Editor’s Note: Our holiday cover is our gift to you! We had many ideas for this cover, from babies to Santa to sports stars. But the concept of a takeaway present won out, with the idea of giving art to our readers. Calling upon our former intern, Cheney O’Neal, we gave her our ideas, along with our holiday spirit. And, when we saw her creation, we all had the same awestruck reaction. She perfectly captured what we all feel this year; that the message of hope is one for peace. We wish you a happy holiday and a world filled with peace. — Christine Tumpson

Manufacturing Here Is On Its Way Back.
Long ago, our local rivers and natural resources helped industry take root here. Soon manufacturing
became part of our very being. It made our nation strong and our workers proud.
Now a new wave of manufacturing is rejuvenating the region. That’s because the natural gas we drill
for in Southwestern Pennsylvania is an important raw material used in the making of steel, paints, fertilizers, plastics, medicine, and more.
Drilling is just the beginning.

Let There Be Peace on Earth From our very first issue to now, our mission is to showcase the positive aspects of the City of Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania. Our jobs are easy with the streak of attention focusing on the successes of this region, and why that is a lesson to be learned throughout the world. We believe it comes down to trying to do the right thing, learning from mistakes and uncontrollable events, and maintaining a positive attitude while working hard at doing the best we can. These tenants may have sounded like platitudes years ago, but today, they are recognized as the basis for sound growth in the pursuit of a healthy lifestyle and in the art of building a sound business. According to the awards received in 2013, Pittsburgh is the greatest city on the planet. Honors include top-ranked public schools; the best city for recreational activities; the No. 1 smartest city in America; the most literate with the most newspaper readers; the No. 1 ballpark; the highest homeownership rates; an up-and-coming Downtown area; one of the most romantic cities in the world; the best for starting a business as a young entrepreneur and a tech-startup; and oh yes, it has the happiest workers, too. Even we were surprised when we checked out the list of awards and recognitions earned in 2013. We want to keep track for positive motivation and are putting it all on our website. Check out Pittsburgh BEST 2013 and wait to see what comes up in Pittsburgh BEST 2014! This month’s cover says it all for everyone here at WHIRL Publishing. The cover is our holiday gift to you, with the hope of Peace on Earth. Here’s to a love-ly holiday!

get giving
Kick off “Kettle Season” with Steve Blass, former Pittsburgh Pirate and current Pirates broadcast announcer, at The Salvation Army’s Doing the Most Good Dinner this December 3 at the Sheraton Station Square Hotel! Follow Your Dreams
Fresh off his role as Little Bob in Marvin Hamlisch’s Smile, performer Jaron Frand is making Pittsburgh proud with his influence on the New York theatre scene. We chatted with the Point Park University grad about following his dreams to the Big Apple. WHIRL: How did you get started performing? Jaron Frand: I guess it all started with my dad, Dr. Jeff Frand. He’s a jazz singer, and I started singing with him and did some shows around Pittsburgh. Then, I started getting into more musical-type shows. I worked with the Pittsburgh CLO, the Abby Lee Dance Company, Pittsburgh’s Creative and Performing Arts School, and studied at Point Park University. WHIRL: When did you decide you wanted to become a professional in the arts? JF: I decided at a young age to take this professionally and seriously, even though everyone said it was really hard. I got to college, and I was like, “I’m going to make it.” WHIRL: What made you want to move to New York? JF: When I graduated, I thought, “I’ve got to move to New York and give this a shot.” It took a lot of courage. It was kind of scary, but it felt great. Even though I did all of this studying and acting, you still don’t know everything until you’ve actually experienced it. WHIRL: And how is life in the city? JF: I recently celebrated my one-year anniversary, so I’m excited about that. I cannot believe I’m still here. It doesn’t feel like I’ve accomplished a lot, but when I look back, I’m proud of what I’ve done.
High Rise Congratulations to our friends at the Fairmont for recent, monumental accolades! The hotel has been named a winner of Condé Nast Traveler’s 2013 Readers’ Choice Awards. As the only Pittsburgh hotel to make the list, Fairmont Pittsburgh earned the No. 10 spot among the Top 10 Mid-Atlantic hotels. “We are honored to be included on this prestigious list,” says General Manager Matthew Sterne. “The Readers’ Choice Awards is an important benchmark for our industry, and this reinforces the excellent service and product that we have strived to provide since Fairmont Pittsburgh opened its doors in 2010.” Nineteen North American Fairmont properties were among the prestigious, awardwinning lineup, including The Plaza, Fairmont San Francisco, Fairmont Kea Lani, Fairmont Scottsdale Princess, and Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise. Given its central location, paramount amenities, breathtaking views, and stellar service, we foresee copious wins on the horizon for the city’s first LEED Goldcertified hotel. December 2013
WHIRL: What roles are you working on now? JF: This past year, I’m trying to get involved in film and TV. It’s a similar process to doing musicals, but it has its own set of challenges. I appreciate an actor who is able to put themselves into a character. You don’t say, “Wow, what a great actor.” You say, “Wow, what an interesting character.” WHIRL: What do you miss most about Pittsburgh? JF: It’s so quiet in Pittsburgh! (Laughs). I grew up in Pittsburgh and went to school there, so I thought I’d feel like, “Goodbye! I don’t want to be back.” But it’s not that way at all. I’ve grown to have such an appreciation for Pittsburgh and what home means. WHIRL: What advice do you have for others pursuing similar dreams? JF: “If I knew then what I know now” — I totally get that phrase now. It’s really hard to learn how New York works until you’re here, especially in the theatre industry. The biggest lesson I’ve learned and could pass on is this: it’s not necessarily about the audition, but building relationships and staying connected. It’s all about making that connection, following up, following through, and staying in touch.

Tina Doose, president, Braddock Council; Bill Gatti, president, Trek Development Group; Brian Hudson, Sr., executive director, Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency; Dr. Howard Slaughter, Jr., board member, Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency; and Mike Pindell, commercial executive director, Huntington Bank, attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony for The Overlook in Braddock.
Braddock Rising Edited By Liz Petoniak “When I look at The Overlook, with its innovative and breathtaking design on a great Western Pennsylvania hillside in the community of Braddock, it serves as a beacon — an example of the very best in community revitalization,” says Mike Pindell, senior vice president and commercial executive director, Huntington Bank Western Pennsylvania and the Ohio Valley regions. The Overlook, a much-anticipated development, includes the construction of 24 apartment units consisting of eight onebedroom, eight two-bedroom, and eight three-bedroom units, along with extensive site infrastructure improvements. In 2009, the Redevelopment Authority of Allegheny County (RAAC), together with the Braddock Borough, identified The Overlook site for redevelopment with the dual focus of maximizing job creation and minimizing negative impact to the community. The RAAC selected Trek Development Group, in partnership with Rothschild Doyno Collaborative and Mistick Construction, as the development team for this project. AWK Development served as the site engineer and surveyor. Mon Valley Initiative (MVI) and the Braddock Economic Development Corporation are the nonprofit community partners involved in the project. The completion of this project represents an investment in Braddock of approximately $9.5 million. Almost 80 percent of that amount is private equity, generated through the sale of Low Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC). These tax credits, allocated by the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency, have been purchased by Huntington Bank through City Real Estate. Huntington’s Community Development Corporation purchased 50 percent of the available LIHTC tax credits, totaling an investment of more than $4 million, while Allegheny County and the US Department of Housing and Urban Development provided the additional funding and support. “Community revitalization is difficult. It takes vision, resources, knowhow, follow-through, and most importantly, will and belief. We were fortunate enough to be part of a team that possessed all of these ingredients. We benefited from an excellent partnership with Huntington Bank, Allegheny County, Braddock Borough, and MVI. This is just the beginning and we look forward with eagerness and excitement for future phases,” says William Gatti, president, Trek Development Group. Huntington Bank, huntington.com. — Kim Ravenda

giving 101 ‘Tis the season to give! By the end of December, most of us have figured out how much of our income we’re able to donate to our favorite charities. But, there’s more to doing good than simply writing a check. Bob Fragasso, founder, chairman, and CEO of Fragasso Financial Advisors, gives us an introductory course in donor education, as well as the 411 on all of our options when giving back. WHIRL: How do tax deductions for charitable donations work? Bob Fragasso: By donating, we Bob Fragasso help a social service organization or a civic nonprofit association provide benefits or services to the community that otherwise wouldn’t be provided, or would have to be provided at greater taxpayer expense. The IRS recognizes that fact and gives the donor a refund equal to the highest tax bracket applied against each dollar contributed. Meaning that if you donate a dollar and your highest income tax bracket is 25 percent, you receive a refund for 25 percent of that dollar. But, people don’t donate to charities just to receive this deduction; they still have to pay that 75 percent. So, this is the way of facilitating people’s own feelings of altruism to places where they’re emotionally invested. WHIRL: Are there any limitations on tax refunds? BF: You can only receive tax refunds on donations that account for 50 percent [or less] of your adjusted gross income each year. You can donate more than that, but the deduction will be carried over to the next year. WHIRL: How can we contribute to our favorite charities? BF: There are a range of ways. The simplest form is a cash donation. But, you can also gift an appreciated asset, like a stock or mutual fund. This is a good option for those who want to sell an appreciated asset and who also want to make a charitable contribution. You still receive a deduction for the appreciated asset’s value, without having to pay the capital gains tax of 20 percent, assuming you’ve held the stock for over one year [you would pay a higher tax for selling an appreciated asset you held for less than one year]. So, gifting appreciated securities is the smart way to lower tax incidence. The last way to contribute would be to have an attorney create a charitable trust, which is a good option for someone looking to sell a greatly appreciated stock, while also contributing to their favorite charity. For example, if you gift an appreciated stock into the trust, you can avoid the capital gains tax, receive a tax deduction, and also increase the dividends you receive from the subsequently revised portfolio. To account for children expecting an inheritance from that stock, you can write a second trust called an irrevocable life insurance trust, which provides your children and your charity money free of taxes when you die. MAKING THE COMMUNITY BETTER TAKES HARD WORK, DEDICATION, AND MORE PEOPLE LIKE YOU. At Huntington, we believe it’s important to do more for the community – whether it’s rolling up your sleeves and getting involved, or helping in other ways. That’s why we’re proud to support the Free Care Fund at Children’s Hospital and their tireless efforts to make a difference in the community.

Compassionate Caring U
nder the leadership of Rafael Sciullo, Family Hospice & Palliative Care in Mt. Lebanon grew to be the largest not-for-profit hospice in Western Pennsylvania, serving an average of 460 patients per day and 3,800 each year. Following his departure, Barbara Ivanko, the new president and CEO, continues the work of her predecessor — fulfilling Family Hospice’s mission to provide excellent care for patients with life-limiting illnesses, as well as emotional support and access to resources and education for families — while also bringing new ideas to the table. She does so with a bright, bubbly spirit.

Marketing and Public Relations Manager Greg Jena says, “Hospice is not just a job — it’s a calling. You really have to have that something special inside of you to work here.” Ivanko, a trained social worker, found her calling at hospice more than 10 years ago and quickly worked her way up. Prior to coming to Pittsburgh, she served as COO of a 1,200-patient hospice in South Florida for five years. “If I’m going to be CEO, it has to be someplace really special, someplace that I can wrap my arms around and feel a sense of purpose,” she says of her career path. “I came up here, and I fell in love. This hospice puts patients and families first, which is really important to me. And I think what sets us apart from any other hospice I’ve been in touch with is the reverence our employees have.” Ivanko’s passion is personal. Her mother, who was never told her life expectancy was limited, still had chemotherapy appointments scheduled for two days after her death. Her last words were, “I’m not ready.” Ivanko says, “In my grief, I kept thinking that there’s got to be a different way of doing this. Hospice offers another choice. You can meet the end of your life at home with your family. There’s a way to be comfortable and to explore transcendent issues, spirituality, and what really matters in life, which is love, relationships, family, and the time you get to spend with them.” Despite the heaviness of her work, Ivanko finds a way to spin it in a positive light. “It’s hard to see people feeling sad,” she says. “But on a personal level, the awareness that my work gives me that our time here is limited makes it easier to appreciate life every day. I am less likely to get annoyed over little things, like if my husband forgets to do a chore or if I get stuck traffic.” One of the most rewarding parts of her job, she explains, is the time she spends with families who are celebrating their loved ones in memorial, which many do at The Celebration of Life Wall, the permanent granite structure on-site where a loved one’s name can be engraved for a $1,000 donation to hospice. Though it can be difficult balancing what Family Hospice wants to do for patients and what the finances will allow, Ivanko is extremely thankful for the generous support of the community, which allows them to do more for patients than most hospices. Currently, Family Hospice is striving to decrease the risk of repeat hospital visits for patients, to expand the Compassionate Care Program, which provides support and education to caregivers, and to introduce the community to Isabelle, the new full-time therapy dog at Family Hospice’s inpatient center in Mt. Lebanon. Looking toward the future, she also hopes to commence weekly yoga classes as a part of the employee wellness program. Ivanko, who’s a certified yoga instructor, leads an active lifestyle with her husband, Ed, and their talking parrot, Tico, in Mt. Lebanon. They enjoy hiking in Bird Park, meditating, kayaking, scuba diving, and traveling. It’s safe to say that this Florida transplant is adjusting to life in Pittsburgh quite well. During the interview, Ivanko excitedly pointed us to her first winter coat. “The community is beautiful,” she says. “And although people are very connected to each other, it’s not closed to a newcomer like myself. I have not felt like a stranger for one second that I’ve been here. I’ve felt very welcomed and embraced. We’re just blessed to be here with Family Hospice.” Family Hospice & Palliative Care, 50 Moffet St., Mt Lebanon. 412.572.8800. familyhospice.com.
Annual Holiday Memorial Tree Campaign For a suggested donation of $25, Family Hospice will place a tag inscribed with the name of your loved one (pets are welcome, too!) around the neck of a white dove ornament that will adorn holiday trees at local malls and the administrative offices in Mt. Lebanon throughout the month of December. To participate, call Family Hospice at 412.572.8812. w h i r l m a g az i n e . c o m

What a Season!
Congratulations are due to our Pittsburgh Pirates! We’re already looking forward to opening day, March 31, 2014! Pittsburgh Pirates, pirates.com.

5 Fun Facts with Brett Keisel
I’ve always looked up to Brett Keisel. Not only in a literal sense, as the Pittsburgh Steeler towered over me during our interview, but also for his leadership on the field. “Sometimes, they refer to me as the ‘old general,’” Keisel says of his fellow defensemen. Off the field, the defensive end is the one being led — by his dogs Luka and Maximus! WHIRL: What song do you listen to to get pumped up before a game? Brett Keisel: I listen to a lot of Pearl Jam. One of my favorite songs is “Animal.” WHIRL: What’s your favorite movie? BK: I have a few favorites. My favorite comedy is “Tommy Boy.” My favorite action movie is “Braveheart.” My favorite Western is “Tombstone.”
WHIRL: What’s your favorite non-football activity? BK: Being with my family. I love taking my kids fishing or taking the family hiking. I try to stay outdoors as much as I can. WHIRL: When you do workouts on your own, what’s your go-to routine? BK: In the morning, I take my dogs for a run. It kind of motivates me in the morning; not so much me getting my workout in, but I have to run my dogs or they’ll tear my house apart. WHIRL: Do you have any hidden talents? BK: I’m trying to teach myself how to play piano. I love music, and I’ve always kind of wished I knew how to play an instrument. My fingers, I think, are too jacked up to play guitar. I figure I can tickle the ivories a little bit. Pittsburgh Steelers, steelers.com.
High School Highlight: University Update:
Bigger and Better Things
“His nickname isn’t ‘Iron Mike’ for nothing,” says Regis Becker, president of Pittsburgh Barbell Club and USA Weightlifting senior coach of Mike Nackoul. Hailing from Canonsburg, Nackoul previously won the U.S. National Junior Championships and placed seventh at the World’s Junior Championships. But the 2013 International Weightlifting Federation World Championships in Wroclaw, Poland, in October was one of his biggest competitions to date. “It was a much higher level of competition,” Nackoul says. “It was a big arena with a much bigger audience. It was cool.” Competing in the 85 kg weight class, Nackoul finished 17th in the Snatch, lifting 145 kg (319 lb), and 16th in the Clean and Jerk, lifting 182 kg (401 lb). Now, he is focusing on his graduation from Massachusetts Institute of Technology this month and his upcoming move to Colorado Springs. There, he will train for his ultimate goal: the 2016 Summer Olympics. “I think Mike’s best lifting days are ahead of him,” Becker says. “There is no telling how far he will go in weightlifting after he graduates and has time to train fulltime. The sky is the limit!” Pittsburgh Barbell Club, facebook.com/pittsburgh.barbell.

They’ve Got the POWER
After Christmas ends, there’s still one more present for local high school wrestlers to tear in to. The 2013 POWERade Christmas Wrestling Tournament invites 46 teams from across the U.S. to battle it out December 27-28. The 47th annual event will be held at Canon-McMillan High School, home of last year’s AAA Team Champions. Attracting some of the best and most established athletes in the sport, the prestigious POWERade Christmas Wrestling Tournament has been crowned the Toughest Tournament in Pa. and the Third Best Tournament in the U.S. by WrestlingReport. “Western Pennsylvania is rich with tradition, as far as wrestling goes,” says tournament director Frank Vulcano. “Wrestlers are always looking for better competition, and this tournament brings that in for our local kids.” POWERade Christmas Wrestling Tournament, poweradewrestling.com. Rant & Rave with
Colin Dunlap
We are all seeing the other side of the hill. That much seems reality; that much appears certain, even through the strongest prescription black-andgold glasses you care to find. So, get accustomed to the downhill existence from here. In the case of Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger — who will turn 32 in March — it appears his best days are behind him.
And get this: Not all of it is his fault. While Roethlisberger is a quarterback who should be smack-dab in the throes of his prime years, an obvious mistake in running off former offensive coordinator Bruce Arians after the 2011 season, coupled with a current offensive line that would have trouble blocking the Morningside Bulldogs, has forced a couple undeniable truths. First, this franchise frittered away some prime seasons with the quarterback that you can’t quickly fix. And, by the time the offense gets fixed, it will almost-certainly be too late. And, secondly, Roethlisberger — like all of us — isn’t getting any younger. Once those years are behind him and his body breaks down, there is no coming back from it. The Steelers are right in the middle of a perfect storm of transforming an elite quarterback into a guy squandering away valuable years. Know what? It is tough to watch. But probably tougher because we know the heights to which Roethlisberger can propel this band of black-and-gold brothers. When Roethlisberger retires of his own accord (or gets decapitated behind that dreadful offensive line, forcing him from football) and the documentary filmmakers and biographers come banging on Big Ben’s door, the focal point of his football story will be seasons 2007-2011. Has to be. There is no other emphasis. That half-decade span is an apex he won’t be able to match. In the regular season over that period, Roethlisberger pushed the Steelers to a 51-22 record, was 5-3 in playoff games, won a Super Bowl, and took his team to another one. It was, accurately, the Golden Age of Ben. On top of that, Roethlisberger threw for 113 regular season touchdowns in that five-year stretch, averaging out to 22.6 per season. Such a pace served to solidify his place among the finest individual performers in a team sport that this city has ever known. But, really, it should have been an appetizer of more to come. Sadly, the Golden Age of Ben is behind us. Those aforementioned factors have made the present a time we look back with such splendor and excellence, knowing in our heart of hearts he won’t be able to duplicate them. Again, much of it isn’t his fault. So, let’s all enjoy the rest of Roethlisberger’s career and what it has in store. He could lead the Steelers to a few more Super Bowls, he could be a shining beacon on an offense that sputters through the next few season, or he could be something in that vast expanse between. Who knows? But I really hope you did something from 2007-2011. I hope everyone in this town – and across Steeler Nation — understood the magnificence they were witnessing at the quarterback position during that time frame. For it was seldom seen in the franchise before then. Most certainly, it appears from my view, that high times like that won’t be realized again while Roethlisberger is the quarterback. Just imagine if his own franchise didn’t get in the way.

To Infiniti and Beyond #1 Cochran cruises into the future with the 2014 Infiniti Q50 leading the pack By Rachel Jones Photographs by Cayla Zahoran Rob Cochran
R
ob Cochran drives an Infiniti Q50. “It’s a great ride,” he says. The president and CEO of #1 Cochran is not alone, as Infiniti is the fastest growing luxury make in Pennsylvania. “Infiniti attracts the youngest audience for luxury cars, and the great thing is, the price of the car is far below what they expect,” says Cochran. “The brand has had good legs the last few years.” Those legs have recently moved the Monroeville location to a temporary showroom in the North Hills. The permanent North Hills location will open in summer 2014, helping Infiniti fit in perfectly with the continuous growth in the area. “The brand is on the upswing,” says Cochran. “We’re just ecstatic about the future of Infiniti.” My future with the 2014 Infiniti Q50 has me pretty excited, too. WHIRL Staff Photographer Cayla Zahoran, WHIRL photography intern Michael Fornataro, and I climb into the ruby ride and are met with the Infiniti InTouchTM Navigation System. The dual touch-screens display a map, SiriusXM Satellite Radio, apps, and access to multiple camera views. We can see what’s directly behind or in front of the car, as well as what’s hiding in the peripheral areas. Where was this when I was trying to parallel park for my driver’s test? “Infiniti took all of the great things from the G37 sedan and transferred them up to the Q50, like the Power Handling, all-wheel drive, and cabin and infotainment technology,” says Shawn Kukic, executive manager of Cochran Infiniti of North Hills. A smooth, quiet ride was experienced as we cruised down the busy William Penn Highway. With showrooms in the South Hills and North Hills, #1 Cochran is Western Pennsylvania’s exclusive Infiniti dealer, and the luxury brand has always ranked high in customer satisfaction. Aside from its Direct Adaptive Steering, we think the Infiniti Connection Convenience and Concierge services helped boost the ratings. For the first 48 months, Infiniti owners can rely on the Infiniti Personal AssistantTM 24/7 for anything from comparing prices on holiday gifts, to ordering a pizza. I’ll take a large pepperoni. And a 2014 Infiniti Q50. Thanks. #1 Cochran, 877.COCHRAN. cochran.com.

Hillman Cancer Center Gala

The 2013 Hillman Cancer Center Gala, “Living Courageously: A Future Without Cancer,” proved to be a tremendous success, raising $4 million! Benefiting cancer research and patient care at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute (UPCI) and UPMC CancerCenter, the evening honored the philanthropic generosity of nearly 900 of the region’s leaders, including partners, physicians, and clinicians. Held at CONSOL Energy Center, the celebration kicked off with jazz artist and Pittsburgh native Benny Benack III on the trumpet, serenading guests during the cocktail reception. Those attending enjoyed a delicious dinner, and entertainment by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Composer Robert Miller, whose work has been featured in UPMC commercials, directed the orchestra in a world premiere performance of three compositions, inspired by the stories of patients, physicians, and researchers. Presented by PNC, the annual fundraising gala was co-chaired by Christina and Carlos Cardoso, and Becky Cost Snyder; Elsie and Henry Hillman, and Cathy and Sy Holzer served as honorary co-chairs. This year, the PNC/UPCI Director’s Distinguished Scholar Award was given to Dr. Theresa L. NimickWhiteside, professor of pathology, immunology, and otolaryngology. “The gala was a wonderful celebration and recommitment for all of those who are helping to advance a future without cancer,” says Nancy E. Davidson, M.D., director of UPMC CancerCenter and UPCI. — M.D.

A sophisticated soirée, the Leading Ladies Gala was held at the Westin Convention Center Hotel for “An Evening in Paris.” More than 500 guests convened for a chic night of cocktails, dinner, entertainment, and a tremendous live auction — all to recognize the region’s leading ladies in philanthropy, business, education, and the arts. Approximately $150,000 was raised for Oakland Catholic High School! “This year’s gala was especially exciting since it coincided with the school’s 25th anniversary, which signifies a milestone in its still young, but impressive, history,” says event co-chair Colleen Totten, who served with her husband, Brad. Serving as honorary chairs were Mike and Terri Clark, and, along with the Leading Ladies host committee, Oakland Catholic High School President Katherine D. Freyvogel and Vice President of Advancement Karen Marner led the program. “As a founding board member and president for the past 16 years, I have seen our school grow into the premier all-girls Catholic high school in the region,” says Freyvogel. “I have witnessed first-hand the remarkable impact of an Oakland Catholic education through the incredible young women whose focus on spirituality, scholarship, and service allows them to excel.” Bravo! — M.D.

Fresh from The Farm Juices Grand Opening
Ankit Goyal
Fresh from The Farm Juices refreshed a hearty crowd of 100 guests during its South Side grand opening! The new storefront offered free samples of juice and fresh salads, such as Tamari Soba Noodles, Cauliflower & Peas, and Asparagus & Mixed Tomato. As those attending browsed the new space, the raw juice varieties were served and owner Ankit Goyal gave a demonstration on cold-pressing produce. Guests sampled The Works, Limey Green, Restless Red, Black & Yellow, Fortified Orange, Minty Limeade, and Spicy Lemonade. Goyal, who sources much of his produce from more than 10 local farms, cranks out 100-200 gallons of juice each day for his customers. He says he was impressed with the diverse crowd at the grand opening. “Everyone from 2 years old to 80 enjoyed themselves,” he says. “People left saying, ‘I feel so cold-pressed!’” Goyal’s juices are comprised of fresh pineapple, orange, blackberry, lavender, spinach, kale, apple, carrot, lime, cilantro, beet, lemon, ginger, parsley, broccoli, garlic, cayenne pepper, and flax. The business, housed in a historic space, also hosts events like, “Veggie-Giving,” a five-course, sit-down dinner for vegans and vegetarians, which features juice, of course, and a beneficiary. — M.D.

For the first time ever, Lexus of North Hills hosted an event that was not exclusively for Lexus customers. In addition to some A-List Lexus and Bentley clients, local business owners, members of local golf communities, and Pittsburgh Social Exchange members and subscribers gathered for an enjoyable evening of networking and admiring some hot new rides. Pittsburgh Premier Catering served up delicious hors d’oeuvres, wine, and beer, while Kenny Blake and Jimmy Sapienza played smooth tunes for the group. Kevin Mullen, vice president of Lexus of North Hills and Bentley Pittsburgh, says he was thrilled with the event’s 145 guests and how excited first-time showroom visitors were about Lexus of North Hills. “It was a great night that featured the new Bentley Flying Spur and the Lexus IS 350,” says Mullen. “Both models have received numerous accolades since their recent introductions.” He also announced that the new Bentley and Maserati store will be breaking ground in a few weeks! — R.J.

Those attending came in costume, fully prepared for a contest, games, live music, tasty treats, and an open bar. Hosted by the Western Pennsylvania/ West Virginia CCFA Chapter, the night was filled with sounds by the Terrance Vaughn Trio, a silent auction, fall-flavored goodies by Rania’s Catering, and psychic readings. The rune and crystal readers were especially fun! And, the Create-Your-OwnCandy-Apple station proved to be a choice sweet spot throughout the evening. The party raised $10,000 for CCFA’s regional chapter, supporting research and improving the quality of life of children and adults affected by these diseases. “Howl at the Moon was hosted to support our mission, and to raise dollars and awareness,” says Development Manager Katie O’Toole. “We were thrilled to introduce new individuals to our organization, and are very pleased with the outcome.” — M.K.

Brides-to-be, Lawrenceville residents, local business owners, and wedding industry professionals came together to celebrate the grand opening of glitteR & gRit! By night’s end, 130 guests attended and an impromptu dance party, enticed by the music of DJ Jarrett Tebbets, ensued. During the evening, neighbor merchant Wild Purveyors served an array of cheeses, alongside Mon Aimee Chocolat. Party-goers posed at a “cheesebox” photo booth by Hot Metal Studio and enjoyed Provision Saison beer from Hop Yard Brewing Co., and a signature cocktail made of Prosecco, lime, and ginger. Door prizes by Bella Bridesmaid, Mister Grooming & Goods, and Cioppino — just to name a few — were given away, and as part of the celebration, the shop gifted one handmade bridal gown. “We pulled the name of Jeanne Lewis, who has been married for more than 15 years!” says owner Erin Szymanski. “She immediately called upon the newly engaged Rebecca Boff. Aiding the ALA’s mission — to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease through education, advocacy, and research — the evening was held at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel & Suites Downtown. Guests, who were encouraged to don hats, enjoyed a tasty gourmet dinner, which included filet and crab cakes; complimentary, specialty drinks by Clique Vodka; and a performance by Joel Lindsey, accompanied by pianist Jerry Coleman. Emceed by WTAE-TV’s Ashlie Hardway, the gala “tipped its hat to 10 years,” and awarded Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh’s Dr. Geoffrey Kurland with the Physician of Excellence Award and St. Clair Hospital nurse Samniang Happe with the Citizen of Excellence Award. A new apparel line with local ties has arrived! WHIRL Magazine hosted its Ström Brand Shop Talk at e.b. Pepper to ring in the new denim line now sold exclusively at the Shadyside boutique. Designer and Swedish model Erika Strömqvist, creative director, and her husband Matthew Hillman Fisher, chief executive officer, were on hand to welcome shoppers and share their recent product launch. Guests enjoyed cheese, fruit, macarons, and Champagne as they perused the chic garments. “People loved the way the jeans fit and felt when trying them on,” says e.b. Pepper. “We were so happy with the event and are ecstatic to be carrying Ström Brand in Pittsburgh. We’ve already had great sales out of the gate and look forward to the continued success of the growing brand.” With showrooms in L.A. and N.Y., its Pittsburgh presence is extra special. “I was fortunate enough to have Erika hand-pick a pair for me,” says WHIRL Publishing Advertising Production Manager Stephanie Penrose. “She selected the NIO High-Rise Skinny jeans, which are high-wasted, a fashion term that was forbidden from my closet. These jeans seriously blew my mind. They fit impeccably — almost scientifically. It’s easy to see that Strömqvist and Fisher understand and love the human body. I would wear these every day if I could.” — A.B. + M.K.

Talk about girl power! Y108 held its first-ever Girls with Guitars event in the West Club Lounge at Heinz Field, bringing 1,300 people to hear five phenomenal country artists perform in a smaller setting. Kellie Pickler, Sara Evans, Danielle Bradbery, Sarah Marince, and Sheryl Crow rocked out their biggest hits! Michael Spacciapolli, vice president and director of sales at CBS Radio Pittsburgh, says the inaugural event was phenomenal. “The artists were all fantastic,” says Spacciapolli. “This was a special opportunity for Y108 to reward its tremendous, loyal listener base with a free show in a very intimate setting at Heinz Field.” The audience members won their seats through various promotions, but the event raised money throughout the night for Glimmer of Hope and young women’s breast cancer research. Breast cancer survivor and nine-time Grammy Award-winning artist Sheryl Crow enjoyed the close relationship between the artists and with the audience. “It was so much fun being a part of the talented lineup at the Girls with Guitars event in Pittsburgh,” says Crow. “It’s special to be up close and personal with the audience like that, especially when they sing all your songs back to you.” — M.K.

More than 260 guests, professional dancers, and local celebrities toted their dancing shoes to the Hilton Garden Inn — Southpointe for The Watchful Shepherd’s third annual Dancing for a Cause! The national nonprofit, based in Peters Township, exceeded its fundraising goal with more than $50,000 raised for the fight against child abuse. Funds stemmed from ticket sales, silent and Chinese auctions, dancers’ efforts, and votes, as the event is modeled after “Dancing with the Stars,” with a fundraising spin. Celebrity dancers — myself included! — were chosen, then gifted with 10 lessons at Arthur Murray Dance Studio to work with a professional instructor and master a routine. I had the pleasure of dancing the vibrant Samba with Mateo Hobbs, in a costume designed and handmade by Denielle DeSantis of Exhibit-D. Emceed by Master of Ceremonies Bracken Burns, six couples took the floor consecutively, exciting the audience in succession! Combined with funds raised, Washington County Commissioner Diana Irey Vaughan and her partner Tim Hassett took home the People’s Choice Award for their Cha-Cha. Vaughan and Danielle Andy Belusko tied for the Judge’s Choice Award after combining scores and funds raised. Judges included David and Ashley Geidel, owners of Arthur Murray, and Cami Hulin, owner of Dance By Cami. “The board and I were overwhelmed with the continued, generous community support for joining our mission,” says Executive Director Donna Nardine. “Watching the dance competition, eating delicious food, and bidding on all of the fantastic auction items made the evening an enjoyable time for all!” — A.B.

Foolproof Fête We looked to the awardwinning Common Plea Catering for holiday party pointers! Owner John Barsotti
shares with us what’s trending, and what’s on his personal menu this time of year.
WHIRL: What’s hot for serving this season? John Barsotti: We’re seeing a lot of Spanish, Portuguese, and Peruvian cuisine; oysters and Champagne; and attention to vegan and gluten-free. We’re doing a lot of long-term braised meats, like hanger steak and short ribs, as well as homemade candies, mini desserts, pies, flavored liquors, and hearty leafy items, using kale and turnips. The trend has become casual — we create a lot of small plates for cocktail receptions. WHIRL: You had us at “pie.” What are your most popular? JB: Everything. We do a lot of rhubarb, apple, raspberry, blueberry, peach, and poached pear, just to name a few. WHIRL: What are your favorite holiday traditions? JB: The biggest and longest-standing tradition in our family is The Feast of the Seven Fishes on Christmas Eve. It’s evolved each year to sometimes include 13 fishes because we enjoy it so much. Some of the fishes we prepare are lobster tail, crab cakes, broiled scallops, pasta sauce with tuna fish, cod, poached salmon, Ahi tuna, mussels, and some specific favorites, like Clams Casino and Clams Maison. Sausage Ragu, Sicilian, and Steak Neapolitan Pizzas
Yellowfin Tuna Crudo
Late-Night Bites at Vallozzi’s New to Vallozzi’s Pittsburgh is a late-night menu for the winter night owls. With menu items like a multitude of pizzas; the Vallozzi Burger, made of Pat LaFrieda beef, topped with Parmacotto ham, lettuce, tomato, white cheddar, and Dijon mustard; and Chef Josiah’s fried chicken, you can appease your cravings from 10 p.m.-midnight, Thursday through Saturday. Talking pie, Vallozzi’s is offering a Sicilian Pizza, comprised of sliced tomatoes, Romano cheese, extra-virgin olive oil, and parsley; Steak Neapolitan Pizza, finished with sliced ribeye, sautéed peppers and onions, and provolone cheese; and Sausage Ragu Pizza, constructed with fennel sausage, cherry tomato ragu, and fresh arugula. Crudo is what’s fresh on the happy hour menu, Tuesday through Friday, 5-7 p.m. According to owner Julian Vallozzi, the Italian raw fish addition has been an absolute hit. Choose from amberjack with pickled red onions and watercress; salmon with fresh-grated cucumber, toasted sesame seeds, and blood orange vinaigrette; citrus-marinated shrimp with chili peppers, tomato, and polenta chips; sea urchin with lemon extra-virgin olive oil, watercress, and potato leek purée; yellowfin tuna with honey balsamic, apple and jalapeño salad, and crispy Parmesan; and citrus-marinated scallop with extra-virgin olive oil, arugula, and crumbled gorgonzola. We’re speechless. Vallozzi’s Pittsburgh, 220 Fifth Ave., Downtown. 412.394.3400. vallozzispittsburgh.com.

Choc-Full of Chocolate
For Giovanni’s Chocolates owner Fethi Turan, it all started with a gifted box of truffles. Now, two years later, Turan has a team of employees producing chocolates sold at its Dormont location, in a kiosk at South Hills Village Mall, and online. From gingerbread truffles to salted caramels, Turan and his team outturn 3,500-4,000 chocolates a day in 32 varieties. He says he spent over a year developing the perfect recipes. “The flavors had to excel for me, personally,” says Turan. “I criticized each blend just to get better. It’s all about the temperature, the timing, the whipping — it’s all so crucial for the flavor.” Turan says each item is handmade one piece at a time — including his jars of raspberry jam — and the business specializes in custom designs, i.e. engraving names and printing photographs on the gratifying goodies. The Upper St. Clair resident has a background of 15 years in the restaurant industry, which includes his own Giovanni’s Pizza & Pasta on West Liberty Avenue. Turan says he’s pleased to have turned his leisurely love for chocolate into an occupation. “I pride myself on creating a blend that melts in your mouth and requires no work from the taste tester — just to enjoy.” Count us in, one silky confection at a time. The corner of Tenth and Penn is vacant no more! The newest venture of the AMPD Group, Ten Penny has an upscale-casual vibe with more than 100 feet of folding windows in case you’re thinking spring. Diners can opt for bar-table seating, dining tables, or custom-built booths, among rustic whitewashed brick, handsome wrought iron, and sturdy Acacia wood for a pre-theater cocktail, a satisfying dinner, or a romantic nightcap. The restaurant also features a private dining room for up to 20 guests. “When we were presented with Ten Penny’s locale, my real estate background kicked in,” says Adam DeSimone, AMPD Group’s managing partner. “I see the momentum Penn Avenue has as it’s becoming Pittsburgh’s ‘Dining Row.’” Executive Chef Scott DeLuca says the menu “will be approachable, yet interesting,” with options including osso buco over goat cheese grits and an American clam bake — all from area purveyors. Patrons can enjoy 24 craft beers on draft, domestic and imported wines, and creative cocktails. A happy hour menu is offered in addition to varied specials and a late-night menu. Ten Penny serves lunch Monday though Friday, brunch on Saturday and Sunday, and dinner seven days a week. During dinner hours, valet service is available. “The corner of Tenth and Penn is the perfect location to welcome and embrace the neighboring businesses and Downtown residents, as well as theater-goers, tourists, and conventioneers,” says General Manager Michelle LaValle-Denk. Crabapple Martini
Hot Buttered Rum
Prepared with a mix of juiced and simmered crabapples, sugar, and hibiscus flowers, Restaurant ECHO’s Crabapple Martini is light and refreshing, says Brian Hammond, owner and executive chef. The “sophisticated and seasonal” cocktail is served using Boyd and Blair vodka, and is garnished with crabapples over the rim.
Warm up with Braddock’s Pittsburgh Brasserie’s Hot Buttered Rum — a traditional cocktail with a special spin. Made with Sailor Jerry rum; hot water; English butter; brown sugar; a blend of spices, including cinnamon, nutmeg, cayenne, and clove; and salt, this drink has all the amenities to keep you toasty.
74 Win hir l D Directory, e c e m b e r 2 0page 13 Details WHIRL 126. n
Nog Mark III A Pennsylvania native, Hammond kept his homesickness at bay while living in Southern California with his conception of “Nog Nights,” a tradition that he’s continued at Restaurant ECHO. With that, came delicious variations of an eggnog cocktail. This one in particular, Nog Mark III, is a blend of egg yolks and whites; sugar; whole milk; heavy cream; “delicious, dark, sexy rum;” ground coriander seeds; an orange; orange blossom water; and “a fine dust of cinnamon.” Hammond reserves a touch of the whipped sugar and egg whites “to give it a holiday afro.” He then torches the froth, and garnishes it with cinnamon and an orange rind.
Braddock’s Revenge Executive Chef Jason Shaffer says this cool libation is ideal for escaping the chilly winter weather because of its spice. Concocted of muddled jalapeño, cilantro, and raspberries, Braddock’S Revenge is finished with Milagros tequila, Licor 43, lime juice, and a cinnamonsugar-cayenne rim.
White Chocolate Mint Martini Go green with this bold-colored brew by Walnut Grill mixologist Erica Rodriguez. The White Chocolate Mint Martini is prepared with green creme de menthe, vanilla vodka, and white creme de cacao, and poured into a glass that’s been drizzled with a creamy white chocolate sauce.
Peppermint Mocha Martini
Cranberry Smash
Champagne Wonderland
Rodriguez says she was feeling festive when she mixed up this Peppermint Mocha Martini — a drink she knew would surely put everyone in the spirit, she says. Paying homage to one of Starbucks’ most popular holiday drinks, the seasonal bar staple at Walnut Grill is made with Kahlúa, peppermint schnapps, vanilla vodka, whipped cream, and is served in a chocolatelined glass.
This spin on a classic American cocktail is done right for the holidays at Perlé, says Managing Partner Pete Landis. The Cranberry Smash is made with Nolet’s gin; Sugar De Mure, or brown sugar; muddled cranberries and rosemary; and fresh lemon juice. Landis and his bartenders shake it and strain it over an ice rock for the perfect pour. A garnish of cranberries and rosemary completes the look.
The blue-sugar rimmed Champagne flute tops off this festive Champagne Wonderland cocktail of cognac, fig sugar, simple syrup, orange bitters, and sparkling wine. A holiday special at Perlé, Landis suggests if you’re making something similar in the comforts of home, fig preserves work just as well. Cue the sounds of Elvis’ “Blue Christmas.”
Claus and Effect Cheers to this clever play on the Cosmopolitan. Monterey BaY Fish Grotto Beverage Director Nick Hayes mixes up the Claus and Effect with hibiscus flower, pomegranateinfused Absolut vodka, fresh blood oranges, SOLERNO blood orange liqueur, fresh-squeezed lime juice, and cranberry juice. “It’s not heavy, and has a comforting warmth to it for the frigid winter months,” says Hayes. The sugarcrusted rosemary sprig and cranberry garnish make for a savory stir with one twirl.

Best Foot Forward Step to it! SCHEÉ is a shoe brand with soul. The idea behind the socially minded shoes is to “walk to make a difference.” Five percent of total sales are donated to a different charity each season, and Caitlyn Hess, founder/creative director, is determined to make a difference in the community with her stylish, modern shoe designs. The Italian-made line is themed to correspond to a different beneficiary. For example, the newest collection, Sixty Five Roses, supports cystic fibrosis awareness. The Shine Bright line has us thinking pink in support of the breast cancer awareness group Bright Pink. And, be sure to check out its sister brand, Caitie Liz, offering equally chic shoes at a more attainable price point. Fond Farewell After 90 years serving Downtown Pittsburgh, Canadian Fur Company’s legacy will come to an end this January. Fourth-generation owner Keith Rosenstock will be retiring after running the family business for a successful 25 years. Although the store’s loyal customers are sure to be disappointed, there is a bright side — a “sale to end all sales” is currently taking place at the furrier. Pearls of Wisdom
Cute Couture Depression Couture is a local collection of children’s clothing created by Kathleen DeMartino, and the line draws its name from the Great Depression, when thrifty, creative mothers re-imagined hand-me-downs and feed sacks into beautiful pieces of clothing. The inspired, modern-day pieces retain that creative quality, and the adorable outfits are made right here in Pittsburgh from 100-percent recycled materials and textiles. The selection is limited as the designer hand cuts and makes each piece. DeMartino’s line is sold in a number of local boutiques, including The Picket Fence in Shadyside, Rosebud’s of Aspinwall, SoMe in Glenshaw, and Lullabye Landing in the South Hills. Depression Couture, depressioncouture.com.
There are few things more classic and classy than a set of pearls. But for those looking for a modern twist on the sophisticated staple, take a look at the Tsarina line, now available at Spoiled Chics the Boutique. “We’re so excited to be offering our interpretation of the 1920s and revival pieces, aka ‘Gatsby-era’ inspired jewelry,” say the store’s co-owners, Cora DeLoia and Carina Perrone. Make a statement with multi-strand necklaces, chokers, dangly earrings, headbands, and long strands, suitable for knotting and roping. Don any of these pieces, and do your best Daisy Buchanan impression. Spoiled Chics the Boutique, 350 Beaver St., Sewickley. 412.741.0977. spoiledchics.com.
Beautiful! Elizabeth models the handcrafted clothing line.
Less is More Want that designer look for less — and contribute to a good cause while you’re at it? Priced at $435, it’s high fashion for far less. Another new item? This cozy sweater-coat by Amalialad, discounted from $385 to $110. Best of all, proceeds go toward Bethlehem Haven, which works with the community to provide a continuum of care for homeless women that leads toward selfsufficiency. There are so many reasons why we reach for black when dressing for a big event. It’s easy to accessorize, sophisticated, sleek, and this month’s roundup shows the many different ways to work it. Our inspiration includes a coordinated couple (Dr. Lisa Cibik and Bernie Kabosky), a leather-trimmed frock, and a chic take on black and gold. You see? The simple shade is the key to dressing for success!

Creative Spark By Nicole Barley Photographs by Cayla Zahoran
City and country. Cosmopolitan and rustic. Industry and nature. These opposite ideas are what inspire Renee Piatt — not only as they relate to her personal style, but also, to her expression of self. By day, you may see her sporting a tribal cardigan, leggings, and distressed boots. By night, a ball gown worthy of any best-dressed list. “I have a bit of a split personality when it comes to fashion, and I run the gamut. I used to fight against my inconsistencies, but now I realize that is my style,” she says. But, no matter the occasion, “I just choose pieces that best reflect my individuality and creativity, whatever makes me feel most comfortable in my own skin. Being true to myself and feeling polished makes me feel confident.” The alwaysfabulously dressed mom of two and Doncaster stylist can now add jewelry designer to her list of accomplishments. The name of Piatt’s line, Wanderluxe Designs, is pulled from her love of “stones and beads, like geodes, agate, druzy, shell, quartz, crystal, and semi-precious stones, adornments that look like or literally came from the earth, ocean or sky; elements that reflect nature but feel rich and elegant. One-ofa-kind components you might serendipitously find wandering about the earth, traveling, following that desire to see new places, experience new things.” There’s that dichotomy again. It’s a push-pull, a mixture of earth and sky, that brings Piatt’s stylish world to new heights.

Renee Piatt, photographed at Piatt Place. She wears pieces from her new jewelry line, Wanderluxe Designs, along with clothing by Lucky Brand, Theyskens’ Theory, Joe’s Jeans, and Bed|Stü for Free People. Piatt also designed the flower arrangements featured on these pages.
Piatt hopes to bring a feeling of inspiring and empowering women to her brand. These are a few of our favorite pieces: a citrine quartz point pendant, and eggplant purple agate and amethyst druzy drop earrings. Both are available in gold or silver.
What inspires your jewelry design? “I find that I am most inspired when I have a very clear head. Music, art, nature, travel, anything that pulls me back to center helps open my mind for ideas on design. Sometimes, just sitting in silence, closing my eyes, and quieting everything works, too. Recently, over the past few months, I have had a tidal wave of inspiration, synchronicity, clarity, peace, balance, and for lack of a better word, magic, come out of nowhere, and I got back into art. I started working with flowers, sewing, got back into photography, traveled a lot, created more simplicity with my children, and it all has lead up to this drive to create. I haven’t felt more confidently ‘me’ in a very long time.”
What inspires your fashion sense? “Art and music completely inspire my fashion sense. I love intricate patterns that make a woman stand out, fine fabrics that wrap you in comfort, and unique pieces that showcase individuality. I love boho looks, maxi dresses for casual summers, rustic warm knits for fall, darks for winter, and smart, polished, suited looks for spring. Whatever is on the docket for the day, I want to feel confidently artistic, elegant, and uniquely me.”
Experience Comfortable Elegance
Favorite Designers: “Missoni, Emilio Pucci, Free People, Doncaster, Elie Saab, Marchesa, Isabel Marant, Jenny Packham, Fendi, Dior, and I have really been impressed with the work of Christian Siriano lately. His cuts, fabric, execution, and the detail, pattern, movement, and lines he creates are absolute works of art. Gorgeous work.”
724-260-5376 3328 Washington Road, McMurray, PA 15317
Wardrobe Essentials: “Great accessories. Beautiful scarves and high-end handbags that allow form and function, and jewelry that invokes my love of nature, music, art, and travel can make any outfit ‘me.’ By incorporating focal points, especially with statements pieces, you can create just about any look, dress pieces up or down, and be uniquely you with great jewelry alone.” Wanderluxe Designs, wanderluxedesigns.com. Shop the line on Etsy, etsy.com/shop/wanderluxedesigns, and find more information on Facebook, too! Doncaster, doncaster.com/1086243.

FRESHLY
POLISHED
We’ve gathered the season’s hottest shades and the healthiest tips, hands down By Nicole Barley
A
manicure is a fashion accessory. You do everything with your hands, they’re a part of your persona, and a nice looking mani-pedi can be part of your fashion statement,” says Kristen Peckich, president of La Pomponnée Salon & Spa. Peckich’s statement nails our sentiments exactly. Our fingernails are another medium of self-expression — and an easily changeable one at that. Take the following advice, gathered from three local nail technicians, to get your nails in tip-top shape. Speaking of shape, stiletto nails are the hot trend, spotted on stars like Miley Cyrus and Rihanna. Long and pointy, but filed with a round tip, this style of manicure makes a statement, says Taylor Rebisa, hairstylist and nail technician with Posh Salon. Or, if you’re looking to keep it simple when shaping nails, “don’t file the sides too short, as that can lead to hangnails,” she says. Though the interest in extreme nail art that was hot last year has cooled, the “highlighter” nail is here to stay. Typically, the ring finger is accented with a different color or design, such as chevron stripes or ombré shading. Of course, we all want to know the trick to making our manicures last. Start by “finding a good manicurist!” says Shawn Barchis, senior stylist with Sognatore Salon. An expertly applied manicure is the basis, but after that, all of our nail experts agree: moisturizing is key. “During the winter, coming in and out of cold reduces the moisture level in your nails, and they can become dehydrated,” says Rebisa. Remedy that by applying a cuticle oil or cream every morning and night before bed. To keep your manicure chip-free, Barchis also recommends wearing gloves while doing dishes. Wearing gloves or mittens when outdoors is a must this time of year as well. And, when it comes to cuticles, never cut live skin. The healthiest way to maintain cuticles is to gently push them back with a wooden orange stick. “

CHANEL’s Le Vernis Nail Colour in “Black Satin” is one of our go-to shades for chic nails. It was featured in the fashion house’s 2014 Spring/ Summer Ready-To-Wear show.
For those looking for other long-lasting polish solutions, CND’s VINYLUX polish system is new to La Pomponnée Salon & Spa. Similar in finish to gel or shellac nails, the quick two-step process promises week-long wear. If your nails are weak, or you find that other polishes leave behind stains, Peckich and the salon’s head nail technician, Laura Hayes, are fans of Zoya Professional Nail Lacquer’s “super gentle” formaldehyde-free, vegan-friendly polish. Though the finish is softer, Zoya polishes “are a really good alternative,” says Peckich. Color-wise, “black nails are back,” she says. Barchis and Rebisa concur that jewel tones, oxblood red, navy blue, and shades of grape are what’s filling their polish racks, too. Of course, we can’t resist a glittery mani during the holiday season (as you can see from some of our favorite shades on the opposite page!). Keeping in touch with the latest nail polish shades and techniques is more than a fashion statement, though.“The best thing you can do to keep nails healthy and maintain the integrity of your nails is to get manicures and pedicures regularly,” says Barchis, who recommends scheduling a manicure every two weeks. Let’s not forget to talk toes. Barchis recommends a pedicure “once a month during sandal season and every other month in the winter.” Right now, we suggest you take a look down at your hands. Steelers Nation: Black & Gold Style Fashion Show Nearly 50 Pittsburgh Steelers graced the catwalk before 650 guests at Heinz Field for the annual Steelers Style Fashion Show! The show, presented by American Eagle Outfitters, Nike, and UPMC/UPMC Health Plan, and “Taste of the Steelers,” held prior, raised more than $600,000 for the UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion Program and the Cancer Caring Center! Co-chaired by Greta and Art Rooney II, and Kiya and Mike Tomlin, the night kicked off with a Style Lounge in the East Club Lounge, Terrible ‘Tail vodka drinks, and prizes — one highlight was a Michael Kors $5,000 New York Shopping Experience. Runway fashions included designs by Kiya Tomlin, Nordstrom, American Eagle, Nike, Larrimor’s, Moda Pittsburgh, Michael Kors, Robert Graham, and Tuxedo Junction, and were worn by honorary co-captains wide receiver Antonio Brown and linebacker Lawrence Timmons — just to name a few. “Our players and their families have been generously giving their time and talents for these two wonderful Pittsburgh charities,” says Greta Rooney. “Most importantly, this event is to thank our fans who have a great sense of style, whether they’re at Heinz Field or invading another team’s stadium.” — A.B.

The Salvation Army’s Garbage Bag Gala
hair ~ nails ~ skin care ~ massage ~ waxing ~ makeup ~ bridal services ~ body treatments
You’ve dreamed of this day your whole life...
Local celebrities returned in trash-inspired garb for this year’s Garbage Bag Gala! Held at Fairmont Pittsburgh, the 12th annual event invited models to turn average household garbage bags into couture designs, raising $20,000 for The Salvation Army’s East Liberty Family Caring Center! Walking in the fashion show were Flick and Kelly from 100.7 Star, WHIRL Magazine’s Jack and Christine Tumpson, and Joy and Dwayne Woodruff. Best Garbage Bag Couture went to Edie, the Fairmont Canine Ambassador, and General Manager Matthew Sterne. True Runner and Carol Luckner designed their winning outfits. More than 120 guests enjoyed hors d’oeuvres and desserts while admiring the fashions on the catwalk. Fabulous silent auction packages were awarded to the highest bidders, and contestants in the “Waste Basket Winners” took home gift cards to area hot spots. Those taking part included SoMe, Larrimor’s, Chemistry, Lana Neumeyer, Studio Raw, Ambiance, Tapestry and Tassels, Pavement, Philip Pelusi, and Luxe Home & Design. “One of the most poignant moments was when a few heartfelt words were spoken by a former Family Caring Center resident about how she and her family found themselves homeless and were so thankful for shelter and the encouragement that helped them find jobs and get back on their feet,” says co-chair Michele Bender. — M.D.

59th Diamond
Horseshoe Ball At the 59th Annual Diamond Horseshoe Ball, 300 guests gathered to ring in the Pittsburgh Opera’s 75th season in serious style! A decadent invitation, designed by Create Studio, invited supporters to the historic Omni William Penn Hotel, the location of the inaugural ball in 1954. Bill Chisnell Productions designed the décor at the elaborate event, highlighted by performances by resident artists, live and silent auctions, and dancing to the sounds of “In The Mood.” Best of all, $240,000 was raised to benefit the Pittsburgh Opera! The auction included Joden World Resources’ “Pageant of Diamonds,” which featured a diamond tiara, antique pieces, and fine jewelry designed by Carlo Giuliano. Chairs Electra and Jim Agras, and co-chairs Susan and Nicholas Loutsion, were assisted by the planning committee, comprised of Gabriela and David Porges; and Nancy and John Traina. Auction chairs Sandie and Bob Brand, and co-chairs Roseanne and Mark Wholey also contributed to the fantastic fête. “Many opera companies open their seasons with majestic celebrations, but only we have a tradition as long and as storied as the Diamond Horseshoe Ball,” says outgoing Special Events Manager Sam Badger. “It was a shimmering and glittering evening of merriment and entertainment.” — M.K.

Walnut Grill Bridgeville Grand Opening
THE•SPECIALTY•STORE
Walnut Grill celebrated the addition of its newest location in Bridgeville with 200 guests at a pre-opening gathering! The event welcomed restaurant supporters, local business owners, and Collier Township area residents and personnel. As the fourth and largest location, the Bridgeville restaurant joins existing locations in Mt. Lebanon, Wexford, and Fox Chapel. With approximately 7,300 square feet of interior space, and a new 3,000-squarefoot outdoor patio, guests can warm up by the outdoor fire pit, enjoy a drink at the patio bar, watch sports games on multiple high-definition TVs, or hang out with friends at the spacious bar areas. “Each time we open a new location, we’ve been able to use guest influence to improve upon the casual, friendly formula that’s been working so well for us,” says Kirk Vogel, president of Walnut Grill restaurants. In fact, Vogel and his partners are interested in continued expansion. They are looking to add restaurants in Cranberry, Robinson, the Monroeville/Murrysville area, and finalizing a deal in a major Midwest market. “Walnut Grill wants to thank all of our guests, supporters, vendors, and Collier Township personnel that assisted in the opening of our fourth location,” says Vogel. — M.D.

Glimmer of Hope’s Bid for Hope Gala Football greats Heath Miller and Alan Faneca, and their wives Katie and Julie, returned to host Glimmer of Hope’s 12th annual Bid for Hope Gala. More than 240 guests gathered at Restaurant ECHO in Cranberry, raising more than $100,000 for Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC and Magee-Womens Research Institute! This year’s gala tipped the scales, bringing in $1 million to date in support of the development of clinical research to patient services for young women with breast cancer. KDKA-TV’s Bob Pompeani also returned as emcee and auctioneer, and 24 Pittsburgh Steelers, including Ben Roethlisberger, Shaun Suisham, and Brett Keisel were in attendance. “We’re so grateful for the Steelers’ support,” says Glimmer of Hope founder Diana Napper. “And, the event was a tremendous success!” A packed auction of Steelers paraphernalia, including Miller’s Game 1 cleats, which he laced with pink shoelaces, kicked off the evening. ECHO received rave reviews for its crab cakes, pork filet, and beef tenderloin hors d’oeuvres, and singer Nick Marzock provided the entertainment, as guests enjoyed ECHO’s “unbelievable desserts.” “Glimmer of Hope’s generosity is allowing us to find ways to improve and lengthen the lives of young women fighting this often aggressive form of breast cancer,” says Kandace P. McGuire, M.D., director of Premenopausal Breast Cancer Services at Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC. — M.K.

Located in The UPMC Mercy Trauma & Burn Center, the room will be a calming place where the youngest burn patients can retreat to appealing activities, games, and toys, all therapeutic in nature. A VIP reception, hosted by Beverly and Dane Wukich, M.D., preceded the gala, chaired by Beverly and Judy Woffington. The evening included live music by Gary Racan and the studio-e band, dancing, and a silent auction and boutique showcasing jewelry, crafted puppets, and fashionable purses by Mary Frances. The chairs were joined by LHAS President Carole Kamin and Andrew Peitzman, M.D., chief of general surgery and UPMC Trauma Services, and honorary chair. A presentation of awards included the recognition of Doctor of Distinction to Thomas Starzl, M.D., Ph.D.; the Visionary Legacy Award to the late Charles F. A DECADE OF DIY
Prints, posters, and artwork by strawberryluna at Handmade Arcade.
This year’s Handmade Arcade will celebrate a decade of DIY love! The 10th annual event will take place on December 7, 11 a.m.-7 p.m., at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center. Handmade Arcade is Pittsburgh’s first and largest independent craft fair, bringing together 150-plus innovative crafters (the most ever!), DIY experts, and designers with an expected 8,000 shoppers. Not only do we enjoy shopping for our homes and for holiday gifts, we also love the support and opportunities it provides local artists and creatives. This year’s event will also include a new, hands-on area with drop-in, short, and day-long interactive programs, such as craft demonstrations, mini-tutorials, make-and-take activities, craft competitions, and art installations. Artists will also be on hand to speak about their wares and interact with the public, with the goal of bringing together consumers and creators. As always, admission is free. But, if you want to get in on the action before the crowds arrive, purchase an Early Birdie pass, and you can shop the sale for an hour prior to doors opening to the public. HONOR ROLL This year’s Young Architects Studio Competition, presented by AIA Pittsburgh, challenged architects to design an “urban and architectural opportunity” along the portion of The Great Allegheny Passage that runs through Pittsburgh. Astorino architect Drew Weinheimer, RA, was recognized with the Honor Award for his submission, “Light Trail.” The imaginative design “creates a path in which the trailside vegetation itself becomes a luminaire that reacts to the speed, proximity, and orientation of trail users, making them more aware of their place and interaction with nature.” The jury lauded the piece as innovative, compelling, and effective. Congrats are due to Weinheimer, now a two-time winner of this award! AIA Pittsburgh, aiapgh.org. Astorino, astorino.com.

SPLURGE A LITTLE All we want for Christmas is ... everything from this Fox Chapel shop By Michelle Dickson | Photographs from Splurge
W
ith more than 20 years in the home furnishings industry, it is no surprise that Kym Pelcher, founder and president of Splurge, has created a shop unlike any other in our area. Pelcher spent 10 years as a furniture, lighting, and home accessory senior buyer for the prestigious company Fortunoff in New York and has traveled the world, buying from international markets. “Traveling around the world gave me the knowledge of what luxury, value-driven goods are about and exposed me to different factory capabilities and quality checks,” says Pelcher. With hefty product development and retail merchandising experience, Pelcher expanded her interior design business, Kymberly Pelcher Interiors, which specializes in residential and commercial design. Her ultimate dream was to put all of her expertise from retail and wholesale, and interior design, into a store concept. Thus, Splurge was born. At Splurge in Fox Chapel, shoppers will find value-driven luxury goods consisting of timeless, updated classics; reproductions; and a splash of Hollywood glamour, presented in a sophisticated, lifestyle setting. “We carry unique items that can’t be found in big box stores,” she says. “You become a student of the way people live and what they gravitate toward. We are fanatical about staying on top of current style trends, which we scour the market for.” Splurge sells luxury candles, hostess gifts, jewelry, handbags, scarves, and offers a bridal and gift registry. The shop’s items are “uniquely displayed,” says Pelcher. In addition to home décor accents, accessories, and holiday décor, design and free personal shopping services are also available to customers. With a photo of a mantel, table, or room, consultants will pull together items for customers, specific to their space, adding that finishing touch. Special order bedding, rugs, and window treatments are offered as well. With the personal shopping service, shoppers can browse or call, and choose personal or corporate gifts from housewarming to wedding. The personal shoppers are available 24/7, and say they’ll open the store early and stay late for last-minute emergencies. Splurge also ships worldwide, and the final, finishing touches are in the packaging. “People love giving and receiving a beautifully wrapped gift,” says Pelcher. Pelcher prides herself on providing her clients with an unforgettable customer experience, which has resulted in returning customers wanting to splurge for their home. @ Splurge, 1112 Freeport Road, Fox Chapel. 412.252.2242. splurge-shop.com.

In the renovated Point Breeze home of Wendy Bell, there is not a space that hasn’t been carefully considered — all in the name of family Upon entering the home of WTAE-TV Evening Anchor Wendy Bell, I experience a breeze of happiness. She greets me with open arms and her eminent smile at the entryway of a spotless mudroom painted orange — her favorite color. We pass stacked stone columns and enter into the kitchen, where she mixes me up a fresh lemon water and herself a coffee from an in-cabinet, single-cup maker. She and her husband Joe, an interventional cardiologist, have spent the past 10 years completing house projects, including a 1,200-square-foot addition. “It’s all for the boys,” she says of her proudest accomplishments, sons Michael, 13; Jack, 12; Ryan, 8; and Bobby and Christopher, 5-year-old twins. Bell describes her dwellings as “contemporary rustic.” “I get my girlish fix with these Swarovski pendants,” she says of the kitchen fixtures above the granite island. “I like to mix steel, glass, wood, and stone.” The kitchen and dining room seating spaces are situated exactly for five and seven, and are the usual morning and evening go-to spots. “I wake up around 6:30 a.m. and spend 30 minutes getting the house ready before I wake the kids,” says Bell. “The lights are low, candles are lit, the fireplace is on, and breakfast is cooking. It’s a quiet, peaceful, welcoming place to wake up to and get them going before they start a long day away from me.” In the kitchen, a mosaic backsplash and patterned floor of hardwood and black onyx inlay are complemented by stainless steel appliances, white cabinets, and gray and white countertops. The cohesiveness of composition is emulated throughout the home with the use of pops of color — deep reds, purples, oranges, greens, and yellows — glossy white trim, textured wallpapers, the children’s framed artwork, and round mirrors. Outside lie a few patio spaces; a large, level yard; perennials; and greenery, as gardening is one of Bell’s choice hobbies. With Frick Park nearly a block away, trees surround the property, and Bell says it’s usual to

see deer and peregrine falcons. Built in 1980, the home is a lucid reflection of the family’s values and a space that’s evolved since they first called it home in 2004. “I wanted it to be comfortable and fun for the boys,” says Bell. “Their friends are always here, and we always have extra people around.” “I always say, I do what I like, so I can be with the people I love,” says Bell of her long-standing career in TV. It’s evident, through details, Bell’s philosophy holds true from family, to lifestyle and design. “Bright colors and organized spaces make me happy, and I want more than anything for my six men to be happy. Our home is fun and warm, and a loving place for the seven of us to count our blessings.” @
Bell commissioned sculptor Susan Wagner, responsible for the bronze statue of Roberto Clemente at PNC Park, to create this 5x7, three-panel piece of orange poppies, her favorite color and flower as a result of her childhood in Calabasas, Calif. A Restoration Hardware dining table of natural wood and black leather chairs — adjacent to large windows — give the room an airy, contemporary feel. “I wanted to pair something a little rustic with something really vibrant,” says Bell.

1. Anchormen — A “crash pad” for the children, this former bedroom-turnedplayroom is filled with underwater-themed décor, star-textured wallpaper, a mounted flatscreen TV, sports memorabilia, and a swinging door with a portal window. Opposite the lime green exit is a museum-esque hallway of the boys’ framed and lit artwork, and a trophy curio. 2. C ool Cabinetry — “Wine and beer are a very big thing over here,” laughs Bell. “It was the pillar of the addition.” The cabinets were designed with wine and beer coolers — essential for entertaining — and cookbook nooks. Opposite of the dining table (page 108), lies a full bar and lofty storage space for the children’s belongings, books, and homework. 3. Poppies! Poppies! — Bell’s intrinsic adoration for poppies is sprinkled throughout — in multiple paintings, in the living room’s area rug design, as well as on the front door panels. “Red Star Ironworks in Millvale created the design for me,” says Bell. “Not only does the wrought iron provide safety, it takes a boring, old door and makes it interesting.” 4. Connecting Spaces — The mudroom at the front of the home is all about function, bright color, and natural lighting. “Everyone has a place for their own stuff,” says Bell. “I love this space — each child has a drawer for shoes and for sports equipment.” The area is open, sans ceiling, with an upstairs breezeway, outside of the boys’ rooms, for a view of the window seat below. 5. Brighter Than Sunshine — Cozy nights by the fire are a preferred activity in the living room. From ceiling to hearth, the stone fireplace, flanked by beautiful, dark cherry built-ins, houses Bell’s Emmy Awards. On the shelves, lie books, photos, and additional, well-deserved Emmys. 6. Convenient Cleaning — With five boys, laundering convenience is essential. As part of the addition, Bell and her husband installed a second-floor laundry room. This space and the kitchen are tied for Bell’s favorite room in the house. The cranberry-colored appliances, and festive fish-themed wallpaper correlate with the color palette used throughout the second floor, and have made it easy for Bell to start to teach her boys how to do laundry, she says. In a space like this, it’s fun, right?

Leanne Ford Shaffer, one half of the dynamic design house ACRE Goods + Services, offers her sage advice on home remodeling and interior design “If you feel good in your space, it pushes out to everywhere else. The stylist and her husband, Brad, formed the creative company ACRE Goods + Services. Leanne shares those wise words with me as she rides in a taxi to a current project, the Todd Snyder + Champion City Gym pop-up store in New York City. In addition to designing the shop, which has caught the attention of pubs like The New York Times and GQ Magazine, the Shaffers have also been working closer to home on the interior of a client’s Victorianera house and a restaurant space in Regent Square. Leanne and Brad have lived everywhere from Nashville, Tenn., to Bangkok, Thailand, but it wasn’t until they returned to their home city of Pittsburgh that everything came together. Three months after they married, the newlyweds bought an old schoolhouse in Sewickley and gutted it completely. A book that Leanne’s father used to read, Acres of Diamonds, which warns against the folly of ignoring the treasure that lies in our own backyards, inspired the company name — and, it seems, the couple’s ambitious home project. The DIY renovation took more
than two years. In the end, the pair seamlessly meshed antique with contemporary to create a distinctly “of-the-moment” Americana aesthetic that garnered the attention of Country Living Magazine. Leanne attributes the success of the project to “understanding the space and how to bring the best out of it.” How can we emulate the Shaffers’ style in our own renovations? Leanne offers a few suggestions. First off, leave the plumbing and electric work to the professionals; know that finishing your bedroom first will allow you to retreat from the mayhem just by shutting the door; and, always remember that high-sheen paints, especially in white, can bring a modern feel to any room. For those more focused on re-decorating, she points out that simply rearranging the furniture that you already have can make a space feel entirely new. “Just don’t be afraid. The fear of failure inhibits creativity in all pursuits. So, you can’t be afraid to mess up or rearrange again,” she says. “Honestly, when you see something that stands out to you in a catalogue or magazine, it’s because they’ve done something to ‘break the rules.’ The things we find interesting are the things that we would be normally nervous to do ourselves.” With that, we say, get inspired, go forth, and have no fear! @ ACRE Goods + Services, acrecreative.com.

“I love to use books in decorating because they add a ton of personality and say a lot about their owners,” says Leanne.
If caring for live plants is not your forte, dried hydrangeas like these can be a pretty, lowmaintenance way to bring nature into your home.
Leanne and Brad found this skull for $6 in Bedford Springs. They gave it a fresh coat of paint to restore it to its natural beauty.

HOME SWEET HOME 1. Use Edison light bulbs to create a “fire-lit” ambiance. “We bought the 1800s European leather chairs at one of the most famous flea markets in Brimfield, Mass. We took a trailer there and filled it up,” says Leanne. 2. Leanne and Brad purchased these versatile Woodard Sculptura chairs, which can be used for both indoor and outdoor seating, at one of their favorite places to shop — Tri State Antiques in Canonsburg. “The kitchen table is made out of wood from an old bowling alley. It was a wedding gift from friends and served as the communion table and the DJ table at our wedding!” says Leanne. 3. We love the combination of the antique wooden wine rack (from Enjoy Co. in Granville, Ohio) and the Goodwill dresser with the shiny metal of the tea set (from Garden Style Living in Peters Township) and lamp. In this instance,
“The reason I use cowhide a lot is because it doesn’t really have a defined shape and it can handle a lot of wear and tear. It never stains, and it’s super easy to clean. You can find nice ones at IKEA,” says Leanne.

Adding wood planks can create texture and refresh a wall or old fireplace.
“Even if you don’t end up writing on them, I like using chalkboard paint to give walls a matte look,” says Leanne.
The Dark Side
Leanne conquered the challenge of fixing up her brother’s rental apartment above his store, Decade Clothing Boutique in South Side, without spending too much money. The coffee table and light fixture were handed down from their grandparents’ house, and the wire cage-back chair was found at a flea market in Ohio. The tufted black leather sofa (available for purchase on ACRE’s website) adds a luxe touch.
“The key to picking out creams is to veer towards those with tan or gray undertones, not yellow,” says Leanne.
To keep white sofas and chairs clean, cover them with blankets and large pillows that are easy to toss in the wash or affordable to replace.
Crown Jewel
“Sabika Jewelry was our first actual interior design client, and they trusted us enough to go with it!” she says. Brad and Leanne worked with the builders to create the clean, yet quirky aesthetic (like concrete floors polished down to shine!) for the local, multi-million dollar jewelry company’s new office. On the back wall, an arrangement of photos of ladies in antique frames pays homage to the company’s motto, “By women, for women.” Photographs from Christina Shields, Catherine Stuckhard, Alexandra Ribar for Andrew Buda Photography.
Mix MASTER
Leanne and Brad mastered the art of mixing neutral colors and breaking the rules for this family home. “It doesn’t have to be one thing or the other (with mixing colors). You can mix silver and gold, black and brown, and different shades of cream,” she says. whirlmagazine.com

SHINE ON By RACHEL JONES
This season is all about the shine. With bright tinsel, gold coins, and fun confetti, it’s hard not to get distracted. “A little shimmer will add a touch of glamour to any room, and tends to balance out the colors and add just the right ‘pop’ of shine that might be missing,” says Kym Pelcher, owner of Splurge. Plus, we love the clean, modern feel that sleek metallics shades give our homes. Can’t decide between gold and silver? Choose both together! Pelcher says the combination creates a sharp look that is very trendy right now. @ Details in the WHIRL Directory, page 126.

10...9...8... 7...6...5... 4...3...2...
Standing with our friends on New Year’s Eve — with our good luck tradition of pork and sauerkraut on standby — we’ll all be staring at the living room clock. Anxiously watching the countdown to midnight, each tick takes us closer to 2014. With everyone’s eyes on our time keeper, we want to display a piece they will want to admire. Something chic and classic, but just as fun as the party. Luckily, we’re just in time to pick up Ruben van Boxtel and Reinier Buijs’ creation, Pictogram, at The Mattress Factory Art Museum Shop. The Netherlands-based duo also designed Pictograms with opposite colorings, and one with a white face and a rainbow of colored notches. All three have the same heavy-duty steel frame that is surprisingly lightweight. “I’m attracted to this clock because it is both playful and sophisticated,” says Sam Ditch, manager of The Mattress Factory Art Museum Shop. “The rounded edges are fun, but the clock is clean and modern at the same time. I’m reminded of early black-andwhite animation.” This clock would fit right in on Mickey Mouse’s steamboat. But we think it will look better hanging in our homes.
Yes, this clock is definitely the

The Princess of Fitness By Rachel JoneS When I ask Christine Bullock what her title is, the Pittsburgh native just laughs. I think “juggler” would be most appropriate for the fitness and nutrition expert, who is also a fitness model, TV host, public speaker, Pilates instructor, and holder of dozens of other fitness and nutrition certifications. Starting in the world of athletics at age 3, Bullock danced her way through several studios, including the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre. She retired her ballet shoes during her time at Chatham University and decided to fill her fitness void with yoga. Bullock quickly upgraded from student to instructor at Amazing Yoga, shortly after earning her certification. “I loved teaching and finding a new form of fitness that was as challenging as dance, and as opening to the body and freeing to the mind,” she says. After graduation, the fireball moved to the sunny health hub of Los Angeles, continuing to earn certificates in Pilates, barre, group fitness, and more. She also starred in workout videos with Equinox Sports Club, who recommended she reach out to Dragonfly Productions. The company was looking to launch a new workout DVD, so Bullock pounced on the opportunity to further expand her résumé. The casting crew instantly approved of 10 Minute Solutions: Butt Lift. “They liked my moves,” Bullock says of her audition. “I’m a girl, so I love butt and thigh exercises; that was a piece of cake.” The DVD combines her training in Pilates, yoga, and barre to help viewers sculpt lean muscles. Unlike other thigh and glutes workouts that focus solely on squats and lunges, Bullock also works the planes of motion and fires up smaller muscles to enhance stability and strength. And the best part? Each workout is only 10 minutes! “This is the perfect video for anyone, whether you have a little time or you want a long, intense workout,” Bullock says. “You can do one 10-minute video or a full 60 minutes of videos.” 10 Minute Solutions: Butt Lift is challenging enough for the pros, but Bullock offers moderations to help viewers of different fitness levels work at their ideal pace. The five glutes, thigh, and lower back videos are: “Butt Lift,” “Upright Booty,” “Cardio Booty Camp,” “Butt & Thighs,” and “HIIT (High Intensity) Butt Lift.” Plus, Bullock added an “Amazing Abs” video. The bonus pays attention to the love handles and lower abs, but all of the workouts completely engage the core. Separately, or together, these videos redefine the behind and torch calories in a unique and customizable way. “If you love high intensity and cardio, that’s there. If you love yoga or Pilates, that’s there. Even regular squats — it’s all there for you.” Christine Bullock, christinebullock.com.

“My advice is to find something you love. People end up going to the gym or going on a run, and they’re not happy. Fitness is there to better you, de-stress you, and help release your mind. Try yoga or paddleboard or snowboard — anything you enjoy. And don’t forget to switch it up. If you do the same workouts all the time, your body will plateau after awhile. For example, if you run every day, you’re going to stop seeing results. Change up your routine, and it will restart your metabolism.” — Christine Bullock, fitness and nutrition expert, and fitness model

rystal Gaudino, a speech therapist, met Jesse Kier, a teacher working in the same school district, when an insistent co-worker quite literally pushed her into his classroom. Lucky for these two, the slightly awkward introduction turned into something beautiful. After nearly two years together, Jesse surprised Krystal with a proposal, followed by a family celebration and dinner at Kaya, the restaurant where they shared their first date. At the party, “Jesse brought a WHIRL Wedding Guide over to the table, and we started our planning right there!” says Krystal. The couple said “I do” at Saint John the Baptist Church in Monaca — the same church and grade school that Krystal attended as a little girl. “Our favorite memory from the wedding day was stepping onto the party bus with our wedding party. Jesse stocked it with pumpkin beer and made a playlist with all of our favorite songs. It was amazing to be married and doing something so fun and special to us!” says the bride. The celebration continued at the reception of 200 guests held at the Sheraton Pittsburgh Airport Hotel, where dancing lasted until midnight. For their one-year anniversary, the lovebirds plan to relive their honeymoon with another Caribbean vacation and to spend quality time pampering their six-month-old Goldendoodle. The bride placed a crystal “K,” which she found on Etsy, in her bouquet of ivory roses from Patti’s Petals.

Lauren Grous + David Garraux Photographs from Elizabeth Vincent Photography Lauren Grous’ mother first met David Garraux aboard a train leaving Philadelphia. And, after chatting him up, she knew that he was the right man for her daughter. Lauren and David hit it off at lunch a few days later, proving that mothers really do know best! The pair went on to date for a year and a half, leading up to David’s proposal at the Mt. Washington overlook. For the wedding, Lauren says, “We wanted something really classic and traditional. Something timeless.” Heinz Memorial Chapel and The Duquesne Club fit the bill perfectly. They celebrated their union with 150 close friends and family, a live band, and an elegant wedding cake with blood orange filling from Bethel Bakery. “After everyone left, we had a moment alone and went back out on the dance floor,” says Lauren. “It was nice to relive all the amazing things that happened that day, like Cityscape performing a live cover of ‘Tupelo Honey,’ by Van Morrison for our first dance.” Details in WHIRL Directory, page 126.

Sweet, Sweet
Memories
Athena Sarris Simms, Sophia Sarris Heon, Athena Sarris, Jamie Sarris, and Candace Sarris
By RACHEL JONES Photographs by Cayla Zahoran Growing up in Washington, Pa., Sarris Candies has played a delicious role in some of my greatest memories. From sharing the Odd Couple sundae with my boyfriend, to nibbling away at a Peanut Butter Meltaway Egg at Easter, Sarris has always been there. As I swap stories with Athena Sarris and her granddaughter, Athena Sarris Simms, they both smile. “That’s so heartwarming,” says Athena Sarris Simms. “That’s exactly what my grandfather (the late Frank Sarris) worked so hard for when he opened Sarris Candies.” Working as a fork lift operator, Frank would make deliveries for his candymaking friend on the side. Intrigued by his friend’s sweet paycheck, Frank considered a career change. “Well, he was either going to make candy or be a barber,” explains his wife, Athena Sarris. “Thank God he picked candy!” We’re all thankful the book-taught chocolatier found the perfect recipe for smooth, rich chocolate. A candy that can slow down time with one bite. A candy that, since 1963, has been a favorite for thousands of locals, including Pittsburgh Steelers chairman Dan Rooney. As I stand in the Canonsburg confectionery, wrapped in the warm, intoxicating smell of chocolate, I’m taken aback — just as I was on my first trip — by the explosion of goodies packed in the shop. The old-fashioned ice cream parlor, complete with crystal chandeliers and retro red booths; the display case of delicate, specialty chocolates; the racks of uniquely shaped and individually wrapped chocolate cut-outs; the zoo of plush, stuffed animals; the 1,500-pound chocolate castle, complete with working carousel; the life-sized reindeer pulling Santa’s sleigh — no wonder Frank bought the houses next door to the original shop to stretch the space into a full city block! But the sweetest treat at Sarris Candies is nostalgia. “That’s what we strive to do,” says Athena Sarris Simms. “We want to be a part of your family, and we’re proud to be part of your memories. We love having an impact on something so special.” Sarris Candies, 511 Adams Ave., Canonsburg. 724.745.4042. sarriscandies.com. WHIRL: What’s your favorite Sarris Candies memory? Athena Sarris: “Every night, Frank would close up and bring me a sundae. Vanilla ice cream with butterscotch sauce. My favorite is vanilla because you can put anything on it, and it’s still good.” Athena Sarris Simms: “When my grandparents lived above the shop, and my sister and I would come visit, we would sneak down in the dark and make these gigantic sundaes with six scoops of different ice creams, all the toppings we wanted, and tons of whipped cream. I know they knew we were doing it. But it felt so sneaky because it was closed!”
