOTOS: PAUL G. WIEGMAN, ROB LARSON PHOTOGRAPHY

ART OF SPORT TEXT: CHRISTINE MCMAHON TUMPSOM PHOTOS: ART OF SPORT

In his final game as a shooting guard for the LA Lakers on April 13, 2016, at 37 years old, Kobe Bryant became the oldest player to score 60 in a single game and set the highest point total in the 2015-16 regular season. It is a statistic that makes jaws drop in a tremendously jawdropping athletic career. But as is the case with all highachieving athletes, there are reasons for those results. Kobe Bryant is on a number of quests as a postprofessional athlete, and it is safe to call all of those goals now. One of them is to become as big in business as he was in the National Basketball Association, and to do it while helping and teaching others.

With a business mentor in Bryant, Smith-Schuster has a personal interest in performance body care that refreshes, reenergizes, and rehydrates the skin using the best botanicals available. Along with an impressive athlete Art of Sport roster, Smith-Schuster will help Bryant to promote the mindful body care concept.

Enter the Art of Sport, a newly launched high performance body care line. The emphasis on performance-driven, scientific-based personal care products designed with

the athlete in mind attracted Bryant, who stepped in as a founding partner as recently as October 2018. His role is the brand leader, the story teller, and within weeks of joining the team, Bryant took the line to new heights with far-ranging athletic partnerships, including Pittsburgh Steelers Juju Smith-Schuster.

rt of Sport, a new body care brand formulated from the ground up to recharge, refresh and protect athletes’ skin, has launched. Founded by entrepreneur Matthias Metternich, the brand was born to address the skin care needs of the modern athlete. Developed by leading skincare scientists and with insights from Art of Sport’s worldclass athlete partners, the company designed a lineup of essential body care products to help athletes reach peak performance. The debut product line includes Deodorant, Antiperspirant, Hair + Body Wash, Body Bar, Sunscreen and a soon-to-be released ultrastrength Recovery Cream.

“Everything from what athletes wear and consume to how they recover has continued to evolve,” said Matthias Metternich, founder and CEO. “We didn’t see anyone transferring that same level of innovation and consideration into what athletes apply on their skin. By working with the best scientists and best athletes, we’ve created body and skincare products that can keep up with the performance needs of athletes at all levels.” Five-time NBA Champion and Academy Award® Winner, Kobe Bryant, joined Metternich and Art of Sport Co-founder Brian Lee, as a founding athlete. He’ll advise on all aspects of the business with a focus on brand-building and storytelling. Shortly after Bryant joined, the team partnered with other world-class athletes across sports, including: • Javier Báez, 2016 World Series Champion and AllStar second baseman • Sage Erickson, Professional Surfer • James Harden, Reigning NBA MVP • Ken Roczen, World Champion Motocross and Supercross Racer

• Ryan Sheckler, Skating Legend and X-Games Gold Medalist • Juju Smith-Schuster, Electrifying NFL Wide Receiver “An athlete, at any level, is always focused on how to improve,” said Kobe Bryant. “With Art of Sport, the goal is simple – provide innovative body care products designed for sports performance. We brought together the best minds in skincare to develop products that allow athletes to stay focused on competition.” The brand’s lead scientists, Dr. Shekhar Mitra and Dr. Laurence Dryer, helped to design new formulas that are engineered with powerful botanicals and performance ingredients, and made without common chemicals found in body and skincare products that your skin doesn’t need such as parabens, oxybenzone, PABA, MIT/MCIT, talc and 1, 4 dioxane. Each product is carefully formulated to perform better for athletes’ skin while keeping it fresh, invigorated and strong.

Pittsburgh Steeler JuJu Smith-Schuster is beloved in the City of Pittsburgh for his sportsmanship, personality, and big smile. But all of that is being sidelined by one extremely adorable little French bulldog named Boujee. JuJu and Boujee are frequent sights in the city, and recently nearly caused craned necks and shouts of support as they strolled along Butler Street in Lawrenceville. The love and affection between the football player and his smaller sidekick is infectious, as Boujee has his own Instagram! (@boujee) When we asked Pittsburgh Steeler team photographer Karl Roser if he had any shots of JuJu and Boujee, he knew immediately what we wanted to see. And he captured it! Pure love, pure fun, pure joy. + CHECK OUT JUJU ON THE FIELD!

DR. RYAN WAKIM OF PITTSBURGH’S TRANSFORMATIONS TMS CENTER TALKS STIGMA, TELEMEDICINE, AND OTHER ISSUES YOU WON’T WANT TO MISS

M

aking time for your mental health is always a challenge, and as the holiday season ramps up, finding time to prioritize your own mental wellbeing becomes increasingly difficult. According to Dr. Ryan Wakim, a Board Certified Physician in Psychiatry, almost 45 million adults in the U.S. suffer from a mental disorder and nearly half of those never receive treatment – even though it’s covered by insurance.

74

W HI R L / DEC EMB E R 2 0 1 8

IN THIS INTERVIEW, DR. WAKIM WEIGHS IN ON TODAY’S BIGGEST MENTAL HEALTH TRENDS, INCLUDING:

•W hat Mental Health in Pittsburgh looks like today • Signs of Mental Health Issues •A look at the future of Mental Health • Treatment Available (Both at Home and Medical)

YOU ARE NOT ALONE – MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES ARE MORE COMMON THAN YOU MIGHT THINK

While improved public awareness has led to a decrease in the stigma surrounding Mental Health, Mental Health remains a difficult issue to talk about for many people. The key, according to Dr. Wakim, is to realize that you are not alone. Today, nearly 1 in 5 adults in the U.S. (and approximately the same percentage of teens) suffers from a mental illness leading to some amount of dysfunction in day to day life. Dr. Wakim believes that providing support for those suffering from Mental Health Issues begins at home, on the community level. His organization GR&W Health provides several services – Harmony general mental health & wellness services, ROOTS opioid treatment services, and Transformation TMS therapy – to the communities that helped raise him and his employees. “Our company’s vision is to provide excellent behavioral healthcare, in a warm environment, with an impeccable team, changing the lives of those in and around our communities. This includes our private practice just north of Pittsburgh in Wexford – and our other locations in Wheeling, Morgantown, and Bridgeport, WV – all of which were near and dear to our hearts growing up for one reason or another ,” Wakim says. Wakim goes on to note that his staff’s familiarity with the cultural and social norms of the Western PA region allows them to understand a patient’s situation more completely, helping them to provide more effective care and achieve better outcomes. HOW CAN YOU TELL WHEN IT’S TIME TO SEE A THERAPIST OR COUNSELOR?

The amount of support than any person needs in order to cope with life’s ups and downs varies from person to person. However, if you or a loved one are currently experiencing any of these situations, it may be beneficial to consider professional support to keep your Mental Health on track: •A significant or difficult change. Take some time to examine how you are reacting to change. If you are feeling overwhelmed, a therapist may be able to help. •N obody understands. If you find that your existing support network is unable to provide the kind of help you are searching for, a counselor should be able to fulfill that role. •Y ou’re human. According to Dr. Wakim, therapy is an excellent way to “bring harmony to the mind and body” for improved overall wellbeing. THE FUTURE OF MENTAL HEALTH ERASES STIGMA AND PROVIDES PATIENTS WITH PERSONALIZED CARE

Dr. Wakim is dedicated to finding new ways to help his patients – a fact that is made obvious when he begins talking about his involvement in evolving therapies,

such as IV ketamine treatments for depression relief and telemedicine for improved overall wellbeing. Ketamine has long been used in hospitals as an anesthetic, but recently, doctors have discovered that low doses of the drug delivered intravenously can provide relief to patients suffering from depression and other disorders like Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and generalized anxiety. Best of all, IV ketamine can be administered discreetly in convenient outpatient sessions. Another important advancement in private Mental Health care, telemedicine is a service that allows patients to receive behavioral and primary care in the comfort of their own homes. For patients who are not ready to share their Mental Health journeys with others, telemedicine is a huge leap forward. Dr. Wakim is excited about the possibilities telemedicine offers his patients. “No matter what a patient is dealing with – whether it’s anxiety or bereavement or smoking cessation – we can be there for them, anytime or anywhere, even when they can’t make it into the office.” EVOLVING THERAPIES LIKE TRANSCRANIAL MAGNETIC STIMULATION (TMS) OFFER NEW HOPE TO DEPRESSION PATIENTS

Another innovation adopted by Dr. Wakim in the Mental Health field is Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) Therapy. The FDA-approved depression therapy is non-drug and non-invasive, and it has been effective in providing depression relief to patients who have not had success with medication and therapy alone. TMS Therapy uses a magnet (similar in strength to the type of magnet used in a magnetic resonance imaging or MRI machine) to stimulate the brain’s natural neurotransmitter activity. “It’s a really exciting therapy,” says Dr. Wakim. “Compared to other depression treatments like medications, TMS Therapy is nearly 10 times more effective with very minimal side effects.” Studies report that 1 in 2 patients who receive TMS respond to the therapy, and 1 in 3 are able to achieve complete remission from depression symptoms. This, according to Dr. Wakim and his colleagues, makes it a game-changer in terms of addressing otherwise treatmentresistant depression. IN SUMMARY

Every day, innovations in Mental Health bring new hope to patients everywhere. For the latest Mental Health news or to schedule an appointment at one of Dr. Wakim’s practices in the Western PA region, visit the GR&W Health website today. 10 QUESTIONS with

Maggie Hardy Magerko Owner & President of 84 Lumber & Nemacolin Woodlands Resort

76

W HI R L / DEC EMB E R 2 0 1 8

PHOTOS: FROM 84 LUMBER

1. AS THE HEAD OF A HUGE ORGANIZATION,

WITH MANY COMPONENTS, WHAT IS YOUR BEST ADVICE TO A YOUNG WOMAN ENTREPRENEUR?

My advice is simply to work hard, respect the people around you, and always find passion in what you do. If you do those things, I truly believe that you will be successful in any industry and in any role, whether it’s as an entrepreneur or something else.

2. WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE YOU WERE GIVEN WHEN YOU WERE STARTING OUT?

I learned early on in my leadership at 84 Lumber that getting respect is the same as giving it. I was only 26 when I took over the business from my father, Joseph Hardy. And given the male-dominated nature of the industry, I had to quickly learn how to earn the respect of my associates and peers, as well as how to maintain it. My father left huge shoes to fill. Early on, I didn’t stray far from his legacy and the practices he had put into place. I became more comfortable making my own strategic decisions as time went on, even if they didn’t always align with my father’s wishes. But we ultimately respect each other. To me, respect is the most important attribute in any professional — and personal — relationship.

3. WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE YOU GIVE YOURSELF NOW TO KEEP GOING?

I firmly believe that if you treat others with dignity and respect, you will be rewarded in your career and in life. I follow that direction day in and day out.

4. HOW DO YOU STRUCTURE YOUR DAYS? I structure my schedule around the needs of my two companies (84 Lumber and Nemacolin Woodlands Resort). While both businesses are different, I apply the same philosophy on how to take care of my associates and customers. I balance my time between both organizations, but 84 probably gets the lion’s share because it’s the larger of the two.

5. IS VACATION TIME IMPORTANT? They’re not always for me, but I think vacations are very valuable overall. When I am away, I always make sure I’m dialed in to what’s going on at my businesses.

6. AS A WOMAN, WHAT CONCERNS YOU? My family and associates are the most important things in my life. I’m driven every day to do all I can to ensure their happiness and well-being. At my organizations, I strive to give employees tools and resources that will enable them to flourish in their careers, and to create a work environment where they feel appreciated and respected.

7. HOW DO OTHER WOMEN SUPPORT YOU? I’m fortunate to have support from many people, both women and men. As a female business owner, I also have the backing of our Women Business Enterprise (WBE) team. 84 Lumber is a nationally certified woman-owned and -operated business through the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC). The WBE team is dedicated to representing 84 through the WBENC, as well as advocating for and empowering female business owners across the country, including myself.

8. WHAT SUGGESTIONS DO YOU HAVE FOR

WOMEN TO NETWORK MORE EFFECTIVELY WITH ONE ANOTHER?

I feel that having open, honest and consistent communication is the key to effective networking.

9. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE WAY TO HAVE FUN? I really enjoy watching my associates and family members grow and prosper in their careers and personal lives.

10. HOW DO YOU DEFINE A POWERFUL WOMAN OF THE WORLD?

I’m hesitant to use the word “powerful.” I believe that respect is what really defines a person, regardless of gender. It doesn’t take much to truly listen to someone and try to understand her or his point of view. When you do that, you open the door for incredible possibilities.

POWERFUL WOMEN OF THE WORLD NETWORKING EVENT WILL BE HELD NOVEMBER 28 FROM 10AM-12PM AT THE RIVERS CASINO. ADMISSION IS FREE. REGISTER ONLINE AT WHIRLMAGAZINE.COM/POWERFULWOMEN OR EMAIL CHRISTINE@WHIRLMAGAZINE.COM

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT Meet three local artists whose roots influence the subject matter, materials, and process for their greatest works.

SARAH COHEN

TONY CAVALLINE

Sarah Cohen uses many materials but mainly works in glass to transform natural materials. Transplanted to Pittsburgh after working for many other artists, Sarah started her own studio practice full-time. Working with glass mosaics inspired by nature, Sarah also continues to focus on nature through her jewelry business, PetalVision Glass. Looking at materials with a critical eye, consumerism is the catalyst that drives most of her work.

A mixed media artist based in Pittsburgh, Pa., Tony’s work explores the subjective nature of memory, and the created reality of personal perception. Tony uses organic elements incorporated with old and found materials such as maps, handwritten notes, and other ephemera to reflect the idea of a world seemingly formed of tactile scraps of consciousness. He uses varying levels of delineation and an ambiguity of focus to create what he sees as images still in the process of being remembered, made of chimerical artifacts of perception. His work becomes an exploration of the stories we share, the memories we keep, and the sad beauty of what is lost and forgotten.

PETALVISIONGLASS.COM + Sarah is the December featured artist of The National Aviary Maker Challenge, an initiative to give local makers the opportunity to work with the National Aviary in a collaboration to advance artistic entrepreneurship. The Maker Challenge features one local craft business, maker enterprise, or entrepreneurial artist each month. Find her art for sale in the gift shop. Alix Glosser Paul, Deb Englebaugh, “The Butterfly Project” : a community project in conjunction with the Holocaust Center of Pittsburgh 4 ‘ high x 20 ‘ width with a total of 5 individual panels each 4’x 4’ materials: handmade clay tiles, paint, glaze, smalti, ceramic tile, PA sandstone, Cape May white stone, tempered glass, Youghiogheny glass, sea glass, bisque ceramic butterflies handpainted by community members

“The Butterfly Project” is now a permanent installation for the Holocaust Center of Pittsburgh. The butterflies in panels 1-4 were painted by 360 community members including students in schools, and the 28 Holocaust survivors in Pittsburgh. Each background butterfly represents a child who perished in the Holocaust. Alix and Deb hand formed and painted all of the flying butterflies, attaching them to the wire fencing. Casting shadows over the individual butterflies, the fencing represents the ghettos and the camps. The fence flows over the butterflies holding them in and is then redirected upward toward the sky. The fence becomes a pathway for the artists’ butterflies in flight which were created to show the spirit of the children flying upward, toward hope. In panel 5, using mixed media mosaic, they interpreted the poem “The Last Butterfly”, written by 17 year old Pavel Friedman while imprisoned in Theresienstadt concentration camp.

CALIFORNIA WE VISIT THE LITTLE RIVER INN & THE INN AT NEWPORT RANCH IN MENDOCINO COUNTY TEXT & PHOTOS: CHRISTINE MCMAHON TUMPSON

Little River Inn Beautiful. It is the word everyone uses to describe this tremendously unique spot in North Coastal California. Set among the redwoods to the East and the Pacific Ocean to the West, be prepared to be awe-inspired with every mile, and be ready to know what it means to truly be able to count your blessings. Driving from Calistoga in Napa County gave the exhilarating benefit of navigating northern California’s terrain while traveling on two-lane roads. CA-128 winds through the region, through little villages, dark lanes, bright barren hills, redwoods that obscure the 100

sunny day, and finally, after a long mountain climb, to the top of the ridge above Van Damme State Park cove. It is impossible to do this drive and not ignite a thirst for historical knowledge as to the brave people who at one time traversed this great land without the benefits of modern technology. What kind of person has the resilience to carve out a special place in this hugely gorgeous, and at one time, extremely remote part of the world billed as paradise to attract those seeking a life lived beyond bounds. Ole Hervilla, his wife, children, and grandchildren are those people. Astounding it is to stand in the foyer of the historic home built in the 1800s and gaze at the beautifully crafted curved staircase. One can instantly picture the children playing along it before the home was turned into the Little River Inn. Thankfully Ole developed interests in tennis, golf, and creating a perfect spot for a specialized spa, and restaurant. As for where the locals of Little River spend their evenings? It is at the Little River Inn’s bar and restaurant, appropriately named Ole’s Whale Watch Bar. After watching Arnold Palmer play, Ole chose to build what was then, and still is, the one and only coastal golf course in northern California, Ole contacted several course developers, each more costly than the next. In frustration with the layouts, Ole designed the spectacular 9-hole course himself. The decision was wise, as the cuts and grooves in the course’s fairways and greens make for breath-taking views at every turn! A perfect spot for weddings, reunions, and group/corporate meetings, the Mallory House was the spot for a romantic elopement during this visit. A couple who lived several hours away had taken the romantic drive to say their vows at Little River Inn’s historic home set yards away from the cliffs. Whales, seals, pelicans, and butterflies literally adorn the videos and pictures taken of the two lovebirds and seem surreal in their portrayal of what was actually happening. From their perch in the top floor of the 3-unit home, they watched the sun set, she in her embroidered wedding gown, he in his suit but without the jacket, holding champagne flutes, and toasting a new life. It was beautiful to witness. Just beautiful. Little River Inn, 7751 CA-1, Little River, CA. 707.937.5942. littleriverinn.com visit whirlmagazine.com for an exclusive video!

The Inn at Newport Ranch How does one write a love letter to a ranch? The Inn at Newport Ranch inspires such thoughts from the very first turn through the large gates onto the rugged terrain where the Inn sits on the cliffs of the Pacific coastline near Fort Bragg. The land here is vast, with more life teeming through it than one can possibly imagine. From the fish and seals evading the predatory birds, to the blacktailed deer running past the newborn calf nursing with its mother in the redwood forest, the beauty of paradise melds with the possibilities of nature. Owner and ranch founder Will Jackson had a creative vision from the very first time he laid eyes on the 2,000-acre cattle ranch. A brilliant financier who had mastered global success, Will was able to recognize the potential of this land, which he says, “cost less than one acre back East.” Ramshackle quickly became classically restored within the Inn and the additional buildings. With loving care and witty intellect, Will filled the spaces with handchosen artifacts that beg for explanation of their origins, fine bedding that provides for serious slumber, and staff services at the very top of the scale. Besides being filled with books and music, and smelling redolent of logburning fireplaces, (more on those later), the Inn’s atmosphere brings a desire to return with the entire extended family, to fill it up with laughter, great conversation, and amazing food. The property’s postage102

stamp footprint is intentional, to encourage a oneness with nature that is so grand, so opulent, and so magnificent, the lyrics from “This Land is Your Land,” tumble in the background of one’s thoughts. The quality of the ranch makes it intellectually stimulating and remarkably memorable. It is a working cattle ranch, and was birthing time during the visit, so little babies ran alongside their mothers on the mountainous slopes. To see their tracks later on an ATV ride that ranks among lifetime bests, was astounding because of the heights that they climbed. To find these large, casual-postured cows in the redwood valleys near the end of the ATV ride was even more surprising. Perhaps they were being led by the fairies that the locals say live among the huge, ancient trees in the forest, or maybe they were admiring the benches and rock arrangements made by Will himself. During the visit, Will’s eldest daughter, Annie, explained the ranch’s history, and the family’s passion for it. One of the most dramatic settings is that of Annie’s bench, a favorite of Will’s, and certainly of Annie herself! The priority of the staff is to make everyone cared for, and feel at home. The food is incredible so there is no reason to leave the ranch. With gorgeous stone fireplaces crafted by Will in arrangements that encourage sitting in the fireplace itself or on the rocks that comprise the side of it, conversations with the owners, staff, and other guests are easy and fun. Catching a glimpse at Will having one such talk with a guest while sitting in the dining room’s fireplace sipping a glass of wine, it was immediately apparent that this was his vision for the Inn at Newport Ranch all those years ago when he first traversed the nation to resettle here; to celebrate and honor the historic pioneer spirit and live on the edge with elegance. ABSOLUTELY FAVORITE SPOT ? The 6-person hot tub on the roof of the Inn. The water is so pure it permeates the membranes of the body’s cells, or so it seems! In the evening, with the majestic redwoods standing watch over the sea, and the waves crashing onto the cliffs below, the galaxies present themselves unabashedly. With no need to be covered in bright city lights, the stars give off every bit of their heavenly light, revealing constellations in ways that are typically only witnessed from a wilderness vantage point.

“Dan is an F-35 pilot, so I had custom F-35 cuff links made, says Casey. “His Steeler themed sleeves were custom-made as well. It is a fighter pilot tradition called ‘party sleeves’ that they sport under their ‘Blues’ to reveal when they take their jacket off and no longer need to follow uniform protocol.”

Pittsburgh Tragedy TEXT: CHRISTINE MCMAHON TUMPSON

The neighborhood of Squirrel Hill is a magical one where people of all faiths live in beautiful harmony. It is renowned world wide as a special haven for those living their lives devoted to the Jewish lifestyle. Friends, families, and strangers routinely stand side-by-side on the streets of Squirrel Hill, recognizing and acknowledging one another with immense respect. The tragedy at Tree of Life took the neighborhood into our consciousness at levels we have never seen here in the City of Pittsburgh. The pain and grief sliced through our hearts and brought us to our knees. People everywhere found connections to those brutally murdered and in their despair found ways to express their feelings. In front of the huge memorial at the synagogue, flowers, signs, and letters demonstrate the emotions of devastation. Pittsburgh native Benjy Grinberg and his wife, Ellen, came back to Squirrel Hill from California to be supportive to friends and family here. As Benjy stood in front of the Tree of Life memorial, a person near him said, “Can you believe all of this hate?” To which Benjy replied, “Can you believe all of this love?” We are Stronger Together and we are Pittsburgh Strong!
