Christine & Jack Tumpson
Wheel Love People in Pittsburgh love their cars. We drive from neighborhoods into the city and throughout the suburbs, to the T-stop and the bicycle trails. We drive by ourselves, and with family and friends. And every time we step into a car, we rely on the expertise of our local automobile dealerships to keep our vehicles top of the line, and most importantly, safe. After all, there are people we love riding in our cars. With the annual Pittsburgh International Auto Show opening on February 14, we’re taking a look at local dealerships, with a focus on what is unique about each of them. We also got the scoop on their newest favorite cars to check out, beginning on page 54. Rob Cochran of #1 Cochran owns the largest car dealership in the area, and has been listening to his customers when they questioned the negotiating process inherent in most sales. Cochran spent years coming up with a modern business model that simplifies the process. Find out how he is changing the sales concept on page 52. Our annual Couples Who Make A Difference feature is extra special this year, with couples who stand out in the business and philanthropic worlds. Spending time with them was fun for all of us, and gave us an opportunity to see why their own personal connections shine in community endeavors. bigburrito.com

Divine Dance
Translated from Chinese, “Shen Yun” means “divine beauty.” Not coincidentally, Shen Yun is also the name of the world’s premier classical Chinese dance and music company, founded in New York seven years ago. Lucky for us, the company will bring its all-new show to Pittsburgh’s Benedum Center for Performing Arts February 19-20! Discover the glory and beauty of traditional Chinese culture as you feast your eyes on magnificent costumes and brilliant choreography that combines acrobatics, gymnastics, and storytelling, along with
mesmerizing and original live orchestral compositions. The show takes the audience riding with Mongolians across vast grasslands one moment and climbing up the Himalayas or drumming on an ancient battlefield the next. Principal dancer Miranda Zhou-Galati says, “I think the most unique aspect of a Shen Yun performance is that it has a very strong message of hope, which is something that really touches the audience’s hearts.” For tickets, visit shenyun.com/pittsburgh or call the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust at 412.456.6666.

The Art of Burton Morris exhibit with colorful, vibrant décor across all six floors of the History Center, with each set to feature live entertainment and local vendors. “There’s really something for everyone,” says event co-chair Megan Chicone Boxx. “The live music brings in a cool atmosphere. You can get peace and quiet while you take in the art, and you can also dance and have fun on the top floor!” Tickets include three drink vouchers, appetizers and desserts, and the chance to win raffle and auction items. Art, Right Here
For its 90th anniversary, the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards’ Art. Write. Now. exhibit returns to the place where the competition first began — Pittsburgh! Starting February 5 and running through March 2, the tour of art and literary works from the winners of the 2013 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards finds a home at the Andy Warhol Museum. The exhibit will showcase 130 pieces across 28 different categories ranging from fiction and photography, to comics and video game design, created by seventh through 12th grade students. In anticipation of the exhibition’s arrival, we chatted with Executive Director of Alliance for Young Artists & Writers Virginia McEnerney to get the scoop on the prestigious competition. WHIRL: What can we expect from the Art. Write. Now. exhibition? Virginia McEnerney: It will surprise you! We try to present the work in a polished way, complete with frames, audio tours, and artist statements. The work itself is really accomplished, fresh, and delightful. People find the show interesting and fun, especially when they can see that the artist is a 16-yearold from Omaha, Neb. They can’t believe it’s the work of the teenagers! WHIRL: Describe the selection process. VM: Some 230,000 submissions are blindly judged on the regional level first and then on the national level. Around 60,000 students

En Pointe for Parkinson’s
Bodiography Contemporary Ballet brings us another unique, beautiful, and powerful experience with its newest production, Left Leg, Right Brain (The Frank Ferraro Story), February 21-22 at the Byham Theater. The mixed-media performance, which Founding Artistic Director Maria Caruso calls “raw, gritty, and bluesy,” features an original score, along with video feeds to capture new perspectives of the dancers as they aim to bring awareness to Parkinson’s disease by detailing Frank Ferraro’s story of an artist overcoming the disorder. “The narrative of overcoming adversity is authentically relatable and gives the audience a feeling of hope,” says Caruso. “The Bodiography experience highlights the connectivity between the arts organizations and the community. We’re real people, so that’s why we create real themes and make a real difference.” The work will support the Parkinson’s community on both the local and national level. Guests will have the opportunity for a meet-and-greet after the show at the Renaissance Hotel and to attend the community celebration following the Saturday performance. For tickets, call the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust at 412.456.6666. Bodiography Contemporary Ballet, bodiographycbc.com.
win regional awards and only about 1,600 will win national awards, some of which will be displayed in the exhibit. WHIRL: Many notable creatives won a Scholastic Award in their teens. Any names we would recognize? VM: Famous past winners include Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath, Zac Posen, Richard Avedon, Frances Farmer, Robert Redford, and Lena Dunham. We meet so many people who say that winning the award changed their lives. Teenagers need validation, especially those attending art schools, and even if you have a famous artist in your family, it’s hard to know if you really have what it takes. For many, it’s a platform that improves their chances of getting into the right high school, college, or even graduate program. WHIRL: What does it mean for this exhibition to come to Pittsburgh where the competition began? VM: We’re really happy to be bringing the exhibition to Pittsburgh since it played such a crucial role in getting the competition started. The city seems to really be embracing its identity as an art city. That became clear from the conversations I had with the people I’ve met, so we’re especially excited to bring it here. It’s really come full circle. For more information, visit artandwriting.org.

BOTH WORLDS As part of Pittsburgh Public Theater’s 2014 Masterpiece Season, the contemporary theater will bring Stephen Sondheim’s Tony Award-winning musical comedy, Company, to the stage, January 23-February 23. The show centers around Bobby, a single man whose friends are all married. Cranberry native and Carnegie Mellon University grad Jim Stanek says the role is a dream come true, and being able to come home to perform makes it that much sweeter. WHIRL: What do you like best about your role as Bobby? Jim Stanek: It’s a dream role for me. I’ve always wanted to play Bobby, and this is the right time in my life for me to play him. The thing that I love about Bobby is he’s me before I got married. He has all of these married friends who he loves, and they love him, and they have a great time together. But they’re very different. He’s trying to decide if that’s what he wants in life. WHIRL: Why do you think the audience will love the show? JS: Bobby is at a crossroads, which we all can relate to. Plus, the characters are all people we can identify with. And what I love about Stephen Sondheim’s shows is they are filled with fun and funny references to the lives we lead. At the same time, they end up being very poignant and thoughtful. WHIRL: Are you excited to be back home? JS: I cannot tell you how happy I am to be coming back home. I’ve lived in New York for 20 years, and I love it. I’m able to make a living as an actor, do exciting projects, and work with great people. But, home is where I’m happiest. I owe a lot to the people of Pittsburgh who believed in me and supported me. Now, I get to come back and perform for my family and the people of Pittsburgh.
Dancing Queens Here we go again! The hit musical MAMMA MIA! is bringing its hilarious and high-stepping numbers to Heinz Hall from February 11-16. Set to the soundtrack of ABBA, the fabulous show is the story of Sophie, a girl who is getting married and wants her father to walk her down the aisle. The only problem? Neither Sophie — nor her mother — know who he is! The women and their friends must take a trip down memory lane before the bride can confidently say, “I do!” Check out the PNC Broadway Across America — Pittsburgh’s season special, and have the time of your life! WHIRL: What do you love most about Pittsburgh? JS: It’s the perfect mixture of people. Obviously, you have die-hard sports fans. But what amazes me is that they love the arts almost equally. I’ve traveled to a lot of cities in my years, and Pittsburgh is very different. I stay in New York for my career, although moving back is always a thought for my wife and I. But to have my career in New York and have the opportunity to come back to perform in Pittsburgh is indescribable. It’s like having the best of both worlds. The Grammy-winning artist hasn’t played in Pittsburgh since April 2008, but he will be bringing down the house at CONSOL Energy Center on February 21. With hits like “The Longest Time,” “Uptown Girl,” and “Just the Way You Are,” Joel is one of the most popular artists in the world, having sold more than 150 million albums across the world. When he was recognized at the 36th Annual Kennedy Center Honors in December for his influence on American culture, Tony Bennett said, “Billy Joel is so much more than a piano man. A
distinct trend emerged when I asked the leaders of a number of local nonprofit organizations to comment on prominent Pittsburgh couple Arthur Rooney II, president and co-owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers, and Greta K. Rooney. “Kind” was the most popularly used word, followed by the phrases “down to earth” and “effortlessly gracious.” Those who are familiar with the couple know that they are creating their own legacy as all-star philanthropists, representing our city and setting an example for giving back. Truly, Art and Greta epitomize the quintessential Pittsburgh couple — highly involved in the community and its charities, and also, extremely humble. “Greta and Art are the ultimate power couple, except they are too modest to acknowledge that term. Pittsburgh is really lucky to have them, and I know I speak for other nonprofits when I say that,” says Rebecca Whitlinger, executive director of the Cancer Caring Center. “They’re just genuine. For them, giving back is second nature; they don’t think about it, they just do it in exceptionally meaningful ways.”

Greta, in particular, shines in the event chair role. She has chaired the annual Steelers Style Fashion Show, which benefits the Cancer Caring Center and the UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion Center, for many years, with the Rooney’s support of the Cancer Caring Center totaling more than 10 years. Whitlinger credits Greta with elevating the fashion show into an event comparable to a Broadway production. She says, “Her vision is incredible, and she transformed the Steelers Fashion Show into a can’t-miss event because of her direction.” Other notable chair positions include the Arthur J. Rooney Sr. Courage House Luncheon, benefiting the Holy Family Institute, and the Great Night Gala, which celebrated the 30th anniversary of Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh. Art has served on the Children’s Museum board since 1997. On Art’s service to the board, Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh Executive Director Jane Werner says, “Art is one of those board members that I can always count on. He’s there for us.” In addition to the museum’s 30th anniversary gala, the couple hosted the 20th and 25th anniversaries as well, and Werner hopes they’ll host the 35th. “They are just terrific and so down to earth. We’ve had great conversations about growing up in Pittsburgh on the North Side. They really are the quintessential couple — committed to their family, to Pittsburgh, and the museum. Their children are now grown, and they still remain involved. I really admire them.” Art also serves on the boards of United Way (where he previously served as chairman of the board for five years), Pittsburgh Public Theater, the Extra Mile Education Foundation, and the Senator John Heinz History Center. To add to the honors the couple has earned over the years, on April 12, Art will be honored at the annual JDRF Rainbow Gala. JDRF Board of Directors Member Mary Beth Allegretti says, “We are thrilled to have Arthur J. Rooney II as the honoree of the 22nd Annual JDRF Rainbow Gala. This year’s goal is $1.6 million, and his support will help us reach that goal. Art’s willingness to be honored in this way means so much to this chapter and to all those living with type 1 diabetes.” Gracious and modest, Greta says, “We are fortunate to live in one of the most generous communities in the country. People here care about the health and well-being of their neighbors and the less fortunate. It is important that we follow the example of those who set the standard here for community involvement.” Pittsburgh Steelers, pittsburghsteelers.com. ore than 65,000 people will visit the Pittsburgh International Auto Show at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center February 14-17. Car buyers in our area have numerous choices and, if predictions hold true, a large number of consumers will take advantage of them in 2014. Huntington Bank’s Economic Index recently revealed that 20 percent of Western Pennsylvania consumers plan to buy or lease a vehicle this year, which is good news for the Pittsburgh region’s auto dealers and for the local economy. The Greater Pittsburgh Auto Dealers Association (GPADA) places the economic impact of the local automobile market at more than $1 billion from employment alone — which doesn’t include the half-billion dollars in taxes the industry generates or the $120 million pumped into the local economy from advertising. “For our part, Huntington is committed to a path of continuous improvement, just as we’ve been committed to the auto finance business for more than 60 consecutive years,” says Bruce Coleman, vice president of auto finance at Huntington. “Today, 70 percent of our indirect credit decisions are administered in three seconds or less, and 95 percent of our auto loan contracts are processed the same day.” Huntington enters 2014 as the top-performing domestic bank-based auto finance company in the country, as designated by dealerships surveyed by Auto Finance Advisors. “While we take a lot of satisfaction in serving the auto industry, the Pittsburgh region is also our home,” says Susie Shipley, president of Huntington’s Pittsburgh & Ohio Valley Region. “We’ve worked hard to give back to the community through our philanthropic activities and to do the right things for our customers.” The GPADA and its members give back to our community in many ways, too. The evening before the auto show opens, their foundation holds The Red CARpet Charity Preview Gala, which benefits The Mario Lemieux Foundation’s Austin’s Playroom Project, as well as 15 additional charities. Real Expansion Congratulations are in order for Howard Hanna Real Estate Services, which has expanded into Virginia and North Carolina as a result of an acquisition of William E. Wood and Associates, Realtors, and its subsidiaries. This now makes 167 offices and more than 5,700 agents and employees across eight states for the nation’s fourth largest real estate company, which began with one Pittsburgh office in 1957. Both private companies, Howard Hanna and William E. Wood and Associates, Realtors, share humble beginnings, as well as a passion for giving back to the community. Combined, the companies sold more than 53,000 homes in 2013 with more than $10 billion in closed sales volume. CEO Howard W. “Hoddy” Hanna, III says, “William E. Wood is a great, established company, known for its quality and integrity. They are a market leader and align well with our growth strategy. They are a great fit with Howard Hanna, and there is a great future of success for everyone in the company. We are confident that together we will do great things.” Howard Hanna Real Estate Services, howardhanna.com. Photographs from Huntington Bank, by Cayla Zahoran.

Chef Kevin Sousa at a Braddock Youth Project training class at the community bread oven
Growing Braddock With successful restaurants Salt of the Earth, Union Pig and Chicken, and Station Street Food under his belt, Pittsburgh Chef Kevin Sousa sets his sights on a new venture in Braddock. Through kickstarter.com, Sousa successfully raised more than $300,000 (nearly $60,000 more than his goal and the largest amount ever raised on the site for a restaurant opening) to fund Superior Motors, a “community restaurant and farm ecosystem,” located in a building which once housed a car dealership of the same name and now houses Braddock Mayor John Fetterman and his family. Fetterman is renting the bottom floor of the building to Sousa for free with the hope that the farm-totable restaurant will contribute to the revitalization of the rustbelt borough. The top floor of the space is also home to a greenhouse. Their hope is for Superior Motors to play an integral part in a community “ecosystem” that includes the Braddock Apiary, Braddock Farms, Braddock Hostel, and UnSmoke Systems Artspace, along with a job-training program within the restaurant that’s being supported by a $40,000 grant from The Heinz Endowments. We’re betting that the space will be packed with happy — and full — diners come its tentative opening date in February 2015! Kevin Sousa, sousapgh.com. Kevin Sousa will premiere the Superior Motors menu at Edible Allegheny Magazine’s Lift Your Spirits event on February 12, 6-8:30 p.m. at James Gallery. Team Pittsburgh
As we stay glued to the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics this month, keep an eye out for three USA ice hockey players representing Pittsburgh. In the net for the women’s ice hockey team is Robert Morris grad Brianne McLaughlin. (Editor’s Note: The Colonials’ ice hockey team was ranked No. 6 in the country at time of press!) The men’s ice hockey team, jokingly nicknamed “Team Pittsburgh,” will include Pittsburgh Penguins Executive Vice President and General Manager Ray Shero; Head Coach Dan Bylsma; Assistant Coach Tony Granato; Video Coordinator Andy Saucier; defenseman Paul Martin; and defenseman Brooks Orpik. “There is a great deal of pride in representing the city and our team as part of Team USA,” Bylsma says.
PROMINENT Professionals
WHIRL: What was your first reaction to being named to Team USA?
different feel. It strikes a different chord, a different emotion.
Brianne McLaughlin: Honestly, I was relieved. When I made the [Vancouver Winter Olympics] team in 2010, I was still in school. I had no idea what the older girls had gone through the years leading up to it. Now I know the whole process. To finally make it meant that I could relax for a second and prepare even harder for what’s to come. I couldn’t be more excited for the opportunity we have in front of us.
WHIRL: Is it nice having some Penguins on the team with you?
WHIRL: How do the Olympics compare to other games?
Paul Martin
Dan Bylsma
Brooks Orpik: It’s always fun when you have some familiar faces around you for that. It’s a little different having coaches or players, but teammates that you’re friends with is always a lot of fun. WHIRL: What are you most looking forward to at the Olympics?
Paul Martin: I’m most looking forward to putting on the red, white, and blue Dan Bylsma: The coaching aspect is sweater and bringing home a gold the same. But the magnitude, coaching medal. Also, having some of the fine for your country — it’s a completely Russian cuisine that Geno talks about. Robert Morris University, rmu.edu. Pittsburgh Penguins, penguins.nhl.com.

Wumi Agunbiade picked up a basketball at age 2 and hasn’t set it down since. “I really love the game,” says the Duquesne University forward. “There are challenges you have to face, but you have the power to dictate the outcome.” The ambitious athlete worked hard at her game, attracting recruiters when she hit eighth grade. The Pickering, Ontario, native personally connected with the Dukes, who sent consistent, hand-written letters. When Agunbiade visited the school, she instantly meshed with the team’s family dynamic. Now, in her senior year, she’s moved up to one of the heads of the household, hoping to lead the team to an Atlantic 10 Conference Championship. “I’ve accepted my role as one of the main leaders on the team,” Agunbiade says. “I feel like my teammates trust me, and I’m able to lead them on the most appropriate path.” The sharp shooter is definitely one to follow, having been named to 2012’s Atlantic 10 Second-Team All-Conference and 2013’s Atlantic 10 First-Team All-Conference. She was also chosen as the 2011 Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year. As the psychology major prepares for life after graduation, basketball will not be left out. “I plan to play professionally,” she says. “If I get the opportunity to get in the WNBA, I’m going to seize it.” Duquesne University, goduquesne.com. “Hockey is a different sport,” says Kellen Carleton. “I think it’s really a fun game. I love the competition. I love the camaraderie with my teammates.” He also loves using hockey to help others. The Central Catholic High School senior was nominated to Hines Ward’s Positive Athlete Pittsburgh program this year for his work helping disabled children enjoy ice skating through the creative use of sleds. As a nominee, Carleton had a spot on “The Hines Ward Show,” where he discussed his charity work and time on the Vikings’ varsity ice hockey team. “It was really a great experience,” he says. “Hines Ward is such an amazing person and embodies that organization so well.” Carleton is now eligible to win a college scholarship, which will come in handy when he starts at Carnegie Mellon University next fall. The school was an easy choice, as it’s where his parents met and where his brother plays on the club ice hockey team now. And Carleton can’t wait to join him. “It’s a great school,” Carleton says. “The college process is stressful, but it’s been a good year. Now that things have settled down, I’m just having fun playing hockey with my friends.” Central Catholic High School, centralcatholichs.com.
Rant & Rave with
By Andrew Fillipponi Although a good talk show host wouldn’t want to admit it, we all have topics to get us through a slow-moving sports day. Should Hines Ward make the Pro Football Hall of Fame? Is Bob Nutting a good owner? Can the Penguins win a Stanley Cup with Marc-Andre Fleury? All guarantee to get phones to ring when you’re feeling at your laziest. Last month, I had to cross one of those age-old sports questions off my list: Do you like the BCS? Yes, college football will finally get the playoff it deserves next year. The BCS died in January. The new system works like this: Four teams will be selected by a 13-person committee. The committee is made up of former coaches, commissioners, and even a politician (Condoleezza Rice), giving it a unique blend of viewpoints. On a rotating basis, six bowls — Rose, Fiesta, Sugar, Orange, Chick-Fil-A, and Cotton — will host the semifinal games. The championship game will change cities annually. Next year’s title game will be held in Jerry Jones’ lavish Cowboys Stadium. Those are the nuts and bolts of the new college football post-season. It beats the old way. It gives more teams a chance to earn a title on the field. So, what’s left to complain about? Well, as it turns out, a lot. College football should adopt the system used by its brother, Division I-AA. Go to a full-scale tournament with 24 teams. Include all 10 conference winners and invite 14 at-large schools. That’s the system used in the FCS. It’s the most fair. It gives David a sling shot. In the last few years, schools like Boise State, TCU, and Utah have gone undefeated. This would give them a chance, albeit a small one, to win a title. A 24-team bracket would likely include every one- and two-loss team from the power conferences. Those are teams who have proven capable of winning a title. LSU won a championship with two losses in 2007. What made them better than the other dozen two-loss BCS teams? More votes in the AP and Coaches polls. I also don’t trust the selection committee. You’ll have 13 people of varying college football backgrounds subject to politicking and full of bias. Who says they get the four teams right? I generally think people aren’t smart. More people means more chances to screw it up. Use a computer. Have people far smarter than old football coaches and athletic directors devise a math formula to rank teams. From that formula, pick the highest ranking 14 teams who didn’t win their conference. Do that, and college football will be on its way to crowning a true national champion. A talk show host hates to lose a controversial subject. The BCS was certainly that. Thankfully, this new college football playoff won’t deliver. I’ll have the phone lines jammed again next January. I’ve got my pen and paper out ready to add another question to my sports talk for dummies list: Do you like the college football playoff? Genius.

Guests donned their finest threads for the 6th Annual Diamond Gala honoring PGA golf professional Bob Ford, who flew in from Florida to be present. Held at Lexus of North Hills, its sponsor, the evening raised $38,000 for the Cribs for Kids® Infant Safe Sleep Initiative, with the help of 150 attendees! “This is my third year involved in this wonderful charity, and every year, it is better attended and raises more money for the cause,” says Kevin Mullen, vice president and general manager of Lexus of North Hills. Decadent hors d’oeuvres and complimentary beverages were served as guests indulged in an array of special features, including a silent auction, music, dancing, and the Brooks Diamonds marketplace! “One of the night’s highlights was the Brooks Diamonds Champagne and Diamonds Raffle,” says Cribs for Kids® Director of PR and Development Heather Glaser. “At the end of the evening, winning numbers were drawn and three lucky guests won diamond jewelry worth over $4,500!” As the “Diamond Jewel Award” was presented to Ford, a video tribute of moments from his professional career was shown. “Judy Bannon and Heather Glaser have a passion that is contagious when they discuss Cribs for Kids,” says Mullen. “And, I want to especially thank Bob Ford for flying in.” — A.B.

Perfect Match Party
Susan Dunhoff, Lori Czekaj
Singles in the city “faced off” to support the Mario Lemieux Foundation at Blue Line Grille! The Modern Matchmaker and WHIRL Magazine hosted 75 guests, who raised nearly $10,000 in just a few hours. As those attending mingled, hors d’oeuvres, including chorizo and wild mushroom quesadilla bites; grilled cheese bites; and buffalo chicken bites were passed around. Singles scored with outstanding silent and Chinese auctions, which featured a seven-day trip to the Dominican Republic — purchased by the Scumacci family for $4,200. “Mario Lemieux Foundation Director of Marketing Drew Parrish was present, and was thrilled with the turnout and all of the amazing auction items that were donated,” says Associate Matchmaker Lori Czekaj, who co-coordinated the rendezvous. “This was the first event to be held at the Blue Line Grille since its opening, and we are so grateful to [owners] James ‘Doc’ Mendelson and Kevin Nord for hosting us.” Sports fans were crazy in love with the autographed Penguins hockey memorabilia, hockey tickets, and other merchandise that was up for grabs. “Doc is a dear friend and mentor, and having the opportunity to benefit a charity I love, too, well, it was a win-win opportunity,” says Czekaj. “The Modern Matchmaker is thrilled to be able to spotlight one of the newest and hottest date spots in Pittsburgh!” — A.B.

RONALD H. Brown Leadership Awards Gala
Esther Bush, Jack & Jerlean Daniel
It was a two-in-one fête for the Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh! The organization hosted its Ronald H. Brown Leadership Awards Gala, while also celebrating its 95th anniversary. Gathered in the West Club Lounge of Heinz Field, 385 guests noshed on a dinner of filet mignon and Cajun-grilled jumbo shrimp, accompanied by roasted asparagus, carrots, and a triplecheese risotto. A fabulous collection of confections, a Champagne toast, a dance band, and a surprise for Urban League President & CEO Esther Bush followed. “We invited students from the Urban League of Pittsburgh Charter School to perform, which was lovely,” says Vice President for Development & External Relations Mary Kay Filter Dietrich. Urban League Board of Directors First Vice Chair Judge Dwayne D. Woodruff, and gala co-chairs Alan Trivilino of PNC and Evan Frazier of Highmark, honored award recipients Chris Moore of WQED, Drs. Jerlean and Jack Daniel, and Enterprise Holdings, represented by Regional Vice President & General Manager Tim Nettles. “It was a wonderful party from start to finish,” says Dietrich. “The camaraderie was so warm and intimate, and we netted over $300,000 to offset the unfunded costs of services. ORR’s Jewelers Holiday Party

Four hundred Orr’s Jewelers patrons popped into the Squirrel Hill location for the flagship’s annual holiday affair. Guests perused the latest runway pieces from designer Fred Leighton; statement jewels from Stephen Webster; and vivid gemstones from David Yurman! As they glanced at the glitz, party-goers noshed on Tallulah’s shrimp macaroni and cheese, served in martini glasses; prosciutto-wrapped asparagus; and an array of sushi. Lush libations, including cocktails and wine, were served as buyers browsed the newest collections from John Hardy, Marco Bicego, Roberto Coin, and Shinola’s timeless timepieces. “This is the kickoff to our holiday season,” says Sandra Shock of Orr’s Jewelers. “It can snow, we can decorate, but it doesn’t really feel like the holidays until we have our annual party.” On Orr’s Jewelers’ Gift Guide for 2013 were gorgeous pieces from Ippolita, Penny Preville, and Cartier. Rest assured, the curated collection of Orr’s Jewelers’ Spring 2014 baubles will sparkle with textures, mixed metals, and resort trends. Simply irresistible! — A.B.

The Association Board of Directors of the YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh hosted this year’s Season of Giving Gala at the Omni William Penn Hotel, where nearly $280,000 was raised for the local YMCA and its programs! The monies garnered were a combination of the gala as well as the “ultimate sports raffle.” The blacktie extravaganza honored Gary P. Hunt, a shareholder of Tucker Arensberg, P.C., who carries serious passion for service. He spoke during the program, which followed cocktails, a silent auction, dinner and dessert, and preceded a live auction. Seared petit filet mignon with a shallot bourbon glaze and Tikka spice mahi-mahi with a papaya poblano sauce were served, and 325 guests enjoyed an open bar throughout the evening. John Parker and the John Parker Band rocked the ballroom with an exuberant performance! “The evening was a tremendous success,” says YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh President & CEO Rig Riggins. “We were delighted to celebrate Gary Hunt, and the decades of incredible work he has done for the Y and the community. The support from our guests and sponsors was truly outstanding. Thanks to them, we’ll be able to help more of our neighbors in need by continuing to deliver key services that help to improve their quality of life.” — A.B.

A private reception was held to celebrate the opening of Ross Park Mall’s new Armani Collezioni boutique, the first in America! The evening of cocktails featured appearances by Mario and Nathalie Lemieux; KDKA’s Bob Pompeani and family; Vocelli Pizza owner Varol Ablak; Dr. Ted Steliotes; and Rohrich Lexus General Manager Carlos Echevarria. The opening commenced a three-day donation period, where a percentage of Armani’s sales were donated to the Mario Lemieux Foundation. Started in 1993 after Lemieux’s successful fight against Hodgkin’s disease, he and Nathalie established the foundation to raise funds as a means to help find a cure for cancer. Austin’s Playroom Project, an initiative of the Mario Lemieux Foundation, was also a beneficiary of the night. Event donors included Schultz Ford and Elise Wright. The celebration proved the familiarity and prominence of the brand. Be one of the first people in the U.S. to experience the new store, which offers timeless elegance for men and women, right here in Pittsburgh at Ross Park Mall! — I.M.

Hope Has a Home Gala

Entertainment from the Ambridge Area High School Steel Drum Band was just one major highlight of this year’s Hope Has a Home Gala! Guests gathered at the Westin Convention Center Hotel for the annual fundraiser, themed “Help Is In Your Neighborhood,” which welcomed Paul Bacharach, Gateway Rehabilitation Center’s new president and CEO. Those attending noshed on mini pierogies, hibachi chicken, antipasto kebabs, an array of cheeses, and Clark Bars during the cocktail reception. Gateway Rehab’s founder Dr. Abraham Twerski held the premiere book signing for “The Rabbi & The Nuns: The Inside Story of a Rabbi’s Therapeutic Work with the Sisters of St. Francis,” the latest of 60 books he’s authored. Guest speaker Bob Carter of Bob Carter Companies took the podium after guests dined on a delicious dinner, finished with their choice of triple-chocolate Mousse Charlotte or raspberry cheesecake. Adding to the evening’s sweetness were adorable gingerbread house centerpieces from Kretchmar’s Bakery. Mistress of Ceremonies WTAE-TV’s Sally Wiggin emceed the program, which raised funds for Gateway Rehab. “My wife, Valerie, and I enjoyed the event very much,” says Bacharach. “I was very impressed with all of the speakers, and Bob Carter’s keynote was both personal and moving.” — A.B.

In celebration of becoming the official jeweler of the Pittsburgh Pirates, Casa D’Oro Jewelers held a special fan event at its store in the Four Points by Sheraton Pittsburgh North in Cranberry. While the event served as a kickoff party, in conjunction with being named the team’s official jeweler, it also gave fans the opportunity to meet players, coaches, executives, and broadcasters. More than 150 fans stopped by, receiving a $100 gift certificate from Casa D’Oro upon arrival. Guests enjoyed fabulous hors d’oeuvres, Champagne, and martinis, and mingled with Pirates pitchers Justin Wilson, Jeff Locke, and Charlie Morton; first baseman Gaby Sanchez; bullpen coach Euclides Rojas; and broadcaster Tim Neverett. Not to be outdone by the presence of PNC Park’s finest, the Pirate Parrot emerged in full bravado to greet fans and cause plenty of on-site mischief. The entire Casa D’Oro team was present to celebrate the new partnership, including president and founder Reza Liaghat and Vice President Sandy Ruse. “We gave the fans an opportunity to meet the players,” says Mike Alexander, owner of Alexander and Co. Advertising, the jeweler’s agency. “And, it gave us the opportunity to give fans an incentive to purchase jewelry.” The evening was an all-around celebration, while paying tribute to the best fans in baseball! — I.M.

BEHIND THE BAR By Andrea Bosco Photographs by Cayla Zahoran + MICHAEL FORNATARO
What’s the difference between a good drink and a great drink? The right tools. Learn from three master mixologists on the
secret weapons they keep in their bar arsenals. You’ll be inspired to refresh your in-home bar cart and bundle up for a sojourn to your choice barkeep.
ERIKA CLARK
Bar Manager of Kaya
Given her experience and zeal, Clark is as well-rounded as the cocktails she creates.
BOT TLE IT UP 1. “These are my thing. I love having a spray bottle behind the bar. It’s super helpful. With all of our martinis, comes a spritz in the glass. It’s a way to incorporate a really nice, flavorful bitter without the potency. You get more of the aromatics than anything. In our bourbon cocktails, we spray the glass with 16-year Lagavulin Scotch, which has big peat and lots of smoke.” Above, you see lemon bitters, and Wigle Whiskey’s organic lavender and rosemary bitters.
VITAL GADGETS 2. “The white European style peeler is a chef’s tool. That is how you get beautiful wide twists from your fruit. I use it for oranges. The other is a super cool, new toy I got from Microplane. I’m jazzed about it! It’s a threein-one tool with a bottle opener, a fine zester, and a super sharp twisting tool. It literally cuts through the rind of a lime like a hot knife through butter.” 3. “This badass muddler has teeth on the bottom. It helps when making Tiki drinks or an Old Fashioned because it grinds up wedges of fruit. This swizzle spoon is designed to stir rapidly by just spinning the ice in the glass, not moving the ice, so you’re not watering down the drink, you’re just chilling.” 4. “The measuring jigger starts at ¼ of an ounce and measures up to 2 ounces. If you mess up measuring, it can throw off the balance of the cocktail. Some cocktails are forgiving, others are not.”
I ntegral Ingredients “Fever-Tree tonic water is a great tool. It’s a really good tonic water and not that Schweppes nonsense. It’s one of my super sneaky tricks.” Clark suggests these concoctions for a “sweet and spicy” Valentine’s Day at Kaya.
The Instant Crush, named after the Daft Punk song, is habanero-infused tequila, Aperol, Yellow Chartreuse, homemade simple syrup of tamarind nectar, and fresh orange zest. “I top it with a little sparkling because the bubbles cut through just enough to brighten it up.” Made with Berentzen Wild Cherry Schnapps, the Cherry Spritz comprises Luxardo’s Maraschino cherry juice, sparkling bubbles, a cherry twist, and Clark’s now not-so-secret cherry shrub, made from the last batch of Rainier cherries last spring.

Nicole Marshall
Cigar Bar Bartender of Cioppino
Marshall has tended bar for 18 years — four of the last at Cioppino — and can assemble a beverage to appease all palates.
K ey To My H eart 1. One of Marshall’s bar essentials is a wine key. “Wine complements cigars.” The bottle shown here is the 2011 Cigar Zin, a rich, lush, well-structured wine that’s hearty with exotic fruit characteristics. The varietal boasts notes of deep black fruit, some spice, and a tinge of black pepper. 2. “ Manhattans are very popular with cigar smokers. Sometimes I feel like I make 30 in one day.” Marshall mixes bitters with Angel’s Envy Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey for the perfect pour. 3. “ M y cigar cutter and my lighter are two things I use a million times a day.” There’s a method to making the classic cut and Marshall has it down. “In the Cigar Bar, we have the best clientele. It’s different than any other bar. Five guests who don’t know one another are friends by the end of the night.” That’s Pittsburgh!
From February 13-15, Cioppino will gift a rose to each lovely lady and a complimentary glass of Prosecco to all couples, who can look forward to Valentine’s Day dinner specials and the restaurant’s full dinner menu. Reservations are required.
For Valentine’s Day, sip this sweet potion at Cioppino with your Romeo or Juliet.
The “Romeo and Juliet” is prepared with Grand Marnier, Chambord, a dash of peach schnapps, a splash of cranberry juice, and a splash of ginger ale. It’s garnished with three Maraschino cherries and an orange spiral garnish. “It’s the perfect match for Valentine’s Day, and something either party can enjoy.” Tip: She says to add tequila for a boozier bite. She pairs it with the Romeo Y Julieta cigar, which Marshall says is a cigar many women go for, as it has a lighterbodied profile. Jennifer Welsh
Bar Manager of Perlé
Welsh assisted in the opening of Perlé and hasn’t looked back. The opportunist returned to the high-volume nightlife scene to construct craft cocktails with a Champagne spin, unique to the Pittsburgh bar scene.
Pop, Fiz z , C link! 1. “ We use a wine sealer to keep our Champagne fresh, especially because we do about 13 to 14 bottles by the glass. It puts CO2 back into the bottle. They’re able to hold a lot longer than they would without.” 2. “ A lot of our cocktails on our specialty Champagne list have a lot of fresh juices in them. We constantly use a juicer to make those drinks.” 3. “We have a lot of requests for Old Fashioneds and Manhattans, and when it comes to whiskey, I prefer not shaking it, but stirring it.” 4. “ We use the filter hand-in-hand with the juicer to remove some of the larger particles, like lemon and lime seeds. In conjunction, we use the peel for zesting.” 5. “ The jigger is really a basic tool, but I’m really big into using them. I believe in getting the recipes down. If you have something a little off, it’s going to throw the entire drink off. Whenever I am making a cocktail, I like to use the jigger every time.” 6. “ Since we do a lot of whiskey-based cocktails, we use a lot of bitters. We also make some in-house — this winter, we did a cranberry-orange-cinnamon bitters. The Fee Brothers’ bitters provide a really large range.” Pictured above are Black Walnut Bitters and Aztec Chocolate Bitters.
Take a walk down lovers’ lane and spend Valentine’s Day at Perlé. The Lovers Lane of Champagne & World Tour Tasting features six Champagnes and Veuve Yellow Label. Designed for whiskey drinkers, the Manhattan Noir Champagntini is Welsh’s spin on the bar’s Manhattan Noir, offering black cherry notes and a pretty orange-pink hue. A top seller, the Rose Bud is made with St. Germain, grapefruit juice, and rosé Champagne, and is nicknamed for Welsh, so it’s a personal favorite. The cordial-based Kir Rosé is made with Courvoisier cognac and rosé. “It’s sort of X Rated meets Hpnotiq. Topped with Champagne, it’s simple, basic, and pretty smooth.” Garnished with a raspberry, this cocktail is a good go-to for male customers because of the cognac, says Welsh. Backed by an admirable love story, this $400 bottle of Nicolas Feuillatte Palmes D’or Brut ’99 was designed to win a famous opera singer’s heart. Black pearls decorate the vintage bottle, one of the highest-ranked among Champagnes. Perlé, 25 Market Square, Downtown. 412.471.2058. perlepgh.com. w hirlmaga z ine . com

Something for Everyone The Double Wide Grill prides itself on the use of fresh ingredients; rangefree eggs; grass-fed beef; and vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options! While its barbecue and burgers are über-popular options, the restaurant’s commitment to vegan and vegetarian is strong. “We recognize the importance of this to our customers and really strive to cook separately,” says Scott Kramer, co-owner of Double Wide Grill. “We have a second fryer, and our wood-grilled vegan items are cooked on a differentiated and elevated section of the grill. We educate the employees on our many reasons for a vegetarian doctrine, including ecological, health, allergy, and religious grounds.” In his travels to Jamaica and Mexico, Kramer discovered the recipes for Caribbean Coconut Tofu and Citrus Caper Tilapia. The super smart, science-savvy food television personality Alton Brown is perhaps best known for creating and hosting the 13-year Food Network show Good Eats, and as host of Iron Chef America. His mini-series masterpiece Feasting on Asphalt pounds the pavement, touring viewers of food on the road. Brown travels by sea on the show’s spin-off Feasting on Waves. You’ve seen the humorous host as a mentor and judge of The Next Food Network Star; on Travel Channel’s The Layover, where he escorts Anthony Bourdain through Atlanta, Brown’s hometown; and on commercials for Welch’s grape juice. The bow-tie enrobed entertainer evolves the food game with his new show Cutthroat Kitchen, where four chefs go head to pan, without all the necessary cooking tools and $25,000. His first-ever traveling show Alton Brown Live! The Edible Inevitable Tour halts at the Byham Theater on February 24. Given his wit and wisdom, it’s no question you can expect the unexpected.
WHIRL: Are you looking forward to your visit to Pittsburgh? Alton Brown: I like Pittsburgh. It’s not like other cities having food revolutions because of outside influences, where chefs are coming in with chains. It’s growing from the inside, which makes it super authentic and satisfying. It’s dynamite. WHIRL: What can tour-goers expect from your show? AB: My show is truly a culinary-based variety show. There is live music, including food songs by my trio. The CD is coming out this year. There are puppets and very large, unusual food demonstrations. I promise it’s nothing you’ve seen before. There is a lot of audience interaction, and it’s really for the whole family. WHIRL: How did you break into the business? AB: It was more a matter of ignorance and timing. I set out to Photograph from Alton Brown Live! The Edible Inevitable Tour.
make a food show, having worked as a cinematographer and commercial director. I decided to attend culinary school and make the pilot for Good Eats in 1997. I couldn’t get anyone to watch it. We posted it on a website, which was unheard of in those days, and it just so happened, a program executive at Food Network saw. From there, everything snowballed quickly. WHIRL: What’s your breakfast go-to? AB: Breakfast means eggs. I’m an egg fanatic. There’s nothing better than fried eggs. I eat them and feel bright, shiny, and new again. You’ve got the rest of the day to work it off. When I’m home, I make breakfast every morning for my daughter. FEBRUARY 2014
Modern Mobility Rob Cochran is leading Western Pennsylvania’s auto industry his way: smart, fair, and easy By Rachel Jones | Photograph by Rob Larson Styling by Emily Witzel, La Pomponnée Salon & Spa
O
ne of the most stressful days of my life was the day I bought my first brand new car. I must note that I went into the dealership with my brother and sister, and all three of us wanted to give them our less-than-perfect used cars and leave with shiny new ones. While I know our family plan made things a little complicated, the constant negotiation of it all was exhausting. He’d offer a price. We’d offer a price. He’d talk to the manager. We’d try to hold our own. By the end of it all, I felt drained — and very glad I had some time before I had to experience that again. “For far too long, the auto industry has allowed aggressive sales tactics to turn what should be an enjoyable event into a frustrating experience,” says Rob Cochran, president and CEO of #1 Cochran. According to Cochran, the lack of trust created by those tactics affects even the best dealers. “Because consumers tend to distrust car dealers, even those of us who offer great prices find that some customers don’t have enough confidence in those prices to make the purchase without shopping around first. So, we decided to clear the air and build an entirely new business model based on transparency in pricing.” Four years ago, #1 Cochran started planning the Clearly Better Car Buying concept. Utilizing technology that wasn’t available before, the company can now determine the most accurate price for each vehicle, and be up front and transparent about how that price is determined. “Part of the frustration that consumers have is that the typical showroom process does not match up with online shopping experiences,” Cochran explains. “It takes more time, you can’t find the information you want as quickly, it’s got this mysterious haze that’s been clouding it. We’ve done everything we can to eliminate what customers dislike and replace it with a process they can trust.” That includes using information from reputable third parties, like AutoTrader.com and Edmunds.com, to help validate pricing and speed up the transaction. For example, if you want to trade in a car — or three — the team at #1 Cochran will check out its value on AutoTrader.com, compare it to
the local market, and determine the price. Because #1 Cochran has such depth in its used car inventory, they are frequently able to offer the better deal. If not, you are guaranteed the third-party price. Plus, #1 Cochran will still buy your car, even if you do not purchase a new car from them. Similarly, Edmunds.com looks at the true value of the car, based on how much new models are selling for in our marketplace. Other factors, like the inventory and the car’s age are worked in, and a final price is determined. “It’s really information that people could research at home, but we’re compiling it all and putting it in one package,” Cochran says. “The business model works because of our scale. It’s the innovation and strong direction coupled with scale that makes this exciting for us and gives us the ability to impact the industry.” With 21 dealerships and 16 brands, #1 Cochran has the largest geographical footprint in the Pittsburgh auto world. It’s also one of the top private dealers in the nation, making it a large and stable platform to successfully launch Clearly Better Car Buying. After conducting a three-month trial run last spring, 96 percent of customers reported that their experience was significantly better than past car buying experiences. In October 2013, #1 Cochran publicly unveiled the new method. “It’s important to me for our company to be viewed as leaders,” Cochran says. “I don’t think there’s any larger opportunity within our industry than to help it evolve to become more consumer friendly.” Cochran expects more to come as his team perfects the process, smoothing out any bumps in the road and keeping the car buying stress-free. “We’re going to continue to evolve over time, implementing and tweaking what we can to make the entire process in the showroom or service lane as transparent and easy to understand as possible,” Cochran says. “For us, it’s nice to know in your gut that you’re doing the right thing for the consumer and the market.” Clearly. #1 Cochran, Cochran.com.
Key Terms: • ClearCut Pricing with Best Price Guarantee: every price is pre-adjusted to reflect the actual selling prices of identical vehicles. • TradeMax Guarantee with Dual Evaluation: customers will receive two valuations for their trade, one from an independent third party and one from #1 Cochran. The customers are paid the higher valuation, guaranteed. • 3 Day/150 Mile Money-back Guarantee: customers can return a purchased vehicle within that time, no questions asked.

FEBRUARY 2014

uring this month of love, we’ve got relationships on the brain. And one of the most important ones we want to establish is with a car dealership. Finding one that is a good fit can sometimes feel like the search for Mr. or Mrs. Right. We want someone who is honest and trustworthy, who will treat us right, and is ready to commit long-term. Lucky for us, Pittsburgh is full of dealerships that are ready to help us find the car we need and keep our relationships going, long after the car has left the lot. Our Editorial Assistant Liz Petoniak, who grew up in Buffalo, N.Y., still makes the journey back to her hometown dealership if her Jeep has any troubles.
Auto Palace Porsche
Having a relationship like that with our car dealer gives us warm fuzzy feelings — it’s nice to know we can depend on them for anything at any time. After all, if we are putting our families in these cars, we want to work with someone who will treat us like family, too. So, peruse these dealer profiles, and find the one to add to your family. Each one offers special programs and plans to keep customers happy, so choose the one that’s a perfect match for you. Plus, check out their hottest cars for 2014, and browse even more vehicles at the 2014 Pittsburgh International Auto Show, taking place February 14-17. There are plenty of makes and models to make our hearts flutter and have us saying, “I do!”
Aaron Comstock General Manager
When purchasing a luxury vehicle, such as a Porsche, customers expect an equally luxurious experience with the auto dealer. Auto Palace Porsche strives to provide customer service that is on par with the Porsche brand itself. “Unique financing and lease specials, partnered with customer track events, offer our customers not only a thrilling ‘Porsche’ experience, but a truly special ‘Auto Palace Porsche’ experience,” says Aaron Comstock, general manager at Auto Palace Porsche. The high-end vehicles offer a great deal of features that improve the driving experience, so Auto Palace Porsche wants to make sure its clients soak up as much as they can from their purchases. “Priority No. 1 is to have every customer know everything there is to know about their vehicle,” Comstock says. The dedicated staff is always available to answer any questions, and service appointments can be made easily online or on the phone. Every technician at Auto Palace Porsche has completed rigorous training at a Porsche technical center, making them experts of their craft. Inside the showroom, some of the latest and most historical Porsches are beautifully displayed, emphasizing the dealership’s love of the brand. And this year, the entire facility will receive a multimillion dollar makeover to enhance the customer experience. When they are not busy enjoying their Porsches, clients often attend social and driving events with other Porsche lovers. The sense of community that these events bring help keep the relationship between Auto Palace Porsche and their clients strong. By making this connection, the dealership continues to receive rave reviews and praise for its dedication and service. And the best compliment? “A smile,” Comstock says, “when they return to Auto Palace Porsche to purchase their second, third, or fourth Porsche.” Auto Palace Porsche, 4627 Baum Blvd., Oakland. 412.687.4000. auto-palace.com. Jim Guerry General Manager
The best way to know what clients want is to ask them! At Bobby Rahal Automotive Group, an entire department is dedicated to reaching out to every client who has been in for shopping or services and getting their feedback on the experience. “They get input back and if there are any issues, the department manager and general manager are called to act on it,” says Jim Guerry, general manager at Bobby Rahal Automotive Group. “We try to nip potential problems in the bud before they become larger problems.” With 50 percent of the Jaguar and Land Rover staffs attending customer advocacy training, these problems are usually few and far between. “Typical response is extremely positive,” Guerry says. “It is reflected in our high scores for client satisfaction.” To maintain these positive relationships, the members of Bobby Rahal Automotive Group follow up with customers to check in on their vehicles, offer specials, or invite them to events. The events and parties at the showrooms always have something special for customers. One of the more popular get-togethers is a service clinic with free checkups, car washes, and gifts. Bobby Rahal Automotive Group is also involved in the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix. All clients can admire the vehicles and enjoy a free lunch during race weekend. Jaguar and Land Rover customer events are designed to celebrate the clients’ love of cars and thank them for their commitment over the years. Lexus of North Hills
Kevin Mullen Vice President & General Manager
When a client visits Lexus of North Hills, the staff is dedicated to making sure the comfort level is high and the pressure is low. They know that how a customer is treated after the sale is very important to their company. “We just want to build a relationship,” says Kevin Mullen, vice president and general manager of Lexus of North Hills. “Our philosophy is to treat everyone like guests in our home.” Clients are treated to free car washes, manicures, chair massages, and more while waiting for their cars to be serviced. And if you don’t have time to swing by, Lexus of North Hills will pick up your vehicle at your home or office, leave a loaner Lexus vehicle in its place, and swap the vehicles back once the service is complete. “We know time is the most important element,” Mullen says. “We don’t want to waste yours.” Service appointments can be scheduled quickly online, and reminders are emailed regularly. A customer relations system keeps track of the vehicle’s history, so maintenance and inspection reminders are sent via email or text to keep all of the clients informed. “Most people forget things like that, so they are very appreciative,” Mullen says. “By embracing the latest technology, we can make everything less expensive, much easier, and much faster for our customers.” The advanced technology now in place in Lexus vehicles can be overwhelming to some new customers. To make sure they are getting the most out of their cars, these customers are invited to attend a new owner welcoming party. Held every quarter at the dealership, these get-togethers offer wine, cheese, and on-hand specialists to explain everything. Lexus of North Hills also hosts and supports events for local charities. “Not only is it the right thing to do, a lot of our customers are involved with charities,” Mullen says. “Our commitment to the community goes beyond the average. We do much more than sell cars to cement our customer relationships.”Lexus of North Hills, 15025 U.S. Route 19, Wexford. 724.940.1400. lexusofnorthhills.com.

Spring Ahead WORTH New York style consultant Kate Fuhrer tells us that when it comes to upcoming spring styles, “things are getting graphic this season, from plaids to stripes and checks. There are delicious colors, from blues, greens, and ruby red, to navy, camel and creams, and of course, black and white.” Fuhrer selected a few favorite looks from the WORTH Spring 2014 collection, including this ruby leather coat paired with a white and ruby colorblock pullover jersey, and ruby and white diamond jacquard skirt. She suggests to finish the look with a laser-cut leather tote. Wondering how to buy? Schedule a private consultation with Fuhrer. “The collection is shown in my home by appointment to provide the customer with a casual, private, and personal shopping experience. My clients enjoy this way of shopping and are always complimented on their unique and beautiful style,” she says. WORTH New York, worthnewyork.com. Beauty to Behold Local beauty company FutureDerm works to make sure its clients are “beautiful, well-informed, and happy,” and, in continuing fulfillment of that goal, is adding to its product line of scientifically formulated, anti-aging skincare products. Founder Nicki Zevola honed her skills as a skincare expert while studying at the University of Pittsburgh, and later, through AlphaLab, a startup accelerator program based in Pittsburgh. Today, the company offers a variety of products, including the new FutureDerm Seven Wonders Antioxidant-Rich Toner, packed with anti-inflammatory, skin-calming ingredients; FutureDerm Skin Reborn Facial Cleanser, which works to firm skin, protect the skin barrier function, and balance skin’s pH levels; and now available is the FutureDerm Organic 8 Line, a cleanser-tonermoisturizer trio made with eight, all-natural, toxinfree ingredients. Now that’s a thing of beauty! FutureDerm, futurederm.com.
Breakthrough Boost Looking to boost your skincare routine to new heights? NeriumAD Age-Defying Treatment and Day Cream has made its mark on the market thanks to the noticeable anti-aging results it provides users. The two-step system — one cream for morning, another for night — utilizes extract from the Nerium oleander plant to reduce fine lines, wrinkles, discoloration, enlarged pores, and uneven skin texture. The product has been featured on CBS News, which glowingly profiled its effectiveness and the huge following of Nerium International lovers. Want more details? Look no further than local consultants Jeffrey Smith and Sandy DiGregory at Jeffrey Smith Studio. “After being in the beauty industry for so many years, we’ve finally found a product that we feel very passionate about and that shows true results,” says DiGregory. Rock Your Walk As part of our ongoing quest for better posture, we’re focusing on feet — in particular supportive soles — and Roberta Weissburg of Roberta Weissburg Leathers says that Lucchese boots are simply the best when it comes to combining style and comfort. The line of boots have been handmade in Texas, since 1883, and Weissburg is the exclusive local retailer. Not only do these boots offer versatility — “Styles range from the most basic, conservative boot to one of the wildest boots you can imagine,” she says — they also treat our feet well. Because of the impeccable craftsmanship, the boots “support the spine and arch. If they fit right, your feet will feel really happy in them. The design of Lucchese boots is both a science and an art.” Peruse the collections in Shadyside and SouthSide Works, and get walking — comfortably! Wear Your Inspiration on Your Sleeve
By Rachel JoneS
“Dress for the job you want, not the job you have.” As we take on February fitness challenges, we want to be strong fit chicks. And when we need that extra boost of motivation and confidence, we turn — as we usually do — to clothes. By picking pieces from Be What Inspires You, we can bear our fitness mantras on our tees, making inspiration just a glance away. Created by workout enthusiast Sheri Kehren, the trendy tops combine fashion with fitness, making a smooth transition from in the gym to the street. “Be What Inspires You is my outlet to share passion and determination with others through a unique collection of apparel,” Kehren says. “When you wear it, it is something you can reflect on. It will motivate you to go hard, and inspire you to do anything or be anything you want.” Initially created for women in October 2013, the line is expanding to include pieces for men later this year, starting with shirts from its partner, Warriors Fitness. The top-selling women’s tees sport messages like Strong & Fearless, Thou Shalt Be Badass, Lipstick & Diamonds & Champagne & Dead Lifts (pictured above), Femme Fitale, and Boom. The edgy cuts and tough sayings help us stick it out and reach our goals, which is Kehren’s own goal for the line. “We really want to be involved in the community to help inspire others,” she explains. “We believe that good things come to those who work for it. Overcoming challenges is what makes life meaningful. And, most of all, we want people to believe in themselves!” Shop Be What Inspires You at inspiredbybe.com or at Amerifit Fitness Club & Spa, 100 Roessler Road, Green Tree. 412.341.3033. amerifitfitnessclub.com.

Comprehensive Care After practicing oncology at UPMC for six years, Dr. Lanie Francis, hematologist/ medical oncologist at UPMC Hillman CancerCenter, started gaining interest in integrating mind-body practices with traditional cancer care. So did her patients. “I find that more and more patients are asking about this,” Dr. Francis says. “If they’re newly diagnosed, they ask what to eat. Then, they ask for help with pain or fatigue without taking pills.” The standard treatments are important for patients, but supplementing with holistic practices like yoga, meditation, acupuncture, or music therapy helps boost moods and lower stress. Even gentle stretching can ease discomforting symptoms. With so many of her patients doing their own research on integrative oncology, Dr. Francis organized the first Hillman Cancer Center Wellness Fair in October 2013 to reach a larger audience. More than 100 patients and UPMC Hillman Cancer Center staff met with representatives in areas from skin care and massage therapy, to nutrition and Reiki. “We’re trying to create a care plan for patients where they work on the therapies we suggest, and we follow through and supervise in a safe environment,” Dr. Francis says. “To me, that loop is very important, and what patients want and respond to.” Moving forward with her plan, Dr. Francis started Integrative Oncology Lecture Series: Making Wellness a Reality. The four panel discussions introduce the public to experts in movement, touch, nutrition, and mindfulness who will address symptoms experienced by cancer patients. “People have been really enthusiastic about how we’ve been tackling this and receptive and hungry for conversation as they battle cancer,” Dr. Francis says. “My goal is to really work with the momentum of the wellness fair and lecture series and bring more patients into this.” UPMC Hillman CancerCenter, 5115 Centre Ave., Shadyside. 412.647.2811. upmccancercenter.com.

Jaime Azzara + Matt Lagoy By Liz Petoniak PHOTOGRAPHS FROM THE BRAND STUDIO Pittsburgh native Jaime Azzara unexpectedly met her future husband, Matt Lagoy, at a friend’s party in Philadelphia. She says, “He was visiting from New York City that weekend, and our paths were lucky enough to have crossed. It’s funny because I almost didn’t go to the party that day, but I’m so glad that I did!” The pair dated for four years prior to Matt’s surprise proposal. He popped the question the night before the couple’s summer kickoff party at their home in Philadelphia. “It was so much fun to celebrate with the people who meant the most to us and priceless to see the looks on their faces when we shared our great news!” she says. They returned to Jaime’s hometown for their wedding at Saint Mary of the Mount Parish, where they exchanged vows in front of 170 friends and family members. “Following the ceremony, Matt and I were able to steal a few moments to enjoy the view and take it all in. Standing atop Mt. Washington, we truly felt like we were on top of the world. We couldn’t have been more excited to start our life together,” says Jaime. The reception inside the Carnegie Music Hall foyer exuded classic elegance in every detail. Drawing inspiration from the Champagne, gold, and sea foam color palette of the museum’s gilded Baroque ceiling; the green marble pillars; and the museum’s art collection, the duo opted to decorate with metallic gold mercury glass votives and escort cards painted in the Impressionist style, placed on wooden easels. Jamie says, “Matt’s guests visiting from Philadelphia loved experiencing this Pittsburgh tradition firsthand.”

PHOTOGRAPH FROM LAUREL MOUNTAIN PHOTOGRAPHY Mutual friends introduced Ashley Carnahan and Jeff Downey during their first semester at Westminster College. Ashley says, “We walked around campus for hours one day, sharing stories about each other’s families and friends, and learning more about each other. It was the start of an incredible friendship and love.” They shared six years together leading up to Jeff’s proposal along the North Shore Riverwalk near PNC Park. “After taking pictures of the beautiful city all lit up and its glowing reflection on the river, he wanted to take a picture of the two of us together. While we were waiting for the timer to go off, I looked over and Jeff had gotten down on one knee!” Nearly one year later, Ashley and Jeff
celebrated their union with a reception for 180 guests at South Hills Country Club and a ceremony prior at St. Anne Catholic Church in Castle Shannon, where Jeff went to grade school and currently coaches basketball. The duo’s favorite memory of the big day was walking out of the church as husband and wife into a sea of friends blowing bubbles, cheering, and showering their love all around them.

Kelly May + Michael Mossbauer PHOTOGRAPH FROM PITTSBURGH WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY Michael Mossbauer proposed to his girlfriend of three years, Kelly May, during a trip to visit his family in California. The eventful day included sightseeing at the Golden Gate Bridge, Pier 39, and Sausalito, Calif., sailing on the bay, and a trek through Muir Woods National Monument to see the famous redwood forest. Kelly says, “He and I were walking along one of the trails, and we stopped to read about the trees on one of the trail markers. While I was looking at the board he said, ‘Hey, check out this tree!’ When I turned around, he had the ring box open!” The pair, who first met in seventh grade at Harrison Middle School, wed at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Roman Catholic Church in Whitehall, where Kelly attended Mass growing up. A black, red, and white hued reception for 100 guests followed at Salvatore’s in the South Hills. The day was filled with unforgettable moments: a beautiful toast from Kelly’s sister, the couple’s first dance Details in WHIRL Directory, page 102.

“H
ello, this is Bernadette Peters calling.” In just six words, the ginger-haired vixen put me at ease with her soft, sultry tone — a signature characteristic that complements her coiled coif. The icon’s career, spanning five decades, needs no introduction. And, as she spoke, her incalculable roster of performances and portrayals resonated with me: Annie Get Your Gun, The Carol Burnett Show, Cinderella, The Jerk, Into The Woods, Pennies From Heaven, Pink Cadillac, the list goes on...and on. The three-time Tony Award winner recently starred in Stephen Sondheim and Wynton Marsalis’ A Bed and a Chair: A New York Love Affair and appeared on NBC’s hit show SMASH. A vested children’s book author, Peters is writing her tertiary publication — this one about her new dog, Charlie. Her book proceeds benefit Broadway Barks, an organization she co-founded with Mary Tyler Moore that supports more than 27 New York City animal shelters. With a résumé as voluminous as her luxe locks, the chanteuse finds harmony in her versatile schedule. “The thing about being an actress and a performer is that your life is never the same,” she says.

FEBRUARY 2014
“Every morning, I’m up at 9 a.m. to get Charlie ready for the dog walker to go play with other dogs, then I usually go down to the gym in the building. Basically, everything is up for grabs unless I’m in a show in New York, then I have a very definite schedule. I vocalize, I leave for the theater around 4:30 p.m., I have sushi, I vocalize again, then I get quiet and focus on the show. I like to think about why we’re all there and what we’re trying to make happen. It’s pretty wonderful.” Peters will pop into Carnegie Music Hall on February 22 for a sizzling performance as part of The Equality Gayla: An Evening with Bernadette Peters, benefiting the Delta Foundation of Pittsburgh. “I’ve always been a supporter of the LGBT community,” she says. “I think it’s important for young people and their parents to not feel like outsiders. It’s working into our social network, and it’s a great thing.” Aside from her 2014 concert lineup, Peters says she plans to focus on how she can best help people and animals. Now we think that’s pretty wonderful. Bernadette Peters, bernadettepeters.com.
