Join us for a celebration on JULY 23 at Point State Park — the fifth annual One WHIRL Yoga Fest + Healthy Lifestyle Expo! Last year, 1,500 yogis joined 10,000 festival goers for an entire day to “heal thy” life in a sacred spot in the heart of the City of Pittsburgh. The festival bears homage to our community-shared focus to become difference-makers in Western Pa. Little did we realize that everyone’s efforts would ignite such passion. Come see why we encourage and support a healthy lifestyle commitment, and meet other like-minded people who share that value. If you are new to the idea, browse our vendor village. It will be filled with great products represented by local businesses. Classes will be offered all day and are for every level of fitness. Beginners, have no fear. Regular practitioners can try new things, too. And for those looking for a challenge, bring it! Tickets are available at whirlmagazine.com/yogafest. For more information, turn to page 41. HERE’S TO A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE!

THE MAIN EVENT The celebration of Pittsburgh’s 200th year as a city continues this month with Bicentennial Day! The JULY 9 festivities begin at 11 a.m. with a parade coasting from the corner of Liberty Avenue and 11th Street to Point State Park. “Descendants of almost every mayor Pittsburgh’s had in its 200-year history will be marching in the parade,” says Gloria Forouzan of the Office of Mayor William Peduto. “It’s an unusual family reunion!” Market Square keeps the party going from 12:30-2:30 p.m. with the Bicentennial Showcase, featuring cultural heritage groups performing songs and dances from their native lands. Afterwards, make your way to Point State Park at 6:30 p.m. for the culminating festival, featuring local bands and a grand finale fireworks display. Happy birthday, indeed! Spearheaded by its androgynous and awesome frontman Boy George, Culture Club’s smooth musicality and untouchable ingenuity inspired a generation and built a fandom that spanned across the pond — and across the world! Pelotonia will take place in Columbus, Ohio, August 5-7.
INVESTING IN A CANCER-FREE FUTURE hether you’re old or young, wealthy or not, cancer has touched you at some point in time. According to the American Cancer Society, there will be an estimated 1,685,210 new cancer cases diagnosed in the U.S. during 2016, making the battle against the disease even more urgent. But for those involved with the Pelotonia biking event, fighting cancer spans far beyond winning a race — it’s a lifetime commitment focused on empowering the world to find a cure.
W
Pelotonia is a three-day experience in Columbus, Ohio, that includes a weekend of cycling, entertainment, and volunteerism. Founded in 2008 with an objective of finding a cure for cancer, Pelotonia has raised more than $106 million for life-saving cancer research in its first seven rides, giving hope to thousands of people each year. Huntington Bank and its employees have been dedicated supporters of Pelotonia and its mission since the first 53 Team Huntington riders participated in 2009. Huntington became a major funding partner of Pelotonia in 2010. Over the years, the Huntington regional team in Pittsburgh has held several local events to raise awareness and funding for the Pelotonia effort. Kim Lyttle, senior vice president of government affairs at Huntington Bank, has been hosting an annual Pelotonia fundraiser since he joined the company in 2010, but his commitment to finding a cure only grew stronger after losing his wife, Mary Jo, to breast cancer in December 2015. “I was originally intrigued by the cause after learning that all research produced by the participating groups is disseminated to institutions all over the world, so people everywhere are really benefiting from this effort,” says Lyttle. “I know firsthand just how important this research is to our communities. There are things that happen in life that really change your perspective, and you can only hope that the future looks a little bit brighter tomorrow.”

Pelotonia is one of the largest cycling events in the country in terms of participation, with last year’s ride bringing in nearly 8,000 riders from 40 states and 10 countries. Additionally, Pelotonia has over 5,000 virtual riders (like Lyttle) and registered volunteers who help extend the reach of this grassroots initiative. Pelotonia directs 100 percent of every rider-raised dollar Stephen E. Perkins, M.D., UPMC to support cancer research Health Plan’s vice president of at the Ohio State University medical affairs Comprehensive Cancer Center — James Cancer Hospital and Solve Research Institute. Since becoming involved with Pelotonia, Huntington Bank has raised more than $15 million toward cancer research, getting closer to the finish line with each dollar donated. “Pelotonia is a very special event for Huntington. By reaching out into our communities, we have strengthened our resolve, redoubled our efforts, and committed ourselves to curing a disease that seemed unbeatable just a few short years ago,” says Susie Shipley, president of the Western Pennsylvania and Ohio Valley region at Huntington Bank. “Through our efforts to fight cancer — a terrible disease that has touched the lives of our colleagues, customers, friends, and partners — we have learned things about ourselves as individuals, as teams, and as a company. We are so close to our goal. And we will win.”

As the event expands its reach each year, Pelotonia’s community of partners continues to grow as well. Locally, sponsors such as UPMC have shown their support for Pittsburgh’s Huntington team by sponsoring a series of local fundraising events. “Huntington Bank’s Pittsburgh region Pelotonia team is a service to our community, especially for all of those who have been touched by cancer. They keep the hope alive by helping to fund much needed research so that more treatments and hopefully a cure can be found,” says Stephen E. Perkins, M.D., UPMC Health Plan’s vice president of medical affairs. “UPMC Health Plan is proud to support the Pelotonia team who benefits our members and our community.” This year’s event will take place from August 5-7 in Columbus, Ohio. The ride begins for all routes on Saturday and spans through Sunday for various routes. Local fundraising events include: Monday, June 27: The 2nd Annual Golf Scramble at Seven Oaks Friday, July 29: The 4th Annual Clays Shoot at Seven Springs Saturday, September 27: The 2nd Annual Corporate Cup at North Park To find out how you can get involved with this effort, visit pelotonia.org. Its sister company, Marbella Event Furniture and Décor Rental, is on the path to equal success with the announcement of its expansion into a new market for the Washington, D.C., Northern Virginia, and Maryland areas in the fall/winter of 2016. With the excitement of the fifth annual One WHIRL Yoga Fest + Healthy Lifestyle Expo buzzing through the WHIRL office, we took a moment to reflect on the significant milestone. Editorial Director Christine Tumpson touched on the importance of the number five itself, noting that fifth birthdays meant so much to her son and daughter growing up. “It’s a whole hand,” she explained, raising her own hand to connect the visual of her five fingers representing the age. The amount of development from infancy to five years is astounding, and we’d like to think the One WHIRL Yoga Fest + Healthy Lifestyle Expo endured similar growth over the years leading up to this one for the thumb. As we celebrate the festivities on July 23 at Point State Park, we’d like to give a hand to everyone who makes the event possible — the selfless ambassadors, supportive sponsors and vendors, and dedicated attendees who help to make our local yoga community whole. THANK YOU FOR FIVE FABULOUS YEARS. HERE’S TO THE NEXT 50!

e’re in a perfect place for this to be happening at this point at our lives. It hasn’t set in yet, but it will tomorrow!” Emily Walz grins, looks at her husband, Ryan, sitting next to her in the obstetrics office at West Penn Hospital, and breaks into laughter. Her melodious peals are contagious, enveloping everyone in the room in the joy of the moment. Today is Emily’s official due date to deliver the couple’s first baby. That happiness from being in the right place at the right time is one for the Walzes to relish with their team of physicians at Allegheny Health Network’s Jones Institute for Reproductive Medicine, a center specializing in assisting families with fertility issues, and Seasons OBGYN, one of the area’s leading general obstetrics and gynecology practices. “I heard really good things about the Jones Institute, and the labor and delivery here,” says Emily. “I knew I had asymptomatic endometriosis, so I thought I might have problems getting pregnant. I really liked AHN’s approach of trying naturally, staying fit, eating healthy, and getting regular follow-ups.” After a year of focusing on pregnancy, and not conceiving, Emily and the medical team reviewed her options, deciding to continue on the path of natural fertilization but with

medical intervention to remove the growths blocking the fallopian tubes leading to the uterus. Emily illuminates the importance of communication with the team of physicians. “It seemed like the best option was surgery to clear up space in the tubes, but they told us they would have to remove them if they were too damaged. They said there might be a way to maybe keep one of them intact. I said please keep it, as long as it’s open even a tiny bit. That’s all I needed, just that little bit of hope.” Dr. Emily Lebovitz of Seasons found that little bit of hope as she performed Emily’s surgery. “Going into the procedure, we knew we were likely to have problems. We took out the left fallopian tube because it was completely blocked. The right fallopian tube was significantly dilated from the endometriosis. But I remembered what they had told me,” she now recalls, looking at the couple. “And I wanted to give it one more try. So when we saw it wasn’t completely blocked, we decided to keep it intact.” “We knew IVF (in vitro fertilization) was not for us,” Emily says, “so this surgery was our one shot. And we were completely OK with it not working.” Ryan winks at her, and together the couple describes a beautiful life. She as a

After ensuring that the pregnancy was not an ectopic one, a natural complication with a blocked fallopian tube, Emily’s pregnancy was celebrated by her team. Says Lebovitz, “I feel like we were lucky. FINDING
a
WAY
BY ABBY DUDLEY PHOTOGRAPH BY MICHAEL FORNATARO
aljinder Kaur, an Indian woman in her 70s, became a firsttime mother this year when she gave birth to a baby boy who, by all accounts, is healthy. Closer to home, Janet Jackson made recent headlines for postponing her world tour after becoming pregnant just two weeks shy of her 50th birthday. She’ll join a long list of Hollywood’s elite who welcome babies into their lives well after the typical age of doing so. If these newsworthy women are indicative of anything, it’s an evergrowing frontier for reproductive health innovation.
D
Stories like these can give the erroneous impression that pregnancy at an advanced age is easily accomplished, says Lori Homa, M.D., Allegheny Health Network reproductive endocrinologist and infertility specialist. Often, advanced infertility treatments are behind such “miracle pregnancies.” “Women who are either in Hollywood or are getting in the press for these sorts of things are likely using donor eggs,” says Homa. “They’re not likely to be using their own eggs.” Homa, board certified in obstetrics and gynecology, sees firsthand the unrealistic expectations that the media so often creates surrounding eligible pregnancy age. “I have a lot of people come in who didn’t realize that fertility rates decrease exponentially when you reach your 40s. So we see women at age 44 or 45 who are expecting that everything is still fine, and they’re thinking for the first time, ‘I should see someone at this point.’ But, really, they should have thought about seeing someone earlier, maybe by their late 30s, or even at 40.” Dr. Homa says women and couples hoping for parenthood should seek advice and treatment sooner rather than later. Later-age pregnancies that make headlines in the media are pushing back the age many women start seeking medical counseling, with unrealistic expectations they can still become pregnant with their own DNA. But women are born with a certain amount of eggs. “They’re actually highest around 20 weeks of gestation, so you have your highest number of eggs before you’re even born!” Dr. Homa says. “And the number only continues to decrease as women age. We can never make more.” Luckily, amazing innovations in reproductive health are ensuring that there are many ways to start a family. Donor eggs implanted through in vitro fertilization (IVF), for example, are a major advancement in reproductive medicine for many couples hoping to conceive. “Donor eggs are a wonderful thing,” explains Homa. In fact, they are just one of the many options that she employs to help treat infertility. Homa and AHN customize a wide range of medical approaches for a wide range of people seeking to start families. “A patient’s treatment plan can range from oral ovulation induction medications to IVF. And there are many different types of patients who seek our services,” Homa explains. “We might have a single female looking to preserve her fertility for the future, or become pregnant now, or we might have a male-female couple who’s been trying for years and hasn’t been able to conceive. Or, we might
66-81.indd 68
have a same-sex couple that comes in and is desiring to conceive through either donor insemination or, if it’s a male-male couple, then they might want to use a gestational carrier for their embryo and a donor egg, so that gets even more complicated,” she continues. “But there are a lot of different scenarios that people come in with, and we’re able to help people no matter what their story is.” Two specific groups of people are helped by egg freezing technology, which has made some of the biggest strides in the field in recent years. Cancer patients and women who want to extend their fertility are benefiting from the new science that is making the process more successful than ever. Embryo freezing — freezing an already fertilized egg — has been more popular in years past because it is far easier to freeze and thaw a larger mass of cells. An egg, basically one giant cell full of fluid, presents more complications and risk of crystallization. “Egg freezing is a new technology. It has only been approved for general use for a few years,” says Homa. “As the process gets refined, I think the results will continue to improve.” For cancer patients and women hoping to preserve their chance for children, it’s extremely exciting progress. Whereas Homa recommends that the latter type of woman undergo the operation by age 38, which statistically shows the best results, the former are helped by freezing their eggs before starting cancer treatment. “We have a lot of women who have breast cancer who do it before they undergo chemotherapy. But there are also women with other cancers, too, that decide to go through with freezing their eggs before they move into a chemotherapy regimen that could decrease their fertility afterwards…[Chemotherapy] can affect how your ovaries function and your ability to conceive in the future.” In addition to fertility treatments of all kinds, Homa performs a lot of reproductive surgeries, as well. These include anything from fixing congenital anomalies — repairing a septum in the uterus or even creating a vagina — to treating diseases like polycystic ovary syndrome, which often starts in the teen years. “It’s a lot of different things — a spectrum of people who want to become pregnant, mostly, but also people who are experiencing other complicated reproductive issues.” No matter the issue Homa is presented with, she tackles it with success. “Our program is really expanding, and our pregnancy rates with IVF are now well above the national average, so we’re very successful,” says Homa. “Our program has helped many women and couples conceive using a variety of different methods, whether it be ovulation induction, insemination, or IVF. It’s really wonderful to see our patients have successful outcomes,” Homa continues. “It’s a privilege to have such a positive, meaningful impact on their lives.”

FOLLOW
the
ADVICE
BY CHRISTINE TUMPSON PHOTOGRAPHS BY MICHAEL FORNATARO
Allegheny Health Network obstetrician Dr. Christine Gallis relates firsthand to her patients’ infertility issues. “My husband and I took five years to get pregnant, and I ended up having IVF (in vitro fertilization) because of endometriosis. It worked really well on the first try.” She adds, “So well, in fact, we now have 18-year-old triplets ready to go off to college!” So when patients eager to become parents look to her for advice, she can step into their shoes, understanding the medical and emotional issues as well. “I tell them, ‘We’re going to keep working on it until we find something that works.’ I tell them that God has a different plan for everybody.” But she tempers her optimism with compassion. “I know what it feels like to think that everybody is getting pregnant except you.” Samantha Dengler and her Pittsburgh City firefighter husband, Eric, were already raising her sister’s two young children after her sister passed unexpectedly. But they wanted to experience parenthood naturally as well. As a patient of Dr. Gallis at West Penn OBGYN Associates, Samantha was aware that she had fibroid tumors, but had no idea of the severity of disease. “We only saw eight fibroids on the ultrasound.” Samantha says. “But during surgery, they found seven more, 15 in all. It was devastating. What should have been a two-hour procedure turned into four.” The discovery concerned Dr. Gallis as well. “She had a big problem. She had many, many fibroids, some blocking the lining in her uterus. She had so many, I wasn’t sure that it would end up OK.” 70
66-81.indd 70
After the operation, Dr. Gallis advised that a lifestyle change would be beneficial. The Denglers listened to every word. “I was 65 pounds heavier,” says Samantha. “I said to my husband, ‘I’m going to get in shape and lose weight. There are no excuses.’ He had bought me an elliptical trainer that was collecting dust. I got myself on a program. My husband got me on CrossFit. We changed the way we ate and cut out fast food. And Eric helped me every step of the way.” While the Denglers still weren’t getting pregnant naturally, they were undeterred in their new healthy lifestyle. “What I love is that Dr. Gallis told us that the surgery might not work. But I trusted her, so we just kept going.” When the Denglers went in for Samantha’s annual check-up after the surgery, she was five pounds away from her goal of a 70-pound drop. But her plans for a victory celebration went completely out the window when, after devouring a veggie burger at lunch, she took a pregnancy test. Today, Samantha and Eric laugh at the memory as they bounce their beautiful baby girl, Riley, between them. “Sure enough, I was pregnant.” For Dr. Gallis, it is a storybook ending, complete with the healthy lifestyle transformation and newest family member for the Denglers. “It’s funny,” she says, “because you have those conversations every day with patients. It’s nice when you have those outcomes. Patients need to follow their doctors’ advice.” Allegheny Health Network, ahn.org.

or many Pittsburghers, crossing the rivers is a conundrum. If you haven’t already, it’s time to squash those notions and start exploring — and not just because you have an appointment! Staff Photographer Michael Fornataro and I set out sans plans on a surprisingly cool day to the Borough of Oakmont, crossing the Hulton Bridge via Route 28. Our first stop? Oakmont Bakery, of course. We fueled up with breakfast sandwiches — mine an egg white,
spinach, tomato, and feta on a fresh eight-grain bagel — and iced lattes. The lauded establishment was buzzing, as final preparations for the U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club were underway during our visit. All the more reason to celebrate with the most delicious desserts! After some peoplewatching, we hit the streets, admiring the colorful florals in front of staple restaurant, Hoffstot’s, and the hanging baskets beneath the pavilion at the center of town.

La Perla
At 127 years old, the Oakmont community is wise, and full of charm and antiquity. Founded in 1816 by farmer Michael Bright, the area along the Allegheny River was incorporated in 1889 and took its name from a landmark Oak tree. We popped into La Perla to chat new merch with owner Amy Epstein. She proudly showed us a jewelry line from Thailand and resort wear from Sympli, a favorite of regulars. Our next stop was Carabella. The boutique will celebrate its 20th anniversary in September, but owner Carol Kinkela’s focus was on “The Longest Table,” an outdoor dinner party to benefit the Joseph A. Massaro Jr. Alzheimer’s Research Fund, hosted by Kinkela and Carol Massaro, a dear friend and customer. Kinkela became emotional when talking about party prep and the support of 300 guests (and counting). Her passion lies in her store’s connection to causes close to her heart, a thoughtfulness we found radiating through Oakmont. Riverside Park was our final destination of the morning. The tennis courts were all occupied, as well as the running track and children’s playground, by friends making the most of their time in the neighborhood. Here are just a few more reasons to visit this month!

La Pomponnée Beauty Artisans owner Kristen Peckich
AMP UP THE GLAM The renovations at La Pomponnée Beauty Artisans and Mec Modern Barbering’s Mt. Lebanon location are finally complete! “The space is much more contemporary, young, and edgy. And definitely more glamorous, going back to the original meaning of La Pomponnée, which means ‘dolled up’ in French,” says owner Kristen Peckich. Upon entry, a chic reception space decked out in cool gray hues and stylish lighting fixtures greets guests. And, the sleek, elegant, though welcoming, feel follows throughout the space. The pedicure area boasts chairs fit for a queen, where we can simply let the relaxation sink in, and touches of cowhide paired with a fireplace warm the cozy waiting area. Roya Ansari also created custom artwork — multimedia pieces modeled after La Pomponnée’s own imagery — that hangs throughout the salon and spa. The guys can find their own retreat on the left side of the building, where a classic barber’s pole shines outside. Mec Modern Barbering received a revamp, too, and we love the masculine vibe denoted by leather chairs, a warm brick accent wall, decorative antlers, and of course, the stocked beer fridge. The update will certainly enhance the experience while getting a hair style or treatment, but also reflects a shift in clients’ needs over the years. Says Peckich, “In the ‘90s, moms often came in and wanted to spend the whole day here and have multiple treatments at once. We’ve witnessed a change where now people are more likely to space them out.” Even though beauty and hair trends come and go, and the salon and spa has been through its share of changes over the years, including the addition of “Beauty Artisans” to its name, which Peckich notes is because “everything [we] do is our craft,” the incredible staff has remained a constant. “We have nearly 65 employees, many who have been here since we first started over 20 years ago, and many who have been here more than 10 years, or five years. We really try to show them our appreciation,” she says. With La Pomponnée celebrating 25 years in business this upcoming February 2017, the makeover is impeccably timed. Cheers to the new stylish surroundings! La Pomponnée Beauty Artisans and Mec Modern Barbering, 659 Washington Road, Mt. We’re constantly on the hunt for easy, breezy bohemian-inspired pieces to wear this time of year and JOHNNY WAS, available at Cajoli, has quickly become our go-to line for timeless blouses, dresses, coverups, and more. Founded by Eli Levite in 1987, the brand’s name comes from the Bob Marley track of the same name, further solidifying its roots in a worldly, artistic lifestyle. Since then, JOHNNY WAS has grown to include five lines: JOHNNY WAS Collection, JWLA, 3J Workshop, BIYA, Pete & Greta, and 4 Love & Liberty, all carried at Cajoli. Each label offers a slightly varying vibe with the same quality craftsmanship and free-spirited flavor, paired with hallmarks like stunning embroidery, unique patterns, and vibrant colors. A BOL D MOVE Kym Pelcher expands Splurge’s fashionable reach into fabulous, new digs
Much like Tiffany’s iconic blue box, in Pittsburgh, giving one of Splurge’s chic white and orange packages holds special meaning. In just three years, owner Kym Pelcher has built up the reputation of her Fox Chapel boutique as one of the city’s go-to places to shop for home décor and unique gifts. And now that it’s outgrown its original storefront, Splurge has relocated into a space more than double the size of its predecessor, one that finally fulfills Pelcher’s original vision for the shop. With soaring ceilings, several unique vignettes that add warmth, and builtin cabinetry (crafted by her husband, Chris!) to maximize floor space, it’s a brand new Splurge that still maintains the same intimate feel and the full sensory, enjoyable shopping experience. Retail therapy at Splurge has always taken the form of something not available online — touching a fur throw, viewing the beautifully arranged displays, smelling all of the candles, and listening to Pelcher’s sage design advice. “I always wanted to pull the elements of my career, merchandising, and interior design together to open a new concept retail store,” she says. “When we moved to Pittsburgh from New York, I knew that this was the perfect location for what I had in mind. Nothing like it existed here.” As a home furnishings buyer in New York for 13 years prior to starting her interior design business, Pelcher’s knowledge of the industry enables her to curate the very best items for her clientele. The new location allows her to bring even more to her new and loyal customer base, with expanding categories including bridal, baby, accent furniture, lighting, and a custom bedding program. “The space now has a full-size upholstered bed with an exquisite bedding ensemble atop it,” she explains. “We also have some really fabulous, unique pet beds that are really fun. Our pets need nice digs, too!” Plus, clients will find a custom-made fireplace mantle that can be designed to fit any space, and inspirational table settings, both for more formal and outdoor dining, just in time for a summer soirée. “Overall, it’s the same Splurge — just more of it!” Splurge, Fox Chapel Plaza, 1109 Freeport Road, Fox Chapel. 412.252.2242. splurge-shop.com.

A FEW OF HER FAVORITE THINGS: F
Q & A
HOW DOES YOUR PERSONAL STYLE TRANSLATE IN THE STORE?
KP: Traveling around the country to the different design shows is probably the biggest inspiration. To see the talent from all over the world pulled together under one roof is really incredible. I also keep up on all current trends through magazines and social media, but rarely jump on passing trends unless they really speak to me. I prefer more timeless looks and I love to find investment pieces. In general, wherever I am I always have my eye out for great design.
{
Alita artisan lamp, $245.
Reclaimed wood and galvanized steel butcher block, $750.
“One of my favorite items in the store right now is a butcher block kitchen island in repurposed wood from 19th-century buildings found in Central Europe,” says Pelcher. “This piece can update any kitchen immediately and serves as a dramatic conversation piece.”
{
WHAT ARE YOUR HOME ESSENTIALS?
Lampe Berger catalytic diffuser “pebble” lamp, $60.
This beautiful lamp infuses fragrance while purifying the air.
Handmade cosmetic case, jewelry jelly roll, and baby shoes, $30- $45.
{
KP: Scent plays a major part in first impressions, so candles and diffusers are always super high on my list of must-haves. Lafco has some wonderful new scents, as well as our new line of Lampe Berger air purifiers. We also have some incredible statement antiques that I brought back from a recent trip. I love mixing antiques within a modern setting. Again, it’s all about balance. We also have some really beautiful chandeliers and lamps in the new store, as well as extraordinary rugs, which can all transform a tired room almost instantly.
{
WHAT INSPIRES YOUR DESIGN SENSE?
Rebel leather and Swarovski crystal bracelet, $225.
{
Kym Pelcher: My personal style is a lot like my store design — eclectic but focused. I would describe it as ‘classic vintage modern.’ I love to mix unexpected elements together, like a heavily distressed leather sofa with an uber-soft white fur throw, or a barn wood-covered wall juxtaposed with polished silver accessories. Balancing something intense with something peaceful to calm things down is key. In my design work, personal style, and even in my personal life, it’s all about balance.

1. Renowned designer Galia Lahav, who is based in Tel Aviv, Israel, custom-made Nicole’s breathtaking gown. “It was everything I wanted. Also, I had to have a bow on it. Growing up, my mom always had bows in my hair, and I had to add one on my dress just for her.” 2. A relaxed, boho vibe still filled the day, punctuated by the bridesmaids’ flowy Tiffany blue gowns and adorable flower crowns. 3. Celebrity cake artist Sylvia Weinstock created the couple’s half chocolate, half vanilla cake, embellished with edible flowers. 4. Christian’s father handmade wooden boxes to hold the centerpieces of roses and hydrangeas with pops of green.

NICOLE NELSON & CHRISTIAN SCHERER Plans for Nicole Nelson and Christian Scherer’s beach wedding — complete with a clam bake dinner, dancing on the sand, and fireworks over the water — were swept away by the one word: Joaquin, the hurricane heading straight for Rehoboth Beach, Del. “We had no venue as of Thursday (two days before the wedding),” Nicole says. “We had to replan the whole wedding.” Scrambling to find a safe, dry place to host the nuptials, the couple decided to move the ceremony and reception into the beach house they rented for their families that week. All of the furniture was moved out, and all of the Tiffany blue, pink, and ivory decorations moved in. The living room became a ceremony space and dance floor, and the enclosed porch became a mingling space for guests. “Thanks to Meg Gardner and her Blue Moon staff, and Meghan Clapp Garrison and the Dover Tent staff, everything came together,” Nicole says. “[Plus,] our families and friends who helped and traveled despite the weather.” Guests not only arrived, but also packed the dance floor all night. They also enjoyed a spread of over 1,500 cookies, made by family friends; late-night treats from an ice cream truck, that braved the storm; and a trolley ride to nearby bars for an after-party complete with pizza (the bride’s favorite food). “It was quite the experience, but everyone still came,” Nicole reflects. “I just couldn’t believe it. We had guests fly in from London, South Carolina, Pittsburgh, New Orleans, Texas, Colorado, Chicago, San Francisco. I don’t know how they all made it, but that’s what really meant the most to us!” 92

SUMMER RIPPEL & JONATHAN PEPE After being introduced by mutual friends, Summer Rippel and Jonathan Pepe embarked on a seven-year journey that would bring Summer back to her roots. Jonathan proposed to his bride in a field on her grandparents’ farm, right across the street from her childhood home. And, knowing how much family meant to both of them, the couple decided to hold the wedding ceremony and reception at the farm in Elizabeth, Pa., as well. From the blush, gold, and ivory colors, to the bouquets of peonies, dahlias, and roses, the bride had a hand in all aspects of her magical day. The “shabby chic” celebration incorporated decorations from Farm Fresh Rentals, but Summer spent more than a year shopping and DIY-ing to ensure that every detail was flawless. The reception featured a two-tiered, naked chocolate cake from Barton’s Flowers and Bake Shop, accompanied by pies, a cookie table, and a candy bar. The coffee lovers even enlisted a barista to serve up fresh brews during dessert! Summer says her favorite memory of the day was simply being surrounded by her family and friends. “It was such a fun party. It was nice seeing all of our loved ones, family, friends — everyone together, being happy for us, and being there for us.” — Sierra Smith
{
Summer found her dream dress while browsing at The Vow Boutique by herself. “It was the first one I ever tried on,” she says. She put off the purchase for a few months before returning to shop with family. “When I put it on [again], everyone was like, ‘That’s it!’”
ASHLEY JACOBSON & JOSEPH JACOB BRATEK When Ashley Jacobson’s office hosted a meet and greet for its clients, she ended up meeting her future husband! After 10 months of dating, Joseph “Jake” Bratek proposed to Ashley, with help from some of his friends. “Kind of fast,” Ashley says, “but when you know, you know!” Exactly two years after their chance encounter, the couple celebrated a quasi-traditional Serbian Orthodox wedding, held at the Holy Trinity Serbian Orthodox Cathedral. “Traditional Orthodox doesn’t allow the groom to watch the bride walk down the aisle,” she explains. “There was so much anticipation for us to see each other for the first time that day.” When Jake finally turned around and their eyes locked, Ashley says, “It was such an awesome, emotional, happy moment.” And Jake’s response? “Wow, just wow.” More than 400 guests from more than 10 different states filled the reception at the Hilton Garden Inn Pittsburgh/Southpointe. The venue glittered with champagne and gold décor under romantic strands of lights as the friends and family danced into the night — most memorably to the Serbian Kolo for Jake and a rodovy polka for Ashley. Their respective cultures blended perfectly into a beautiful bash. “Our lives intertwined at the right moment,” Ashley says. “I’ve never been so thankful for someone coming into my life than I am for him. He’s my perfect match!” — S.S.

Ashley’s ivory and champagne gold Allure Couture gown inspired the elegant color scheme for the day and gave the blushing bride an extra dose of shine.

DLF Designs pulled together calla lilies adorned with gemstones, spray roses, hypericin berries, wax flower, ruscus spray-painted gold on the tips, freesia, plumosa, and gold pearl strands to complete Ashley’s vision of a unique bouquet.
To honor Jake’s Serbian Orthodox roots, the couple celebrated with a traditional ceremony and even hosted a Skup beforehand. The pre-wedding festivity is a chance for guests to see the groom, drink, eat lamb, and dance the Kolo to the tambura band.
