Summer Skies O
ur city is exploding! The national attention on Pittsburgh as a thriving, hip city, fit for people of all ages, brings positive energy to everyone who lives in Western Pennsylvania. And now, our beautiful fountain at Point State Park is sending that new, positive energy skyward! It took five days and nights to capture the image you see on the cover. From the moment Executive Editor Nicole Barley realized the fountain was being turned on within days of our printer deadline, we knew it had to be the emblem for our Summer in the City issue. Art Director Jason Solak and Photographer Cayla Zahoran set to task to find the perfect skyline for the shot, but for one reason or another, the first four days of shooting the sparkling, jumping water just didn’t yield that perfect image. Then, in the early morning, just hours before our deadline, they got it. We love everything about it and hope you will be heading down to the Point to experience it for yourself. More great experiences await this summer, and we’ve got the details! Make sure to rally at the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix. Bring the entire family for a wonderful week of events throughout the city, culminating in a one-of-a-kind road race through Schenley Park. Trust us when we say you’ve got to be there! You have to come to our second annual One WHIRL Yoga Fest + Healthy Lifestyle Expo, sponsored by UPMC Health Plan, to experience more new, positive energy. It starts at 6 a.m. on Saturday, July 27 at Point State Park. With classes and vendors in every health discipline, we’ll be practicing and pulsing with peaceful energy until 6 p.m. that evening. Namaste, baby! Jack & Christine Tumpson
Here’s to a great summer!

Over the years, the Nonprofit Summit, hosted by the Greater Pittsburgh Nonprofit Partnership (GPNP) and The Forbes Funds, has become a much-anticipated event in the nonprofit community. Showcasing the rich diversity and vital contribution of the sector in the Pittsburgh area, the summit is an unparalleled opportunity for collaboration and the exchange of ideas. This year’s event was held in May and united nearly 800 nonprofit leaders, directors, and supporters. Huntington Bank served as one of the summit’s lead sponsors and presented the pre-conference workshop on health care reform. “At Huntington, we believe in helping those that make our community a better place,” says Susie Shipley, Huntington Bank regional president of the Western Pennsylvania and Ohio Valley regions. “This year’s summit was a huge success with compelling presentations on various topics nonprofits are facing today, as well as the celebration of excellence in nonprofit management.” The summit honors those who bring excellence at this area through their work with the Wishart Award and the Frieda Shapira Medal of Exemplary Leadership. The Wishart Award is presented biennially, and with a $10,000 cash stipend, to a local nonprofit human service or community development organization that has demonstrated sustained commitment to excellence in management and governance. Particular attention is paid to leadership among the organization’s staff and board of directors; accountability to the public trust; and continuous improvement of service delivery processes. This year’s Wishart winner, chosen by a selection committee — which included Huntington Bank Senior Commercial Relationship Manager Karen Rath — was the Jewish Family & Children’s Service of Pittsburgh (JF&CS). The independent (501)(c)(3) organization’s mission is to improve the quality of life of children, families, and adults of all ages in the Greater Pittsburgh area by providing psychological, employment, and social services. The finalists, Community Human Services Corporation and Familylinks, were also recognized at the summit. The Frieda Shapira Medal for Exemplary Leadership is presented in cooperation with the Jewish Healthcare Foundation, and includes a $5,000 cash stipend to an individual for their vision and service to nonprofits. For 2013, the award was presented to John Lovelace of UPMC. “John has been an unsung hero, has a heart of gold, and has a personal commitment to social justice that has spanned his entire career,” says Kate Dewey, The Forbes Fund president. The Huntington family salutes The Forbes Funds, the GPNP, Jewish Family & Children’s Service, and Lovelace for their extraordinary service. new roles McCrae Martino and Garrett Cooper, a South Hills native, have accepted new positions within The Forbes Funds. Overseeing grant-making initiatives, Martino has been promoted to vice president, where she develops innovative initiatives to support our region’s charitable organizations. Cooper’s new role as enterprise manager includes scaling solutions that save nonprofits time and money. “We are delighted to expand [McCrae’s] role,” says The Forbes Funds President Kate Dewey. “With Garrett’s help, The Forbes Funds will look to aggregate needs from these groups of organizations and pool their purchasing power to increase efficiency around these common needs.” The Forbes Funds, forbesfunds.org. — K.C.
ask jean As the financial editor of NBC’s TODAY show, an author, and AARP’s personal finance ambassador, Jean Chatzky has made it her mission to make money make sense. With eight bestselling books, the show, Money Matters, on RLTV, and a virtual money school, Chatzky is keeping Americans financially literate, one transaction at a time. Through personal experience with past money mistakes, dipping into her 401(k) — costing herself taxes Jean Chatzky and penalties — rather than rolling it over, she figured out her finances in the trenches, and is now helping others dig themselves out. We caught up with Chatzky during her stop in Pittsburgh to deliver the keynote speech at the Jewish Women’s Foundation of Greater Pittsburgh’s 10th Anniversary Celebration. Look no further for fiscal tips! — A.B. Q: What’s your financial philosophy? A: I live below my means, I save as much as possible, and I understand that more money doesn’t buy more happiness — it’s the control over the money that you have that brings people satisfaction and comfort.
MAKING THE COMMUNITY BETTER TAKES HARD WORK, DEDICATION, AND MORE PEOPLE LIKE YOU. At Huntington, we believe it’s important to do more for the community – whether it’s rolling up your sleeves and getting involved, or helping in other ways. That’s why we’re proud to support Jewish Family and Children’s Service and their tireless efforts to make a difference in the community.
Q: What can Americans do to get back on track as a nation financially? A: One step at a time. There’s no rocket science to this. It’s all about good habits, repeated over and over and over again — kind of like [directions on] a shampoo bottle. You wash, you rinse, you repeat. You save a little, you spend a little less, you save a little more, you spend a little less, and you invest it so you can grow and protect yourself, so that if something does go wrong, whether you get ill or if there is some sort of natural disaster, you don’t lose everything. Q: What’s your immediate advice to readers attempting to alleviate debt? A: Figure out exactly where you are — how much debt do you have and how much are you bringing in each month. And, what kind of changes can you make in order to spend a little less, so that you can repay what you owe in the way that makes the most sense (i.e. the quickest and the cheapest). ith the state of our country’s health looking less than perfect, UPMC Health Plan’s goal is to encourage our community to engage in a lifetime of healthy behaviors. One of the driving forces behind the initiative — as well as other community improvements — is Scott Lammie. Lammie, the chief financial officer of UPMC Health Plan and senior vice president of the UPMC Insurance Services Division, started working at UPMC in 1990, placing his focus on improving the health and lives of the people of Pittsburgh. “We’re known for our population health management,” Lammie says. “Anything that we can do to improve the health status of individuals, families, and communities is really what our mission is about.” UPMC Health Plan works with community stakeholders to involve the community with healthy activities and eating habits. One way the corporation is currently doing so is by serving as the title sponsor of the second annual One WHIRL Yoga Fest + Healthy Lifestyle Expo, taking place July 27 at Point State Park. These efforts haven’t gone unnoticed; UPMC Health Plan has won the Platinum Award for National Business Group on Health five years in a row. Lammie’s personal contributions have garnered recognition as well. He won the Manchester Bidwell Corporation’s 2012 Jesse W. Fife Jr. Fabric of Our Community Award for helping to establish a training program for Electronic Record Medical Assistant at the

Bidwell Training Center. The award goes to an outstanding individual who embodies the mission and vision of changing the lives of adults-in-transition in Southwestern Pennsylvania and contributes significantly to the career training industry. Lammie encourages the center’s students to get involved in after-school art programs to become well-rounded members of the community. “We’re convinced students will be more passionate about their academics if they have this type of education plan,” he says. “If you don’t have that broadbased curriculum that allows the arts and physical activities, it’s not constructive or helpful for a positive, healthy lifestyle.” A strong relationship with the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank ensures that even community members who struggle with hunger can still lead healthy lifestyles. “We work to support its food purchasing program and advocacy efforts, like the End Hunger Campaign,” Lammie says. “We also want the 25,000 families who are helped each month to have a good, healthy diet, so we work on enhancing the nutrition content of the food served.” Lammie’s passion for the cause goes further, thanks to a partnership with Joyce Rothermel, former co-founder and CEO of the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. The pair united in 2010 to establish the Southwestern Pennsylvania Food Security Partnership, which works with 12 local counties, the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, and the Westmoreland County Food Bank to increase good nutrition and decrease hunger. He also chaired the Boy Scouts of America, Greater Pittsburgh Council’s Scouting for Food campaigns in 2006 and 2007. The food drive is one of the organization’s biggest fundraisers. For his volunteer work with these organizations, as well as Little Sisters of the Poor, UPMC St. Margaret, Duquesne University, and United Way of Allegheny County, Lammie earned an award for outstanding volunteer fundraising in 2008 from the Western Pennsylvania Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals. But he doesn’t do it for the glory. Lammie’s core drive is to get Pittsburgh healthy and happy. “We encourage everyone to live healthy lifestyles, get active, eat well, and engage their friends and family members as well.” UPMC Health Plan, upmchealthplan.com.

Animal Instinct Walk on the wild side with the 2013 Jaguar XF AWD By Rachel Jones Photograph by Cayla Zahoran

S
himmering like thousands of diamonds in the sunlight, a metallic 2013 Jaguar XF waited patiently in the parking lot of Bobby Rahal Jaguar for us. WHIRL Staff Photographer Cayla Zahoran, WHIRL Photography Intern Nicole Burkhardt, and I climbed into the wild ride, unaware of how much of an animal this car really was. With the key sitting in the cup holder, the Start/Stop Engine button on the middle console blinked a soft orange glow. Pulsing like a heartbeat, it was waiting for me to press it, bringing it to life. That’s when I awakened the beast. The air vents opened like sleepy eyelids, and the silver gear shift rose up like a button nose. Turning the circle-shaped JaguarDrive Selection Shift — which felt more like adjusting the radio volume than choosing the gear — we slid out of the parking lot and onto Perry Highway. Smoothly gliding up the slopes, we embodied the slinky swagger of the jungle cat the car’s named after, as I controlled the actual animal I was driving. Cruising in the 2013 Jaguar XF, we were the queens of the jungle now. Aside from their sleek, swift nature, Jaguars can growl like nobody’s business. While I chatted with Sales Consultant Karl Klein about the car, General Manager Jim Guerry started the Jaguar F-Type’s ignition, unleashing a powerful, Indy-500-worthy boom across the showroom. Clearly, Jaguar wanted to roar back into the sports car segment after 50 years with the Jaguar F-Type. The Jaguar F-Type is one of the members of Jaguar’s family of four; the others being the Jaguar XJ, Jaguar XK, and Jaguar XF. The latter is the most accessible of the siblings. The four-door sedan was designed to look like a two-door coupe. So, thanks in part to its curves, the practical ride has a sportier feel, with its best feature being its Instinctive All-Wheel Drive™. Jaguar just brought back the AWD addition in 2013, making it perfect for rainy or snowy conditions. “The car’s always in rear-wheel drive,” Klein explains. “But when the roads are slicker, it automatically adjusts the torque up to 50 percent to the front wheels. You don’t have to do anything.” After passing its test drives in the Arctic Circle, the Jaguar XF can definitely handle any Pittsburgh road — no matter how “slippy.” Bobby Rahal Jaguar, 15035 Perry Hwy., Wexford. 724.940.3500. bobbyrahaljaguar.com.

Dick’s Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon VIP Party More than 500 supporters of Dick’s Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon gathered at LeMont Restaurant on Mt. Washington to celebrate the runners, organizers, and sponsors of the big event, including UPMC Health Plan, FedEx Ground, Toyota, Aasics, UPMC Sports Medicine, and Sheetz. The cocktail reception marked the fifth consecutive year of the marathon’s run in the city and featured speeches by Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Ryan Clark, coach Mike Tomlin, and president of the Pittsburgh Marathon’s Board of Directors, Skip Grinberg. “This event is a way of recognizing the people, companies, and charities that have been very supportive of the marathon over the years,” says Grinberg. “It’s a very nice way to kick off marathon weekend and show our appreciation for what these groups do for us.” The festivities also featured a fantastic fireworks display, donated by Pyrotecnico — and what better place to take it all in than Mt. Washington? — N.B.

May Intermezzo
Sandy Wholey, Lynda & Paul Schneider
Pittsburgh Global Connection hosted May Intermezzo to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society at its monthly networking event. The fundraiser was held at Piatt Place and featured complimentary hors d’oeuvres, wine, and desserts from Capital Grille and Mélange Bistro Bar. Champagne and chocolates, provided by Izzazu Salon & Spa, were savored in the Serrata! “We also had a fabulous silent auction of memorabilia,” says Lynda Schneider, CEO and founder of Pittsburgh Global Connection. That celebrity-laced silent auction left bidders starstruck, as it featured guitars autographed by Sir Paul McCartney, U2, and the Eagles; a customframed record autographed by Michael Jackson; and a custom-framed movie poster signed by the cast of The Hunger Games. May Intermezzo was held in conjunction with Racheallee Lacek, nominee for Man and Woman of the Year 2013 and founding member of PGC. Schneider says nominees striving to win this award hold various competing fundraisers. — K.C.

Dancing with the Celebrities of Pittsburgh
Chuck the Movieguy, Holly L. Dayton-Kirby
Some of Pittsburgh’s most popular talents were given the opportunity to show off a new kind of skill at Dancing with the Celebrities of Pittsburgh 2013. The annual event, held at the Westin Convention Center Hotel, raised more than $40,000, which will be divided evenly among this year’s two beneficiaries: the Kiwanis Club of Pittsburgh Foundation and the Catholic Charities Free Health Care Center. This year’s winner was Jill Vertes, star of Lifetime’s Dance Moms — clearly showing where her daughter gets her moves from. Second place went to Brian Krug, captain of the Gateway Clipper Fleet. “He had a hip movement like I’ve never seen for someone who has never danced!” says Luanne O’Brien, event director. Attendees also voted on a “People’s Choice Winner,” which was awarded to Terry Cellurale of Uniontown. Cellurale owns Bangz Hair Salon and is the director of the Italian Festival of Fayette County. Fourteen celebrities participated overall, O’Brien says, resulting in another fun, successful year! — K.C.

The Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America’s Western Pennsylvania/ West Virginia Chapter held its fifth annual Women of Distinction Awards Luncheon at Fairmont Pittsburgh this year, raising more than $90,000! The luncheon honors women in the region, chosen by CCFA committee members, who have proven to be exceptional in raising awareness of Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, whether they are directly involved with the CCFA or not. This year, honorees included Mary Del Brady for business, Aradnha Malhotra Oliphant for regional vitality, and Dorothy Pollon for philanthropy. “The honorees were wonderful this year,” says Kellie Surmacz, CCFA development manager. One of the afternoon’s highlights was speaker Patrick May, who spoke about finding a cure for pediatric patients as young as 10 years old. “The event was great overall,” says Surmacz. — K.C.

Pittsburgh Opera’s Maecenas Gala

More than 300 guests raised $380,000 for the Pittsburgh Opera at its 29th Annual Maecenas Gala XXIX. The evening of glamour, named for Gaius Cilnius Maecenas, a Roman statesman who is recognized as the patron of the arts, welcomed guests with a unique opportunity to dine and dance on the Benedum Center stage. The night started with a cocktail reception, where resident artists of the Opera entertained. “A curtain went up and there was a big reveal of the dining area for the guests,” says Samuel Badger, Pittsburgh Opera special events manager. “It was a very exciting moment!” The intimate, on-stage atmosphere was created by Bob Sendall of All in Good Taste Productions with beautiful florals and chandeliers. Another curtain revealed the Cityscape Orchestra, which encouraged the enjoyment of dancing and dessert until 1 a.m. Longtime board member Dr. Lisa Cibik chaired the event, which honored PNC Bank with the Maecenas Award and Dr. Jared Cohon, Carnegie Mellon University president, with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Monongahela Valley Hospital’s 25th Annual Gala
Deepak & Dr. Nirmal Kotwal, Shalmalee Kotwal, Wes Baff
Themed “An Evening to Remember,” the Monongahela Valley Hospital’s 25th Annual Gala raised $129,000! Held at the Westin Convention Center Hotel, the black-tie affair welcomed nearly 550 guests and has raised more than $2.5 million in its last 25 years. With a theme of “suave, silver elegance,” the evening’s proceeds directly benefited the hospital and its parent company, Mon-Vale Health Resources (MVHR). KDKA-TV’s Jennifer Antkowiak served as the evening’s emcee, and Finesse, a 14-piece “Superband,” provided the entertainment. Lou Panza, Jr., president and CEO of MVHR, joined in the fun as he brought out his drumming skills by playing two sets with the band. “It was highly entertaining,” says Mary Kaufman, MVHR communications specialist. “The crowd really enjoyed it.” First Federal Savings Bank received the 2013 Rose Award for Dimensions in Philanthropy; Nirmal Kotwal, M.D., received the Sickman-Levin Award for Dimensions in Medicine; Jeff Kotula received the 2013 Pallone Award for Dimensions in Board Leadership; and Carl Crawley, Jr. received the 2013 Gibbons Award for Dimensions in Community Service. — K.C.

Jayme Burke, Betsy Wotherspoon, Christie Knott
A Ladies Hospital Aid Society life member, outgoing President Laura Penrod Kronk was honored for her outstanding efforts since 2005, and as president since 2008, at LHAS’s Annual Meeting. Held at Duquesne Club, 150 attendees met for a business meeting, cocktail reception, and dinner, which finished with Sarris Candies’ custom chocolate Dachshunds, donated by Athena Sarris. “They were personalized and even had edible jeweled collars!” says LHAS Executive Director Dee Dee Troutman. The annual gathering kicked off upcoming programming, including the “Pups with a Purpose” fall gala. Under Kronk’s leadership, LHAS has grown by 78 members, and more than a million dollars worth of projects and programs have been supported. Luckily, she’s not straying far. “In her future role as executive committee advisor, Laura will continue to coordinate and fundraise for our pet therapy program and our teen dating violence awareness program,” says Troutman. She says her guidance and mentoring has been an inspiration to all. Incoming leader, Carole Kamin has filled the post as the 39th president of LHAS. — A.B.

Auto Palace Porsche Cayman Launch Party
Aaron & Teresa Comstock
Two hundred luxury car fans rolled into Auto Palace Porsche for a celebration to launch the 2014 Porsche Cayman, which has been creating a lot of buzz! A launch at Auto Palace is a party, which happens three to four times a year, and it’s always highly anticipated by guests. For the Cayman launch, delicious food, provided by chef and owner of Root 174 Keith Fuller, delighted tastebuds, as well as a specialty Cayman cocktail, served by Liquid Flair Entertainment. Engine House 25 catered to wine enthusiasts, and sweets were served by Cupcake Couture. The night was especially exciting because of how well the Cayman was received by new and existing customers. “One event attendee was so thrilled with the 2014 Cayman that he purchased it on the spot and drove it out of the showroom!” says General Manager Aaron Comstock. A review in The Wall Street Journal says: “The 2014 redesign [has] more power, more lightness and chassis stiffness, more powertrain soundscaping and interior elegance, all of which follows a growing and agreeable commonality with big-brother 911 Carrera.” — A.B.

Orr’s Jewelers locations in Squirrel Hill and Sewickley were buzzing with customers for the company’s annual bridal trunk show and its first-ever Fred Leighton trunk show! Guests, engaged couples, and those soon-tobe engaged mingled with designers and made fun decisions. Nearly 100 couples stopped by the Squirrel Hill location to shop and design their wedding bands. This year featured designers Jeff Cooper, Henri Daussi, Maylin K, and Christian Bauer. A tally of guests was in the hundreds as well for the Fred Leighton showcase in Sewickley, which displayed the new Estate Collection filled with authentic, vintage pieces, popular with Hollywood’s glitterati. Some of the highlighted designs included a tiara worn by Natalie Portman, a yellow gold flower pin worn by Jackie Onassis, and earrings worn by Julianna Margulies. “Since the pieces are one-of-a-kind, they are elite,” says Orr’s sales associate Ivy Gleason. “Everyone was so impressed.” — K.C.

“It’s evident the community is compassionate,” says The Friendship Circle Executive Director Rabbi Mordy Rudolph, who founded the organization with his wife, Rivkee. Speaking on the fifth annual fundraiser, held at the Omni William Penn Hotel, Rudolph shared that nearly 600 guests raised $170,000 for the rapidly growing organization that facilitates social interactions between children with special needs and teenage volunteers. The program, established in Pittsburgh’s Jewish Community in 2006, has more than 240 teen volunteers enjoying friendships with 125 children with special needs. Themed “Friendship is Priceless,” the casual dinner party featured a cocktail hour; speeches; dinner and an auction; and senior recognition and gift presentations. Co-chairs Ina Gumberg and Amy Weiss, with the board of directors and event committee, recognized the 2013 graduating class — nearly 60 participants, approximately one quarter of the teen volunteers! “The event’s success shows how large the organization has grown,” says Rudolph. “It’s not just about how many volunteers, but the fact that the community is an accepting one and an accommodating one.” — A.B.

More than $78,000 was raised for the East End Cooperative Ministry (EECM), an interfaith ministry dedicated to assisting at-risk children, the hungry, the homeless, and others in need, at the seventh annual A Flavor of the East End! Held at the Pittsburgh Opera’s Strip District headquarters, the evening featured fare from top East End eateries, such as Salt of the Earth, Union Pig & Chicken, Tender Bar + Kitchen, and Verde — not to mention, Wild Purveyors, Toast! Kitchen & Wine Bar, and Lucca Ristorante, among others. As guests enjoyed a mystery box extravaganza and silent auction, music was provided by Dr. James Johnson and his wife, Pamela, of the Afro American Music Institute (AAMI). Honorary chair and UPMC Chief Diversity & Inclusion Officer Candi Castleberry-Singleton shared personal anecdotes of overcoming poverty and adversity, and explained the work that EECM is doing — including the construction of a Community House, which continues to progress. In fact, Community Relations Director Ammon Ripple says next year’s event includes plans for a housewarming party. “This is an exciting time in the history of our organization!” he says. — A.B.

Looking to turn up the heat on your summer calendar? These concerts, galas, and gatherings will have you celebrating the season in style. Plus, we’re commemorating the return of the Point State Park Fountain!
Water Works
The fountain at Point State Park is a point of reference, an undeniable icon, a sentinel of the city’s three rivers — and this June marked the magnificent return of the water sculpture. After a dry spell due to two year’s worth of renovations, the reinvigorated fountain and surrounding park, first established in 1974, is the largest reconstruction in Pennsylvania State Park history. The fountain’s central column reaches heights of 150 feet, and improvements include a cascade waterfall, new stone paving surfaces, plumbing, and lighting. The fountains three fanned water features, referred to as “peacock tails,” symbolize the three rivers, and so, the magical place where the Allegheny, Ohio, and Monongahela Rivers converge (along with the Wisconsin Glacial Flow aquifer, which runs quietly and powerfully underground) is the point where we begin our summer in the city. From kayaking to biking, picnics to people watching, there’s plenty to see and do along Pittsburgh’s riverfront. Visit the fountain between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m., spring through fall, and soak in the beauty of the city. For more information, visit pointstatepark.com.
Venture Outdoors: Kayak Pittsburgh
Breathe in the great outdoors with Pittsburgh’s trails, parks, and waterways. Kayak Pittsburgh, a project of Venture Outdoors, offers hourly kayak and bicycle rentals in the North Shore, Millvale Riverfront Park, and North Park. Several guided, themed kayaking programs are available all summer through Venture Outdoors for $30-$75. Alyson Walls of Venture Outdoors says kayaking on Pittsburgh’s three rivers is popular with tourists and long-time residents. “It’s a great way to see the sights — including the city skyline, Point State Park, historic bridges, PNC Park, and Heinz Field — from a new vantage point and experience the tranquility of the water,” Walls says. “You might also spot birds, fish, and other wildlife along the shore.” Even first-time kayakers need not worry. The flat-water kayaking is perfect for beginners, and it’s easy to pick up the technique after just a few minutes of instructions from the staff. But you will definitely feel the burn! “It’s a great upper body and core workout,” Walls says. “I also find it very peaceful, quiet, and relaxing to listen to the water lapping around your kayak and paddle. Solo kayaks are $16/hour, tandem kayaks are $21.50/hour, and bicycles are $8/ hour. Kayak Pittsburgh, kayakpittsburgh.org. Photograph by Cayla Zahoran, from Venture Outdoors.

“
It has become an American icon, and for many, a lifestyle.
Marque of the Year: Mustang It’s official: Mustang has been named the 2013 Marque of the Year! With its 50th anniversary this year, Dan DelBianco says it is the perfect time to award the title. “We wanted to get ahead of the curve and start the celebration this summer,” says DelBianco, Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix executive director. “Next year, you’ll be seeing a lot of events for the Mustang.” The Marque of the Year is chosen based on its relevance to the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix, the support it will get from the crowd, and the corporate support the marque provides. With the Neighborhood Ford Store acting as the second largest sponsor of the event and the undeniable popularity of the Mustang, this year’s pick was an easy one. “Not only is the Mustang one of the most recognized nameplates under the Ford umbrella, it is one of the most popular cars ever made,” says Joey Thurby, chairman of the Neighborhood Ford Store and owner of Riverside Motor Sales in Confluence, Pa. “The original American pony also has a rich history in automotive racing, which is an obvious complement to the spirit of the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix.” DelBianco says he likes being able to feature an American car as the Marque of the Year, as most of the show cars are from Europe. With Jerry Longstreth of the Greater Pittsburgh Mustang Club helping to coordinate the Marque of the Year, everyone at the event will be able to admire and honor the cool car. “It holds a special place in American automotive history and boasts a mass of passionate followers,” Thurby says. “It has become an American icon, and for many, a lifestyle.”

Behind the Wheel Lined with hay bales — and sometimes, stone walls —
the track at Schenley Park is 2.3 miles of authentic automobile bliss.
We haven’t been lucky enough to experience the thrill ourselves, but the racers across the nation who have can’t stop raving about it! Visualize the rush, turn-by-turn, as told by a Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix racer.
Turn 1: The first corner is fast, with some unfavorable pavement bumps. Be careful accelerating up the hill, as there’s no run-off opportunity. Turn 2: After a subtle left curve, get ready for the fastest straight section of the track. Cars reach their top speed here.
Turns 3-5: Control that speed coming through the tricky hay bale chicane. Drivers must go left, right, then left again quickly without running into the hay bales. Hitting the barriers will slow you down, which will prepare you for the upcoming downhill.
Turn 6: After weaving through drain culverts — while maintaining an accelerated downhill speed — the track travels across Panther Hollow Bridge to Phipps Conservatory & Botanical Gardens to the sixth turn. Turns 7-8: Coming by Westinghouse Pond, the pavement gets
Turns 11-12: The blind, 90-degree left turn can be tricky. Experienced drivers will use the “Schenley Line” until the long left turn. Using 3/4th throttle, the 13th turn pops up quickly. The “Schenley” Line is the ideal path through turns, which allows drivers to take a turn at the fastest speed in the shortest amount of time. It’s a must when avoiding the manhole covers and storm drains along the course!
Turn 13: Coming out of the tunnel of trees and up onto the golf course, this hard right turn at German Hill requires late apex that avoids a storm gate in the middle of the track. Power uphill on your way to the next turn. Turns 14-17: Cars have a hard time sticking to the pavement that weaves through the golf course. Turn 15 at the VIP Pavilion is the finish line for drivers participating in the Sunoco Vintage Lap Experience on July 20.
a little rough on the left side. It smoothes out once you segue onto Schenley Drive.
Turn 18: This sharp right slows everyone down. Get there first to gain a major lead.
Turns 9-10: This is a good passing zone, especially if you can sneak in the corner into the ninth turn. But if it has rained, this portion of the track will stay wet for a long time. After a long left turn, watch for a tree sitting inches away from the road’s edge. Everyone brakes here!
Turn 19: You have to look over your shoulder to see the apex of this sharp, downhill switchback. Be careful on the stone-lined track! Turn 20: End on a good note: the last turn is a sharp hairpin to the right, leading to the straightaway finish. Congrats!

The Driving Force To put on a mostly free event,
the crew behind the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix needs the support of its sponsors. Their dedication enhances the fun of the event and brings in extra donations for the charities. Without their strong relationships, the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix would not be the spectacular summer event it is today!
Sunoco Pump Perks, one of SHOP ‘n SAVE’s sponsors, will host the Sunoco Vintage Lap Experience on July 20. Don’t miss out!
SHOP ‘n SAVE In its 13th year as the presenting sponsor for the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix, SHOP ‘n SAVE’s participation is possible through its independent owners and operators. “All [100] of our stores [in Western Pennsylvania] are independently owned, so our retailers are committed to supporting local charities or events,” says Rich Haeflein, advertising account manager for SHOP ‘n SAVE. “They live and work in the community, and really have a dedication to getting involved.” Retailers and other members of the SHOP ‘n SAVE team will be working the “Speedway to Savings” Hospitality Tent at Schenley Park. The giant, 80-by-60-foot tent is open to the public, and attendees will enjoy free food, drinks, and live entertainment. While its a great place to watch the race, the “Speedway to Savings” Hospitality Tent will also host Kellog’s NASCAR Simulator, the Oscar Mayer Wiener Mobile, and more fun! “Everything is free, but we do have donation jars set up in the tent to raise more money for the charities,” Haeflein says. “On average, we raise an additional $10,000 from people visiting the event. I love knowing that all of these funds will be going to two very deserving charitable organizations.” SHOP ‘n SAVE, shopnsavefood.com.

For the eighth year in a row, the group will provide the Official Truck of the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix: a 2013 F-150 Platinum SuperCrew in black with bold tri-color racing stripes. Each year, Neighborhood Ford Store team members load up hundreds of boxed lunches in the bed of the Official Truck to deliver to Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix volunteers. “This event is a shining example of volunteerism at its best,” says Joey Thurby, chairman of the Neighborhood Ford Store and owner of Riverside Motor Sales in Confluence, Pa. “[The volunteers] are the true champions of the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix races.” In addition to the Official Truck, the Neighborhood Ford Store will also provide a matching Mustang, several other vehicles, the Kid’s Pit Stop activity tent, and an interactive Ford EcoBoost “ Power Tour.” “The Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix is the perfect marriage of the things we are most passionate about,” Thurby says. “As so many of our dealerships are family-run businesses, we are particularly passionate about supporting causes that improve the lives of other local families.” Neighborhood Ford Store, NeighborhoodFordStore.com.

Selling cars for every lifestyle at 12 different locations, Bobby Rahal Automotive Group offers its own version of a car show at the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix. “We have a big tent that’s basically an outdoor showroom,” says Rick Speicher, vice president of operations at Bobby Rahal Automotive Group. “We take all of the brands we represent and display the different models in and around the open area.” While getting automobile enthusiasts excited about the luxurious cars, the platinum sponsor also provides a special treat for its clients. Customers are invited to participate in a free luncheon, as a way to thank them for their valued business. “We enjoy providing a special part of that weekend for our customers,” Speicher says. “A lot of our clients already go to the event, so it’s nice when they can join our VIP list, too.” Invited customers should RSVP quickly, as this event fills up quickly! Bobby Rahal Automotive Group President Eric Hessinger says the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix is a great event to give back to the community and connect with clients. Speicher adds that the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix also offers a grand opportunity to explore the rich history of the cars there. “It really is a great event,” Speicher says. “We’re so glad to be associated with such a great cause.” Bobby Rahal Automotive Group, bobbyrahal.com.
Care for a cause One of the best parts about the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix is the event’s dedication to supporting two local charities: NHS Allegheny Valley School and the Autism Society of Pittsburgh. Any profits
raised at the event go directly to funding these charities, helping provide the tools and resources they need to succeed. Donations are also welcome, and in the event’s 31 years, more than $3.2 million has been raised. Both the Autism Society of Pittsburgh and NHS Allegheny Valley School are honored through the work of their stellar ambassadors.
NHS Allegheny Valley School Since its beginnings in 1960, NHS Allegheny Valley School has been dedicated to providing services for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Over the years, the organization has grown to offer programs and facilities to more than 900 children and adults. In 2008, Allegheny Valley School became a wholly owned subsidiary of NHS Human Services. NHS is one of the nation’s leading nonprofit providers of community-based human services. “We provide residential organizations and day program services,” says Dorothy Gordon, NHS Allegheny Valley School chief development officer. “All services are individualized, so each person receives what they need to live to their fullest potential and as independently as possible.” The generous funds from the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix help NHS Allegheny Valley School accomplish its mission. From an outdoor rec space to tables for classrooms, the charity utilizes the money to provide its consumers with the equipment and learning tools they need. Staff members and their friends and families do their part at the event to volunteer at the merchandise tent, selling Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix gear — including water! — and talking about the charity. Several other events throughout the year support NHS Allegheny Valley School, including the Friends of AVS Golf Open on August 12. Amy Rocini, NHS Allegheny Valley School program development and community engagement coordinator, says the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix “is truly an amazing event. The volunteers have remained engaged, and it’s a great gathering of people who love coming together.” NHS Allegheny Valley School, 1996 Ewings Mill Road, Coraopolis. 412.299.7777. avs.nhsonline.org.
The Autism Society of Pittsburgh When psychiatrists first said frigid mothers were to blame for autistic children, the loving parents who raised them were outraged. They came together with Dr. Bernard Rimland in 1965 to create the Autism Society of America, making it the single greatest voice to spread the truth about autism. Dan Torisky, co-founder and president of the Autism Society of Pittsburgh, was one of those original members, and moved on to help establish a local chapter in 1967. “Our mission is to provide advocacy, support, and thorough information on all care, treatment, educational, and rehabilitative service options to those with autism spectrum disorders, autism-involved parents and families, and the professionals who work with them,” Torisky says. “We also encourage, expand, and develop competence in a continuum of appropriate service options.” Through the generous donations gathered at the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix and other local fundraisers, the Autism Society of Pittsburgh is able to better its initiatives, including its group homes, autistic children’s education program, and more. The charity has been involved with the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix since auto enthusiasts Art McGovern and Mary Beth Gmitter teamed up with Torisky and the Autism Society of Pittsburgh’s late board member Myron Cope to launch the first event. Once NHS Allegheny Valley School signed on, too, the charities and the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix were ready to roll. “We couldn’t do it without NHS Allegheny Valley School,” Torisky says. “And a bunch of wonderful people who love to race and show vintage, classic, and specialty cars.” The Autism Society of Pittsburgh, 4371 N. Pike, Monroeville. 412.8567223. autismsocietypgh.org.
Ambassadors To put a face to the charities, each one has chosen an ambassador who reflects the positive influence the charity has on the local community. Brandon Fisher represents NHS Allegheny Valley School, and Anita Iyengar represents the Autism Society of Pittsburgh. While advocating their charity’s mission and good works, the ambassadors are also major participants in the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix’s events and parades. “Brandon has been our ambassador for the last eight years, and he does a great job,” says Gordon. The Autism Society of Pittsburgh has nominated Anita as its long-term ambassador, too. “We were going to have a different ambassador every year,” explains Torisky. “But we wanted to watch them grow and develop over the years. Anita has really blossomed since she started as our ambassador.” Photographs from NHS Allegheny Valley School, Autism Society of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix.

Share the Health With so many community members coming together at the second annual One WHIRL Yoga Fest + Healthy Lifestyle Expo, we thought it was the perfect time to help our neighbors in need. WHIRL Publishing has partnered with the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank to “share the health” through a virtual food drive. When you visit whirlmagazine.com/yogafest or showclix. com to make your reservation for the event, click the “donate” button. Then, virtually shop for food items you’d like to donate to the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. Lisa Scales, CEO of the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, says the items are all cases and bulk items, as these funds can be stretched through wholesale and bulk buying. “In fact, for each dollar donated, the [Greater Pittsburgh Community] Food Bank can provide $5 worth of food and services,” Scales says. “This time of year is especially critical because children who usually get free meals at school might go hungry in the summer, so the [Greater Pittsburgh Community] Food Bank needs to prepare for this increased need.” Make your donation while reserving your space today! Tickets for the second annual One WHIRL Yoga Fest + Healthy Lifestyle Expo are $35. Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, pittsburghfoodbank.org.

Learn more about UPMC Health Plan’s healthy lifestyle programs and initiatives at its booth at the second annual One WHIRL Yoga Fest + Healthy Lifestyle Expo. Here’s a tip, suitable for summer, from Amanda Budzowski, a member of UPMC Health Plan’s awardwinning MyHealth team. “Longer days mean more time to work in healthy lifestyle choices that help form lifelong habits,” Budzowski says. She recommends taking a family trip to the local farmers market to shop for fresh produce. While you’re there, try to walk for at least 30 minutes to get your recommended daily dose of physical activity. Plan that night’s meals to include fruits and vegetables on roughly half of every plate. The rest should be mostly whole grains, beans, legumes, seeds, and nuts. After dinner, take a family walk or try a new outdoor activity. UPMC Health Plan, upmchealthplan.com.

So Fly Like the iridescent, colorful wings of a butterfly flutter with light and life, so too does the new Summer 2013 L’été Papillon De Chanel collection. From zesty Inimitable Waterproof Mascara shades (in oceanic aqua, bright lemon and lime, and sky blue) to juicy, fruit-inspired colors for lips (think peach and raspberry Rouge Coco Shine Lipstick) this summer line is electric and bold. Pump it up — How many times have you wished your hair had more volume? Volumetry, a new product line from L’Oréal Professionnel, is helping that wish come true, says Toni Lowther, stylist at Studio Seven, where the treatment and at-home haircare accoutrements are now available. “The Volumetry portfolio includes Volumceutic, a clinical strength in-salon treatment that removes build-up, reinforces the hair structure, and lightly conditions for a bodified, airy finish that lasts up to three days. There are four at-home products to support the treatment: Anti-Gravity Effect Volume Shampoo, Conditioner, Root Lift Spray, and Powder Fresh SOS Refreshing Spray. One of my favorite products in the portfolio has to be the Volumetry Powder Fresh SOS Refreshing Spray. It provides volume that is instantly revived and scalp and length are durably refreshed. A quick restroom break and your hair will come back looking noticeably fuller. It also achieves a voluminous blow-dry with no residue. This product is pocket-sized, perfect for on-the-go, and retails for $19.” We are pumped to try it all! Studio Seven, 301 Franklin Farms Road, Washington. 724.228.5333. studiosevenhair.com.
breathe deeply One of our favorite indulgences is to buy delicious-smelling candles, and we can’t wait to light one of the soy-based, pure vegetable wax Reclaim candles from 1820 House Candle Co. The small business is based in East Palestine, Ohio, with products now available locally at Mid-Atlantic Mercantile. Hand-poured and created with essential oil blend fragrances, we can enjoy aromatherapy and the calming effect of a softly burning flame without the worry of inhaling synthetic chemicals. The packaging features recycled and sustainable components, and the candles are poured in 40-percent recycled glass containers. The botanical scents include Sea Salt & Water Mint, Earthy Vetiver & Tarragon Elixir, and Sandalwood & Cardamom. Ahh! 1820 House Candle Co., 1820house.com. A denim girl at heart, Kristi Moss dedicates an entire wall — denoted the denim bar — at Kristi Boutique to best-of-brand jeans. Her inviting Aspinwall locale carries more than 50 signature brands, including Waverly Grey, Forest & Culver, and Tart. Moss, 26, planned and implemented the shop’s grand opening last summer just as quick as she fell in love with playing dress-up at age five. “When I buy a piece for the boutique, I envision it styled the way I would style it,” she says. “It is so fun to work with a diverse set of clients and to see their take on their own wardrobes. It gives me so much more perspective and education.” Her adoration for fashion and industry expertise sharply reflects through polished, upscale yet affordable merchandise chosen for the space, not to mention Moss’ frequent workings with a local tailor for her clients’ custom needs. Enjoy a complimentary coffee as you shop — how can you go wrong?

style ethics: “I think every woman should own a really great pair of boots. I bought these distressed boots about four years ago from Roberta Weissburg, and I’ve probably worn them a couple hundred times — they only get better with time. I also couldn’t live without a basic black blazer. I pair mine with everything from dresses to denim to slacks. It is such a versatile piece that will instantly pull your look together.”
Lucchese Oiled Calf Western Riding Boot, Roberta Weissburg Leathers.
great expectations: “I am constantly watching Kate Hudson and her style choices. She’s got such a ‘cool girl’ vibe about her in an effortless sort of way. I love blouses and, therefore, I love Joie. The brand’s classic designs are so easy to wear and can work well season after season. For scarves, I love Theodora & Callum. They have the most exotic prints and beautiful colors. For denim, you must try Paige and Hudson. [Both brands] will change the way you think about your backside, trust me. It’s like magic. I also think DL1961 is really on the verge of something great.”
well-rounded: “The boutique is a very relaxed and casual environment because that’s who I am. I am most comfortable in a great pair of jeans, a loose-fitting sweater, boots, and a knockout scarf. I am always changing up the look of my clothing choices by adding accessories, like stacks of bracelets, headbands, and scarves. I could own 100 fit-and-flare dresses and skirts. I like clean styles that I can transform with jewelry and accessories.” Kristi Boutique, 345 Freeport Road, Aspinwall. 412.782.2033. kristiboutique.com.

Kickin’ It by Nicole Barley | Photographs by Mariah Wild
We’re all about sporting casual, cute kicks in the summer — they keep our feet cool, and they provide the support our soles need during the extra time we spend strolling outdoors. Since flip flops aren’t always work-appropriate, and for those days when we need a break from heels, we’re looking to top-siders, loafers, and canvas slip-ons for easy-breezy accessorizing. Guys can upgrade their foot game, too, with masculine moccasins, airy oxfords, and neon-accented shoes. ‘Tis the season to step it up!
From work to play, these adorable oxfords pair well with sundresses, shorts, and cuffed jeans!

Go Sockless! Guys, roll the hem of your pants for a preppy, trendy look with these loafers.
Upgrade your workday wear with these lightweight kicks, made with a crepe rubber sole.
“This blouse is the perfect blend of femininity and sexiness. It looks smashing with the season’s colored denim,” says Kristi Moss, owner of Kristi Boutique.

daisy eau so fresh
by Marc Jacobs
This energizing eau de toilette embodies the phrase, “fresh as a daisy,” with its top notes of grapefruit, raspberry, pear, and green. Soft and sensuous, fruity and fizzy, Marc Jacobs Daisy Eau So Fresh bursts with florals (literally — take a look at the blooming cap), including jasmine, wild rose, violet, and apple blossom. The base notes of musk, Virginia cedar, and plum transform a spray from simply sweet to a multifaceted mix of floral and fruit. Wear the clean, light scent to energize and carry you through the work day. Available at Schiller’s Pharmacy, 2.5 fl. oz./$85. Photograph from LAmade/The Picket Fence.

coco mademoiselle The limited-edition, extra-large version of Coco Mademoiselle by Chanel thrills us. Provocative, Parisian, and powerful, just like its namesake, Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel, is this blush-colored eau de parfum. At once bohemian and chic, the seductive scent is layered with bergamot, mandarin, Indonesian patchouli, vetiver, vanilla, and musk, with a center around the two ingredients that are the basis for all Chanel parfums — Jasmin Absolute and May Rose Absolute. Channel your inner lioness (Chanel’s astrological talisman) as you float on a lovely cloud of Coco. Available at Macy’s at South Hills Village and Nordstrom at Ross Park Mall, 6.8 fl. oz./$195.

central park south
by Bond No. 9
Blackcurrant buds, clementine, and green ivy spiral elegantly skyward at the top of Bond No. 9’s Central Park South. The spring flowerinspired bouquet then settles into a seductive center of heavy tuberose, acacia, yellow jonquil, jasmine, and orris, the root of the iris flower. Woody notes, including sandalwood and cedar, act as an anchor. The perfumers describe the bottle’s “luscious swirling blossom” as a “stylized fantasy,” the figurative flowers symbolizing the equally bold and bright scent inside. Like the iconic New York City location, the perfume is rich with greenery, and airs of sophisticated high fashion. Available at Larrimor’s, 1.7 fl. oz./$190. Austin’s Playroom Project Luncheon & Fundraiser Austin’s Playroom Project, an initiative of the Mario Lemieux Foundation, hosted its 14th Annual Luncheon & Fundraiser at Fairmont Pittsburgh, featuring a silent auction, gourmet lunch, and special jewelry promotion by LAGOS. Mario Lemieux Foundation Executive Director Nancy Angus tabulated nearly $100,000 in proceeds. The celebration of the nonprofit’s 14th year of success, chaired by Nathalie Lemieux, Debbie Nute, Kathy Monti, and Meg Smith, will benefit a playroom at the Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center in Johnstown. The idea for Austin’s Playroom Project came from a personal experience when the Lemieuxs’ son Austin was born prematurely and their two older daughters, toddlers at the time, had nowhere to play during the time spent at the hospital. In an effort to improve this experience for families, the organization has thus far created 28 playrooms in regional medical facilities! — K.C.

POWER Promises A Night of Hope It was another successful year and an evening of pleasant surprises at the 19th Annual POWER Promises A Night of Hope! Nearly 350 guests helped raise more than $125,000 for the organization, which serves women in recovery. Chaired by Cindy Shapira and held at Rodef Shalom Congregation, the night featured dinner catered by Tallulah’s; vegetable lasagna and tasty beef brisket were served alongside various salads. The Seeds of Hope Award was presented to Judi and Ron Owen, who have generously supported POWER and have been very active in the recovery community. Continuing their support of the cause, the Owens surprised guests during the live auction with a generous donation of $25,000 for a new van. As always, a highlight of the night was the presentation of three graduates of the program, whose stories were told by local news anchors. “The presentation of the graduates were very emotional and reminded us of why we do the work we do,” says POWER Development and Communications Associate Emily Stimmel. “It’s a very impressive thing to hear these stories and see how far these women have come.” — M.V.

Guests, donors, committee members, and volunteers — totaling 275 — gathered for a charitable evening at The Venue at Bella Sera, where more than $25,000 was raised for CASA for Kids of Washington County. The organization trains volunteers to serve as fact-finders and speak for abused and neglected children involved in the Washington County juvenile court system. The event showcased a fullcourse, sit-down dinner featuring the “Seasons of Italy,” which was prepared by chefs from Angelo’s Restaurant, Bartram House Bakery, Franco’s Trattoria, Merante Brothers Market, and Bella Sera. Former American Idol contestant Adam Brock rocked the house with The Jazz Trio, and WTAE-TV’s Michelle Wright served as honorary chair and mistress of ceremonies. “This was one of our best events ever,” says Fradelle Karpen, 2013 Chefs for CASA chair. “There was so much energy, and less time was focused on speeches and more on eating, drinking, dancing, and just having a good time.” — M.S.

Pittsburgh Takes a Bow More than $350,000 was raised for Pittsburgh Public Theater at its annual gala celebration! Nearly 500 guests entered the Wyndham Grand Hotel for a fabulous evening of three acts, which included cocktails and hors d’oeuvres with an artistic flair; dinner, dancing, and a special salute to Pittsburgh; and surprises and entertainment. Co-chaired by Cathy and Michael Ginsberg, Linda Kortlandt, and Veronica and Dennis Yablonsky, the night featured introductions from PPT’s Producing Artistic Director Ted Pappas and honorary chair Franco Harris. Patrons Nadine Bognar, Jim Roddey, Frank and Debbie Coonelly, and Bill and Debbie Demchak supported the festivities as well. A live auction, a tribute to famous Pittsburgh composers, and entertainment by Nick Dialosio’s band and vocalists kept the crowd on its feet. “It was really cool because all of the songs performed by the vocalists were written by Pittsburghers!” says PPT Communications Manager Margie Romero. — M.S.

f lat top Behind the gargoyle-guarded gate at the end of a 0.2-mile driveway sits this home, influenced by Wright’s awe-inspiring style of architecture. The mansion mimics his famous Kentuck Knob home with its brick exterior and flat roof. The four bedroom, four-and-a-half bath, ranch-style home offers a sunken family room on the lower level. Relax at the fireplace and wet bar while admiring the gorgeous greenery outside through a wall of windows. Enjoy the serene setting in other venues, such as the cantilevered balcony and in-ground pool with stone accents. Beautiful natural accents imbue the indoors, too, with granite kitchen countertops and marble bathroom countertops. For more information, contact Barbara A. This Fourth of July, exercise your right to bare arms with sleeveless tees and tank tops. To tone those triceps and biceps, along with your core and legs, try this circuit workout from Larry Scott, marathoner and fitness enthusiast. “I love circuits because they don’t waste time,” he says. “This is a full-body workout that also builds your endurance.” Go behind the scenes at whirlmagazine.com for how-to videos and a look at our photo shoot with Larry!

See-Saw Lunges
Stand with your feet together and hands on your hips. Step your left foot forward, and lunge into a 90° angle. Bring your feet back together. Step your left foot back, and lunge into a similar position. Bring your feet back together. Repeat with your right leg.
Repeat the seven steps in this circuit — without resting in between — four times through for the perfect workout. Just maintain a steady pace and intensity level, and remember to breathe!
Larry says: “I like to do one arm at a time. When you isolate the muscles, each arm gets an equal workout.”
5 60 seconds:
Shoulder Press
Stand with your feet shoulderwidth distance apart. Hold a dumbbell in your left hand at shoulder height, keeping your right hand on your core for balance. Push your left arm up until fully extended. Lower it back to the starting position. Repeat with your right arm.
60 seconds:
Dumbbell Rows
Kneel down on all fours with your back flat and arms shoulder-width distance apart. Hold a dumbbell in your right hand. Pull the weight up at a 90° angle, making sure your elbow doesn’t go above your back. Return back to the start position. Repeat with your left arm.

Plant your hands and feet in a push-up position, with your arms fully extended. Lift your right arm off the ground, and rotate your hips to the right. Open up so your weight is on your left arm and your right foot is resting on top of your left foot. Fully extend your right arm out at shoulder-height, holding the pose for 30 seconds. Rotate back in to the push-up position. Repeat on the left side for 30 seconds.

Shoulder Raise
Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart. Hold a dumbbell in your right hand at your side. Raise your arm out in front of you until it’s level with your shoulder. Lower it back to the starting position. Repeat with your left arm.
Larry says: “I know it’s tempting, but don’t rest in between sides!”

hen Carisa Sirak and Ryan Griffin first told each other their life stories, it seemed like they were reading from the same book! They both majored in engineering at Big 10 schools, moved to Phoenix, earned their MBAs, and moved back to the East Coast for family reasons. Within a year of meeting, the similar soul mates were engaged. “I was opening birthday gifts from him, and the last gift was a robe with my new monogram,” Carisa says. “When I looked up, he was already down on one knee.” Carisa and Ryan hosted their ceremony and reception on the 12th floor of Three PNC Plaza with an outdoor ceremony on the terrace, overlooking the Pittsburgh skyline. Sticking to a modern and clean theme, the couple decorated the space with white, gray, black, and spring green elements. Of course, this Italian couple made food a priority, sharing an extensive, family-style menu. Guests also sipped on the couple’s signature drink, the Veranda: a refreshing mix of Wigle Whiskey, fresh lemon juice, and basil-black pepper simple syrup. We’ll drink to that!

Golfing has always been an important part of Adrienne Tramontina and Michael Peterson’s relationship. Their first date was on the greens, and it’s the course Michael took for his proposal, too. “He asked me to get his wallet out of his golf bag before we went to dinner,” Adrienne says. “There was a ring in the pocket.” When they married soon after, Michael’s brother, who served as the best man, framed the scorecard from their first date and presented it to the newlyweds during his speech. Celebrating the ceremony and
reception at the Embassy Suites Pittsburgh — International Airport, the couple chose a navy blue and bright green color scheme with preppy, striped details. Centerpieces from Puhlman Flower Shoppe completed the décor. Adrienne dazzled in a Maggie Sottero gown from Sorelle Bridal Salon. The halter top with a ruffled neckline offered a fun twist to a classic style. And, after tearing it up on the dance floor, guests finished the evening on a sweet note. “We left a bowl of Hershey’s Kisses by the door at the end of the night,” Adrienne explains. “We thanked them for a sweet night and offered them a goodnight kiss on us.”

Photographs from Ron Pradetto Photography It may have taken an emergency call for EMT Laura Leff and firefighter Adam Studebaker to meet, but they had plenty of opportunities before that. Not only did Laura and Adam unknowingly attend the same high school, they were both students at the University of Pittsburgh at the time. “The funniest part was he asked where to pick me up for our first date, and it turns out we lived down the street from each other!” Laura says. The couple got even closer, dating for two years before Adam proposed on Mt. Washington. When it came time for their ceremony at Hiland Presbyterian Church and reception at Hyehold Restaurant, the couple decided to forgo several traditional elements. “We didn’t have a bridal party because I just wanted everyone to celebrate and not have us expect something of them,” Laura explains. The couple also opted for cupcakes instead of wedding cake, a candy buffet instead of favors, and smaller bites — including a pasta station, a martini salad station, and trays of hors d’oeuvres — instead of a big dinner. “It was a big hit because it was so different!” Details in WHIRL Directory, page 118.

bravo,
Billy!
By Nicole Barley Photographs from WireImage + EPK Link Everybody say, “Yeah!” Pittsburgh performing great Billy Porter is the proud owner of a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical, an honor he earned for his simultaneously emotional and ecstatic performance in the Broadway show, Kinky Boots. Playing Lola, a drag queen in need of some sexy, supportive footwear, Porter portrays a character in search of healing — and heels. Creative and Performing Arts, and Carnegie Mellon University’s “second to none” School of Drama, helped prepare him for what one might call the role of a lifetime — so far, anyway. “ I don’t want to limit the fact that there could be other things that come as well. But, in terms of opportunity, success is when opportunity meets preparedness, and I’ve been preparing myself for this for 43 years. It’s an amazing, amazing part.” Porter’s lifelong friend Billy Hartung, executive director of Center for Theater Arts, lauds the actor’s amazing talent and devotion to his dreams. “As an artist, I have the utmost respect for his process, his standards, and his commitment to the craft
of acting, and also the roller coaster profession that is show business. In addition to his success, Billy has both wings to soar, and roots to ground him — I find that to be incredibly exciting!” says Hartung. After a 13-year hiatus from a Broadway stage, Porter’s path led him to the part, which has proven to be more than award winning — it’s also presented him with work that speaks to his heart. “I took a break from performing because my career was not going in the direction that I wanted it to go in,” he says. “I took a step back, and one of the things I realized was I wanted to do work that was meaningful, and being black and gay and Christian in America, there’s a lot to say, and there’s a lot to talk about, and I think that’s what’s special about the show. This character represents something a little bit greater than just being a drag queen. She’s a human being, and she has a story, and she has a heart. It’s great to be part of something that can simultaneously be entertaining and also have a message at the same time.” The score by Cyndi Lauper and book by Harvey Fierstein indeed present a show filled with feeling and fun — if those red, thigh-high sequins boots that play a prominent role on stage are any indication. And, check Porter’s Twitter account, @theebillyporter, to witness a photo of his between-show ritual born of wearing those very kinky kicks: soaking his feet in a giant tub of crushed ice. During our chat, just a few days fresh off his victory, I wondered how he would be celebrating. “Going to work! That’s how one celebrates in the theater,” Porter said with a laugh. “It’s very different from an Oscar. You know, the movie is in the can, so you don’t have to go to work. I still have to do eight shows a week. I’m happy to have a job, and I’m celebrating doing that!” The mark of a true performer. Bravo! Kinky Boots, kinkybootsthemusical.com.
