/ PAGE HEALTH FULL We have seen Pittsburgh transform over the past several years into a healthy lifestyle city. Despite what some may think, particularly those who have never been here, we are not a smoky city awaiting the return of steel and coal while sitting on our sofas watching reruns of old sitcoms.

“Prove it,” some say. We don’t see what you see. Come to the 6th One WHIRL Yoga Fest + Healthy Lifestyle Expo at Point State Park from 6 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday, JULY 22. There will be 28 classes of yoga, barre, Pilates, and more for everyone to try, taught by our yoga ambassadors. These incredibly dedicated people make community wellbeing their focal point, so to be on the hallowed state park ground near the fountain resonates as an earthly link to the healing power of mindfulness, friendship, and the joy of practicing outdoors in nature. We are staying outdoors with our Outdoor Dining Guide, starting on page 28. As the dining scene in our neighborhoods continues to grow and flourish, take a page from our magazine and venture outdoors. Maybe you will find yourself in Oakmont. Check out our special feature on this iconic neighborhood and see why so many of us love spending time there for retail, restaurants, and world-class golf! HERE’S TO A PEACEFUL SUMMER!

LET’S TALK ABOUT LOVE More importantly, let’s talk about how much we love Paige Davis! No stranger to the stage, the vibrant songstress discovered her passion for performing at a young age. “My initial passion was gymnastics and I competed at the state level when I was 13, but quickly realized dance was my truest passion,” Davis says. “It became my mission and my dream to dance on Broadway. My journey to that goal was simply progressions up the rungs of the ladder. I started in summer stock, moved up to regional theater, then booked a national tour, then hit the ol’ Broadway. Television came much later.” The television work she’s most known for is hosting TLC’s “Trading Spaces” for nearly 10 seasons. THROUGH AUGUST 11, she’ll return to Pittsburgh — where her family lives and where her husband, Patrick Page, starred in Pittsburgh CLO’s A Musical Christmas Carol in December 2016 — to play the lead in CLO Cabaret’s Miss Abigail’s Guide to Dating, Mating & Marriage. Miss Abigail is the most indemand relationship expert to the stars, dishing out advice on everything from perfecting your first kiss to securing a second date. We chatted with Miss Paige about her upcoming role and her time in Pittsburgh.

WE’RE SO EXCITED YOU'LL BE A PART OF THE CLO CABARET'S MISS ABIGAIL'S GUIDE TO DATING, MATING & MARRIAGE THIS SUMMER! HOW DID THIS OPPORTUNITY COME TO BE?

WHAT DO YOU HOPE AUDIENCE MEMBERS TAKE AWAY FROM THE SHOW? PD: Life is short. Love is precious. Don't be afraid to take chances.

Paige Davis: Pittsburgh CLO’s Lori Berger and Mark Fleischer invited me to play the role. I was very flattered.

ARE YOU EXCITED TO BE IN PITTSBURGH THIS SUMMER? HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR CHARACTER? PD: A strong, smart, generous soul who sees the romantic potential in all encounters. But someone who romanticizes her past so much it keeps her from moving forward in her own life. As a widow, she channels all her grief into helping others. She is tough but vulnerable, and she is innocent.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT THIS ROLE? PD: The audience interaction is what sets this show on fire. A game audience who is willing to play and participate can make all the difference. With a passive audience, the play is still sweet and humorous, but it's not nearly as much fun or as memorable or as elevated.

20

18-31_Cal_Depts_FoodTour.indd 20

PD: Yes, I enjoy Pittsburgh very much. And I am super impressed by how much this city embraces and supports the arts. It's not like this everywhere, especially in mid-size cities like this one. The sheer number of theaters in a five-block radius Downtown is mind-blowing. The city is very alive. And my mom and stepdad live here, too, so I'm getting a nice long visit with them. When my husband (Patrick Page, CLO alum) visits, we'll be sure to hit The Andy Warhol Museum. And I see a jaunt to the casino in our future. Whether I see us winning is anybody's guess [laughs].

SUMMER READING LIST School’s out and leisurely reading is in! Still, we’re finding ourselves reaching for books that bring more than just entertainment to the table. Tuck these page-turners into your beach tote or bring them along on your next road trip for an educational and insightful experience.

“THE SCHENLEY EXPERIMENT”

“THE TEACHER APPEARS”

“FIERCE KINDNESS”

by Jake Oresick

by Brian Leaf, with contributions from Krishna Das, Seane Corn, Jack Kornfield, Sharon Gannon, Shiva Rea, and more

by Melanie Salvatore-August

Study up on the fascinating history of Schenley High School. Established in 1855 as Central High School before adopting its more recognizable name in 1916, the institute set standards in educational and social practices, making headlines up until its closing in 2008. To recount the revolution, Schenley High School alumnus Jake Oresick incorporated historical documents and interviews with those tied to the school for an informative and well-rounded read. “Their stories form this story, of Pittsburgh and its first public high school, where for more than a century and a half they built a community out of difference.” For more information, visit psupress.org.

18-31_Cal_Depts_FoodTour.indd 21

A good companion for any yogi, this interactive read provides cerebral and soulful exercises that supplement a dedicated yoga practice. Throughout the book, we encounter “108 prompts to power your yoga practice.” Each one, contributed by Brian Leaf and other yoga experts, presents an idea to meditate on, an action to carry out in the community, or an activity to complete right on the page. “Infuse and invest its pages with good vibes, until it becomes a talisman of transformation — until, when you see it or hold it, you drop instantly into your heart.” For more information, visit teacherappears.net.

“This book is about how to be an awesome person to yourself and others.” Doesn’t get much better than that! Focusing on how to “be a positive force for change,” this book offers a chance to indulge in selfreflection, broaden our thinking, and learn how to radiate good vibes everywhere we go. It’s a quick read, yet one we keep re-reading, as a daily reminder to consciously make an effort to spread kindness, positivity, and a little sunshine every day. t the root of my progress thus far is my family. They have encouraged, challenged, and reinforced my efforts from day one. Many people are unaware that I once wanted to be a pediatrician. It is pretty humorous to think about now, especially considering that not only do I dislike studying science, I also failed freshman year of college pursuing science courses. I gravitated to medicine because I thought my postcollege options were “doctor, lawyer, or engineer,” despite not having a strong interest in any of those career paths. Still, when I expressed an interest in medicine, my family was behind me. It has been 10 years from that starting point, with multiple ventures and challenges between then and now. It took critical thinking, mentors, and a serious reevaluation of my purpose and assets to navigate these years. And to this day, my family remains my safe space to recharge, my refuge, and my cheering squad. Almost four years ago, I founded Internationally Smart is Cool, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that connects middle school students with opportunities to develop and practice activities that interest them in Wilkinsburg. The organization was born out of my frustration as a classroom teacher in Philadelphia. I observed the gap between standardized testing scores and demonstrative student ability. This led me to the question, “How do we define intelligence?” It formed the basis for redefining smart as a “skill, interest, or hobby used to build communities” instead of simply a letter grade. We continue to critically think about this question and use it to determine future programming, keeping in mind that beginning with an asset-based framework is superior to solely focusing on student deficits. (By the way — save the date! Our third annual Smart Summit is Thursday, OCTOBER 19! If you are interested in collaborating, visit smartiscool.org.)

Outside of Smart Is Cool, I am a community engagement consultant. This is a fancy way of saying I design strategies for organizations seeking to engage marginalized populations. My clients include Duquesne University, the Forbes Funds, AlphaLab Gear, Coro Pittsburgh, and The Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh. It has been a rewarding journey informed by peaks and valleys. I am forever grateful to my mentors and local network of support for challenging me to push my limits and enter new arenas. Among others, YNGBLKPGH benefits three distinct groups living in the region: employers, young black professionals who are transplants to Pittsburgh, and black students. I was recently told that some Pittsburgh-area employers find it difficult to attract and retain qualified black candidates. YNGBLKPGH provides a microcosm of this high-achieving community. If you are a young black transplant to Pittsburgh, the book presents a cross section of fellow young professionals to connect with. This is invaluable, as thriving in Pittsburgh is highly contingent upon your ability to build relationships. The magic of Brian Burley’s vision is the road map it supplies the next generation of young black professionals: black students. Our kids now have more than 100 examples of what is possible for their lives. They have informal mentors they can reach out to, lean on, and learn from. I cannot think of a single more important reason for this body of work to exist. For every one of the features in the book, there are 10 more young black professionals building positive legacies in Pittsburgh. This is just the beginning.

But this doesn’t mean that you need to give up everything and live a life full of pain and misery. We’re social animals and have evolved to experience joy when we connect and care for others. These connections are vital to our mental and physical well-being. Mother Teresa encouraged people to “do small things with great love.” Your every action, from making breakfast for your kids to letting an oncoming car make their Pittsburgh left, can become an act of kindness, love, or service. No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted. A lifetime of service will lead to lasting happiness and fulfillment.

Material items can bring us happiness. Who doesn’t love a new pair of shoes? But it’s a fleeting joy. Experiences can also make us happy; but fun is shortlived. The pursuit of more stuff, pleasure, and novel experiences will ultimately prove unsatisfying. Humans desire lives that have meaning and purpose. However, to live a meaningful life often requires sacrifice of our time, money, comfort, and even temporarily our happiness. Mahatma Gandhi said, “You can’t lead a true life without suffering.”

CELEBRATE

JULY

PHOTOGRAPH FROM KATE KILL

3. Hanumanasana (Full Version) Follow the same steps as the modified version, but without the block. When extending the arms up, feel the joy and celebration of this powerful pose!

2. Hanumanasana (Modified Version) Have a block handy beside your left foot. Move into a forward fold and step your right leg back into a lunge. Lower your back knee down to the floor. As you exhale, straighten your left leg and press your hips back. Slide your left leg forward and place the block underneath the upper thigh to support you. Work with the level of the block that is right for you. Settle into the pose and find your breath. If you are comfortable and stable, extend your arms overhead.

1. Warm Up This pose requires a little preparation. You may want to start out with a couple of Sun Salutations. Your hamstrings need to be warm before you stretch them out. Try a cat balance. Make sure to engage the glutes and use the hamstrings to lift. Move into Warrior 3 on both sides. Your hamstring on your supporting leg will stretch and the extended leg will stay active and strong.

The idea of celebration conjures up images of joy and victory. In ancient mythology, Hanuman is an energy full of strength, power, and determination. The pose, Hanumanasana, reflects this. When we are comfortably established in the pose (or even in a modification of the pose), we feel accomplished and powerful.

All living beings avoid suffering and seek out homeostasis (physiological balance), from the snake laying on a sunny rock to the human turning up the thermostat on a chilly morning. But humans crave more than just physical comfort. We desire happiness.

SKULL-SHINING BREATH (KAPALABHATI PRANAYAMA) Oxygenate your cells, stimulate digestion, and improve circulation with this internal cleansing technique of quick, forceful exhalations and slow, passive inhalations. Note: It’s advisable to learn this practice from an experienced teacher and avoid this during pregnancy.

Repeat this pattern for 5-10 cycles. If you wish, you can explore adding in a pause or breath retention at the top of the inhalations and bottom of the exhalations. Once completed with Nadi Shodhana pranayama, return to long, slow deep breaths through both nostrils until you are ready to release the practice. Gently float the eyes back open, and observe the benefits and sensations you experience.

To practice, begin in a comfortable seated pose and lengthen the spine to sit tall. Gently close the eyes. Allow the left hand to rest in the lap or on the left knee, and create a Vishnu Mudra with your right hand by drawing your pointer and middle finger into the palm leaving the thumb, ring, and pinky fingers extended. Start cultivating a longer inhalation and exhalation through both nostrils until your regular breath feels full, open, and comfortable. Once that happens, gently draw your right hand toward the face. After your next exhalation through both nostrils, complete the following pattern: • Close the right nostril with your thumb and inhale through the left nostril. • Close the left nostril with your ring finger and exhale through the right nostril. • Inhale through the right nostril. • Close the right nostril and exhale through the left nostril. (This is one cycle)

Some of the benefits of this breathing practice result from the balancing and activation of energy (prana) through the Ida and Pingala Nadis and of the breath through the left and right nostrils. The Ida Nadi is associated with the left nostril and moon/cooling energy, and the Pingala Nadi is associated with the right nostril and sun/warming energy. This balancing practice can assist in synchronizing the left and right hemispheres of the brain, improving lung and respiratory function, and supporting the nervous system.

NADI = CHANNEL/FLOW | SHODHANA = PURIFICATION

Nadi Shodhana pranayama is a wonderful practice for the 7th Chakra (Sahaswara) and for anytime you need to reduce stress, increase concentration, and calm and center the mind.

ABDOMINAL CLEANSING (NAULI) This challenging cleansing of the internal organs involves rolling your abdominal muscles up and down, and side to side. Again, watch an online video for specific instructions! Note: Practice on an empty stomach and abstain during pregnancy.

NASAL CLEANSING (JALA NETI) To flush your sinuses, fill a neti pot with warm salt water, turn your head sideways, and insert the spout into your nostril. Practitioners report that it reduces sinus infections, colds, allergies, and snoring. Note: Watch a few online videos so you get the right head angle and make sure you use distilled, filtered water, not tap water.

TONGUE SCRAPING (JIVA SODHANA) In Ayurvedic theory, ama builds-up on our tongues at night and should be removed in the morning using a tongue scraper. Note: In a pinch, you can use your toothbrush and rinse it thoroughly afterwards.

CONCENTRATED GAZING (TRATAKA) This yogic practice invites you to stare at a candle, blinking as infrequently as possible, allowing the eyes to tear up. It is said to strengthen the eyes and diminish insomnia and mental agitation.

Ayurveda, the oldest healing system known to mankind, posits that toxins (called Ama) are the source of all illnesses in the human body. Several cleansing methods (Shatkarma) have been developed to expunge the body of these toxins. Some of these include:

OIL PULLING (KAVALA GRAHA) For this procedure, swish a tablespoon of oil (typically coconut or sesame oil) in your mouth for 15 minutes first thing in the morning, then spit it out. (If you swallow it, you swallow all the toxins!) Adherents believe it strengthens gums, removes plaque, kills bacteria (coconut oil is naturally antibacterial), and improves skin issues (such as acne and eczema). Note: Do not spit coconut oil into your sink! It is a waxy solid at room temperature and can clog your pipes.

n 1997, regional manufacturers identified a critical shortage of entry-level and other manufacturing workers. Representatives from Steel Center Area Vocational-Technical School, The Institute for Economic Transformation at Duquesne University, and executives from 17 manufacturers partnered to create the MANUFACTURING 2000 (M2K) training program to fill these entry-level positions.

“Twenty years later, we have seen the need grow even stronger for a motivated and highly skilled workforce to fill our region’s aging manufacturing workforce as well as to meet market growth,” says Paul Anselmo, president of New Century Careers. “Every year for the next 10 years, 1,300 manufacturing workers will be retiring, creating a steady demand for highly skilled workers.” Organizations such as New Century Careers are stepping in to develop and train Southwestern Pennsylvania’s next generation of manufacturing workers. The New Century Careers team collaborates with local manufacturers, four local Workforce Investment Boards serving nine counties, and state agencies such as CareerLink and many community-based organizations to shed light on the opportunities that manufacturing provides for our community. “Working with many of the region’s manufacturers and businesses, we see firsthand the difference a highly skilled and highly trained workforce is to a company’s bottom line and sustainability,” says Lindsay Cost, Huntington Bank SBA Senior Specialist. “New Century Careers is an organization that is helping to provide resources to individuals to obtain the needed experience and skills to work in manufacturing — whether it is gaining experience for their first job or developing skills to progress along a career pathway.” New Century Careers has also teamed up with the Pittsburgh Chapter of the National Tooling and Machining Association (NTMA) to provide our region’s manufacturers and individuals with a proven metalworking apprenticeship.

WE STARTED GOING LOCAL BEFORE IT WAS TRENDY. ABOUT 150 YEARS AGO. At Huntington, we make it a point to work with those who move our community forward. As the #1 SBA lender in our region, we're proud to support local businesses and their efforts to make a difference right here in our neighborhood.

“The Apprenticeship Program is designed to present related instruction to support on-the-job training provided by employers,” says Anselmo. Classroom training is offered at convenient locations in both Allegheny and Westmoreland Counties. While the instruction is open to anyone who would like to register for this four-year program, apprentices who would like to earn their journeyperson papers must also be registered with his or her employer’s qualified Pennsylvania apprenticeship program for on-the-job training. Over 200 companies in Southwestern Pa. and nearly 2,500 individuals have been served by New Century Careers. From basic blueprint reading to seamless CAD/CAM integration, programs such as MANUFACTURING 2000 PLUS are teaching employees the skills needed to optimize equipment usage and key manufacturing skills. Cost says, “Labor shortages tend to slow economic growth so having a pipeline of skilled workers is a critical factor for our region’s vibrancy and growth.” For more information, visit ncsquared.com. — Kim Ravenda Huntington Bank, huntingtonbank.com

ANNIE FEDEROFF Yoga instructor Annie Federoff served as a member of WHIRL Magazine’s 13 Under 30 class of 2016 and is still making a positive impact on the City of Pittsburgh! Always having an interest in health and fitness, the Pittsburgh native set out on a wellness journey. In 2010, she created a personal training company to help women through boot camp-style classes. “I absolutely loved the high-intensity workouts and the results that they were providing, but I seemed to be missing a few other benefits,” says Federoff. Shortly after she discovered the mental and physical benefits of yoga, Federoff completed her Level 1 training with Baron Baptiste. In 2014, Federoff opened her studio: Pure Power Yoga in Robinson Township. This year, she also started working as a financial representative with Luttner Financial Group in Pittsburgh. They’re developing a program called “Mind, Money, and Muscles” to help individuals achieve total life balance.

Start Yo our Yoga Jo ourney Today! Yoga is a mind and body practice that combines physical postures (called asanas), breath work (called pranayama), and meditation. This combination creates awareness and harmony between the mind and body.

Originally developed in India over 5,000 years ago, yoga is practiced around the world in many different styles. No matter your age or fitness level, yoga is one of the best ways to stay healthy and feel great.

A regular yoga practice can:

How and where to start your yoga journey:

• • • • • • • •

• Talk to your doctor to make sure you are healthy enough to start a new form of exercise.

Increase flexibility and muscle strength Improve posture Reduce back pain and improve function Increase energy and vitality Reduce heart rate and blood pressure Relieve anxiety and depression Improve balance and coordination Enhance concentration and mood

• Talk to an instructor about the type of yoga that may be right for you. • Choose a yoga studio that has qualified teachers who will keep you safe. • Try a beginner DVD or online program in the comfort of your home if you would rather start there.

You’re never too young or too old to get started with yoga. With so many varieties of yoga, including vinyasa, ashtanga, meditative, and restorative, this mind-body exercise truly offers something for everyone.

• Explore one-on-one instruction if you need extra attention or have a lot of questions. Yoga requires minimal preparation to get started, but there are a few things you should know before your first class.

If you’re new to yoga, it can be hard to know where to start, and it’s important to not feel intimidated. Just remember that if you have an open heart and mind, you will be well on your way to a fun and rewarding yoga practice. It’s also important to be patient and have an open mind. Don’t compare yourself to others in class — yoga isn’t a competition and the poses look different for everyone. Remember, it’s your own inner journey. If you practice regularly, you’ll certainly reap the benefits.

How to prepare: • Wear comfortable, loose fitting clothes to class. • You will need a nonslip mat but don’t worry if you don’t have one. Many studios provide mats and additional equipment, such as blocks and resistance bands. • Let your instructor know if it’s your first class (chances are you’re not alone!). • Remember to ask the instructor to help you with the poses during class.

And remember that if you are a UPMC Health Plan member who is trying to lose weight, eat healthier, stop smoking, or reduce stress, you can map out your goals with a health coach to get help on your journey to a healthier lifestyle.

• Avoid eating a big meal before class because it can be hard to exercise with a full belly.

Learn more about the health coaching program at www.upmchealthplan.com. Be sure to check out One Whirl Yoga Fest on July 22, sponsored by UPMC Health Plan. You can try out classes with dozens of Pittsburgh’s top yoga instructors, shop with local vendors, and chat with UPMC Health Plan health coaches.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT Meet three artists who use their creativity and talents to send a bigger message to the community. EDITED BY MAGGIE MCCAULEY

BOB FREYER A.K.A. DURTY

Pittsburgh artist Bob Freyer, also known as “Durty,” paints images that seem to be from an alternate world — a world where people walk around in gas masks to preserve the memories they once knew and where the youth gets to act their age instead of spending all of their time in front of technology. His bold images show that there is a darker lining in his mind, as he adds gas masks to childhood figures — from Mickey Mouse to The Cat in the Hat. When he takes the gas masks off, you will immediately see the deep connection to hip-hop culture. His work with spray paint brings a welcoming, urban feel, and has attracted KRS One, Rakim, Brother Ali, and other hip-hop stars. Named 2016’s “Best Visual Artist in Pittsburgh,” Durty stays busy with everything from paintings and prints, to a coloring book, a tabletop book, and shirts. Still, he continues to be an artist who uses art as an escape. “He isn’t an artist that paints for the people, he paints for himself.” durtyart.com.

ARTUR BORDALO A.K.A. BORDALO II

Artur Bordalo grew up in Lisbon, Portugal, watching his grandfather — Real Bordalo, a well-known watercolor painter — and living the experiences brought by illegal graffiti to those who dedicate their time to it. When he started creating art on his own, as “Bordalo II,” his main focus became his concerns and passion for ecological conscience. Bordalo II uses pieces of garbage, waste, and pollution itself to build larger-than-life sculptures of animals and scenes of corruption to call attention to the negative effect disposable habits have on the world. From JULY 16-20, Bordalo II will be creating a piece on-site at Construction Junction in Pittsburgh, using materials 100 percent sourced from scrap metal yards and recycling plants. The project is a collaboration with Scrap the Trap Pittsburgh, a campaign to stop the unjustified killing of wildlife by City Animal Control. bordaloii.com. scrapthetrappgh.org.

JANET CARLISLE

Springdale, Pa., native Janet Carlisle focuses her creative energy on mixed-media collage. She has developed her unique style using fabric, pictures, paint, collected mementos, and stitching. Carlisle has works in diverse places including homes in Pittsburgh and England, and Rainbow Babies Hospital of Cleveland. She recently authored and illustrated her first children’s book, “Birds of A Feather,” published by Word Association Publishers. She studied at Cleveland Institute of Art and Carnegie Mellon University, and has a Bachelor of Arts in visual art from what is now Chatham University and a Master’s in art therapy from Seton Hill University. As an Art Therapist Registered - Board Certified (ATR-BC), Carlisle is also a member of the American Art Therapy Association, Associated Artists of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh Society of Artists, and the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators. At her church, she founded the Open Art Studio where she leads three art expression groups for children, youth, and adults during the week. She exhibits and sells her art around Pittsburgh, and makes her home in Verona with her husband, David, and cat, Frida. @jancarlisleart

BETHANY NAREY & CHASE LAMPL With English roots and family members who still live across the pond, Bethany Narey knew she wanted to incorporate the majestic elegance of the country into the plans she and Chase Lampl had for their wedding. The theme came together with cream, white, and gold décor. When it came time to shop for her gown, Bethany and her mom hit Madison Avenue to find the perfect look! They found “the one” in Carolina Herrera’s Madison Avenue store, a gorgeous number with long lace sleeves and a dramatic back. After a few alterations, the dress fit the traditional English wedding theme perfectly and added that modern touch that Bethany was looking for. To complement the delicate details and complete the ambiance she had in mind, Bethany sought out “big and regal” flowers. She says that couples should be mindful of their visions and have a wedding planner to execute it the way they want, just as her planner, Tim Komen, did for her and Chase. “He worked with me for two years during our engagement, bless his heart,” Bethany jokes. Looking back, Bethany says that it was just the most perfect day and that she was so grateful for all of her guests who came, since most of them were from out of state!

KAYLEIGH SADOWSKI & CHRISTOPHER PETRONE Kayleigh Sadowski and Christopher Petrone went to the same high school; however, they did not meet until they were introduced by a friend many years later. The couple went on to date for a few years before planning their wedding at The Twentieth Century Club. Kayleigh set out to find the perfect dress for the occasion and did so with the first one she tried on! Her fairytale-like gown featured gorgeous beading on the straps that carried over to the open back. She completed her dreamy look with a lace-trimmed, cathedral-length veil and blue heels that matched her bridesmaids’ dresses. The girls carried loose bouquets of greenery, blue thistle, hydrangeas, and other colorful florals, which added a welcomed pop of color as they made their way down the aisle of Bellefield Presbyterian Church. During their photo session before the celebration, Kayleigh and Christopher captured some sweet moments. Although the bride did not make a list of poses that she wanted to share with her photographer beforehand, she highly recommends future couples do. ”Since the day goes so quickly and there is usually a limited time for photos, I think making a list of ones you want would be really helpful!”

Chris planned out a whole spa day for Kayleigh and her mom to enjoy at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort. But before the relaxing experience, he surprised Kayleigh with a proposal at the picturesque pond at the resort!

AMANDA CARDILLO & NICK SUSNJER Amanda Cardillo was first introduced to Nick Susnjer at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. They dated for seven and a half years before commemorating the anniversary with a penguin encounter at The National Aviary. Amanda could tell Nick had something else up his sleeve when he put on a button-up shirt. “If you know Nick at all, you know that he lives in a T-shirt and jeans!” Amanda says. But she had no idea that he would be proposing to her on the rooftop of The National Aviary — with a penguin by their side! Amanda and Nick wanted a “romantic and elegant” wedding, so they kept the colors to black and white with touches of red and gold. The pops of red came in the Black Magic Roses, which were in her bouquet, in his boutonniere, and on each tier of their cake. Amanda says that the team at Gidas Flowers was very accommodating and crucial in bringing her ideas to life. “I had described to them the color red that I wanted, and they instantly saw my vision and knew of the best flower for me,” she says. Classic Tent strung together white florals to create a whimsical backdrop for when Amanda and Nick said their vows at The Grand Estate at Hidden Acres. Amanda says her favorite memory from their wedding day was marrying her true love surrounded by her best friends and family!

Amanda said “I do” in a stunning, mermaid-style Vera Wang gown.

ONE LAST

/ WHIRL DO YOU HAVE ANY FUTURE MUSIC PROJECTS IN THE WORKS? I'm always taking notes. Part of songwriting for me is grabbing ideas out of the air when they occur to me. Then, there's a second sort of level of that, when you sit down and start seriously trying to turn these ideas into finished songs. So, the next thing that I am thinking of doing is an album of songs that were really important to me when I was growing up — songs that my folks taught me and introduced to me, sort of the family record collection. A lot of those songs have been with me for a long time, and I play a lot of them on the guitar. I thought I'd sort of make a guitarcentric album of these standards — songs from prior generations to my generation. For me, it was a period of time where people were writing in the most sophisticated and the most interesting ways in terms of what they did harmonically and chorally. It was a high point, really, for popular music. A lot of it came from Broadway. A lot of it came from the movies. Some of them were just written by the tunes smiths of the day. But that's what we're sort of working on, my personal guitar arrangements of a dozen or so of those songs.

LIFE IS GOOD How sweet is it to see both James Taylor and Bonnie Raitt perform this summer? The iconic, award-winning musicians will take the stage at PPG Paints Arena on JULY 15. “It’s going to be great to tour and perform back in Pittsburgh,” says James Taylor. “It always feels like a homecoming there. I don't know why, but I think it's because I've got so much experience there. I'm looking forward to it.” WHAT IS THE MAIN THING YOU’RE LOOKING FORWARD TO WITH THIS TOUR? The fact that I am working with Bonnie Raitt is incredible. I've known Bonnie and I've worked with her many times over the years. We've toured in Italy together, and we shared a stage all the way back in 1971 when she and I were just getting started. We played at Harvard University at Sanders Theatre. We've played with a lot of the same musicians over the years, and she has written with people that are friends of mine and vice versa. We're definitely friends and old acquaintances. I love Bonnie, she's so great! We worked together two years ago at Fenway Park in Boston. That was such a great gig, and we just wanted to get together again and do a whole summer tour. That's the main thing I am looking forward to with this tour is working with Bonnie and her band and my band, as well as getting back in front of our audiences and being with our people again! WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO THE MOST ABOUT YOUR PERFORMANCE IN PITTSBURGH? Pittsburgh has been a part of — what I consider to be — my core audience since the very 100

beginning of my career. I remember playing at the former Civic Arena, when they used to be able to open the roof. I remember playing under the stars there. That was really quite amazing. I used to play at clubs in Pittsburgh in my early days. I've played at universities in the area. I've also worked a lot with the Pittsburgh Symphony [Orchestra] with the Pittsburgh Philharmonic when Marvin Hamlisch was the principal pops conductor. He was part of one of the first symphony gigs that I ever played and he made it so easy. Marvin was just a musical genius both as a composer and arranger. As someone who had never worked with symphonic backing before, Marvin just made everything so easy and great for me. He was so loose, fluent, accommodating, and welcoming. I've gone back and worked with the Pittsburgh Philharmonic and Symphony a number of times, so that's a whole other side of my connection to Pittsburgh. I've worked numerous times at Heinz Hall as well.

IN ADDITION TO BEING AN EXTREMELY TALENTED MUSICIAN, YOU ARE ALSO DABBLING IN CHILDREN’S BOOKS! CAN YOU TALK ABOUT YOUR POP-UP BOOK, “SWEET BABY JAMES,” COMING OUT IN NOVEMBER? HOW DID IT COME TO BE? It's the lyrics to my song, ‘Sweet Baby James.’ The song was originally written for my nephew, who was the first child born among my siblings. I was really excited when my brother, Alex, decided to name that first child after me. So, I had just come back from London and I drove down to see the baby in North Carolina where the family was living at the time. On the way down, this song sort of came to me. I was looking for something that I could sing to a little baby boy, a little man child, a little varmint [laughs]. A sort of ‘go to sleep, you little buck-a-roo' kind of thing [laughs]. I wrote this tune as I was driving down the coast. And so, some years later, it became the title of my first hit album and a song that I always played in Massachusetts when I came home because it has the turnpike from Stockbridge to Boston in it and everybody recognizes those two extremes of the state. So, it became a staple of my performance, and when we started making staging visuals and graphics to accompany the song, a graphic designer had designed a crudely made, but beautiful, pop-up book. You opened this thing up and a little tableau of each verse and each chorus was comprised of eight different scenes. We filmed it and used it on the screen behind the stage during the performance of that song. We toured with that for about two years until it had run its course. I was always saying to myself, 'It really would be nice to actually have this as a book and make that available to my audience at the gigs or online.' So, I went to a friend of mine at Penguin Books and we talked it up as a project. It's definitely a great book for children and their parents. It's a really nice little volume. I'm tickled by how it has turned out. James Taylor, jamestaylor.com.
