Spring
into Fitness
Now that the days are getting longer, the spring flowers are blooming, and the nicer weather is upon us, ‘tis the season to head outside for a little exercise. So toss that winter blanket aside and head to the great outdoors—now is the perfect time to use the extra energy you’ve stored all winter and get moving.
Hit the trails. Enjoy one of the many beautiful parks surrounding Pittsburgh, while soaking in the wonderful spring colors. Try walking or a light hike, road or mountain biking, or rollerblading to work up a sweat at various urban locations, such as Frick Park, Highland Park, or Schenley Park. Run for fun. Springtime marks the start of race season. But even if competitive running isn’t your thing, try walking or jogging on a local outdoor track for some fresh air and great exercise. Many charities host a walk, which is a great way to support a cause while getting in some steps. Reach new peaks. If you’ve been climbing indoors and are itching to take your skills outside, head to one of the many state parks. For example, just 40 miles north of Pittsburgh is McConnells Mill State Park, with great rock climbing, rappelling, kayaking, and hiking options. Venture Outdoors also organizes many group exercise excursions throughout the region. Downward dog al fresco. Dozens of local studios offer outdoor yoga classes beginning in the spring. Taking your mat out to the fresh air helps to awake the senses—and gives a whole new meaning to tree pose.

THAT’S THE
TICKET How Tickets for Kids® Charities introduces children to the arts
20
WHI R L / AP RIL 201 8
Nearly every event in a major venue has empty seats in the audience. Tickets for Kids® Charities, a national nonprofit organization based in Pittsburgh, has worked for the past 24 years to fill those seats with kids who could not otherwise be there. Meryl Hellring, Tickets for Kids’ director of development and communication, says that as a child, she was “transfixed and transformed” when she saw My Fair Lady onstage. “That experience changed my life, told me who I was, and informed my future,” she says. “Imagine if I had never had it.” That’s why she was drawn to Tickets for Kids. The staff of eight, led by Executive Director Jason Riley, has developed strong relationships with highly vetted social service agencies as well as sports teams, entertainment companies, and countless ticket providers. Through these relationships, Tickets for Kids makes free tickets available to low-income, at-risk kids across 40 states. “We want to provide these kids with experiences that inspire hopes, dreams, and achievements for a lifetime,” says Mike Pindell, board member and Huntington Bank senior vice president. “Whether it’s attending a ballgame, a play, or a trip to the Science Center, our goal is to arrange for access to events that our most vulnerable children may never have the opportunity to attend.” EDITED BY RACHEL JONES •
PHOTOGRAPH FROM HUNTINGTON BANK
Because they do not buy or distribute the tickets themselves, Hellring says Tickets for Kids can make each dollar of its operating budget stretch up to eight times as far, in terms of the ticket value provided to kids. “We could never accomplish what we do without our wonderful donors and agency partners, and together, we are creating a model for sharing cultural assets.” The recipient agencies decide how to distribute tickets, and outings are often used as incentives or rewards. “The kids write and tell us how they did well meeting their goals and were able to go to the event,” Hellring says. “They feel proud and special.” Other times, experiences are used to strengthen family bonds. “We heard from a single mom who had been taking night classes. Her son had made many sacrifices to help watch his younger sister,” she continues. “The mom was able to reward her son by taking him to a concert, and he was thrilled.” “We’re so often moved and humbled by the profound response to what we provide,” Hellring says. “We know the need is out there.” — Kim Ravenda Huntington Bank, huntington.com. FAITH FINOLI 4TH YEAR MEDICAL STUDENT; FAMILY MEDICINE RESIDENT PHYSICIAN STARTING MAY 2018; THE TALENT GROUP, MODEL Favorite things to do and places to go in Pittsburgh: I love the magic of the holiday season. I look forward to going to the ice skating rink at PPG Place every year. I also love the unique food and restaurants that Pittsburgh has to offer. Going to Hyde Park Prime Steakhouse followed by a Pittsburgh sports game always makes for a great evening. The views of the city at Monterey Bay Fish Grotto are also one of a kind. In the summertime, I enjoy boating on the three rivers. Waterskiing and tubing are always exciting. I am extremely thankful for the many medical opportunities that the city has to offer. It is one of the top cities in terms of medical advancements and research. It has given me a thorough education and has fully prepared me for my future as a physician. Favorite people to go with: I am very close with my family. I enjoy going everywhere with them. My dad taught my younger brother and I at a young age how to water ski. We have been skiing on the rivers since we were kids. Going to restaurants and sporting events with my friends is something I will be able to do for years to come, and I am thankful for a city that offers so many activities.

NOAH’S EVENT VENUE OF CRANBERRY & SOUTHPOINTE, EVENT COORDINATOR Favorite things to do and places to go in Pittsburgh: When I’m not planning events at NOAH’S Event Venue, you can catch me brunching in the city with my friends from grad school, or out and about with a local photographer working on personal content and collaborating with content creators in the city. Being from Myrtle Beach, S.C., I normally spend my free time reading, working out, and hanging out with friends on the beach, but since my move to Pittsburgh, you can usually find me kayaking on the river, shopping local in the Strip District, or on a boat on Cheat Lake in Morgantown, W.V. (where my in-laws live). I love being in a city where it’s just enough “city” to explore, yet suburban enough to make me feel like I’m not too far away from home. I’m a self-proclaimed foodie, so I’m always looking and trying out new restaurants, coffee shops, and local eateries. Favorite people to go with: When I was in grad school at Duquesne University, I was in a cohort of 13 other people who I studied with year-round. Most of my friends have settled here in Pittsburgh, so anytime there’s an event going on in the city, you’ll find me hanging out with my familiar crew from graduate school who have now become my family. I’ve also met a ton of friends through other photographers and artists in the area, so I’m always looking to establish relationships with like-minded young adults in the city.

Getting involved in the startup scene — I’m a part of the Ascender incubator — in Pittsburgh was one of the best things to happen to me. his is part two of a three-part series that chronicles three mothers in their journey up to and over the edge of opiate addiction. Part one looked at how they were introduced to opiates by their physicians, who created, and then largely ignored, the effects of addiction and withdrawal. This article details how they experienced the “dope sick,” described by those who have survived it as “hell on earth.” Part three will explore how they discovered the effective tools for building an opioid-free life for themselves, both to conquer opiates and to manage the underlying pain that started the opiate use in the first place. The physical effects of withdrawing from opiates provides a strong incentive to stay addicted. As an emergency room doctor, Dr. Bryan Doner treats multiple overdoses every day at work. He fully understands the dope sick — the torturous situation that opiate withdrawal creates. “We know for sure you can die from alcohol withdrawal,” he says in a recent interview. “You can have 70

seizures and die. The majority of the medical establishment says you can get really sick from opiate withdrawal but you’re not going to die.” Doner says it’s not so clear cut. “People get physically ill. Your heart rate goes up, your blood pressure goes up, you get anxious, sweaty, nauseous, vomiting, diarrhea. These are real physical symptoms — real physical problems that can require acute medical intervention in order to save your life.” All three of the mothers in this series have experienced the dope sick.
Dr. Doner is frustrated by the current system. “There’s no stop gap. Nobody has a good plan. What are we going to do about this? How are we going to stop this? You have to have a special license from the government to prescribe Suboxone, but I can prescribe oral Dilaudid no problem.” According to its website, Dilaudid has a risk of “serious, life-threatening, or fatal respiratory depression” in addition to being highly addictive. “It doesn’t make sense in my opinion,” says Doner. Sven Hosford will host a panel discussion based on this series at the 2018 World Medical Cannabis Conference & Expo in Pittsburgh at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center. “Strategies for Opioid Free Living” will cover the effective tools for building an opioid-free life, both to conquer opiates and to manage the underlying pain, which caused the need for opiates. March 14, 3-3:50 p.m. IN PART THREE OF THIS SERIES, THE THREE MOTHERS WILL DETAIL THE TOOLS THEY DISCOVERED TO LIVE OPIATE FREE. WH I R LM A G A Z I N E . C O M / WH IRL

LINDSAY FRIEDL & BRENT BISSELL For Lindsay Friedl and Brent Bissell, the best part of the wedding actually took place right before the wedding. “We weren’t sure if we were going to have a first look or not, even up until the week before the wedding we still weren’t sure,” Lindsay explains. “But it was the best 10-15 minutes of my life.” Sneaking away to the picturesque courtyard right outside of the Omni William Penn Hotel, the couple found comfort in some quiet time together. “It was just the two of us,” Lindsay reflects. “We just got all those jitters out and were able to have a private conversation.” After the memorable experience, Lindsay walked down the aisle of St. Boniface Church, just as her grandparents did on their wedding day, for a sweet ceremony performed by a childhood friend of the groom. Loved ones celebrated at the Omni William Penn Hotel reception, which started with the couple’s first dance to “Fly Me to the Moon” by Frank Sinatra. “That was probably our easiest decision out of everything,” Lindsay says of the song choice, as Brent is a pilot. For the rest of the planning, the couple tried to savor each step and make the most of every moment. “It happens so quickly,” Lindsay says. “Take your time and enjoy the process.”
“I wanted it to be romantic and classic,” Lindsay says of the day’s pink, white, and gold color scheme.
Lindsay incorporated her sparkling personality into her gorgeous lace gown by adding hand-sewn, Swarovski crystals.
“We definitely hit it off right away,” says Lindsay, who met Brent on a blind date. Exactly two years later, they were engaged!

The bride dazzled in a sleek strapless gown of ivory lace from Sorelle Bridal Salon.
“My bridesmaids all wore different blush or gold gowns, a decision that I was slightly hesitant about at the time,” Brittany says. “But my vision came together perfectly!” The romantic mix of blush-toned roses and green seeded eucalyptus that made up the king’s table garland complemented the floral selections in Brittany’s bouquet.
BRITTANY MATE VISH & CHRISTOPHER POOLE
“A major highlight of the reception was, of course, The Pittsburgh Cookie Table,” Brittany says. “My mom and aunt baked for weeks to produce over The dozen bridal homemade party dressed in simple, yet stunning, black and white ensembles. 140 cookies.”

After just under a year of dating, Chris Poole proposed to Brittany Matevish while enjoying a glass of champagne and a stunning sunset on the Isle of Capri. “Needless to say, the backdrop could not have been more romantic or perfect,” Brittany says. “I was over the moon!” When she and Chris began planning their dream wedding at Omni Bedford Springs Resort, they were told not to sweat the small stuff. “People told me again and again that very few guests would notice specific details,” Brittany explains. However, the bride chose to ignore this advice. “Attention to detail makes a world of difference! The details are what make your wedding yours.” From the vintage gold keys she used as escort cards, to the string of her mother’s pearls wrapped around the stems of her bouquet, Brittany kept every aspect in mind during the planning process. When the wedding day finally arrived, she and Chris carved out time to enjoy their hard work. “Chris and I made a pact that we would remind each other to stop at certain points throughout the day and just take it all in,” says Brittany. “I got chills during our first dance as we looked around the room and saw our closest friends and family surrounding us. We have never felt more loved!”

/ WEDDINGS “I wanted to use watercolors because I couldn’t decide on just two colors,” Julie says.
Julie and Jeffrey met at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort & Spa, where they both worked as chefs.
Instead of serving a traditional tiered cake, Bella Christie and Lil’ Z’s Sweet Boutique created a unique spread of 20 different mini desserts.
JULIE MOSESSO & JEFFREY HORN Playing up the summer vibes, the bridal party dressed in pastel shades of purple and green.
Surrounded by friends, family, and the beauty of nature, Julie Mosesso and Jeffrey Horn celebrated their love at the Pittsburgh Botanic Garden. Simple elegance radiated from every detail, from the watercolor touches on their invitations to the wildflowers that topped the tables at their reception. “I was trying for a boho look,” Julie says. “I thought it would look perfect at our outdoor summer wedding.” Julie’s bouquet — a soft bundle of peonies, Juliet garden roses, ranunculus, field flowers, sweat peas, and roses in shades of peach, ivory, and blush with greenery — fit her vision beautifully and complemented her Allure gown from Sorelle Bridal Salon. “I knew I didn’t want white,” Julie says of the lacy number. “I loved the pink tone, it was just perfect with the venue!” As much as the day centered on Julie and Jeffrey’s love for each other, it also encapsulated the immense love that surrounds them. “It was so nice to have our families together,” Julie says. “We both come from large families, and everyone is all over the country. To have everyone come to Pittsburgh for our wedding meant the most.”

A few days before the couple planned on visiting Leah’s family camp in Clearfield County for her birthday, Michael took a solo trip to the site to leave a message — “Leah, will you marry me?” — to greet her when they arrived at camp. “I was completely surprised!”
LEAH RETHAGE & MICHAEL DELGRECO Sunny Florida served as the romantic backdrop for Leah Rethage and Michael DelGreco’s picturesque wedding day. With two matrons of honor, two best men, and an adorable flower dog by their sides — and sand beneath their feet! — the bride and groom exchanged vows before nearly 50 loved ones. Leah reflected the beach theme with a breezy, lace Willow by Watters gown and a bouquet of blue orchids, white cala lilies, palm tree leaves, baby’s breath, white roses, and blue hydrangeas. Turquoise blue and silver accents decorated the outdoor reception space, tying in the nearby scenery. For couples interested in planning their own destination weddings, Leah recommends visiting the venue beforehand, if possible, and choosing vendors who provide multiple services. “Family Affair Key West Wedding Services supplied my DJ, videographer, photographer, and day-of planner,” Leah explains. “It made my planning a lot easier!” Leah and Michael loved sharing their day with family and friends who traveled many miles to be there. And the celebration made quite an impact on the guests, too! “That was my cousin’s first trip there,” Leah says. “She had so much fun and fell so in love with Key West that she moved there shortly after our wedding!”
Ocean, sand, starfish, and seashell details covered the couple’s cake, which they topped with two beach chairs and a dog bowl.
“My Girl” by The Temptations played during their first dance as husband and wife.
“We chose Cinco de May as our wedding day because it was our dog, Pistol’s, birthday!” Leah says.

/ WEDDINGS “I wasn’t that little girl who knew what she wanted for her wedding dress, but I became that girl,” Ashley says with a laugh. Koda Bridal added custom sleeves to her strapless gown, which featured a flowy, tiered skirt.
ASHLEY PONTIS & STEVEN SOLETO After almost a year of dating, Ashley Pontis and Steven Soleto threw a party with their closest friends and family members to celebrate their new home together. During which, Steven wanted to film a video for his “Chef Steve” web series, where he showcases quick cooking demonstrations. While Ashley recorded Steven’s demonstration, everyone else was recording Ashley’s reaction as he said, “and now for a special variation of this drink, you can propose to the love of your life,” and dropped to one knee. (Aw!) Loved ones gathered again for the couple’s special day at The National Aviary. “I wanted a garden party vibe,” Ashley says. The couple exchanged vows beneath a floral arch built by Ashley’s dad, Steven, and his best man Chris in The National Aviary’s Rose Garden before the outdoor reception, which brought a summery, floral feel with peach, lavender, blush, gold, and ivory details. Before the festivities kicked off, Ashley and Steven shared a first look at the North Shore riverwalk then took photos together at the different habitats inside The National Aviary. “I went under the reception tent alone,” Ashley says. “Looking at everything we created and realizing I’d be marrying my best friend within an hour. Just being still in that moment and knowing that everything was about to happen was my favorite moment.”
Ashley and Steven served a naked cake with vanilla bean batter, Champagne icing, and strawberry compote. “We also had cupcakes in different flavors to accommodate different allergies.”
“I was at an emotional high,” Steven says of their first look. “She tapped me on my shoulder, and she was so beautiful. I was absolutely floored.”
“We definitely hit it off right away,” says Lindsay, who met Brent on a blind date. Exactly two years later, they were engaged!
“We used Eco Flowers for my bouquet, bridesmaids’ bouquets, boutonnieres, and corsages,” Ashley says. “They’re wooden, so we have them forever.”
