True Love Sometimes, we can get hung up on expectations for how a wedding is supposed to be. The only thing that’s supposed to happen at a wedding is two people get married. That’s the most beautiful part of it all — seeing how the happy couple chooses to celebrate their love. Wedding traditions that are honored by some, may be seen as outdated to others. But both are OK! Not a fan of wedding cake? Serve pies instead. Can’t decide on a sweet, slow song for your first dance? Choose a mash-up of your favorite party anthems.

Everything is up to personal interpretation, and the 25 couples featured in this WHIRL Wedding Guide showcase their personalities in the most incredible and innovative ways. Take one couple who wed on the Allegheny County Courthouse steps, or the bride who wore a stunning black dress on her special day. We know you’ll be flooded with ideas and instantly inspired to plan a day that’s unique to you and your soon-to-be spouse. Here’s to telling your own love story! Rachel Jones

WOW FACTOR Get inspired by the tips and trends that will make your day even more special! BY MATTHEW HACKE, EMMA HONCHARSKI, RACHEL JONES, + KATIE ROSSO

Reinventing Rustic There’s no doubt the farm wedding trend is here to stay. Thankfully, JPC Event Group added a new venue option to fit your vision: Farm at Willowbrook. Coming to New Wilmington, Pa., in summer 2018, the inspired space features a beautiful pond and brook onsite, as well as year-round climate control for any unpredictable Pittsburgh weather changes. When decorating the space, don’t be afraid to think outside the burlap. “Pretty place settings, luscious linens, and vibrant florals pop against the natural settings of farm lands,” says Jody Wimer of JPC Event Group. “Never fear branching out from the rustic expectations of a farm wedding or incorporating a little luxury or glamour. Color is just the way to do it!” JPC Event Group, 700 River Ave., Suite 317, North Side. 724.654.6851. jpceventgroup.com.

OUR FAVORITE FAVORS Sending your wedding guests off with a little token of appreciation is a great way for loved ones to remember the occasion. Jess Pecyna and Karrah Sedney of Best Day Ever Pittsburgh Events & Wedding Planning recommend choosing a favor that’s fun or practical — or both! On the practical side, try something that could be enjoyed before, during, or after the wedding. “You could provide a welcome bag filled with local or personalized goodies and a map with a few of your favorite things to do nearby for out-of-town guests,” says Pecyna. For a fun twist, use technology to entertain attendees. Sedney says, “Having a personalized Snapchat filter, modern GIF, or slow motion photo booth will surely be a hit with guests.” Best Day Ever Pittsburgh Events & Wedding Planning, bestdayeverpgh.com.

EDIBLE INSPIRATION Cake designer Maggie Austin lets us in on her sugar-based secrets in her new book, “Maggie Austin Cake: Artistry and Technique,” covering current cake trends and offering detailed instructions for her signature techniques. Wedding cakes are about having fun while still relishing in the details — and by having fun, we also mean trying it for yourself. “In my experience, a retired accountant who has never heard of gum paste is just as capable of producing a stunning sugar orchid as an executive pastry chef,” Austin writes. We love the idea of designs present on your wedding day — from flower appliqués to lace overlays — becoming edible accessories. And if you aren’t ready to make your own wedding cake just yet, perhaps a sweet anniversary cake is in your future! For more information, visit maggieaustincake.com/book.

Over the Moon To keep up with trends and countless couples who want one-of-a-kind furniture and décor pieces on their big day, Vintage Alley Rentals provides versatile pieces that work in any setting. Its newest addition, a Moon Gate Arch, can be converted from an ethereal altar at the ceremony to a fun focal point at the reception. Play up the whimsical feel of the arch by wrapping it in twinkle lights, or use greenery and florals to match your color scheme. “There are so many talented florists in Pittsburgh, and they can all make the same arch look so different,” says Trish Derry of Vintage Alley Rentals. “I just love that!” Vintage Alley Rentals, 60 Greenway Drive, West End. 412.735.9765. vintagealleypittsburgh.com.

PLAY STATIONS With creative food stations gaining popularity over buffets or sit-down dinners, couples are searching for a wow factor to make their meals stand out. “Food options such as pasta bars, taco bars, potato bars, and carving stations are requested more often these days,” says Tonya Edinger of Weddings of Pittsburgh. “Healthier options are popular now as well, with more frequent requests for vegan and glutenfree entrées and desserts.” Edinger also says to look out for the rise of food that coordinates with the color scheme and décor of the wedding. “With unique displays, chefs are getting more and more creative,” Edinger says, “and couples are loving it!” Weddings of Pittsburgh, 724.968.7135. weddingsofpittsburgh.com.

As the first wine seller in the tri-state area to offer customized labels, Pennsylvania Wine Cellar offers a personalized element for couples to use as favors, table numbers, and more! “Custom wine labels are our most popular seller when it comes to adding a personal touch to the selections that we carry,” says Kathy Katic of Pennsylvania Wine Cellar. “As we continue to provide wine favors, couples are sending in photos taken together everywhere from Pittsburgh bridges to Steelers games.” Another popular label option is an iconic Pittsburgh monument or point of interest, which makes a great welcome gift for out-of-town guests! An Invitation for Creativity The moment your loved ones see your wedding invitation in their mailbox, they’ll be eager to peek at the exciting details inside. Add extra beauty to the experience by including an unexpected special touch in your paper suite. “Watercolors or florals either on the envelope lining or printed on the back of the invitation give a wonderful surprise to those receiving the invite,” says Amy Bass of Nota Bene Fine Paper Boutique. “They certainly set the tone for a one-of-a-kind wedding.” Nota Bene Fine Paper Boutique, 9 Brilliant Ave., Aspinwall. 412.782.6300. notabenepaper.com.

Fashion Forward Erin Szymanski fills us in on the inspiration for her bridal shop, Glitter & Grit, and its sister store, Luna Boutique, opening soon! What was your goal with opening Glitter & Grit? When my friends started getting married, I was going dress shopping with them and feeling a void. Everything was so homogenized, and I couldn’t imagine myself in any of those traditional types of wedding gowns. I realized there were designers selling more unique dresses online and thought there should be somewhere for people to be able to try those styles on. I also wanted to create a relaxing, enjoyable environment where women would feel safe, heard, and beautiful.

LIGHT IT UP Picking the perfect playlist is crucial to planning a fun reception. But Pittsburgh Wedding DJ Sean with Ultimate Entertaining says the right lighting can make all the difference. “Many venues do not allow open flame, and décor can be costly,” he explains. “By using uplighting, you can create a mood or ambiance for a considerably less amount and even change the colors out. For instance, you could start out with white lighting at the beginning of the night, and after dinner, change to blue, fuchsia, green, or whichever color you desire.” The possibilities are endless and will create the perfect setting for your guests to tear up the dance floor! Pittsburgh Wedding DJ Sean with Ultimate Entertaining, 724.789.9121. pghdjsean.com.

14-21_Grazing.indd 17

Why did you want to open a second store, Luna Boutique? I was seeing a need to cater to women who are looking for something a little more bold to express their individuality. I felt like Glitter & Grit has really become exactly what it was supposed to be, and so I didn’t think that expanding or changing Glitter & Grit was the solution. With established trendsetting designers, Luna will cater to more fashion-forward women, offering the same dedication to high-quality craftsmanship and materials, and individual attention to clients that Glitter & Grit has become known for. How did you come up with the names for your stores? The naming of Glitter & Grit was achieved through a brainstorming session with my sister. I wanted a name that would represent the fact that, in both wedding planning and relationships, there is the pretty, shiny thing that everyone sees, but there’s also the hard work that goes into it. Naming Luna came a little more naturally. In mythology, Luna is the divine embodiment of the moon. So the ‘Luna woman’ desires to shine brightly, making a statement and a difference wherever she goes. Glitter & Grit, 5300 Butler St., Lawrenceville. 412.781.2375. glitterandgritpgh.com. A Sweet Addition This past March, Common Plea Catering welcomed April Gruver to their team as the new executive pastry chef. Gruver, who oversees and creates all of the delectable desserts that the company prepares, was previously the owner of Vanilla Pastry Studio in Regent Square for over a decade. The expertise and experience she brings to the Common Plea Catering group is apparent in the magnificent pastries, cakes, and more she has been making for clients, especially those who are seeking out beautiful and delicious treats for their wedding day. Couples in search of their perfect wedding cake need not look any further. They’ll fall in love after trying Gruver’s signature, buttercream icing! ARRIVE IN STYLE As the nervous thrill of doing “first look” photos builds, the last thing you want to worry about is how everyone will get there. That’s where Molly’s Trolleys Pittsburgh comes in. “Even if a couple doesn’t think they need transportation for their wedding, they can still utilize the trolley solely for photos,” says Christina Robertson of Molly’s Trolleys Pittsburgh. “Rather than traveling in a bunch of cars to photo locations, the entire bridal party can travel together, avoiding delays and getting lost — especially if someone is from out of town.” One less thing to stress about! Molly’s Trolleys Pittsburgh, 125 W. Station Square Drive, Station Square. 412.281.2085. mollystrolleyspittsburgh.com.

Dress Up A new season of bridal wear is upon us, and the fall and winter trends are in! “For brides, the up-and-coming trend seems to be one of a more whimsical nature, with ruffled tops and cold shoulders,” says Jennifer Mason of MB Bride & Special Occasion. “Chiffon gowns are popular, while long-sleeved dresses are staying strong with very clean couture looks without a lot of embellishments.” As for bridesmaids’ dresses, Mason says Allure Bridals and Ashley & Justin Bride are leading the way on the trend front. “Two-piece, mix-and-match gowns for bridesmaids seem to be heading our way again,” Mason says. We can’t wait to see what creative looks will steal the show in 2018! Be sure to visit MB Bride’s website or Facebook page for more information about upcoming designer trunk shows throughout the fall season. MB Bride & Special Occasion, 123 S. It’s Natural The best advice to give a bride before her wedding day? Relax! This goes for your bridal look, too, as naturally beautiful styles take forefront. “We are doing a lot of loose waves, and most brides are wearing their hair down,” says Lisa Martin-Campbell of Posh Salon. “They still look elegant and put together, but they like a little bit more of a tousled look these days.” Keep your tresses perfectly imperfect with a spritz or two of ORIBE Swept Up Volume Powder Spray and ORIBE Dry Texturizing Spray. To Have and To Hold

A DAY TO REMEMBER Helping Pittsburgh plan weddings since 1995, Big Day Entertainment, Video, and Photography keeps a finger on the pulse of trends in the industry. Recently, it has seen an increase in couples opting for more intimate — yet still elegant and elaborate — affairs. “Couples are still choosing large, beautiful venues, such as country clubs and hotels, to host their ceremonies and receptions,” says Shawna Miller of Big Day Entertainment. “But they are cutting back on the guest list, in order to have a more close-knit gathering.” It’s like getting the best of both worlds on your special day! Big Day Entertainment, 2549 Penn Ave., Suite 1, Strip District. 412.566.2900. bigdayentertainment.com.

Joining hands with your soon-to-be spouse during the ceremony signifies the union you’re creating together. Preserve the moment with a sculpture of your hands together, made only at Paint Monkey. Using non-toxic, eco-friendly materials, a mold of your entwined hands is cast, then filled with a plaster-marble blend. The final product is unveiled in just a few hours! “It shows every detail, so we encourage couples to wear their wedding bands,” says Joe Groom of Paint Monkey. “Just not rings with raised diamonds.” The symbolic creation can be mounted or painted to be displayed in your home or at your wedding reception. “This is an extension of what we offer for weddings, including bachelorette parties at the paint studio and setting up community paintings that can replace a wedding guest book,” says Mary Lou Bradley of Paint Monkey. “[The sculpture] makes a nice keepsake that lasts forever.” Paint Monkey, 100 43rd St., Studio 212, Lawrenceville. 4020 Butler St., Lawrenceville. 412.770.4923. McCandless Crossing, 9180 Covenant Ave., McCandless. 412.770.6346. The Waterfront, 146 W. Bridge St., Homestead. 412.779.1012. beapaintmonkey.com.

FAMILY FIRST Weddings are about officially uniting two people in love, but they’re also about bringing together families and friends who may not get the chance to see each other very often. One of the best times to catch up is over delicious food and drinks at the reception. “We are seeing our brides and grooms do a family-style first course, then go into a buffet,” says Nicolette Haley of All in Good Taste Productions. “This gives couples the feel of a sit-down dinner, but in a different way.” When choosing items for the first course or buffet, Haley recommends something seasonal. “At one fall wedding we did last year, we served chicken pot pie in mini pumpkins, and guests would top them with puff pastry domes.” Yum! All in Good Taste Productions, 1250 Monterey St., North Side. 412.321.6869. allingoodtasteproductions.com.

WW photographers’ favorites

Stunning Snapshots BY MATTHEW HACKE

The idiom, “a picture is worth a thousand words,” could not be more true than when taking a look at the wedding pictures that two local photographers showcase here. They not only managed to capture the essence of each couple’s special day, but they also tell the unique backstories of how they got their picture-perfect poses. Details in WHIRL Wedding Advertising Directory, page 83.

SWEET EMBRACE

Maggie Kibbe & Harry Kolonich “This is one of my favorite images from last fall because of the beautiful color of Maggie’s red hair, deep red shoes, and bouquet against the fall backdrop of the changing tree. This image was taken at The Mansion in Butler on a gorgeous, early November day last year. The natural light was amazing at that time, and the temperature was warm like summer, the type of fall day you where you just want to stay outside as long as possible. It was an absolutely perfect moment to capture these two, completely in love.” — Autumn Stankay, SkySight Photography WH I R LWE D D I N G S . C O M / W H I R L W E DDIN G GU IDE

Katherine Marschik & Matthew Thomas “The image of Katie and Matt exiting the church was one of my favorites from their wedding day. I just loved their expressions and their guests’ excitement as they showered them with dried lavender. There is nothing quite like those first few moments as husband and wife to celebrate with family and friends in this way.”— Autumn Stankay, SkySight Photography

Tess Weaver & Matt Rancourt “Tess and Matt did not expect rain to be a guest at their ceremony at Meadowoods at Seven Springs Resort. When it arrived as Tess walked down the aisle, the couple didn’t skip a beat. As the rain grew heavier, they still continued through their ceremony, with locked eyes and hands, reading their vows as if nothing was going on around them. Their love was stronger than the storm, and the photos really proved that. This image of their first announcement as husband and wife was an incredible moment. As photographers, we are always prepared for scenarios like this, so we had our umbrellas ready to go. I had my assistant hold one over me while I continued to photograph the ceremony.” — Autumn Stankay, SkySight Photography

“We sort of snuck our way up to the rotunda at The Pennsylvanian. The station building was designed by Chicago architect Daniel Burnham and built between 18981904. It now houses luxury apartments, but the light reflected by the orange terra cotta in the rotunda gave the photos a glowing drama. That didn’t stop me from setting up two lights to make the scene even more dramatic. We got the picture and hurried back onto the party bus.”— James Knox, James Knox Photography

AN ENCHANTING EVENING

Sarah Palasja & Brian Martinez-Lyons “The end-of-the-night photos are my favorite. You can play with the setting sun or other vistas that look better when natural light is waning. The park across from the Children’s Museum — where the ceremony and reception were — had this cool fog sculpture by Ned Kahn. I popped a light behind the bride and groom to play off the vertical lines of the sculpture and got this shot before the fog turned back on and we couldn’t see anything.” — James Knox, James Knox Photography

GLAMOROUS GAL

Sarah Palasja & Brian Martinez-Lyons “Being in a room of ladies getting ready and doing their make-up sounds like the last place for a man, but I find that some of my coolest moments come from hanging out in the bride’s cloister. Tender moments with her mom or the moment when her dad comes in and sees his little girl in her dress make some of the best shots. It’s also a time for relaxing and getting comfortable with the bridal party in preparation for a long day of shooting.”— James Knox, James Knox Photography

Cowgirl boots and a bouquet of pink, peach, white, and cream roses completed Courtnay’s look.

“There are no rules in wedding planning, so throw out the traditional advice and make it your own,” Courtnay advises.

“Vince and I met through mutual friends while out one night,” says Courtnay. “He thought a cheesy joke would seal the deal, but it took a few more meetings to get to the first date!”

hen Courtnay Rowan and Vince Orlandini said “I do,” they did so with an elegant, rustic ceremony and reception at Destiny Hill Farms. The picture-perfect venue not only embodied the theme, but it also highlighted other components that made their day so special. “I cannot tell you how many people commented that our wedding was ‘so us’ because it was casual, laid-back, and fun,” says Courtnay. For instance, instead of a traditional wedding cake, guests enjoyed apple dumplings and pie à la mode. “There were horses out for everyone to see, and cornhole games going until they kicked us out,” Courtnay jokes. One of the couple’s favorite memories was sharing the evening with their children. “My stepsons were junior groomsmen, and our three-month-old daughter was there,” Courtnay says. “In fact, our baby girl wore my baptism dress to the wedding, which is going to be a great story when she gets married.” A harvest moon lit up the night sky, which was an ideal ending to a beautiful day shared with loved ones. “Everyone contributed to making our day as special as it was,” Courtnay says. “I truly would not have changed a thing.” W Bride’s Gown & Bridesmaids’ Dresses David’s Bridal • Ceremony, Florals, & Reception Destiny Hill Farms Caterer The SpringHouse • Favors Mason jar mugs • Entertainment Tammy Petty of Treasure Band Hair Jen Perchinsky • Makeup Beauty at its Best by Julianne Mycyk • Photographer Frank Vilsack Photography Tuxedos American Commodore Tuxedo

fter dating for over four years, Joe Nickel and Marc Lambo were ready to take the next step and make their relationship official. “We always discussed getting married, so we just agreed on a date and threw a party,” Joe says of their early summer nuptials. The couple’s ceremony and reception took place at the historic Hartwood Acres Mansion. “The two of us — with the help of friends and family — did a lot to make sure our wedding had custom touches that made it feel more personal for everyone to enjoy,” Joe continues. This included having Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice Christine Donohue, a friend of the grooms, officiate the ceremony. Donohue played a large part in having Pennsylvania move forward on marriage equality, making her presence even more significant. During the reception, the couple shared their first dance with their mothers to “I’ll Be There” by Jackson 5. “The day was filled with so many supportive friends and family members who have shaped us into who we are today, many of whom traveled in from all over the country,” Joe says. “It meant a lot to us to have them there celebrating our day.” W “Neither of us are big fans of wedding cake, so a talented friend of ours provided cupcakes, along with a very large assortment of cookies personally made by our family and friends,” Joe says.

Before they began planning, Joe and Marc were advised “to not create unrealistic achievables and don’t focus on things that aren’t truly important. It’ll only distract you from enjoying the process and add stress the day of.”

“One of the highlights of our ceremony was when our flower girl, Marc’s niece, Alivia, released the balloon she was carrying as the song ‘I Choose You’ by Sara Bareilles concluded,” Joe says. “It was a beautiful moment that our guests continue to talk about.”

ormer members of Emory University’s swim team, Jacqueline Schneider and Darrell Eacret let their friendship grow for months before committing to a romantic relationship. While visiting his family in Lake Tahoe for Christmas a few years later, the couple ventured to the lake for a snowy, picturesque walk. When they arrived at Logan Shoal’s Vista Point, Darrell proposed! For their special day, the couple wanted to incorporate the same magic and excitement of the Christmas season with a classic, yet uniquely elegant, feel. Jacqueline chose sentimental accessories for the day, including a garter handmade by one of her aunts that featured lace and pearls from her mother’s and grandmother’s wedding dresses, as well as a flower made from the blue gown her aunt wore as the maid of honor in her mother’s wedding. During Jacqueline’s long walk down the aisle of St. Paul Cathedral to Darrell, she passed many emotional family members and close friends, filling her with emotion as she thought of her new life with Darrell. The groom says that was his favorite moment of the day. The couple celebrated with a LeMont Restaurant reception that overlooked the Pittsburgh skyline. hen choosing a venue for their fall nuptials, Amanda Greenberg and Chris Lehner didn’t have to think twice. “Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens has such gorgeous natural lighting and flowers,” says Amanda. “It felt effortless to be able to hit the mark with the modern and eclectic vibe that I was looking for.” Because of the bright flowers, fall foliage, and greenery in the gorgeous space, the couple chose a palette of gray and taupe for the decorations. But the bride and her bridesmaids made a statement in metallic shoes and sparkly jewelry. “Although I aimed for a neutral palette with the décor, there were some accents to make everyone stand out!” One of the shining aspects of the evening for the pair was having family and friends celebrate in one location. “We didn’t want guests to have to travel from location to location, but move fluidly through different rooms in one location,” says Amanda. From the terrace ceremony at sunset, cocktail hour in the Tropical Forest, and the reception in the Special Events Hall, the evening went off without a hitch. “The transformative space allowed us to bring our ideas to fruition, and most importantly, give our guests things to do while celebrating with us!” W During the ceremony, the rabbi read aloud sweet sentiments Amanda and Chris had written about one another. “Hearing what we said about each other was so beautiful, and for our friends and family to hear it as well was really emotional!”

“No lie, I spent hours upon hours finding eight perfect dresses,” Amanda says of her bridesmaids’ gray and taupe gowns.

“I added mixed metals everywhere — in the three table dressings and printed overlays, as well as the candles — in order to create levels and dimensions,” Amanda says.

ometimes, it just takes a single item or experience to spark the entire theme for a wedding. For Kelsey Russell and Trey Satterfield, it was her wedding dress! Shopping with a friend who flew in from L.A., Kelsey said she wasn’t set on a color. “Meaning white versus ivory,” Kelsey clarifies with a laugh. When the shop attendant handed her a strapless blush gown, Kelsey wasn’t thrilled but tried it on regardless. All lace with a jeweled belt, the dress proved to be equal parts detailed and comfortable. “Once I put it on, I knew I wouldn’t want anything else,” Kelsey says. “Since my dress was non-traditional, it threw off what I had in my mind. I had to start from scratch.” The color scheme shifted to a warm palette of pink, red, and purple. The soft, romantic vibe radiated throughout the Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall & Museum ceremony and reception. Kelsey and Trey chose the venue to introduce out-of-town guests to the city the couple now calls home. “We love Pittsburgh so much and wanted people to experience it,” Kelsey says. “I was blown away by how much fun it was to be surrounded by people we love, supporting and having a party with us!” W

“I loved our first look,” Kelsey says. “I knew seeing each other for the first time would be overwhelming for us, so we chose to do it alone.”

Trey and his nine groomsmen chose a softer look with gray suits.

Kelsey and Trey shared their first dance as husband and wife to John Legend’s “Stay With You.” “John Legend was one of the first concerts we went to together.”

enn State University holds special meaning to Nolan Galbraith and Tony Jones. It’s where they earned bachelor’s degrees, where they first met, and where they got engaged on New Year’s Eve. “I told [Tony] I wanted to end the year on a high note,” says Nolan, “and then I dropped to a knee and asked him to marry me.” The couple tied the knot with an outdoor ceremony at The Chadwick. The wedding party looked sharp in black suits. Nolan and his groomsmen wore turquoise ties, while Tony and his groomsmen sported navy blue ties. “My favorite memory from the day requires a little backstory,” Nolan explains. “One day, our friend decided that she was going to give us a celebrity power couple name. So, ‘Tony and Nolan’ became ‘Tolan.’ Fast-forward to the ceremony. Our minister was about to declare us married, and he slipped up and said, ‘Tolan.’ We had a good laugh that ‘Tolan’ made its way into our religious ceremony.” When the husbands made their grand entrance into the reception, their 120 guests cheered and started a rousing “Tolan” chant. “It was the best day of our lives,” says Tony. “We were happy that our friends and family could all be there to support us on that day.” W Cake Lincoln Bakery • Caterer, Ceremony, Linens, & Reception The Chadwick • Entertainment DJ John “Ace” Munley • Favors Cookies made by family and friends • Florals Flowers in the Attic • Jewelry Blue Nile Photographer Josh Mariana Photography • Suits Men’s Wearhouse

T

he love story of Jansen Hartmann and Chris Jamison starts back in fifth grade. “He’s a triplet, and his sisters were (and still are!) my best friends,” Jansen explains. “Chris and I acted like we hated each other.” They gave up the act in middle school, committing to a courtship that lasted nine years. Their long-awaited nuptials arrived with plenty of emotion and personal touches. Jansen and Chris each penned heartfelt vows, declaring their love for one another before family and friends. “The ceremony was the best part,” Jansen says. “I really enjoyed saying our vows the most. It was an emotional time, exciting but also sentimental.” Their sentimentality shined through rustic, antique decorations like the suitcase they converted into a card box and the romantic candlelight. During the reception, Chris, a former finalist on “The Voice” performed a song he had written for his bride called “Coffee in the Morning.” “In an episode of ‘This Is Us,’ one of the characters talked about always bringing his wife coffee in the morning,” Jansen explains. The moment inspired Chris to sing his promises to always show Jansen he loves her. “And yes,” Jansen says, “he still brings me coffee every morning.” W

An antique piano, adorned with greenery and candles, served as an altar during their ceremony.

Bouquets of ivory and cream roses, blue thistle, silver brunia, Italian ruscus, dusty miller, and anemones complemented the bridesmaids’ neutral dresses.

Chris’s grandmother, Barbara Stanko, handmade white almond cakes with buttercream icing to serve as centerpieces for each table at the reception. “She made a total of 20 cakes and 19 pounds of icing!”

Amie Guarino & Tim Pitschke BY RACHEL JONES PHOTOGRAPHS FROM LEEANN MARIE PHOTOGRAPHY

L

ess than a week before Valentine’s Day, Amie Guarino and Tim Pitschke celebrated their love for one another at the Duquesne Club. Deep red roses, crystal accents, and black lace elements — including the bride’s gown! — added to the romantic, intimate occasion. “We had 150 guests,” says Amie, “which might seem big, but it truly was our closest friends and family.” Family played a major role in the day, as the bride’s brother, Lou Guarino, got ordained online so he could officiate the ceremony. Incorporating his own sense of humor, as well as personal touches, made the service even more meaningful to the couple. The newlyweds kicked off the reception by dancing to “You’re the Inspiration” by Chicago. Amie and her father wowed on the dance floor, too. “We did a waltz to the theme from ‘The Godfather,’ then the record scratched and it went into ’24K Magic’ by Bruno Mars,” Amie says. “We’re a really big Italian family, so the crowd went nuts!” The crowd joined in, dancing to DJ Petey C. throughout the evening and capping off a day that truly reflected the couple’s vision. “Our wedding wasn’t super traditional,” Amie says. “It was more like, ‘Come to dinner! hen they started planning their wedding, Kate Koop and Khip Irwin wanted personal, significant venues. Kate, a lawyer and partner at Tucker Arensberg, P.C., spends a lot of time at the Allegheny County Courthouse. “I always pass the grand staircase and admire the architecture. I thought it was the perfect place to hold our ceremony,” Kate says. “Plus, not many people have had their wedding ceremonies here. Having a unique wedding venue was really intriguing.” Surrounded by candles and over 150 loved ones, Kate and Khip took their first steps into their new forever. They followed the classic, sophisticated ceremony with a fun, modern reception at James Gallery, which Khip’s parents own. “We decided to come back to the place that was like a second home,” Kate says. “It’s the perfect place to hold a wedding.” Transitioning to the reception’s atmosphere, Kate removed the long train that cascaded down the courthouse steps and added a custom-made, crystal and beaded belt for a chic look. “Being surrounded by friends and family from every part of our lives was the best part of the day,” Kate says. “Our friends gave some amazing toasts, and in the photos, you can tell how happy and in love we are.” W Bride’s Gown Badgley Mischka • Cake & Caterer All in Good Taste Productions • Ceremony The Grand Staircase at Allegheny County Courthouse • Decorations, Linens, & Rentals Party Savvy • Entertainment Hot Metal Strings; Bachelor Boys Band • Favors Pittsburgh Popcorn; Toffee Taboo • Florals GreenSinner • Hair MCN Salon • Honeymoon Italy • Makeup Kiss and Makeup • Photographer Caryn Azure Photography • Planners Bob Sendall of All in Good Taste Productions; Alexandra Samuels of the Allegheny County Court House • Reception James Gallery • Rehearsal Dinner Bob Sendall’s home • Videographer Andrew Beard

hortly after Ryan Very proposed to Cristena Jenner, they knew they wanted their wedding to be at The Grand Hall at The Priory Hotel. The overall look for the day, however, was still up in the air. “After we booked it, I went to Allegheny Commons Park, where I knew I wanted to do photos, one year before our wedding. When I saw the bright yellow leaves, I knew I had to pick colors that didn’t clash with the setting or the Priory.” Warm, cranberry bridesmaids’ dresses — that looked beautiful on her sisters and sisters-in-law! — became the perfect fit, and neutral bouquets with pops of red followed suit. Cristena fit the classic feel in a strapless, lace gown from Bridal Suite Boutique, a shop owned by her best friend from home. A matching lace jacket kept the bride warm during the ceremony and outdoor photo shoot, but she traded the jacket for lace straps to wear at the reception. Throughout the planning process, Cristena stayed stress-free by keeping a thorough schedule and keeping Ryan involved in the process. “It’s important to do the wedding planning together,” Cristena says. “This is the first big project you’re doing together. It has its own challenges, but it’s an experience that helps prepare you for marriage.” W Their wedding served as the first opportunity for Cristena’s New Jersey family and Ryan’s Pittsburgh family to spend quality time together.

Cristena’s father designed and handbuilt this wooden chest to hold cards and gifts at the reception.

The couple served a half chocolate, half white cake with textured buttercream frosting. “I like when a cake looks like my grandma made it,” Cristena says. “Fresh, real, tasty.”

here’s no such thing as a small Indian wedding,” jokes Bhaavana Venkatesh. “That’s just our culture — we’re so big on family and everything’s larger than life.” And that’s exactly how she and Jeff Ganesh Sooknarine wanted their wedding to be. It all began the night before the ceremony with a traditional Indian Sangeet on the Gateway Clipper. The colorful event featured henna art, delicious finger foods, and music and dance performances by friends and family members. “It’s a time to embrace and welcome the couple,” Bhaavana explains. “Everyone is having fun and enjoying each other’s company.” The group reconvened the next day for a ceremony that incorporated her Indian roots and his Indo-Caribbean heritage. “When we first saw each other, he teared up a little bit,” Bhaavana says. “It was a special moment for us.” Following the red-and-gold-bedecked service, the bride and groom changed ensembles and headed into the whimsical reception. Working with the teams from Pearl Celebrations and the Wyndham Grand Pittsburgh Downtown, the couple painted a beautiful, romantic scene with lavender uplighting, hundreds of candles, and stunning centerpieces. After their Pittsburgh festivities, Bhaavana and Jeff hosted a second wedding in his hometown of Orlando! “For me, the best moment was bringing our two families and two cultures together,” Bhaavana says. “That’s something I’ll always remember.” W Bhaavana and Jeff sat with their parents on the mandap for the ceremony. “I liked that ours was rounded. It kept the space very intimate while creating dimension at the same time.”

aid-back elegance’ is our favorite way to describe our day,” Stefanie Plant and Greg Pasquarella say of their wedding. “We wanted our wedding to have a lush, garden chic feel with a bit of art gallery fun.” The Walled Garden of Mellon Park, one of the couple’s favorite parks in the city, served as the beautiful backdrop for their ceremony. Loved ones then mingled and admired the exhibits at the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts during cocktail hour before entering the tented dinner space. Sticking with black and white décor, as to not take away from the colorful venue, the simple setting was elevated by draped greenery and a mix of live and dried garlands. “To break up the heaviness of the greenery, we included hundreds of small, simple glass candles mixed with green glass water bottles. [Our florist, Community Flower Shop,] even suspended greenery from the tent canopy and small glass orbs, which held candles.” DJ J. Malls rocked the reception with the ultimate dance party. “Not one slow song was played, and the dance floor was always full!” Stefanie says. “We had a super cool after-party at the SpringHill Suites Pittsburgh Bakery Square’s rooftop bar. Greg and I, along with most of our guests, walked in a parade to the after-party, which was really fun.” W

iven David Shipley’s educational background in strategy and analytics, and Ryan Bierkortte’s in science, testing out their compatibility metrics upon meeting for a first date in February 2014 was a must for the duo. Needless to say, sparks flew and the couple has been together ever since. “To our mutual delight, the first date went amazingly well and our relationship has only followed a positive trajectory,” says David. The couple incorporated many of their favorite things into their wedding celebration — from the cocktail party to the Veuve Clicquot Champagne bar! “We both love and enjoy celebrating all milestones in life, especially with those who we don’t get to see often,” says David. “Champagne is a signature token of any celebration, and we wanted a casual atmosphere for guests to move around and chat, so it was perfect.” The black-tie affair at the Carnegie Museum of Art also featured a family photo gallery. “As guests were mingling and moving about the space before the ceremony, they could view pictures from our parents’, grandparents’, aunts’, and uncles’ weddings that were set up,” David continues. “Family is very important to me and Ryan, and having an amazing group of family and friends there made our day epic.” W

Both Beyoncé fans, David surprised Ryan with a custom-made bicycle to ride into the reception — just like the one featured in her music video for “Blow.”

“It takes an army to pull off a wedding!” David says. “We could have never done it without the help and coordination of our florist, Nathan; {SHE}; the museum staff; and [our photographer, Tiffany Cooper of Hot Metal Studio].”

White orchids, hydrangeas, amaryllis, roses, and cherry branches and blossoms made the space feel like a “spring garden.”

lthough both Kimberly Russo and Ronald Joseph had been employees with Pittsburgh Public Schools for over a decade, the two never seemed to cross paths at quite the right time. But after some “scheming” from Kim and Ron’s coworkers, the two were finally set up for a date. Two years later, on a weekend trip to Chautauqua Lake, Ron surprised Kim by, first, knocking all of her jewelry off her nightstand, and then, as he was picking the jewelry up, presenting her with a gorgeous engagement ring. The couple decided to add numerous personal touches to their wedding including the officiant, Kim’s secretary, who is also an ordained minister; the venue, the Children’s Museum, where Kim had been a preschool teacher; and the wine, all from the Chautauqua region where the couple got engaged. But despite all of the special details, Kim says her favorite part of the day was the moment directly after the ceremony, when she and her new husband were able to gather with just the bridal party and immediate family to enjoy some time together. “Everyone was hugging and cheering,” says Kim. “The nerves from the ceremony were gone and we were officially married.” W

lthough they initially met in grade school, Colleen Kiss and Zachary Krejdovsky waited nearly a decade before they began dating. “We both switched schools and went different ways — until about 10 year later!” says Colleen. “We reconnected at the end of my junior year of high school … and at the end of his freshman year at Saint Vincent College.” Fast-forward another eight years and Zack was ready to pop the question. Before a beautiful dinner at LeMont, Zack suggested they snap a quick photo together on the iconic Mt. Washington lookout. As Colleen was looking out over picturesque Downtown, Zack proposed. The couple decided to tie the knot during the holiday season, opting for a vintage holiday feel with crisp whites and pops of warm cranberry decorating the Pittsburgh Golf Club reception. Although they treasure every memory from their special day, the couple agrees that the most emotional moment for them was the recitation of their vows to one another. “Even now, our vows have been words that have resonated with us as we have embraced ‘married life’ and all of the challenges that come with it — good and bad!” W

Colleen’s favorite memory of her wedding was being announced man and wife, and walking arm-in-arm with her new husband down the aisle of Saint Peter Parish. The snowy white scene outside the windows, the soft candlelight, and the touches of gold and cranberry combined for an intimate and festive atmosphere.

Staying warm and stylish, Colleen’s bridesmaids wore burgundy shawls that matched their bouquets.

hen Amy Dugan and Gabriel Gonzalez started making wedding plans, they knew they wanted their day to be classic, timeless, and romantic. And their St. Paul Cathedral ceremony was exactly that. Their vision came together with an ivory, blush, and champagne color scheme. The best moment of the wedding for Amy was when she and her father were about to walk down the aisle and her dad choked up. “I could feel myself smiling as I made my way towards Gabe,” she says. For Gabriel, the best moment was seeing Amy walk down the aisle and “losing it,” he says. The couple also loved the toasts from Amy’s father, sister, and Kersey, the best man. Kersey, Amy says, “even sang a little chant that he had come up with on his own and had everyone signing along at the chorus.” The fun carried on throughout the Pittsburgh Athletic Association reception with a money dance featuring vodka-soaked cherries instead of shots and dancing to tunes by Joel Lindsay Entertainment. W The couple served a four-tiered cake, simply decorated with beautifully piped icing and flowers.

Even before they were engaged, Gabriel knew he wanted their first dance to be to “I’m Gonna Be” by Sleeping at Last. “We loved the song and the fact that it wasn’t a traditional first dance song that we had heard played at other weddings,” Amy says.

“I wanted something classic and timeless, but also soft and romantic, that I could look back on years from now,” Amy says of her dress and veil. Amy’s bridesmaids shimmered in glittery, silver gowns, while her sister, the maid of honor, dazzled in a similar blush number.

“Our theme was, in a way, ‘Amalfi meets the mountains,’” says Rebecca. Inspired by a vacation to beautiful Amalfi, Italy, and their hometown roots in the scenic Laurel Highlands, the couple decorated with greenery, white flowers, and lemons.

“In the end, it was the people who offered to help [plan the wedding] that made it all come together,” Rebecca says. “I had no stress because of that.”

Rebecca said “yes” to the first dress she tried on — a stunning, lacy number with a high neckline and long sleeves.

hey say, “When you know, you know.” Rebecca Maddas and Joshua Velicevich knew they wanted to be together when they first started dating in high school. They also knew they wanted to wait until Rebecca had finished her doctorate before they got married. “We dated for 22 years,” Rebecca says. “I said, ‘I need to get through this [schooling] before we get married. If it was up to him, we would’ve been married a long time ago!” Before the countdown to midnight one New Year’s Eve, Rebecca and Joshua were going through the memory jar they had been filling up throughout the year. Reminiscing about cherished moments shared together, Rebecca retrieved one piece of paper from the jar that said, “Will you marry me?” They stayed true to themselves when planning their special day, celebrating a traditional Catholic ceremony at St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church and a non-traditional reception at Bittersweet Cafe. “We didn’t have a first dance or a wedding party. We just threw a party,” Rebecca says. “I tried to focus on and enjoy the preparation for our marriage, not our wedding. The wedding is just one day, but your marriage will last much longer than that.” W

nline dating can be difficult in today’s technology-driven world, so when Jessica Lipsett took a chance with Match.com and met Todd Ledoux, she was pleasantly surprised to find a real connection. “People had always said, ‘You’ll know when you find the one,’” says Jessica. “I’m not sure I really believed that until I met Todd. He was the man I’d been waiting for my entire life.” After seven months of dating, Todd popped the question on a romantic trip to Key West in full view of a live webcam so the couple’s families could share in their special moment, too. “It was the perfect way to include our friends and family without them actually being there,” says Jessica. Nearly 140 guests joined the happy couple on their wedding day, many of whom traveled from out of state. “We couldn’t get over the positive responses we were receiving on the response cards,” Jessica says. “One of my favorite memories would have to be walking down the aisle. I was so overwhelmed, looking around and seeing the family and friends who were there to support us and celebrate with us. We are so blessed!” W

“When I put it on, I knew it was the one,” Jessica says of her textured, princess-style gown.

The bride carried a similar arrangement for her bouquet, which complemented her bohemian-style Hayley Paige gown. “I saw Hayley Paige was having a trunk show in Mt. fan of the hit TV show “Friends,” Danielle Dortenzo admired Phoebe and Mike’s winter wedding. And when her own Mike (Michael Poremba) proposed in the wintertime, Danielle says the wintery theme just made sense! To do so, the couple stuck to a snow white and cool blue color scheme. Danielle walked down the aisle of St. John the Baptist Church in a beautiful lace gown with a sheer neckline. “I think for both of us, the best moment of our wedding was our ceremony,” Danielle says. “Walking down the aisle for me was so emotional. Having my Dad on my arm and seeing Mike down the aisle, with my favorite music playing, was just perfect.” Danielle and Michael used pinecones and pine branches, live fig trees, and sparkling strings of lights to bring their winter wonderland vision to life at the Fox Chapel Golf Club reception. Guests stayed warm by grabbing a mug from the hot chocolate bar — complete with marshmallows, chocolate-coated spoons, and peppermint rock candy sticks — or the tea station, with brews served alongside lemon lollipops and clover honey. W

“You and I” by Michael Bublé played for Danielle and Michael’s first dance, immediately followed by their favorite dance song: “Uptown Funk” by Bruno Mars.

Berries and pinecones were mixed into Danielle’s bouquet for more rustic flair. The hardest part of dressing this dapper group? “Finding the right tux!”

s the owner of Roxanne’s Catering and Event Planning, Roxanne Easley carried out her wedding plans with a thoughtful, creative approach. “I wanted to do things that were unique,” Roxanne says. “It was the most amazing day of our lives.” Starting at Eastminster Presbyterian Church, the couple exchanged traditional vows and participated in a unity sand ceremony with their children. Each member of the family poured a different color of sand into a glass vase to symbolize their new union. Their children also joined the newlyweds for a fun first dance, choreographed by the bride’s aunt. Nearly 300 family members and friends came together for the celebration, taking in the elegant reception at Rodef Shalom Congregation and savoring the delicious dinner menu created by Roxanne’s Catering and Event Planning. (Teriyaki salmon, mango salsa chicken, and honey-glazed ham — yum!) From the handmade programs that doubled as fans, to the edible menus at each place setting, the bride ensured every element was accounted for and executed flawlessly. “My staff and I worked for two years on this wedding, putting every single detail together,” Roxanne says. “Because I’m a small business, I wanted to work with and incorporate other companies like mine to show small businesses can do big things. Everyone came together, and it was a magical day.” W He knew her mother and she knew his father, but Roxanne and Jason didn’t meet until a dating app matched them. “God has a time and place for everything.”

“I put it on and fell in love,” Roxanne says of her layered, princess-worthy ballgown. “I wore it for an hour at the store.” Blue uplighting, crystal chandeliers and candelabras, and dozens of votive candles set the mood for the elegant reception.

Black and white décor filled the Pittsburgh Field Club reception.

Jamie and Ryan chose “Thinking Out Loud” by Ed Sheeran for their first dance together.

Sparklers led the way as the couple exited the reception for their “mini-moon” in California.

ou should date my brother!” exclaimed Courtney Dempsey, shortly after she met Jamie Edmonds at a mutual friends’ house. And shortly after Jamie met Ryan Dempsey, she realized they were a perfect match. Although the couple lived in Detroit while they were engaged, they came to Pittsburgh for the nuptials. “I knew forever that my wedding would be a reflection of me and my love for my husband, but also my love for my hometown,” says Jamie. “My mom, Harriet, and I did most of the planning ourselves. Since I was in Detroit, she was my eyes and ears in the Burgh.” In order to show her mostly out-of-town guests the best of Pittsburgh, Jamie picked her favorite locations and restaurants for them to explore. Even her in-laws, Mike and Susan Dempsey, created specialty Terrible Towels and Pittsburgh-themed welcome boxes for the guests! Jamie wore a satin, off-the-shoulder gown for the black-tie wedding, carrying a billowing bouquet of white florals as she made her way down the aisle of St. Benedict the Moor Parish. “Walking down the aisle with my Dad and seeing Ryan at the altar was a moment I will never forget.” W

A

casual conversation during a chance meeting in Downtown Pittsburgh turned into a serious romance between Torrie Smith and Nicholas LaMantia. The couple took their time planning their special day, saying “I do” two years after Nicholas proposed. Torrie dazzled in an A-line gown with a beaded bodice, while the groom rocked a custom-made burgundy tuxedo with black lapels. “When the doors first opened at Heinz Memorial Chapel and we saw each other for the first time,” Torrie says, “that image is very much a lasting one.” For their reception at The Grand Hall at The Priory Hotel, the couple planned the placement of each wreath and tree to give a holiday feel that was more focused on winter than Christmas. The fun celebration kicked off with the bride and groom’s first dance to a mash-up of “Pure Imagination” from “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” and “Dog Days Are Over” by Florence + The Machine. “It was very special because it was our first moment with just the two of us as a married couple.” W

The couple chose a neutral color scheme, incorporating sparkly gold and rich burgundy accents.

Torrie wore a fur shrug for their outdoor photo shoot, fastening it with a bejeweled snowflake pendant.

Instead of displaying a traditional guest book, the bride and groom asked attendees to hang their sweet messages on a Christmas tree.

Hilary Ford & Stefen Wisniewski

Hilary found the dress of her dreams — a longsleeved, lace, fitted Pronovias gown — after only the second try!

BY MATTHEW HACKE PHOTOGRAPHS FROM MEGAN WYLIE RUFFING AND JEANNINE BONADIO OF WYLIE IMAGES

W

hile they’ve known each other since childhood, Hilary Ford and Stefen Wisniewski did not begin dating until last summer. “We grew up within a few miles of one another, played sports with one another’s siblings, attended the same church, and even vacationed with each other’s families,” says Hilary. It took the couple 20 years to realize how compatible they truly were. “Within weeks, we knew that we found the person that God designed to be our other half.” Stefen, a guard and center for the Philadelphia Eagles, proposed to Hilary at sunset alongside a lake near their alma mater, Penn State University. “While the proposal wasn’t exactly a surprise, as we had already discussed marriage, Stefen did surprise me by having all of our family and friends there to celebrate with us following the proposal,” Hilary says. Their loved ones gathered for a ceremony at First Presbyterian Church of Pittsburgh, officiated by Stefen’s father, who is a pastor. After the ceremony, the newlyweds hosted a reception at Omni William Penn Hotel. “We wanted a simple, yet formal, black-tie wedding,” Hilary says. “We kept a black-and-white color scheme, which complemented the rich red and gold hues of the Omni’s grand ballroom perfectly.” W

“If you’re planning a wedding with a very short time frame like ours, it’s important to make decisions quickly and be flexible and open to creative alternatives,” advises Hilary.

Guests enjoyed a white almond cake with raspberry filling from Bethel Bakery.

“Taking football-themed pictures with our bridal party and dancing the night away with family and friends are moments we’ll never forget from our special day.”

The father of the bride built the bar to be a focal point at the reception. Today, it can be found in Kelly and Anthony’s game room!

“Anthony and I both loved every minute of wedding planning together. We are both positive people who like to be creative and think outside of the box,”

Kelly Pirring & Anthony Caruso BY MATTHEW HACKE + KATIE ROSSO PHOTOGRAPHS FROM JACKSON SIGNATURE PHOTOGRAPHY

“We didn’t have to decorate very much because the house spoke for itself,” Kelly says of the reception. “It’s so beautiful and every room tells a story.”

“So many people helped us bring it all together,” Kelly says, looking back on their special day. “It was a true family and friend event.”

O

n New Year’s Eve 2011, three months into their relationship, Anthony Caruso told Kelly Pirring that he would marry her on the next New Year’s Eve that falls on a Saturday. Five years later, he did just that! The couple celebrated their nuptials at a private mansion on Fifth Avenue, the first wedding to be held at the venue. “Since our wedding was at a venue where one had never been held before, we had to be very organized,” says Kelly. “We wanted this entire process to show us as a couple and what we could create together.” As the couple’s vision came to life on their big day, Kelly made sure to throw in a few surprises as well, including one of her favorite moments of the evening. “I surprised Anthony with a private dinner before we got introduced as husband and wife at the reception,” says Kelly. “I wanted to have a moment with my husband to talk about our future and enjoy our first dinner as husband and wife.” This intimate and joyous moment is something that Kelly tells future couples to make time for. “Out of anything we did for our wedding, this was the best idea!” W Cake Giant Eagle Market District • Caterer Just Ask Catering • Ceremony St. Basil Church • Decorations Mosaic, Inc. Wedding jewelry trends may come and go — but mostly, they grow! The slight variations we’ve noticed as styles evolve mean great opportunities for you to find a piece that speaks to your personal taste. Halo engagement rings and pavéstyle bands aren’t going anywhere, but they are gravitating toward more unique interpretations. Thinking outside the circle halos and mixing up metals, the rings on the following pages offer a beautiful take on the settings you already love. Fit for a Fairy Tale BY RACHEL JONES PHOTOGRAPH FROM JENNA HIDINGER PHOTOGRAPHY

R

ed roses became a beautiful motif at Brianna Griffin and Corey Van Scoy’s wedding. Synonymous with romance and complementary to the blush bridesmaids’ dresses, the florals fit the couple’s vision of a fairy tale-worthy wedding. Feeling showered with love and well wishes from friends and family on their special day, the pair posed for this stunning snapshot to savor the essence of it all. “[Our photographer, Jenna Hidinger,] had the brilliant idea to use the red petals from the aisle to shower down on us,” Brianna says. “The Scottish Rite Cathedral has such amazing architectural details, and this picture just encapsulated the entire feeling of the day.” Brianna encourages couples to invest in a photographer who can visualize creative scenes, like this one. “You have these pictures for the rest of your life,” she says. “Make sure you get someone who knows what they are doing and is willing to work to make sure every special moment is captured for you to look back on.” W
