HOT FUN IN THE SUMMERTIME With the mercury rising, there’s no need to be stuck in a gym or yoga studio for a workout. Mix it up with these outdoor activities for an ideal way to burn calories while enjoying the fresh air, warm weather, and longer days. A big plus is they are budget-friendly activities the whole family can enjoy.

SWIMMING Looking for a low-impact workout? Swimming is a total body exercise. Our region is filled with public pools or head to the mountains to enjoy some lakeside splashing.

KAYAKING Beat the heat by heading onto the water for a good workout. Kayaking is a great upper body exercise or you can find a peaceful location for a soothing and meditative paddle.

HIKING Hit the trails for a scenic workout. To up the intensity, enjoy varying terrains and try interval training, such as running hills and power-walking the straightaways. Many parks have easy and challenging options.

OUTDOOR BOOT CAMP Skip the workout studio

BIKING If running stresses your joints, then biking is an excellent alternative for some calorie-burning cardio. All you need is a bike, a helmet, comfortable clothing, and a cool breeze at your back. Don’t have a bike? Rentals are an affordable option.

ONE WHIRL YOGA FEST & HEALTHY LIFESTYLE EXPO July 14-15, 2018 _ PHOTOGRAPHS BY ANDREW NALESNIK _ LOCATION: Point State Park HIGHLIGHTS: This year’s classes were outstanding, with offerings from beginning to advanced, from chanting to meditation, from sunrise to late afternoon. Ever mindful that the Pittsburgh yoga community is one of the strongest and largest in the nation, and as that number continues to grow with evidence of the power of the poses, teachers and their studios offered one-on-one advice to students, and even took classes themselves! Sponsoring the event for the seventh year in a row, UPMC Health Plan pointed the corporate spotlight onto the event, held at historic Point State Park.

/ REPORT Fallingwater at Twilight

FALLINGWATER’S 23RD ANNUAL

TWILIGHT TOUR F

allingwater, the house designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for Pittsburgh’s Kaufmann family and now a national historic landmark, will host its 23rd Annual Twilight Tour and Concert on Saturday, August 25. Sponsored by Huntington Bank, the Twilight Tour offers visitors a special shared experience of Fallingwater with music, dining, and conversation. The evening begins with a welcome reception including wine and hors d’oeuvres, and an exhibition featuring the Fallingwater property before the house was constructed -- when Masonic groups and Kaufmann employees camped there pre-1935! Along with a tour of the house and its Bear Run surroundings in the changing evening light, Twilight Tour attendees will have a light supper and be treated to music provided by Pittsburgh’s Etta Cox and Al Dowe Quarter, with dessert outdoors in the meadow by lantern light. “We look forward to the camaraderie, culture and history that’s celebrated at the annual Twilight Tour,” says Susie Shipley, President of Huntington Bank’s Pennsylvania and Ohio Valley Region. “Frank Lloyd Wright’s architectural masterpiece comes alive in a new way, and it’s an honor

38

38-55_Finance_MikeSpur_Matcha_FredRogers.indd 38

for Huntington to be part of such a special evening.” Space for the Twilight Tour is limited, with tickets normally selling out early at $225 each. For those unable to attend, Fallingwater is still a great destination point this summer and fall, attracting more than 175,000 visitors from around the world last year alone! Originally built as a private residence for the Edgar Kaufmann family, owner of the Pittsburgh department stores, Fallingwater is considered one of Wright’s best examples of his philosophy of organic architecture, or the harmonious union of art and nature. More than 5 million people have toured Fallingwater since it opened to the public in 1964, after having been entrusted by the Kaufmann family to the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy. “Visit Fallingwater again or for the first time, take a friend or family member who has never been there before, and uncover more of its beauty and history for yourself,” exclaims Justin Gunther, a vice president with the Conservancy and the director of Fallingwater. Twilight Tour reservations may be made online at Fallingwater.org/visit/twilight-tour or by calling Fallingwater Visitor Services from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. at 724.329.8501. WE STARTED GOING LOCAL BEFORE IT WAS TRENDY. ABOUT 150 YEARS AGO. At Huntington, we make it a point to work with those who move our community forward. As the #1 SBA lender in our region, we're proud to support local businesses and their efforts to make a difference right here in our neighborhood.

Gunther returns to Fallingwater where he was curator of buildings and collections from 2007 to 2011. Most recently, he was architectural historian at the Virginia State Capitol in Richmond, Va., serving as curator of the architectural, historical, archaeological, and landscape features of Virginia’s Capitol Square. In that role, Gunther also managed the revamping of the visitor experience of the site. Involved in historic preservation for more than 20 years, Gunther has also served as a professor and program administrator at Savannah College of Art and Design and manager of restoration at George Washington’s Mount Vernon. In his new role, Gunther will provide sustaining leadership to Fallingwater, both in its preservation and its varying programs, including supporting the visitor experience, educational programming and community partnerships.

Breathtaking

e Pittsburghers take pride in our emerald hills, valleys, and rivers. Our topography bursts with variety and unpredictability. Without art, however, we feast off Pittsburgh landscapes privately. One purpose of art is to provide the framing and perspective needed to see together. You don’t need art to rank Pittsburgh among the most beautiful cities of the world. But you do need art to make Pittsburgh’s natural beauty a public experience. Pittsburgh is fortunate to have a young digital photographer intent on sharing Pittsburgh’s beauty with locals and the world. His name is Michael Supowitz, 25, born and bred here. Michael is not your stereotypic artistic photographer. With nothing but an inexpensive pocket camera, he manages to capture breathtaking panoramas in vivid photorealism. He has an eye for selecting and framing his subjects in ways that bring out what others had not before noticed. His photos teach us about the intricate craftsmanship of beam and bolt at the base and underbelly of some of our famous suspension bridges. They let us appreciate the embroidery of the chain-links in a cyclone fence scaling a river trail. They allow us to witness a railroad track on red gravel cutting through a meadow of green foliage on a fading Pittsburgh afternoon. With one side of the meadow in deep shade and the other in bright sunlight, Supowitz invites us to explore how much dark/light green can absorb and still remain green.

Where did Supowitz do his art training? How did he develop his eye to see the unseen? Before I answer, full disclosure: I am Michael’s father. Michael’s path to art, like his art itself, was not conventional. When Michael was two-and-a-half, he was diagnosed with Pervasive Developmental Delay, a diagnosis on the Autism Spectrum. His early years were spent in silence. My wife Linda and I surrounded him with a team of dedicated specialists who taught him to speak, listen, and practice the natural rhythms of conversation. His various therapies

were long and arduous and, in the end, successful. Michael now works two jobs in which he takes great pride. He has built relationships of trust and mutual respect with his co-workers. He enjoys a rich social network of family and friends. He is especially close to his big sister, Ally, who was there for him from the beginning. But despite all the training to see and attend as others do, Michael from the start of life was seeing and attending “against the grain.” Michael’s determination to confront his challenges in life gave him a voice

in art that others are now hailing. In May & June 2018, some of Michael’s framed photographs were on display in the street front windows of the Friendship Circle in Squirrel Hill. Acclaimed artists and the public alike have praised Michael’s talent. In the near future, you will be able to visit www. michaelsupowitz.com to view and purchase limited runs of his photo prints. We hope to see you there. Michael Supowitz Photography, michaelsupowitz.com

atcha, a specially grown type of green tea, has become a modern phenomenon in the culinary world. This latest culinary fad and superfood has been appearing everywhere from health food stores, to coffee shops and bakeries. What makes it distinctly unique to the commonly known green tea, is that matcha is a finely ground powder packed with 3 times the nutrients. Normally when you drink regular green tea, the leaves get infused into the hot water and then are discarded. Brewing green tea can only extract a fraction of the benefits, which are all trapped within the tea leaves. With matcha, you’re drinking the leaves that have been finely milled, and are receiving more of the benefits.

century, tea had spread to all class levels in Japan as it had become more attainable.

The first documented evidence of tea in Japan dates to the 9th century, and was primarily used by Buddhist monks for religious rituals. During long hours of sitting, monks would drink matcha to remain alert yet calm. During the 13th century, tea had become a symbol of luxury and was only used by the wealthy. The custom of drinking tea was originally medicinal, and then extended into pleasurable reasons. By the 16th

Additionally, matcha contains a greater amount of caffeine than brewed green tea, about 35 mg of caffeine per half teaspoon. Matcha is known to increase energy, without the jitters that sometimes accompany coffee, making it a healthier substitute for your morning.

M

Matcha green tea exceeds the benefits of most known superfoods today. It is rich in natural antioxidants, zinc, vitamin C, magnesium and selenium. All together, these form a powerful anti-aging force. Those who regularly drink matcha are known to have flawless, clear skin. But underneath the smooth skin, you’ll see enhancements as well. Research from the University of Shizuoka shows that matcha can enhance brain function. The researchers found that drinking matcha daily for two months caused improvements in attention, reaction time and memory.

It contains high amount of L-theanine, an amino acid, to promote a state of relaxation and lower anxiety, thus why it is

considered a calming beverage. Matcha tea contains a unique type of antioxidant known as catechins. Notably, the catechin EGCg (epigallocatechin gallate) is known to provide cancer-fighting properties. Multiple testtube and animal studies have found that the catechin compounds in matcha may inhibit the growth of cancer cells. EGCg and other catechins found in matcha are known to counteract the effects of free radicals such as pollution, UV rays, radiation, and chemicals. Matcha is rich in fiber, chlorophyll and vitamins. It is also found to boost your metabolism and lower your cholesterol. Matcha’s increase in popularity is mainly due to it’s reported health benefits, but also because of it’s visual appeal. It’s vivid, neon green color is fun to incorporate into candy and desserts. Wherever you go, it’s easy to find matcha flavoring cakes or cookies. There is no shortage in creative uses with matcha, it has been made into ice-cream, KitKat and Pocky flavors, even stirred into lattes and cocktails. Although these modern takes on green tea can be entertaining, I wanted to find matcha used in it’s traditional form. Yuko Eguchi, a Tokyo native, practices the art of Japanese tea ceremonies in her home. She has been studying this historic art form for 25 years and is located in the North Hills of Pittsburgh. The Japanese tea ceremony is a ceremonial preparation and presentation of matcha. It is strongly inf luenced by Zen Buddhism philosophy. The basis of the ceremony is a notion of peacefulness, mindfulness and the Japanese term “ichi-go ichi-e”, which translates to “one time, one meeting”. This concept

allows the ceremony to be a treasured encounter. I contacted Yuko to experience the tea ceremony for myself. She invited me into her home and explained the ceremony before we began. The ceremony was essentially a stylized performance to bring together the host, who makes the tea, and the guest. It is done in a simple, plain room with

46

no loud decorations to distract from the most important aspect, which wasn’t necessarily the tea but the act of sharing the tea with another. I watched Yuko slowly make the tea in awe. Every movement she made during the ceremony, including the steps she took into the room, was made with purpose and respect. She began with

purifying each utensil and bowl. She poured hot water into a bowl and whisked in matcha powder in a zig-zag formation. She gently placed the bowl in front of me, and as I sipped it, I realized I had never felt so at peace drinking anything before. Such a simple act of sharing and drinking tea with another became unlike any other experience I’ve had. Since

HERE’S HOW YOU CAN USE MAKE THE PERFECT CUP AT HOME: WHAT YOU NEED: • Shallow bowl • Tea whisk (usually made of bamboo) • Sifter • Optional: Chashaku (‘teascoop’) INGREDIENTS: • 1 tsp matcha • 2 oz boiling water DIRECTIONS: 1. Sift matcha powder into the bowl to ensure no clumps. 2. Slowly add hot water. 3. Whisk the matcha and hot water briskly in a quick, back-and-forth “W”, until small bubbles form on the surface.

then I’ve treasured the unique earthiness of this tea.

WHERE TO GET MATCHA Dobra Tea House in Oakland sells high-grade matcha you can enjoy. If you’re interested in buying your matcha powder, most Asian grocery stores will sell it. In the Pittsburgh area, try 3 Rivers Tea in Fox Chapel or Seoul Mart in Oakland. Keep your eye out for

organic varieties. Yuko’s special tip for new matcha drinkers is to make sure the powder is a bright neon green. Or, if you’d like to experience matcha how it was used in ancient Japan, a Japanese tea ceremony is an incredible experience. You can contact Yuko for a ceremony on her website: yukoeguchi.com/yuko

4. Serve matcha immediately with wagashi (Japanese sweets). PRO TIP: Gently swirl the tea whisk in hot water before beginning to make matcha. This warms up the bowl and soften the bamboo tines.

he world is celebrating the 50th anniversary of “Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood” by showing as much love as possible to Fred Rogers. His gentle-eyed face is gracing a U.S. Postal Service Forever stamp, he is being played by megasuperstar Tom Hanks in the upcoming film “You Are My Friend”, and the documentary “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” is playing in theatres worldwide. In the documentary, his wife Joanne Rogers describes her husband’s last concerns before he died. “He asked, “Am I a lamb or a goat?’” She smiles, and says, “And we all knew that he meant, was he a lamb of God? And I said to him, “Oh, you

are a lamb, if ever there was a lamb, it is you.” The universal outpouring of kindness and caring is probably what would please Rogers the most. For a man who was deeply concerned about the lives of the world’s children, this shower of appreciation becomes a beautiful legacy. One of Rogers most powerful moments was in the delivery of the 2002 commencement at his alma mater, Dartmouth University. In the hopes of hearing his voice again, here is what is considered to be one of the most important commencement addresses given. And it was by an unassuming man, with a quiet demeanor, and an exuberant joy for life.

ow. What a privilege to be with you all. Since I’ve arrived here in Hanover, many people have greeted me by saying, “It’s a beautiful day in this neighborhood.” Well, indeed it is a beautiful day, but before I begin, I’d like you to know that I recognize that you, who live and work here, have had many days, particularly during these last several months, that have been far from beautiful. You’ve had a painful time, and you’ve handled it with dignity. I feel certain that the Zantop’s generous spirits inspire you. And it’s a great privilege for me to be with you all.

When I was at Dartmouth in the late 1940s, the tuition, room, and board all added up to $1,100 a year. Nobody owned a home computer, and hardly anyone had a television set. And those who did, there was a choice of three channels. I’m not sure if Jeanne Shaheen was even born yet, but very few people would have guessed that within 50 years, a woman would be governor or New Hampshire. Yes. When I was here, the first word of the alma mater was “Men. Men of Dartmouth give a rouse.” Well, now the first word is “Dear.” Some things change for the better. During my first year here, I lived right over there at 101 Middle Mass. And I had two roommates. I had a professor, over there, who did his best to scare everyone in his class, and he gave me the lowest grade that I ever had in any school anywhere. But I also had an astronomy professor, George Dimitrov, who looked for and found what was best in each of his students. When I look at the night sky, I still think of that extra special, kind man.. Our world hangs like a magnificent jewel in the vastness of space. Every one of us is a part of that jewel. A facet of that jewel. And in the perspective of infinity, our differences are infinitesimal. We are intimately related. May we never even pretend that we are not. Have you heard my favorite story that

came from the Seattle Special Olympics? Well, for the 100-yard dash, there were nine contestants, all of them so-called physically or mentally disabled. All nine of them assembled at the starting line, and at the sound of the gun, they took off. But not long afterward, one little boy stumbled and fell, and hurt his knee and began to cry. The other eight children heard him crying. They slowed down, turned around, and ran back to him. Every one of them ran back to him. One little girl with Down Syndrome bent down and kissed the boy, and said, “This’ll make it better.” The little boy got up, and he and the rest of the runners linked their arms together, and joyfully walked to the finish line. They all finished the race at the same time. And when they did, everyone in that stadium stood up, and clapped, and whistled, and cheered for a long, long time. People who were there are still telling this story with great delight. And you know why. Because deep down, we know that what matters in this life is more than winning for ourselves. What really matters is helping others win, too. Even if it means slowing down and changing our course now and then. Anicius Manlius Severinus Boethius—what a name—was the last of the great Roman philosophers, and the first of the scholastics of the Middle Ages. Fifteen hundred years ago, Boethius wrote this sentence, “O happy race of mortals, if your hearts are ruled as is the universe, by Love.” I was once invited to sit in on a master class of six young cellists from the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra. The master teacher was Yo-Yo Ma. Now, Yo-Yo is the most other-oriented genius I’ve every known. His music comes from a very deep place within his being. And during that master class, Yo-Yo gently led those young cellists into understandings about their instruments, their music, and their selves, which some of them told me later, they’d carry with them forever. I can still see the face of one young man who had just finished playing a movement of Brahms’ Cello Sonata, when Yo-Yo said, “Nobody else can make

the sound you make.” Of course, he meant that as a compliment to the young man. Nevertheless, he meant that also for everyone in the class. Nobody else can make the sound you make. Nobody else can choose to make that particular sound in that particular way. I’m very much interested in choices, and what it is, and who it is, that enable us human beings to make the choices we make all through our lives. What choices lead to ethnic cleansing? What choices lead to healing? What choices lead to the destruction of the environment, the erosion of the Sabbath, suicide bombings, or teenagers shooting teachers. What choices encourage heroism in the midst of chaos? I have a lot of framed things in my office, which people have given to me through the years. And on my walls are Greek, and Hebrew, and Russian, and Chinese. And beside my chair, is a French sentence from Saint-Exupery’s Little Prince. It reads, “L’essential est invisible pour les yeux.” What is essential is invisible to the eye. Well, what is essential about you? And who are those who have helped you become the person you are? Anyone who has ever graduated from a college, anyone who has ever been able to sustain a good work, has had at least one person, and often many, who have believed in him or her. We just don’t get to be competent human beings without a lot of different investments from others. I’d like to give you all an invisible gift. A gift of a silent minute to think about those who have helped you become who you are today. Some of them may be here right now. Some may be far away. Some, like my astronomy professor, may even be in Heaven. But wherever they are, if they’ve loved you, and encouraged you, and wanted what was best in life for you, they’re right inside your self. And I feel that you deserve quiet time, on this special occasion, to

52

devote some thought to them. So, let’s just take a minute, in honor of those that have cared about us all along the way. One silent minute. Whomever you’ve been thinking about, imagine how grateful they must be, that during your silent times, you remember how important they are to you. It’s not the honors and the prizes, and the fancy outsides of life which ultimately nourish our souls. It’s the knowing that we can be trusted. That we never have to fear the truth. That the bedrock of our lives, from which we make our choices, is very good stuff. There’s a neighborhood song that is meant for the child in each of us, and I’d like to give you the words of that song right now. “It’s you I like, it’s not the things you wear. It’s not the way you do your hair, but it’s you I like. The way you are right now, the way down deep inside you. Not the things that hide you. Not your caps and gowns, they’re just beside you. But it’s you I like. Every part of you. Your skin, your eyes, your feelings. Whether old or new, I hope that you remember, even when you’re feeling blue, that it’s you I like. It’s you, yourself, it’s you. It’s you I like.” And what that ultimately means, of course, is that you don’t ever have to do anything sensational for people to love you. When I say it’s you I like, I’m talking about that part of you that knows that life is far more than anything you can ever see, or hear, or touch. That deep part of you, that allows you to stand for those things, without which humankind cannot survive. Love that conquers hate. Peace that rises triumphant over war. And justice that proves more powerful than greed. So, in all that you do in all of your life, I wish you the strength and the grace to make those choices which will allow you and your neighbor to become the best of whoever you are. Congratulations to you all.

DOC’S ADVICE ON A MISSION TO SHARE BY CHRSTINE M TUMPSON PHOTOGRAPHS FROM DOC MENDELSON

James “Doc” Mendelson takes listening and sharing to new levels with observations made from his perch as owner of the famous “Doc’s Place” in Shadyside. A happy soul with a quick mind and a contagious laugh, Doc’s calling is connecting people. Many couples had their first meeting at the long bars of what is now “Mario’s” on Walnut Street. Doc’s book is a great read, and for those of us blessed with his friendship, sounds like he is across the table telling you everything. Everything about why relationships work, how to keep close friend ships, and best of all, life lessons on how to live a beautiful life while there’s still time to change and grow!

of stories every year, and in time I learned that the names were different, the faces were different, but the stories and their outcomes were eerily similar! In time, I created a template to each scenario, and could predict the specific stories and their outcomes. I was accurate most of the time.”

T

he Psychology of the Human Spirit has been discussed by experts since the beginning of humanity, but who are the experts? Are psychologists and psychiatrists experts? No doubt. But what about bartenders and bar owners, are they not experts as well? In “Life Lessons from the Other Side of the Bar”, James “Doc” Mendelson, former owner of the iconic Shadyside bar Doc’s Place for over a quarter century, discusses his ideas of human psyche. Doc explains that the reason he wrote this book is because he was implored to by his many clients with whom he has received and dispensed Information. Doc explains, “I have heard thousands

54

Thus, if you are seeking to learn more about yourself and/or your mate, are seeking a relationship, wanting to maintain or improve an existing relationship, or trying to recover from a broken relationship, “Life Lessons from the Other Side of the Bar” can probably help you! Doc uses analogies, humor, and other tools to help us put things into their proper perspectives. He injects rational thought into emotional situations, attempting to help us in our decision making processes. One of the greatest anomalies in life, according to Doc, is “We seek to fall in love, and then try to figure out if we like a person. Yet when we truly like a person, why don’t we allow ourselves to fall in love with that person?” That question is answered in “Life Lessons!”

“Life Lessons” discusses why so many of the most important decisions in our lives are made at improper times. How our “needs” outweigh our “wants”, and why so many decisions that we made seemed so right at the time, yet have turned out to be so wrong! In the chapter titled “The Addiction”, Doc explains how so many people misconstrue passion for love, and how even though passion and love are interrelated, they are mutually exclusive. You can love a person, yet have no passion for that person. Yet when you feel passion for a person, why do you believe you are in love with him/her? Because passion is a strong emotion…yet passion is an addiction! And we know that we have difficulty with proper decision-making when facing addictions! How, when, and why this addiction manifests itself is clearly discussed in this chapter, as is how to combat this addiction and make better decisions. Would you like to know the difference between boys and men? Is it age?...Not at all!...It’s attitude! Here is some insight: • A boy is concerned about what he wants and how he feels. • A man is concerned about what his mate wants and how she/he feels. • A boy has not yet developed his self-esteem, so he concentrates on making himself feel better about himself. • A man has healthy self-esteem, feels good about himself, and thus can use his energy to make his mate feel better about herself/ himself. • A boy is concerned about how he looks with his mate and how everybody else judges him when he is with her/him. • A man is concerned about how he feels with his mate, and doesn’t care at all about what anybody else thinks of her/him. If you have any interest in learning more about boys vs. men, “Life Lessons from the Other Side of

the Bar” might be a book that you should read. We hear all the time that “people can’t change!” Do we believe that? Doc doesn’t believe it! In the chapter titled “epiphany”, it is defined as an illuminating discovery, a revealing scene or moment; and a sudden manifestation or perception of the essential nature or meaning of something. What this chapter says is that people can change…but that YOU CAN’T CHANGE THEM! You can ask them to change, urge them to change, even threaten them…to change or else! But these practices will not work. The only thing that works is to make them WANT to change. Don’t push to change your mates, that is a losing proposition! Instead, educate them, which hopefully will make them want to change.

Doc says, “In my years as a bar owner, I have encountered thousands of stories—both as a witness and interventionist—and decided to write about them. Do any of them sound like yours?” They Should! They are all your stories! Purchase the book by mail using either PayPal, pghdocsok@aol.com, shopify, or sending a check to 1104 Grandview Avenue Unit 2, Pittsburgh, Pa. 15211 Book can also be purchased at any Bradley’s Books Book is $16 including sales tax, additional $3.00 for postage mailed.

After the sadness and pain of a breakup, what is our thought process? We cannot get over the person, or the situation. Doc believes that after every Break-up, you must remind yourself to focus on one of the most powerful four-letter words in the English Language…..NEXT! You can spend all of your time and energy festering and brooding , remembering the way things were. But when all is said and done, you’ll have two choices; first…Get over it! Second…Don’t get over it. But as you bitch and moan, fret and suffer, don’t expect anyone else to give a damn for too long.

Doc & Jenn Mendelson

Dating is solely trial and error. If one doesn’t work…try another! There are many like situations discussed in “Life Lessons from the Other Side of the Bar”, including the great confusion with actually knowing if you are selecting the proper mate. Doc, however, does tie it all together for his reader by describing how relationships are supposed to be formed, how they should evolve and prosper, and how to mix emotions with rational thought to maximize your decisionmaking process.

She wants to raise money for CF because she believes in the integrity of the Foundation and its ability to not only extend children’s lives, but also to greatly improve the quality of those suffering with this disease. JAMIE HELLESTED AND

CODY MCCLELLAND Married May 28, 2017 Jamie and Cody, who have known each other since about middle school, didn’t reconnect and begin dating until after a mutual friend’s 30th birthday party years later. “We pretty much started dating soon after,” Jamie exclaims

“I really chose a florist based off of the flower crowns that they made,”says Jamie of the floral arrangements for the big day. “I just wanted everything to look more organic and natural and not so neat and tidy, so I just chose certain colors that I liked and Pisarcik Greenhouses picked the flowers from there.”

The cake, from Pennie’s Bake Shop and Espresso Bar, featured three simple, ombré, frosted tiers with a raspberry filling.

“ Mine and Cody’s favorite memory of the day was sneaking away to the campfire Succop Nature Park has that they light after dinner, to take a moment to go make ourselves s’mores, and have the chance to sit back and watch everyone having a good time. ” — Jamie Even though the weather report showed a 100 percent chance of rain all day, the sky stayed clear until the wedding was over. “As soon as the guests were getting seated, it started to get a little dark, but as soon as I walked out from the house to the ceremony, there was a ray of sunshine just shining on the altar. It was the craziest thing,” Jamie exclaims.

Avid skiers and snowboarders, Cody proposed to Jamie on Valentine’s Day 2015 while enjoying a day on the slopes at Seven Springs Mountain Resort.

board into a reality, but I think if you just really focus on what’s most important to you and your spouse, and stay true to your personality, your wedding is going to turn into something better than you could have ever planned it to be.” — Ashley The three-tier Bella Christie & Lil Z’s Sweet Boutique Cake featured a blue ombré that faded to white. / ARE YOU IN?

WHAT MR. ROGERS MEANS TO ME WE ASKED, YOU ANSWERED! Like so many mothers who raised their children on “Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood” my own sweet Mom took her seven children to the WQED studios on Fifth Avenue to meet the man in person. I was 13, and the eldest of the “McMahon clan” as we were known then, and still are, though there are now 21 grandchildren in the tribe. The younger kids were beside themselves with joy as we parked in the little lot beside the limestone building. We clamored inside and within minutes were meeting Mr. Rogers himself. And here’s the thing I will always remember: none of us were starstruck, nervous, or the least bit self-conscious or shy. He patiently showed us around the studio cables on the floor, explained the huge television cameras, and took the tiny hands of the littlest of us who was walking. He was wearing his red sweater that day, too. That’s my favorite Fred Rogers memory. These stories are some of yours. Interact with us, connect, and let us share your stories!

My favorite memory was actually meeting Mr. Rogers! We were having brunch at the PAA (Pittsburgh Athletic Assoc) with my great grandparents and my grandmother walked us up to him. He was the kindest gentleman and very patient (seeing we interrupted his brunch!)!! It is a very fond memory! I loved watching his show as a kid and it was so special to meet him in person. In high school I want to visit the WQED studio with my mom. The staff approach me and asked if I wanted to play X the Owl as they where short a staff member. I put on the costume and played X the Owl for the kids all day on the stage where the show was filmed. One of the best days ever! Seeing the faces of the little kids meeting X was priceless. It was a dream to be able to say I “worked on the set” of Mr. Rodgers for the day!

“My name is Ronda Goetz and I had the pleasure of growing up in Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. My hometown hero brings out the best in each of us. My best memory is riding the train at Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood with my toddler niece at Idlewild Park. Seeing the world through her eyes was priceless.” Ronda Goetz
