As we stay glued to the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics this month, keep an eye out for three USA ice hockey players representing Pittsburgh. In the net for the women’s ice hockey team is Robert Morris grad Brianne McLaughlin. (Editor’s Note: The Colonials’ ice hockey team was ranked No. 6 in the country at time of press!) The men’s ice hockey team, jokingly nicknamed “Team Pittsburgh,” will include Pittsburgh Penguins Executive Vice President and General Manager Ray Shero; Head Coach Dan Bylsma; Assistant Coach Tony Granato; Video Coordinator Andy Saucier; defenseman Paul Martin; and defenseman Brooks Orpik. “There is a great deal of pride in representing the city and our team as part of Team USA,” Bylsma says.

WHIRL: What was your first reaction to being named to Team USA?

Brianne McLaughlin: Honestly, I was relieved. When I made the [Vancouver Winter Olympics] team in 2010, I was still in school. I had no idea what the older girls had gone through the years leading up to it. Now I know the whole process. To finally make it meant that I could relax for a second and prepare even harder for what’s to come. I couldn’t be more excited for the opportunity we have in front of us.

WHIRL: Is it nice having some Penguins on the team with you?

WHIRL: How do the Olympics compare to other games?

Brooks Orpik: It’s always fun when you have some familiar faces around you for that. It’s a little different having coaches or players, but teammates that you’re friends with is always a lot of fun. WHIRL: What are you most looking forward to at the Olympics?

Paul Martin: I’m most looking forward to putting on the red, white, and blue Dan Bylsma: The coaching aspect is sweater and bringing home a gold the same. But the magnitude, coaching medal. Wumi Agunbiade picked up a basketball at age 2 and hasn’t set it down since. “I really love the game,” says the Duquesne University forward. “There are challenges you have to face, but you have the power to dictate the outcome.” The ambitious athlete worked hard at her game, attracting recruiters when she hit eighth grade. The Pickering, Ontario, native personally connected with the Dukes, who sent consistent, hand-written letters. When Agunbiade visited the school, she instantly meshed with the team’s family dynamic. Now, in her senior year, she’s moved up to one of the heads of the household, hoping to lead the team to an Atlantic 10 Conference Championship. “I’ve accepted my role as one of the main leaders on the team,” Agunbiade says. “I feel like my teammates trust me, and I’m able to lead them on the most appropriate path.” The sharp shooter is definitely one to follow, having been named to 2012’s Atlantic 10 Second-Team All-Conference and 2013’s Atlantic 10 First-Team All-Conference. She was also chosen as the 2011 Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year. As the psychology major prepares for life after graduation, basketball will not be left out. “I plan to play professionally,” she says. “If I get the opportunity to get in the WNBA, I’m going to seize it.” Duquesne University, goduquesne.com. “Hockey is a different sport,” says Kellen Carleton. “I think it’s really a fun game. I love the competition. I love the camaraderie with my teammates.” He also loves using hockey to help others. The Central Catholic High School senior was nominated to Hines Ward’s Positive Athlete Pittsburgh program this year for his work helping disabled children enjoy ice skating through the creative use of sleds. As a nominee, Carleton had a spot on “The Hines Ward Show,” where he discussed his charity work and time on the Vikings’ varsity ice hockey team. “It was really a great experience,” he says. “Hines Ward is such an amazing person and embodies that organization so well.” Carleton is now eligible to win a college scholarship, which will come in handy when he starts at Carnegie Mellon University next fall. The school was an easy choice, as it’s where his parents met and where his brother plays on the club ice hockey team now. And Carleton can’t wait to join him. “It’s a great school,” Carleton says. “The college process is stressful, but it’s been a good year. Now that things have settled down, I’m just having fun playing hockey with my friends.” Central Catholic High School, centralcatholichs.com.

By Andrew Fillipponi Although a good talk show host wouldn’t want to admit it, we all have topics to get us through a slow-moving sports day. Should Hines Ward make the Pro Football Hall of Fame? Is Bob Nutting a good owner? Can the Penguins win a Stanley Cup with Marc-Andre Fleury? All guarantee to get phones to ring when you’re feeling at your laziest. Last month, I had to cross one of those age-old sports questions off my list: Do you like the BCS? Yes, college football will finally get the playoff it deserves next year. The BCS died in January. The new system works like this: Four teams will be selected by a 13-person committee. The committee is made up of former coaches, commissioners, and even a politician (Condoleezza Rice), giving it a unique blend of viewpoints. On a rotating basis, six bowls — Rose, Fiesta, Sugar, Orange, Chick-Fil-A, and Cotton — will host the semifinal games. The championship game will change cities annually. Next year’s title game will be held in Jerry Jones’ lavish Cowboys Stadium. Those are the nuts and bolts of the new college football post-season. It beats the old way. It gives more teams a chance to earn a title on the field. So, what’s left to complain about? Well, as it turns out, a lot. College football should adopt the system used by its brother, Division I-AA. Go to a full-scale tournament with 24 teams. Include all 10 conference winners and invite 14 at-large schools. That’s the system used in the FCS. It’s the most fair. It gives David a sling shot. In the last few years, schools like Boise State, TCU, and Utah have gone undefeated. This would give them a chance, albeit a small one, to win a title. A 24-team bracket would likely include every one- and two-loss team from the power conferences. Those are teams who have proven capable of winning a title. LSU won a championship with two losses in 2007. What made them better than the other dozen two-loss BCS teams? More votes in the AP and Coaches polls. I also don’t trust the selection committee. You’ll have 13 people of varying college football backgrounds subject to politicking and full of bias. Who says they get the four teams right? I generally think people aren’t smart. More people means more chances to screw it up. Use a computer. Have people far smarter than old football coaches and athletic directors devise a math formula to rank teams. From that formula, pick the highest ranking 14 teams who didn’t win their conference. Do that, and college football will be on its way to crowning a true national champion. A talk show host hates to lose a controversial subject. The BCS was certainly that. Thankfully, this new college football playoff won’t deliver. I’ll have the phone lines jammed again next January. I’ve got my pen and paper out ready to add another question to my sports talk for dummies list: Do you like the college football playoff? Genius.

Held at Lexus of North Hills, its sponsor, the evening raised $38,000 for the Cribs for Kids® Infant Safe Sleep Initiative, with the help of 150 attendees! “This is my third year involved in this wonderful charity, and every year, it is better attended and raises more money for the cause,” says Kevin Mullen, vice president and general manager of Lexus of North Hills. Singles in the city “faced off” to support the Mario Lemieux Foundation at Blue Line Grille! The Modern Matchmaker and WHIRL Magazine hosted 75 guests, who raised nearly $10,000 in just a few hours. As those attending mingled, hors d’oeuvres, including chorizo and wild mushroom quesadilla bites; grilled cheese bites; and buffalo chicken bites were passed around. The Association Board of Directors of the YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh hosted this year’s Season of Giving Gala at the Omni William Penn Hotel, where nearly $280,000 was raised for the local YMCA and its programs! The monies garnered were a combination of the gala as well as the “ultimate sports raffle.” The blacktie extravaganza honored Gary P. Hunt, a shareholder of Tucker Arensberg, P.C., who carries serious passion for service. He spoke during the program, which followed cocktails, a silent auction, dinner and dessert, and preceded a live auction. Seared petit filet mignon with a shallot bourbon glaze and Tikka spice mahi-mahi with a papaya poblano sauce were served, and 325 guests enjoyed an open bar throughout the evening. John Parker and the John Parker Band rocked the ballroom with an exuberant performance! “The evening was a tremendous success,” says YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh President & CEO Rig Riggins. “We were delighted to celebrate Gary Hunt, and the decades of incredible work he has done for the Y and the community. A private reception was held to celebrate the opening of Ross Park Mall’s new Armani Collezioni boutique, the first in America! Entertainment from the Ambridge Area High School Steel Drum Band was just one major highlight of this year’s Hope Has a Home Gala! Guests gathered at the Westin Convention Center Hotel for the annual fundraiser, themed “Help Is In Your Neighborhood,” which welcomed Paul Bacharach, Gateway Rehabilitation Center’s new president and CEO. Those attending noshed on mini pierogies, hibachi chicken, antipasto kebabs, an array of cheeses, and Clark Bars during the cocktail reception. Gateway Rehab’s founder Dr. Abraham Twerski held the premiere book signing for “The Rabbi & The Nuns: The Inside Story of a Rabbi’s Therapeutic Work with the Sisters of St. Francis,” the latest of 60 books he’s authored. Guest speaker Bob Carter of Bob Carter Companies took the podium after guests dined on a delicious dinner, finished with their choice of triple-chocolate Mousse Charlotte or raspberry cheesecake. Adding to the evening’s sweetness were adorable gingerbread house centerpieces from Kretchmar’s Bakery. Mistress of Ceremonies WTAE-TV’s Sally Wiggin emceed the program, which raised funds for Gateway Rehab. “My wife, Valerie, and I enjoyed the event very much,” says Bacharach. “I was very impressed with all of the speakers, and Bob Carter’s keynote was both personal and moving.” — A.B.

In celebration of becoming the official jeweler of the Pittsburgh Pirates, Casa D’Oro Jewelers held a special fan event at its store in the Four Points by Sheraton Pittsburgh North in Cranberry. While the event served as a kickoff party, in conjunction with being named the team’s official jeweler, it also gave fans the opportunity to meet players, coaches, executives, and broadcasters. More than 150 fans stopped by, receiving a $100 gift certificate from Casa D’Oro upon arrival. Guests enjoyed fabulous hors d’oeuvres, Champagne, and martinis, and mingled with Pirates pitchers Justin Wilson, Jeff Locke, and Charlie Morton; first baseman Gaby Sanchez; bullpen coach Euclides Rojas; and broadcaster Tim Neverett. Not to be outdone by the presence of PNC Park’s finest, the Pirate Parrot emerged in full bravado to greet fans and cause plenty of on-site mischief. The entire Casa D’Oro team was present to celebrate the new partnership, including president and founder Reza Liaghat and Vice President Sandy Ruse. “We gave the fans an opportunity to meet the players,” says Mike Alexander, owner of Alexander and Co. BOT TLE IT UP 1. “These are my thing. I love having a spray bottle behind the bar. It’s super helpful. With all of our martinis, comes a spritz in the glass. It’s a way to incorporate a really nice, flavorful bitter without the potency. You get more of the aromatics than anything. In our bourbon cocktails, we spray the glass with 16-year Lagavulin Scotch, which has big peat and lots of smoke.” Above, you see lemon bitters, and Wigle Whiskey’s organic lavender and rosemary bitters.

VITAL GADGETS 2. “The white European style peeler is a chef’s tool. That is how you get beautiful wide twists from your fruit. I use it for oranges. The other is a super cool, new toy I got from Microplane. I’m jazzed about it! It’s a threein-one tool with a bottle opener, a fine zester, and a super sharp twisting tool. It literally cuts through the rind of a lime like a hot knife through butter.” 3. “This badass muddler has teeth on the bottom. It helps when making Tiki drinks or an Old Fashioned because it grinds up wedges of fruit. This swizzle spoon is designed to stir rapidly by just spinning the ice in the glass, not moving the ice, so you’re not watering down the drink, you’re just chilling.” 4. “The measuring jigger starts at ¼ of an ounce and measures up to 2 ounces. If you mess up measuring, it can throw off the balance of the cocktail. Some cocktails are forgiving, others are not.”

I ntegral Ingredients “Fever-Tree tonic water is a great tool. It’s a really good tonic water and not that Schweppes nonsense. It’s one of my super sneaky tricks.” Clark suggests these concoctions for a “sweet and spicy” Valentine’s Day at Kaya.

The Instant Crush, named after the Daft Punk song, is habanero-infused tequila, Aperol, Yellow Chartreuse, homemade simple syrup of tamarind nectar, and fresh orange zest. “I top it with a little sparkling because the bubbles cut through just enough to brighten it up.” Made with Berentzen Wild Cherry Schnapps, the Cherry Spritz comprises Luxardo’s Maraschino cherry juice, sparkling bubbles, a cherry twist, and Clark’s now not-so-secret cherry shrub, made from the last batch of Rainier cherries last spring.

Welsh assisted in the opening of Perlé and hasn’t looked back. The opportunist returned to the high-volume nightlife scene to construct craft cocktails with a Champagne spin, unique to the Pittsburgh bar scene.

Pop, Fiz z , C link! 1. “ We use a wine sealer to keep our Champagne fresh, especially because we do about 13 to 14 bottles by the glass. It puts CO2 back into the bottle. They’re able to hold a lot longer than they would without.” 2. “ A lot of our cocktails on our specialty Champagne list have a lot of fresh juices in them. We constantly use a juicer to make those drinks.” 3. “We have a lot of requests for Old Fashioneds and Manhattans, and when it comes to whiskey, I prefer not shaking it, but stirring it.” 4. “ We use the filter hand-in-hand with the juicer to remove some of the larger particles, like lemon and lime seeds. In conjunction, we use the peel for zesting.” 5. “ The jigger is really a basic tool, but I’m really big into using them. I believe in getting the recipes down. If you have something a little off, it’s going to throw the entire drink off. Whenever I am making a cocktail, I like to use the jigger every time.” 6. “ Since we do a lot of whiskey-based cocktails, we use a lot of bitters. We also make some in-house — this winter, we did a cranberry-orange-cinnamon bitters. His mini-series masterpiece Feasting on Asphalt pounds the pavement, touring viewers of food on the road. Brown travels by sea on the show’s spin-off Feasting on Waves. You’ve seen the humorous host as a mentor and judge of The Next Food Network Star; on Travel Channel’s The Layover, where he escorts Anthony Bourdain through Atlanta, Brown’s hometown; and on commercials for Welch’s grape juice. ne of the most stressful days of my life was the day I bought my first brand new car. I must note that I went into the dealership with my brother and sister, and all three of us wanted to give them our less-than-perfect used cars and leave with shiny new ones. While I know our family plan made things a little complicated, the constant negotiation of it all was exhausting. He’d offer a price. We’d offer a price. He’d talk to the manager. We’d try to hold our own. By the end of it all, I felt drained — and very glad I had some time before I had to experience that again. “For far too long, the auto industry has allowed aggressive sales tactics to turn what should be an enjoyable event into a frustrating experience,” says Rob Cochran, president and CEO of #1 Cochran. According to Cochran, the lack of trust created by those tactics affects even the best dealers. “Because consumers tend to distrust car dealers, even those of us who offer great prices find that some customers don’t have enough confidence in those prices to make the purchase without shopping around first. So, we decided to clear the air and build an entirely new business model based on transparency in pricing.” Four years ago, #1 Cochran started planning the Clearly Better Car Buying concept. Red CARpet Charity Preview Gala On the eve of the Auto Show, the Greater Pittsburgh Automobile Dealers Foundation will host this year’s Red CARpet Charity Preview Gala at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center. Mario and Nathalie Lemieux will host the February 13 gala, which offers guests a sneak peek at the Pittsburgh International Auto Show’s hottest cars, Champagne, hors d’oeuvres, drink tickets, a strolling dinner, and entertainment. Comprehensive Care After practicing oncology at UPMC for six years, Dr. Lanie Francis, hematologist/ medical oncologist at UPMC Hillman CancerCenter, started gaining interest in integrating mind-body practices with traditional cancer care. So did her patients. “I find that more and more patients are asking about this,” Dr. Francis says. “If they’re newly diagnosed, they ask what to eat. Then, they ask for help with pain or fatigue without taking pills.” The standard treatments are important for patients, but supplementing with holistic practices like yoga, meditation, acupuncture, or music therapy helps boost moods and lower stress. Even gentle stretching can ease discomforting symptoms. With so many of her patients doing their own research on integrative oncology, Dr. Francis organized the first Hillman Cancer Center Wellness Fair in October 2013 to reach a larger audience. More than 100 patients and UPMC Hillman Cancer Center staff met with representatives in areas from skin care and massage therapy, to nutrition and Reiki. “We’re trying to create a care plan for patients where they work on the therapies we suggest, and we follow through and supervise in a safe environment,” Dr. Francis says. “To me, that loop is very important, and what patients want and respond to.” Moving forward with her plan, Dr. Francis started Integrative Oncology Lecture Series: Making Wellness a Reality. She says, “He was visiting from New York City that weekend, and our paths were lucky enough to have crossed. It’s funny because I almost didn’t go to the party that day, but I’m so glad that I did!” The pair dated for four years prior to Matt’s surprise proposal. He popped the question the night before the couple’s summer kickoff party at their home in Philadelphia. “It was so much fun to celebrate with the people who meant the most to us and priceless to see the looks on their faces when we shared our great news!” she says. They returned to Jaime’s hometown for their wedding at Saint Mary of the Mount Parish, where they exchanged vows in front of 170 friends and family members. “Following the ceremony, Matt and I were able to steal a few moments to enjoy the view and take it all in. Standing atop Mt. Washington, we truly felt like we were on top of the world. We couldn’t have been more excited to start our life together,” says Jaime. The reception inside the Carnegie Music Hall foyer exuded classic elegance in every detail. Drawing inspiration from the Champagne, gold, and sea foam color palette of the museum’s gilded Baroque ceiling; the green marble pillars; and the museum’s art collection, the duo opted to decorate with metallic gold mercury glass votives and escort cards painted in the Impressionist style, placed on wooden easels. Jamie says, “Matt’s guests visiting from Philadelphia loved experiencing this Pittsburgh tradition firsthand.”

Ashley says, “We walked around campus for hours one day, sharing stories about each other’s families and friends, and learning more about each other. It was the start of an incredible friendship and love.” They shared six years together leading up to Jeff’s proposal along the North Shore Riverwalk near PNC Park. “After taking pictures of the beautiful city all lit up and its glowing reflection on the river, he wanted to take a picture of the two of us together. While we were waiting for the timer to go off, I looked over and Jeff had gotten down on one knee!” Nearly one year later, Ashley and Jeff

celebrated their union with a reception for 180 guests at South Hills Country Club and a ceremony prior at St. Anne Catholic Church in Castle Shannon, where Jeff went to grade school and currently coaches basketball. The duo’s favorite memory of the big day was walking out of the church as husband and wife into a sea of friends blowing bubbles, cheering, and showering their love all around them.

The eventful day included sightseeing at the Golden Gate Bridge, Pier 39, and Sausalito, Calif., sailing on the bay, and a trek through Muir Woods National Monument to see the famous redwood forest. Kelly says, “He and I were walking along one of the trails, and we stopped to read about the trees on one of the trail markers. While I was looking at the board he said, ‘Hey, check out this tree!’ When I turned around, he had the ring box open!” The pair, who first met in seventh grade at Harrison Middle School, wed at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Roman Catholic Church in Whitehall, where Kelly attended Mass growing up. “H

ello, this is Bernadette Peters calling.” In just six words, the ginger-haired vixen put me at ease with her soft, sultry tone — a signature characteristic that complements her coiled coif. The icon’s career, spanning five decades, needs no introduction. And, as she spoke, her incalculable roster of performances and portrayals resonated with me: Annie Get Your Gun, The Carol Burnett Show, Cinderella, The Jerk, Into The Woods, Pennies From Heaven, Pink Cadillac, the list goes on...and on. The three-time Tony Award winner recently starred in Stephen Sondheim and Wynton Marsalis’ A Bed and a Chair: A New York Love Affair and appeared on NBC’s hit show SMASH. A vested children’s book author, Peters is writing her tertiary publication — this one about her new dog, Charlie. Her book proceeds benefit Broadway Barks, an organization she co-founded with Mary Tyler Moore that supports more than 27 New York City animal shelters. With a résumé as voluminous as her luxe locks, the chanteuse finds harmony in her versatile schedule. “The thing about being an actress and a performer is that your life is never the same,” she says.

“Every morning, I’m up at 9 a.m. to get Charlie ready for the dog walker to go play with other dogs, then I usually go down to the gym in the building. Basically, everything is up for grabs unless I’m in a show in New York, then I have a very definite schedule. I vocalize, I leave for the theater around 4:30 p.m., I have sushi, I vocalize again, then I get quiet and focus on the show. I like to think about why we’re all there and what we’re trying to make happen. It’s pretty wonderful.” Peters will pop into Carnegie Music Hall on February 22 for a sizzling performance as part of The Equality Gayla: An Evening with Bernadette Peters, benefiting the Delta Foundation of Pittsburgh. “I’ve always been a supporter of the LGBT community,” she says. “I think it’s important for young people and their parents to not feel like outsiders. It’s working into our social network, and it’s a great thing.” Aside from her 2014 concert lineup, Peters says she plans to focus on how she can best help people and animals.
