Flashback to the late 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s, and the Golden Era of Boxing. Muhammad Ali, George Foreman, Larry Holmes, and Mike Tyson were names that you often heard spoken with excitement. The fights were incredible, but the parties afterwards were not to be outdone. SHAPE Training, the premier fitness boutique in Western Pa., is bringing back these nights of competition and party time to Pittsburgh for one night! FIGHT NIGHT, will showcase 14 boxers chosen from SHAPE Training’s everyday athletes. These SHAPE Training members will sharpen their skills during a 90-day fight camp leading up to the night and face off in front of a crowd of 400. Yardon Brantley will lead team YB, and team JB will be lead by James Bryant- both of whom are part of the industry-leading leadership team at SHAPE. The best thing about this night is that money raised to see these boxers square off goes to support Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and Tweedside Community Foundation. Kristen Lucks will host the night. The Tweedside Community Foundation Tweedside is small, underprivileged village in the mountains of Jamaica. “TCF” has provided its community with basic needs such as food and clothing, and has repaired homes, schools, and much more. SHAPE Training has been the Tweedside Community Foundation’s primary contributor since opening in 2014.
+ It is a ‘black tie event,’ so guests will be wearing their red carpet best. A professional chef will be taking care of the menu for the guests and cocktails will be provided by Pennsylvania Libations. There will also be a live band and DJ. + L ululemon will be joining forces with SHAPE to provide a fashion show preview of the upcoming SHAPELululemon line throughout the night. + Celebrity judges, anchored by some former Steelers and Joe Musgrove (left), pitcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates will decide the action in the ring. Local vendors will provide one-of-a-kind raffle prizes to win during the event. For more info email mareija.bibbs@shapetrain.com or call412-467-9959 The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Kristen Lucks (left), an honoree of the 2018 class of Pittsburgh’s 50 Finest and a dedicated member of SHAPE Training, has collaborated with SHAPE to organize Fight Night. Funds raised from this event will contribute towards her fundraising campaign for The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation - the world’s leader in the search for a cure for cystic fibrosis. wh i r lm a g a z i n e . c o m / W h irl

I started drawing at an early age and Mom always made sure I had a sketch pad and a pack of crayons handy. Years later I studied at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh and received what was then called a degree in commercial art. I then went into the world of advertising as a graphic designer and worked for several agencies and studios. Eventually I started my own business designing logos, brochures, various printed pieces for mid to large size corporations. The computer sort of changed things for artists in those days, but I hoped that one day I could get into ‘real’ art. After I retired, I finally had the opportunity to jump into an oil painting class and was amazed at how much I enjoyed it. I started with still-life and seascapes until my son Ken said, “Mom I need a painting for my ‘man cave.’” And Voilà, Mohammed Ali’s iconic photo of him knocking out Sonny Liston was created in oils. Not bad for an amature! Then along came Mike Tyson, and many more hopefully.

Hiromi Katayama
Hiromi Katayama, a native of Ibarki, Japan, is a professional artist currently working from her private studio in Houston, Pennsylvania. Hiromi’s love for creative art was founded in the studio of her mentor, Renjoin Sensei, from the age of nine years old. Before she came to the United States, Hiromi received her BFA in Japanese Traditional Painting from Joshibi University of Art and Design, Tokyo, Japan, in the spring of 2008. In the summer of 2008, Hiromi traveled to Pennsylvania, where she studied for her MFA in the painting program at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, graduating in May of 2012. At the close of her personal academic journey, Hiromi continued building her portfolio, gained international representation, and has taught in academic and community-based art settings around the country. During the past several years, Hiromi has served her communities through artist residencies; Hiromi grew the 2-D arts program at the Armory Art Center in West Palm Beach, FL, and has brought a more global perspective to Junior-Senior High Schools through the RAC grant program in Washington County, PA. In the fall semester of 2017, Hiromi joined the art department at Wheeling Jesuit University as adjunct faculty, teaching drawing and painting classes to students from all academic disciplines. Hiromi continues to create work using traditional Japanese pigments and techniques; through traditional methods and materials, and her belief in cultural foundations in nature, she hopes to share her culture and a little bit of herself with her audience.

150th Anniversary Gala C
hampioning the well-being of generations of women, YWCA Greater Pittsburgh hosted its 150th Anniversary Gala on April 13 at the Wyndham Grand in Downtown Pittsburgh, featuring keynote speaker former Second Lady Dr. Jill Biden. “For 150 years, YWCA Greater Pittsburgh has marked its history by providing women and children with safe housing, job programs, education initiatives, and affordable health care, as well promoting equality and justice for everyone,” says Chief Executive Officer of the YWCA Magdeline E. Jensen. “Dr. Biden’s tireless efforts on behalf of those who need a voice closely reflect what the YW tries to do every day in our region.” Huntington Bank was the presenting sponsor of the 150th Anniversary Gala, with Susie Shipley, Huntington Bank’s President of Pennsylvania & Ohio Valley Region, serving as Honorary Chair. “The YWCA has been an advocate for civil rights and social justice, and they have elevated women physically, morally and spiritually,” says Shipley. The YW’s mission is to eliminate racism, empower women, and promote peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all. 36

“While the YWCA’s mission has always been important, it has never been easy,” Shipley notes. “From the first volunteer in 1867, to today’s board and staff, we honor the thousands of women who have played a part in this exceptional organization.” But the playing field isn’t level yet. So the YWCA Greater Pittsburgh is committed to continuing their effective advocacy for women and their families. According to YWCA Board President, LaJuana Fuller, “Our organization has done the hard work of making lives better, safer and more fulfilling for women and children and enhancing justice and freedom in our region for 150 years. That’s a remarkable span of time and a legacy for which we are very proud.” Fuller served as co-chair of the Gala along with YWCA Board member Betsy Teti. YWCA programs include the Women’s Resource Center, Child Care Information Services, Keystone STARS, HomewoodBrushton Child Development and Education, Youth Services & STEM Education, Health & Wellness, Housing and Center for Race and Gender Equality. The road before us may be a little shorter than the one we leave behind,” remarked Biden, “but we still have a little way to go. To make sure that our students get the quality education they deserve. To make sure that we aren’t held back by gender or race or how much money we have. To make sure that our mission is one of opportunity for all. It can be daunting, but I’ve been finding hope in organizations like the YWCA, in the women who we can look up to; who inspire us.”— Dr. Jill Biden

Elias started playing guitar when he was 13-years-old, playing mostly air guitar to his dad’s record collection. His dad’s collection is comprised of nearly every genre. But Elias was into guitar. It was the instrument that took front stage. That’s when Rock bands such as Led Zeppelin, Santana, Aerosmith, and The Eagles became his main focus. After acting out the part, he now wanted to be a Rock Star. One summer day, his dad heard him playing air guitar to Eddie Van Halen’s lead guitar and his dad made him a bet that he could never play it, the bet was $100. Elias practiced for 6 weeks straight day and night, playing the tune and imitating it, until he finally got it. He called his dad in the room and played it for him, earning his first $100. As time went by, he focused mainly on the music of the 70’s – the energy, the depth and the soul of that music gave Elias the drive to become more and more like his rock & roll idols. By 14-years-old, Elias was already getting the attention of folk and rock & roll local musicians, by attending and performing at the area’s open mic sessions. But it wasn’t very easy at first. Here comes this kid with an afro and a guitar, ha ha ha...yeah, he was the new kid in town and he did not look like everyone else and he could tell that they did not take him seriously. Until he got up on stage and he started playing and all you heard were screams and cheers and loud ongoing applause. They heard the sound of his guitar and they watched the energy and intensity of each note as he played and immediately this doubt was replaced with instant respect. By 15-yearsold, Elias started exploring other styles of music, exploring soul and r&b groups from the late 60s and early 70s, but still staying true to his original style, rock & roll, as he started playing steady gigs and shows at local venues. As more and more people began to accept this new kid, it gave him the confidence to go out there and become what he always dreamed he could be, and by doing this he realized something important, he is making a difference. This difference may be small to some, but the small ones are important, especially when younger kids come up to him and say, “how do you do that? I want to play just like you.” This is the change that he brings, this is the hope that he brings, this is the joy that he brings. At the High School that Elias attends, he tries 40

to be as much an inspiration to other aspiring musicians as he can. He helps others realize that they too can do it, just put in the time and the effort and the reward is there. Also keeping grounded is important to him. It’s not about making yourself seem pretentious – everyone wants to be a star – but it comes down to your attitude and how you are perceived and how down to earth you can remain through it all. On social media, Elias has had friends comment that he is the best guitarist they know, and his reply is thanks, I am the best guitarist on my block, lol. His philosophy is that, he not trying to be the best, he does it because he loves to play and if playing can bring him happiness, then that is all he needs. As far as changing
perceptions as an African American rock & roll artist, his views are that he cannot change the world, he can only be a part of it and be that change. Elias is the now 16-year-old, and now feels that he is playing on a different level and has landed gigs at places such as the “legendary” Mr. Smalls Theater. Elias playing larger venues caught the attention of many Pittsburgh promoters who got him gigs at places such as The Rex Theater and the Andy Warhol Museum. Elias biggest event so far this year was the Three Rivers Arts Festival, which gave him a wider audience of music loving Pittsburghers. We hope that this will be the start of bigger and better things to come for this Pittsburgh native. wh i r lm a g a z i n e . c o m / W h irl

hen Liz Berlin takes the stage, she grabs the mic and her powerful voice rings out, giving new meaning to the phrase “bona fide rock star!” In addition to being one of Pittsburgh’s favorite vocalists and producers, founding member of triple-platinum selling Pittsburgh band Rusted Root, and owner-operator of both Mr. Smalls Theater, which houses three separate music venues, and Mr. Small’s Recording and Mastering Studio in the Northside, she also runs a music program for foster youth with Allegheny County’s Department of Human Services called “We Rock Workshop” through her non-profit, Creative.Life.Support. You may remember we did a wonderful interview with jazz song stylist and music educator, Phat Man Dee, last April in 2017. She had just been voted “Best Local Jazz Act” in the Pittsburgh City
Paper’s readers’ poll and we dubbed this delightful jazz sensation a “ray of sparkles”! We are thrilled to give you the scoop on these two fabulous power divas’ newest collaboration “Social Justice Disco: Songs to Fight Fascists By!”
then the concept has blossomed into a phenomenal album, 13 songs of both original and disco classics, such as “I Will Survive”, “#BigBrotherIsTrending”, and “Black Lives Matter” sung to the tune of Stayin Alive.
Throughout their careers, both Liz and Man Dee have been relentless in their missions to shine the light of love, light, truth, and justice through music. While this new project “Social Justice Disco” may have started as an April Fool’s Day prank back in 2016, these serious musicians consider the fight for social justice and equity no laughing matter. On April 1st of 2016, Man Dee tagged Liz in a Facebook post about their “new record” “Social Justice Disco”. The post became somewhat viral and when Liz awoke and checked her feed, she had no idea what Man Dee was talking about. But upon realizing it was an April Fool’s joke, the seed was planted and it became apparent that this must be a reality. Since
With a mix of Liz Berlin’s pop musicians and Phat Man Dee’s jazz band members and the combined power of 60 committed Pittsburgh artists, this undertaking has become a movement with a sound that cannot be denied! Guest artists featured on this record include Pastor Deryck Tines and The Lemington Gospel Choir, poets Christina Springer and Leslie Ezra Smith, rappers Big Jus and HollyHood, Justin Sane of Anti-Flag, Reggie Watkins and the Steeltown Horns, Johnny Creed Coe and family, and Miguel Sague Jr. There will be disco dancers and drag queens and all together they shall make a righteous noise for freedom and justice for all!
Liz Berlin & Phat Man Dee Unite in the Spirit of Justice (and Disco)! Tickets are available now at www.mrsmalls.com. You won’t want to miss this magical CD release party!

Allie and Brooks met during their junior year of high school. A mutual friend of ours broke their leg and we ended up visiting him in the hospital at the same time,” says Allie. “Brooks asked for my screen name and the rest was history!”
allie withrow & brooks difiore
Allie’s stunning, Atelier Pronovias dress was from Bridal Beginning.
Allie Withrow knew something was happening when she walked into her home the day before Thanksgiving 2015 and all of the Christmas decorations were up. “Christmas has always been mine and Brooks’ favorite time of year, but we love waiting until after Thanksgiving to decorate, says Allie. Brooks, her high school sweetheart, had another idea in mind though. “When I came home, our house was covered from floor to ceiling in Christmas decorations and lights! Brooks was waiting for me in our living room with our dog, Crosby, and a ring,” exclaims Allie. Their summer 2017 nuptials, held at Mellon Park, included personal touches in everything from the cake to the boutonnieres. “My mother handmade all of the boutonnieres, and for the cake, we decided to incorporate our families’ traditional recipes,” Allie says. The two, threetier cakes included one featuring Brooks’ grandma’s recipe — a chocolate cake with chocolate espresso icing — while Allie’s confection consisted of a spice cake with cream cheese frosting that her mom made for any celebration growing up. “We wanted to include our friends and family in any way that we could,” continues Allie. We were lucky enough to have the best day with them, and we wouldn’t change a thing!” 80

The Business of boxing Local business owner CC Clark brings the sport to market square
Christopher “CC” Clark started boxing when he was 11-years-old. His sport took him to Cuba and to the Olympic trials in 2016. He’s also fought to become the successful business owner of Clarkfit Boxing and Fitness which he opened two years ago when he was just twenty-three. With an empty space on the second floor of a building in Market Square, CC stood outside everyday, rain or shine, meeting his potential new clients. Two years later, he’s not only filled his gym with boxing equipment, he’s filled it with so much fun and energy that you almost forget how challenging the workouts are!
