How do you stop James Conner? Not with a linebacker. Not with a legion of defenders. And not even with a life-threatening blood cancer called Hodgkin’s lymphoma. That’s because James chose UPMC Hillman Cancer Center, where all patients — from star athletes to your next-door neighbor — get innovative, customized treatment and compassionate care. Under the care of Dr. Stanley Marks and a dedicated team of experts, James got back on the field, where today he’s cancer-free and fulfilling his lifelong dream of playing for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Learn about the care that made James #unstoppable at UPMCHillman.com/James.

/ REPORT Steve Tanzilli, J.D., dean of the Rowland School of Business at Point Park University

POINT PARK UNIVERSITY’S ROWLAND SCHOOL OF BUSINESS IMMERSES STUDENTS IN THE LOCAL WORKPLACE F

or new graduates, landing a job is just the first step in learning how to function in the workplace. At the same time, companies need new hires who are ready to be productive team members. That’s why Point Park University’s Rowland School of Business in Downtown Pittsburgh prepares students by immersing them in local workplaces as a major part of their educational experience. Established as a small business training college in 1960, the school is now nationally accredited, offering two master’s and eight bachelor’s degree programs.

The school’s Dean, Stephen Tanzilli, explained that students get long-term experience in the workplace, including shadowing (observing an employee in the student’s desired industry), internships, co-ops (paid full-time positions for school credit), and networking. Tanzilli, a former sports agent, was named Dean in 2017 and has been with Rowland Business School for 15 years, having developed and run their sports, arts, and entertainment management program. Since becoming dean, he has worked to foster partnerships with area companies that help prepare work-ready graduates.

One of those companies is Huntington Bank, who participates in the school’s internship and co-op programs and has also established a scholarship to the school’s Emerging Leaders program. “Huntington is strongly committed to helping businesses thrive. And our partnership with leading organizations like Point Park University is a great way to enhance that commitment,” says Rusty Rhodes, senior vice president and business banking area manager. Rhodes worked closely with colleges and interns throughout his career. “One of the things that attracted me to the company was that Huntington does exceptionally well at serving a company from its creation through its entire lifecycle. We’re currently third in the country for providing government-backed SBA loans, and we can grow with a company the entire way from start-up to the achievement of its ultimate exit strategy,” he continues. “Among a company’s top challenges is acquiring, developing, and rewarding talent,” says Rhodes. “One of the ways we can help develop local talent is through supporting the work of institutions like the Rowland Business School, who does such a great job developing local talent and preparing their students for real-world business,” Rhodes says. Tanzilli noted that the majority of the school’s co-op students are hired by the company they worked for, or one in a related field. Students have been placed locally, regionally, and nationwide.

Developing Local Talent

WE STARTED GOING LOCAL BEFORE IT WAS TRENDY. ABOUT 150 YEARS AGO. At Huntington, we make it a point to work with those who move our community forward. As the #1 SBA lender in our region, we're proud to support local businesses and their efforts to make a difference right here in our neighborhood.

The Rowland School of Business faculty are experienced teachers who have either worked in or run successful businesses, so they can impart practical industry information to their students. Recent hires include: • Jayne Olshanski from Waynesburg University, sales and accounting • Jeff Seaman from BNY Mellon, software development • Dorene Ciletti from Duquesne University, comprehensive sales and marketing Similarly, Huntington has expanded their business banking team: • Kim Powell was named Senior Vice President and Market Manager, leading Huntington’s team that serves $1mm - $10mm business. She has deep financial services background and broad industry knowledge. • Justin Gatten was hired as a senior business banking relationship manager. He has a successful track record of helping local business succeed. Huntington is the #1 SBA 7(a) lender in the region made up of Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Michigan, West Virginia and Western PA. Dr. Stanley M. Marks

HOW WAS CONNER’S CANCER DISCOVERED? James was referred to me after a biopsy of an enlarged lymph node in his neck revealed Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. His symptoms included night sweats, fatigue, and swelling of the face, neck, and upper chest, particularly when lifting weights and physically exerting himself. Such swelling was attributable to the pressure of the tumor on his veins and heart. Secondary to his Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, he presented with a huge mass in his chest. The mass literally was pressing on his heart. Because he was a high performing Division I athlete and in such peak physical condition, his symptoms were not as quickly recognized as they may have been with someone else. This was a very serious situation and, if left untreated, could have been fatal. Fortunately, he responded to treatment very quickly.

WHAT KIND OF A TREATMENT PLAN DID YOU IMPLEMENT? The first line of treatment was to reduce the mass in his chest and we did that by starting with steroids and blood thinners. Shortly thereafter, James was able to begin chemotherapy, a regimen of 12 chemotherapy treatments over a 6-month period. During his treatments at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center, he wanted to be in the general treatment area with other patients, affording him an opportunity to offer encouragement and support to fellow cancer patients. His lionhearted and collegial approach to fighting the disease and related treatment galvanized other patients to think optimistically. He’s really an unbelievable human being. WHAT ARE THE THINGS YOU ARE ENCOURAGING CONNER TO DO TO MAINTAIN HIS HEALTH, ESPECIALLY AS A YOUNG PROFESSIONAL ATHLETE? 46

While a survivor, James is not different than any other professional athlete from a health and fitness perspective. He is in great shape, demonstrating that right now on the football field with the Pittsburgh Steelers. When he started treatment, at the outset, my team and I did tell him he had to limit his weightlifting and work outs. While he did have some initial fatigue, he continued to participate in the team drills at Pitt. Wearing a surgical mask to prevent any infection, he worked out with his teammates and did whatever they were doing at the time. I have to say, watching James in his first NFL start and scoring his first touchdown was quite emotional for me. I am so proud of him as a person and a true fighter. I am proud to call him a friend.

WHAT ARE THE WAYS FOR PEOPLE TO SUPPORT THE CANCER PROGRAMS, FINANCIALLY, VOLUNTEERING, RAISING AWARENESS?

There are many ways that people can get involved in the fight against cancer: volunteering at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center, making financial contributions to cancer research, raising awareness within the community, and participating in events such as walks, golf outings, and galas. MARTY GRIFFIN USES HIS CANCER DIAGNOSIS TO HELP OTHER FAMILIES PREVENT THE DISEASE BY KRISTINE SORENSEN GRIFFIN PHOTOGRAPHS FROM KRISTINE SORENSEN GRIFFIN

KDKA-TV ANCHOR KRISTINE SORENSEN SHARES THE STORY OF THE JOURNEY SHE AND HER HUSBAND, MARTY GRIFFIN, ARE TAKING.

I

never thought I would spend my son’s 8th birthday at the offices of my husband’s cancer surgeon and chemo and radiation doctors. It was August 3, 2018. I listened in shock as the doctors told us how my husband, Marty Griffin, has cancer triggered by HPV (human papillomavirus) in his tonsil and the base of his tongue. The doctors gave us the good news first: the standard treatment is successful in 90 to 95% of people with this type of cancer. The bad news: the tonsillectomy and sevenweek radiation and chemo treatments are rough on the

48

body and can cause some longterm challenges. Several days and many prayers later, I came up with a mantra to get me through this ordeal, harnessing the spirit of Marty’s Mom and Dad, who both passed away in the last two years: We will get through this together. By together, I mean with the help of our family, friends, faith, colleagues, community and our incredible medical team. We are so blessed to have this much support. Many people know Marty for his KDKA-AM Radio show and his “Get Marty” consumer stories on KDKA-TV. He has

helped hundreds of people in need with everything from a stair lift, to a new roof, to a new house. He got his diagnosis just as he is launching his own new company and website, Sparkt.com, with the mission to expand on all the good he was able to do through TV and to motivate people to take action to do good themselves. At first, we thought, how could this be happening now, just as we are embarking on something new and exciting? Then Marty realized his journey is exactly what Sparkt is about: telling stories of hope and inspiring people to take action. With that in mind, we decided

W HI R L / OCT OBE R 2 0 1 8

together to use Marty’s story to spread the word about the HPV vaccine. This simple, safe vaccine can prevent the cancer he has, as well as cervical and other cancers in women and men. The vaccine came out in 2006, so it’s too late for our generation, but Marty and I want to show what’s happening to him so that parents know what can happen to their children if they are not vaccinated. Sadly, more than half of adolescents ages 13-17 do not have the full HPV vaccine, according to the Centers for Disease Control’s statistics from 2017. HPV-related cancer in men

is becoming more and more common. In 2015, 33,700 cases were diagnosed. In women, we have the Pap smear to detect cervical cancer caused by HPV, but there is no such test for men’s HPV cancers. As parents, we have difficult choices to make about our children’s health and many other issues. Marty and I hope you will take the time to read credible information about the HPV vaccine if your children are between the vaccine-eligible ages of 9 to 26. You can find reliable information at Sparkt. com/MartysJourney where Marty is sharing his journey through treatment in live

videos and providing links to accurate information about HPV and the vaccine. Since Marty started sharing his story, people all around the region are already telling us they are getting their children vaccinated when they otherwise wouldn’t have. That means cancers are being prevented and lives could be saved. Each time we hear one of these stories, I am so grateful for the platform we have been given, despite the challenges we face ahead. Out of something bad, always comes something good. I just never thought we would see the good so soon.

fter 28 months of construction, the painstaking deconstruction and reconstruction of three historic facades, and the unprecedented restoration of a 22 stained glass-paneled ceiling from Pittsburgh’s historic Stock Exchange Building, the gleaming new Pittsburgh Playhouse is ready for its close-up. Pittsburgh Playhouse at Point Park University officially opens its doors on Thursday, October 11 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony for University trustees, civic and community leaders. On Saturday, October 13, the Pittsburgh Playhouse hosts a ticketed gala event that will include an elegant reception, performance, dinner and dancing. A 90,411-square-foot theater complex, the Pittsburgh Playhouse features a total of 91 rooms including a magnificent lobby space that boasts a three 50

story wide-open space with natural light, a grand staircase and tucked-in spaces for students to lounge and gather; the 550-seat PNC Theatre whose backstage and inner workings are visible from the street, resulting in an intentional glimpse into performing arts classes; the main floor which includes an enormous paint shop, a 2,738-square-foot soundstage three stories high, a 15-foot-high catwalk and 24-foot-high ceilings to provide professional-level learning opportunities to students in multiple disciplines, including cinematography, audio work, lighting work and aesthetics. The new Pittsburgh Playhouse was designed to be a learning laboratory for all Point Park students, not just those enrolled in the University’s prestigious Conservatory for the Performing Arts. Students from across the academic community will have experiential learning opportunities that include

aspects of producing, marketing, management, ticketing and programming. In addition, the Playhouse will collaborate with the University’s Rowland School of Business and Center for Media Innovation on events, lectures and related programming. “This is a unique component of the new Playhouse and was a key driver in its design and mission. We believe the crossdisciplinary opportunities it will provide students will be unrivaled in our region,” said Hennigan. For Pittsburgh’s Downtown economy and community, having another exceptional cultural attraction in the Central Business District will continue to help drive visitors to the area. Allowing for passersby to see the main stage area of the Playhouse from the street will help connect community to students and encourage everyone to feel a part of the creative process. Theatergoers can enjoy the indoor and outdoor seating at the Pittsburgh Playhouse Café and view upclose the larger-than-life restored facades of the

Royal, Goettman and Palace buildings. “For decades, many of our students, faculty and staff have been separated from the rest of the Academic Village in Oakland,” said Hennigan. “Now everyone will be part of the greater academic community and have an opportunity to be inspired by the energy, vitality and pace of Downtown Pittsburgh. It’s a new beginning and we’re thrilled to finally get started.”

or many Pittsburghers, the “In” colors each season are Black and Gold. A new team in town is looking to change that: fashion designer Bradford Mumpower and creative duo Jessica Lane and Juan Carlos Silva. This team became acquainted with each other’s work on Facebook and Instagram shortly before they met at a Pittsburgh fashion industry meet-up and realized they shared a philosophy and desire to bring national attention to the Pittsburgh

scene. Two photoshoots and one outof-town fashion show later, and the trio moved in together at the Ice House Studios in Lawrenceville. Juan Carlos Silva, a native Venezuelan, moved to Pittsburgh in 2013 after waiting 17 years for his green card. Silva was a wedding and fashion photographer in Barquisimeto, Venezuela, a city three times the size of Pittsburgh. After six months of manning

his own booths at bridal shows and getting no work, Silva was ready to hang up his camera and took a job washing dishes at Franco’s in Aspinwall. He had worked his way up to cook when Franco’s closed in 2016. Jessica Lane began her makeup career at 13 when she started doing the makeup for Harrison Middle School’s theatrical productions. This was before the age of YouTube, so Lane taught herself by

studying Cosmopolitan and replicating those techniques. After high school, she attended Empire Beauty School and received her cosmetology license. She got married and took five years off to start a family. Wanting to get back in to the business of makeup, Lane started to seek out opportunities. Through a series of fortunate events and $50 of dollar store makeup, Lane landed her first bridal makeup job. Looking to gain more experience and exposure, Lane began contacting photographers on Facebook, offering her services to amateur models and photographers. Working as a massage therapist since 1999, Bradford Mumpower brought his understanding of the body when he emerged onto the fashion scene in 2014, showing his first collection at Pittsburgh Fashion Week. Mumpower learned to sew at Cut and Sew Studios, now in Morningside, and taught himself pattern making on craftsy.com. Prints and bright colors have been the calling cards of his collections, often using Dutch or African wax prints in unexpected ways. Unconventional materials have also been a draw for Mumpower and he’s won multiple local fashion design competitions using materials such as garbage bags, maps, plumb line and icicles. The earlier beginnings of this team started in 2016; Silva realized he could not abandon his dream to be a photographer in Pittsburgh. He began shooting with local models to continue WH I R LM A G A Z I N E .C OM / WH IRL

building his portfolio and hone his skills. He had developed a small following in the city and while on a photoshoot met Lane, who was doing the make up. This chance meeting was the beginning of a fantastic collaboration. Working together, they created a one-stop shop for models with Lane doing hair and makeup and Silva taking the images and doing all post-production. An opportunity developed to create comp cards, a marketing tool akin to business cards

for models, showing the latest and best of their portfolio. Model Society Elite was created to provide portfolios, education and support for aspiring models. To complete the team, they decided they wanted to collaborate with a local designer. After seeing Mumpower’s first solo fashion show in January of this year at the Ace Hotel, they decided to join forces. They believe the best way to communicate as artists is often through images, not words, and work began

on a photoshoot to capture what this partnership wanted to do. Creating a team of all local talent, they recruited models to help realize their vision. This photoshoot aims to bring largerthan-life heroines to the page. Strong women emerge from the smoke, armed with fashion and beauty to bring vibrant color and life to a black and gold world. This is a glimpse of what they believe can be cultivated in the Pittsburgh fashion scene. Grab a seat, and watch..

ong gone are the days of sleepaway camp where teens spent weeks away from their parents in the woods “building character” and learning “survival skills”. But this summer, La Pomponnee Beauty Artisans brought the idea back and gave it a modern spin. Summer Camp, meet Spa Day. Aimed at teens ages 12-15, Teen Spa Camp 2K18 was a 4-week series of hands-on beauty and wellness training held at La Pomponnee’s Mount Lebanon salon location. Lead by Louise Pittavino, La Pomponnee’s resident makeup artist and a 20+ year beauty industry veteran, the workshops were inspired by Louise’s days teaching personal development to teen models in Charleston, SC. During their formidable years, teens can be intimidated by or nonchalant about things like skin care, makeup, stress management, and personal wellness, which could affect their overall physical and mental growth and development. But Louise says, “If they understand at a young age…it’ll stay with them for years to come.” Hoping to shape the next generation, Louise designed weekly courses focused on organic skin and body care using all-natural AVEDA products and simple makeup application to highlight their best features. Segments on yoga stretches, deep breathing, and stress management taught the class that the inside is just as important as the outside and it must be cared for as well. There was even a class on hair braiding that covered all of the modern styles, like fishtail and mermaid. Attendees were treated to one-on-one instruction on body and beauty basics, and after completion of the camp, they received a certificate and a bag of products to keep them on their personal care journey. Although shy and quiet at first, by the end of the camp, the girls were connecting, laughing, and enjoying each other and all they had learned. The camp was mom-approved too; they said their daughters loved coming each week! Back to school season is fast approaching and we’re certain these ladies will start the school year feeling confident and naturally beautiful, thanks to how they spend their summer. CINDY ENGLER CINDYENGLER.COM Cindy Engler is an artist from Pittsburgh Pennsylvania who studied Fashion Illustration at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. Her love of style and expressions led to a successful career as a fashion and photographic model at a young age. For the past 7 years, she has combined art and fashion in new ways by creating oil paintings in a style that is truly her own. She utilizes various techniques of layering and scratching through paint to form texture and add dimension to her work. Most recently she has completed a series of oil paintings that depict high spirited, sensual women with an undeniable sense of style. In addition to oil painting, Cindy works with shattered safety glass to build three dimensional mosaics and encaustic paint to produce multi layered dreamlike paintings.

Bridge to the Our

Ocean BY SHIVANI GOSAI

fter working at multiple restaurants, I can truly say I’ve never seen one perform and operate the way Umi, a traditional Japanese sushi restaurant in Shadyside, has with such precision and care. A great dining experience is more than just exquisite food and drink; it is ultimately carried out by service done with passion.

A

64

Larry Bridge is the epitome of Umi’s ambition, and is someone who considers his job much more than waiting tables. Bridge has been serving at Umi for 13 years, and sincerely loves his job. Because of his enthusiasm, attention to detail and hospitality, patrons at Umi have fallen for him as well. From previously working at

Eleven, Bridge knew the Big Burrito franchise took fine dining seriously — and he instantly fell in love with Umi in 2005. “It’s a family relationship up at Umi. […] Very thankful of how they [Big Burrito] take care of their employees and their company,” says Bridge. Regulars at the restaurant have been coming back

for years to have a seat at Larry’s table. It’s amazing to watch how, every night, customers enter and greet him as though he is part of their family. And when they leave, they offer him a hug and sincere thank you, leaving more than satisfied. The impact Bridge has had on Umi’s customers is unparalleled. “I like to build relationships with people, especially at Umi because it’s a special spot, like people come up there not just for dinner

52-75_Kiya_Bradford_TeenSpaC_ART_UMI_Travel_Osteo.indd 65

— they come there for an experience. And that’s what I like to provide,” said Bridge. Fine dining does not have to be serious and strict. In fact, Bridge is probably the complete opposite. He wants his customers to be entertained during their evening at Umi because his job is fun for him as well. Bridge is most often laughing and joking with his tables, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t efficient when it comes down to taking care of them. There are not many servers

that are credited for the hard work they do. And not many customers can say that their server has changed the way they dine. When it comes to taking care of those at his table, Bridge would ideally prefer to have his customers put their fate in him for the night, “I love when people put their trust in me. […] Just providing a meal that they don’t have to think about, there’s so many different things on the menu and people sometimes get a little intimidated […] They

9/19/18 3:47 PM

don’t have to make a decision on what to get because I did it for them, and that’s the most satisfying to me, when they trust me to make their meal and at the end of the night they say “That was amazing”.” Having a diligent server who has expert knowledge of the menu can offer a rare and exciting dining experience. Of course, Bridge acknowledges

52-75_Kiya_Bradford_TeenSpaC_ART_UMI_Travel_Osteo.indd 66

that his love for the job wouldn’t be possible without Umi’s executive chef Mr. Shu and his talent on producing incredible dishes: “You can’t get any food like that anywhere in Pittsburgh. To know you work in a special place like that — it brings a sense of pride”. ———

Here’s what Bridge recommends for those new to Umi: For people who don’t enjoy sushi or sashimi, (although Bridge heavily insists on trying some and will do his best to convince you) he recommends the teriyaki steak or chicken, or the miso Black cod. Bridges absolute favorites on the menu include the special Scallop sashimi, the Sawara with garlic

9/19/18 3:48 PM

and ponzu, and the Red snapper with truffle oil. ——— A majority of those in the restaurant industry are overlooked for the job they do. Not everyone can spend hours on their feet to make sure their customer is content and comfortable. I’m happy to recognize my co-worker

as one of the best, because he goes above and beyond to give his customers an experience unique to Umi. The people who truly care, are always successful. umi Japanese Restaurant, 5849 Ellsworth Ave, Pittsburgh. 412.362.6198. bigburrito.com/umi/

parties know they are in control of their own dreams here. On the day of our visit, I watched a young couple arrive and begin their preparations. They carried their separate luggage into two different buildings-he into the gentleman’s cigarfriendly house, and she, with her wedding gown slung over her shoulders, into the stately Victorian home with the huge family-sized kitchen and luxurious baths. They then carried their poles and hangings to the “Wedding Tree”, where they also laid out a large ornamental rug for the

ceremonial space. After that, they went to the huge saloon to choose a spot for the piano they were having delivered. The rehearsal dinner, guests, and planners were all staying on the ranch for five days of preparations, celebrating, and honoring the bride and groom. Derek’s eyes twinkled as we watched the couple establish their romantic overlay to the ranch. “This is just what I wanted to happen. For people to feel at home in a special place, to make special memories.”

amela and Matthew Wolff made a decision in early 2018, that it was time for a change in their lives. Pamela was on the road every week as her corporate hospitality position required. With their three daughters out of the house and living in DC and New York, Matt kept the home fires burning solo most of the time. They were missing each other and felt they were missing out on a truly rewarding and significant time of life. Then there was the loss of both of Pamela’s parents, her father in November of 2016 and her mother this past January. “Losing your parents is a wake up call for most people I think” she says. Matthew continues “We knew it was time to do something else. While working in broadcast television was very rewarding, it was a lifestyle that kept us apart.” Matthew has been a producer and cameraman for over 30 years. “It’s funny, if you are open to it, life, fate, God will show you a path. Without even knowing what we were looking for, we found our opportunity. We knew what we wanted to achieve: more time at home, a business that would not only be successful financially but also bring something of value to our community. Something that could change lives, ours and others’.” What they found was OsteoStrong a new technology

74

I think most people reach a point in mid-life where they want more… and less. More quality time with family, less time at work; more healthy eating, less stress; more focus on community and less on self - Pamela Wolff

that offers impact emulation, or osteogenic loading. Billed as the ultimate biohack; by health guru Dave Asprey of Bulletproof Radio, osteogenic loading triggers growth in bone and muscle density and users range from elite althelets to deconditioned seniors. As a woman, Pamela knew bone health was something to be concerned about, especially after watching her grandmother and mother suffer bone injuries that were life-changing and in her beloved grandmother’s case, life ending. “And then I found out that I have osteopenia. What a shock! I thought I was invincible! I was determined that I would not suffer the same fate.” Pamela had been diagnosed with Osteopenia after yet another broken bone. Over the last two decades she had broken both of her arms, roller skating and sled riding, fractured her shoulder skiing, and finally experienced a hairline crack in her acetabular, the bone that covers the hip after a fall while playing with a new puppy. Matthew was worried. “Pamela is the rock of this family. I was very worried about her long term health. Especially for someone as active as she is.” They discovered OsteoStrong and their research led them not only to a solution for Pamela but a real mission. “Once we discovered OsteoStrong and experienced first hand it’s many beneficial results, we knew we had to share it with the community that we consider home, despite moving away from Pittsburgh 25 years ago” says Pam. OsteoStrong presented the perfect opportunity for the couple to return to a vibrant Pittsburgh with a technology worthy of the city’s current reputation as a hub for all things cutting edge, in particularly the medical and technology fields. As a former sales and marketing executive, Pamela is excited to build awareness and understanding of this technology especially with those members of the community who can benefit in significant and impactful ways. Matthew Wolff spent a good deal of his video career around professional athletes as a professional videographer. At countless

games Matt witnessed injuries and at press conferences and interviews, he heard athletes discuss recovery, performance and retirement. He knew the dedication they had and how driven they were to push performance levels, but he saw frustration too. Matt immediately recognized the benefits that OsteoStrong could bring to both athletes and the many active adults for whom fitness and performance are key drivers. Matt would like to extend a personal invitation to both elite and amateur athletes to come see first-hand what 10 minutes a week can accomplish. Matt was born and raised in Squirrel Hill and is excited to be opening this location less than 2 miles from his childhood home. Matt explains, “This technology can mean so much to so many. From those who need it to maintain their quality of life and their independence, to those who want to drive physical performance to new and previously unattainable levels.” And from a personal standpoint, I know first hand how thinning bones can be overlooked in a person younger than 50 or 60 even.” warns Pamela. Matt and Pamela Wolff are excited to bring to the city of Pittsburgh, Osteostrong, an exciting new health and wellness franchise that delivers skeletal conditioning to people of all ages and levels of physical ability. Osteostrong delivers a patented technology for osteogenic loading, a triggering event that stimulates a series of health benefits including significant strength gains, improvements in balance and body posture, and perhaps most importantly, osteogenic loading stimulates bone growth, naturally and with a commitment of only 10 minutes per week. The Wolffs and WHIRL want to offer a sneak peak at this amazing technology prior to their official opening at 6125 Spirit Street in Eastside Bond in East Liberty. Opening Oct 1, WHIRL is proud to host this pop-up location at their One WHIRL Studio in Lawrenceville. Visit osteostrongpittsburgheast.com or call 412.365.5667 for more information.

Emily and Evan have many friends from all walks of life, so they had to have a huge bridal party. “It was overwhelming but awesome to be surrounded by that many close friends,” Emily exclaims.

“ Our biggest goal was to celebrate our new marriage with all the people we love in the most fun way

possible. We accomplished that goal with a full dance floor the whole night. We started off the night surprising our guests with a choreographed dance to a mix of songs including Billy Joel’s ‘Longest Time,’ Nat King Cole’s ‘L-O-V-E’, and Elvis’ ‘Can’t Help Falling in Love with You.’ It was a romantic, fun, and carefree night surrounded by our friends and family that we will never forget.” — Emily The couple’s cake was made by a close friend, and the groom's cake was three tiers of his favorite hockey teams.

FARE THEE WELL

When news that Mac Miller had not woken up the morning of September 7 in his California home reached Pittsburgh, people reacted with shock and sadness. The huge billboards for his newly released collection of music, Swimming, portrayed the iconically eyebrowed musician collapsed on a sofa, with one blue eye open wide. What could have been read as a louche statement prior his tragic passing now seemed like unfinished business. Miller’s talent was clear, his family support was strong, and his work ethic was beyond his years. His delivery and sway was humourous and quick-witted, and his Blue Slide Park homage made everyone who ever hung out in Frick Park smile. For someone who stood in the spotlight, Miller’s favorite thing was to turn the attention to anyone else around him, usually in a joking way to bring laughter in the situation. Another of his trademark moves in private was to gaze at his shoes. it brought him back to himself, a way to stay grounded. The quality of his musicianship was exploding with dips into jazz and dives into blues, collaborating with some of the biggest artists performing today. Miller was on that trajectory. We hope that his music lives on, and that anyone struggling with substance abuse and other mental health issues will reach out for help.
