Get Inspired From the first save the date to the final piece of cake, you’ll find the perfect details to complete your dream vision.

Lendable Linens traveled to the Gasparilla Inn in Boca Grande, Fla., for the wedding of Nick Rossi and Marshall Bush, daughter of George H. W. Bush’s youngest son, Marvin.

Best Dressed Headquartered in Pittsburgh, Lendable Linens prides itself on dependable service, customer satisfaction, and a comprehensive selection of linens that can be customized for parties, events, and weddings. For General Manager Ed Amori, every season is wedding season. He and his polished team prep for prospective client meetings by creating a vision board to help simplify the picking process. “We are often told, ‘This was the easiest meeting we’ve ever had,’ because the choices were visual, down to the shapes of the tables,” says Amori, who recently did the rehearsal dinner and wedding of Nick Rossi and Marshall Bush, daughter of George H. W. Bush’s youngest son, Marvin, in Boca Grande, Fla., at the Gasparilla Inn (shown above). For 2016, beautiful neutrals, such as blush, champagne, and ivory, continue to trend strong, as well as all things texture, i.e., iridescent sequins and flurries of bugle beads. “People love that sporadic shimmer,” Amori says. “We have fabrics that are heavier and more intricate coming in from all over the world. They are stunning.” Amori suggests that couples add punchier fabrics to the cake and bridal tables, and use simpler materials on the guest tables, especially if they’re on a budget. For an added dash of flash, “We would mix a blush bark with a blush lace, and maybe a damask pattern in champagne and blush,” he says. “The combination is stunning.” Lendable looks to PANTONE for color trends, and projections from women’s fashion and home goods, too. “Mauve is making a huge comeback,” Amori says. “Though, it’s now considered a dusty rose.” Look for Lendable’s work on MAY 7 at the 18th Annual PNC Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy Spring Hat Luncheon. GREEN IS THE NEW PINK “It used to be that you never used greenery,” Karrie Hlista of Karrie Hlista Designs says of brides and their flowers. “Brides used absolutely none in their bouquets or centerpieces.” Recently, though, the floral winds have shifted, and Hlista is finding that many customers desire a more organic appearance. “Now they’re becoming a part of the design, taking more of a forefront.” To achieve the natural aesthetic, she suggests seeded and silver dollar eucalyptus in centerpieces, which achieve an airy, earthy look. On long, farm tables, try garlands and succulents to add color and texture. “They’re also great for incorporating candles.” Of course, we don’t want to lose all of the bright tones, so for flowers that pair well with a lot of greenery, Hlista recommends cabbage roses, peonies, and anemones. All delicate and ethereal in appearance, these flowers complement without overpowering the greens. Sweet Somethings

Ask about Life Is Sweet’s 35 gourmet cupcake flavors, which include raspberry Italian buttercream frosting, almond, chocolate marshmallow, and tiramisu!

Having celebrated its first anniversary last October, Life is Sweet Bakery Café in Mt. Lebanon not only caters to commuters and the community, but brides and grooms, too. Aside from sandwiches, custom salads, and homemade soup, the shop offers cupcakes, cakes, pastries, handmade confections, and cookies and bars for its epicurious clientele. Personalized desserts or favors in the form of dark coconut bark, assorted truffles, and salted caramels (all shown here), to name a few, are available for weddings, bridal showers, and bachelorette parties. “We make our own modeling chocolate, which we use to personalize Oreos and other things, like monograms on cupcakes. It tastes a lot better than fondant,” co-owner Kelly Bareford says. The seasoned home baker and her equally talented business partner, Christine Mains, make everything from scratch with the exception of danishes — still sold fresh daily. “We thought the area needed something like this,” Bareford says. “We have wonderful coffee from local roaster 19 Coffee and WiFi. We offer our space for baby and bridal showers, and events for 30 to 35 people with the purchase of product.” Bareford and Mains upgraded the building with warm paint hues, granite counter tops, private dining areas, crisp décor, and an upstairs space for parties and classes. In fact, MARCH 30 kicks off its six-week yoga session — the second of its kind — on Wednesdays at 9:30 a.m., taught by Dana Barone of Yoga Innovations. Adds Bareford, “We’re happy to provide a gathering place, our sweets, and yoga to the community, and anything for a wedding, well, we love.” Life Is Sweet Bakery Café, 1105 Bower Hill Road, Mt. STEP IT UP Pure Barre Platform classes are arriving in Pittsburgh this March, just in time for brides to step up their fitness plan leading up to their wedding date. The new fast-paced class takes the traditional pieces of the Pure Barre class that we all know and love, and incorporates a “platform,” for what Mt. Lebanon and Peters Township owner Melissa Dellovade calls “one of the toughest” hour-long fitness classes. Combining quick bursts of intense, yet low impact, cardio with musclesculpting movements, Pure Barre Platform increases overall body strength while also providing cardiovascular results. “The combination of Pure Barre and Platform gives you everything you need,” Dellovade says. “Physically, the mixture of the toning you get in Pure Barre and the extra calorie-burning cardio bursts you get in Platform provide amazing results. Pure Barre and Platform push you to work past your limits and create a strong you — physically and mentally.” The studio also offers “barre-ties” or private Pure Barre parties to kick the bachelorette party up a notch, or to get hearts pumping the morning of the bridal shower or even the wedding day. And as always, brides and bridesmaids can sign up for three months of unlimited classes for just $375! Offers vary by location. Pure Barre, 412.408.3335, Fox Chapel. 412.248.2424, Mt. Signed, Sealed, Included If a save the date is the first impression of your wedding, then the invitation is a heavily anticipated sneak peek. With that in mind, brides are embracing feminine, flirty stationery as a preview of their big day. Glitter and foil liners in stripes and polka dots layered with vintage botanical florals are strong trends many brides know that they want. The verbiage on the invitation is sometimes difficult to navigate in today’s modern world. “We find that we are doing invitations that lean toward being more inclusive,” says Evvy Diamond, co-owner of Nota Bene. “Traditionally, the bride’s parents’ names, or the parents hosting, would be the only names listed on the invitation. A majority of brides choose to add the groom’s parents, regardless of who is hosting the wedding. We tend to err on the side of etiquette but realize that sometimes that is not feasible. In those situations, we err on the side of caution to avoid alienating family members and regretting text that will live on the invitation long after the wedding is over. Just as there is an invitation for every bride, there is a solution, too.” Nota Bene, 9 Brilliant Ave., Aspinwall. 412.782.6300. notabenepaper.com. — A.D.

One of a Kind Jody Wimer, Garnish Event Design CEO and creative director, shares the best ways to make your wedding more personal. WHIRL WEDDING GUIDE: Brides spend a lot of time choosing the right color scheme. What are some unique ways to incorporate it? JODY WIMER: From personal items like a vibrant, colored clutch or shoes for the bride, to fun and quirky colored socks for the groom and his groomsmen, attire and accessories are always a great place to start to reflect your chosen wedding colors. Moving into reception elements, color can be repeated in your wedding cake design, a colorful signature drink, or place settings — colored stemware and patterned china are trending. WWG: Where can monogramming be incorporated into wedding décor? JW: Traditionally, monograms are showcased on invitations, cocktail napkins, beverage stirrers, and in lighted dance floor treatments. Also try fresh floral- or moss-covered monogram letters, a custom bridal clutch, a pin or embroidered ribbon on your bouquet, embroidered shirt cuffs, monogrammed sugar cookies, or a wooden or metal cake topper. WWG: How can brides include sentimental pieces on the big day? JW: Many brides wear a refurbished veil from a loved one, or have our Garnish floral designers wrap their bouquet with cuttings from a relative’s wedding gown or accent it with a piece of jewelry or prayer beads. Showcase your style and what you truly like as a couple, and don’t become overly concerned in matching what is trending. Garnish Event Design, 724.498.0279. garnisheventdesign.com. — A.D.

Radiant Read You most likely know Alexis Wolfer from her wildly successful website, TheBeautyBean. Launched in 2009, the online women’s magazine was founded to bring women their beauty, fitness, and wellness fix. “I designed our site to promote better body image, prevent eating disorders, and help women lead healthier, happier lives by making holistic, empowered choices,” says Wolfer, a resident of L.A. Her quest to inspire women continues with the release of her second book, “Radiant Bride: The Beauty, Diet, Fitness, And Fashion Plan For Your Big Day.” “For the vast majority of women, it is their single moment where all eyes are on them,” she says. “They are looking to do anything, and put resources into looking and feeling their best but don’t know where to start.” So what makes “Radiant Bride” different from other bridal books on the market? “A holistic and individual approach — no body is alike,” she says. Among the pages you’ll find a 21-day, healthful detox plan; “Radiant Bride”-approved cocktail recipes; fittings 101; a day-of survival guide; skin care advice for the groom; a guide to all things honeymoon; toning tips; and much more! “The fitness section really sets the book apart, too, because it focuses on your dress style,” Wolfer says. “You won’t waste all day in the gym doing squats if no one’s going to see your butt because you’re wearing a big ball gown.” From finding the perfect dress silhouette for your body type, to DIY face masks for radiant wedding skin (something the author is known for!), Wolfer covers it all in an educational and fun approach. “Assuming that most women are working full-time, they’re trying to maintain their relationships — now they’re a full-time party planner and then, you want them to be a personal trainer and a dietician, too,” she says. “You can’t do it all.” Live a “radiantly happy ever after” using Wolfer’s tips in her final chapter, which addresses beauty beyond the big day, postnuptial fitness, and keys to a happy marriage. “Feel empowered to be your own nutritionist and personal trainer in a way that’s really time efficient.” We’re all for that! To purchase a copy, visit amazon.com. Follow Wolfer’s tips on Instagram @alexiswolfer. — A.B.S.

Lovely Lace Glitter & Grit is growing its selection in breathtaking ways this spring. “We’re really excited about expanding our collection from Anais Anette,” says boutique owner Erin Szymanski. The bridal label comes from two sisters in Toronto who have created a collection that “exudes femininity, strength, and independence in equal parts.” “It’s a really great mix of a little touch of classic vintage with lace and soft colors like nudes, but then some really modern silhouettes and fresh designs,” Szymanski says of the collection. • For Jessica Pecyna and Dan Murtha’s wedding at the Kimpton’s Hotel Monaco Pittsburgh, the bride’s overall romantic, classic style and soft, velvety color scheme called for a look that was delicate, but still bridal. Panei and hair artist Amanda Herb achieved just that! • Panei gave Jessica smooth skin with a pale blush, and blended out earth tones for her eyes, topped off with a pair of wispy false eyelashes for that doe-eyed effect. Her rosy lipstick color paired well with everything from her flowers to her dress change. • The makeup colors Panei used for the bridesmaids, who wore black dresses to match the floor at Hotel Monaco, were complementary to Jessica’s and didn’t distract from their overall look.

Pick a Palette So you’ve picked a palette for your flowers, linens, and just about everything else for your wedding day, but have you considered choosing a makeup color palette for yourself and your bridesmaids? “Selecting a makeup color palette prior to your big day is essential in keeping you and your ‘maids all complementary to each other,” says professional makeup artist Valarie Panei. “It helps you to control the style and ensure that your day looks exactly how you envision it to be — right down to the makeup.” Panei personalizes her services for each bride and bridal party, assisting with details such as finding a lipstick color that flatters the bride and also pairs well with her flowers and her bridesmaids’ dress colors. And, to achieve a look

FROM DAWN ’TIL DUSK Planning a wedding requires millions of decisions, arrangements and adjustments — from finding the perfect dress, to selecting the hair and makeup. Brides lust for a look that all their guests will remember and stay-all-day hair and makeup should be the least of her worries. Since every Posh Salon stylist attends ongoing education and classes to be on top of new trends and techniques, they’re easily able to recreate the latest and most popular styles that won’t wear off. “A healthy skin care routine should already be in place weeks before the wedding date,” says Martin-Campbell. Posh Salon recommends Dermalogica, a skin care line that caters to all skin types and corrects issues such as acne, premature aging, fine lines, dark circles under the eyes, dry skin, oily skin, and sensitive skin. Shiny, healthy hair begins before the big day, too, and she recommends using Kérastase products to transform hair into its best possible shape. “Even hair damaged from over processing or heat can make its way back to life with the amazing Thérapiste regimen,” she says.

Posh makeup artists are trained to highlight and contour using Mirabella makeup. The salon-exclusive brand features illuminating highlighters, skin perfecting tinted crèmes, weightless concealers, sun-kissed bronzers, moisturizing velvet lip pencils, high pigmented eye shadows and blushes, ten-hour wear lipsticks, and luxe glosses to complete any and every type of desired look. “When paired with the Dermalogica Skin Perfect Primer and finished with the Model in a Bottle Make-Up Setting Spray, make-up is sure to last all day and night, looking flawless and fresh in pictures from start to finish,” she says. On the day of, treat your hair to Kérastase’s Elixir Ultime line with the serum to smooth ends and the new bi-phase spray oil to thicken, boost volume, and add shine.

For a hairstyle that lasts, Martin-Campbell recommends Kérastase’s V.I.P. dry volumizing and texturing spray, which gives hair immediate body, grip, and a strong yet re-shapable hold. And, to ensure that your hair and makeup look great long after a stylist works their magic, ask if sample or travel sizes of the products they used are available for touchups throughout the day!

You’re Invited From save the dates through the thank-you notes, getting married can require a lot of paper. Invitations Plus does it all and more! The store features top paper companies like Crane, Carlson Craft, Checkerboard, and more to offer clients plenty of options to match any theme they have in mind for their wedding. Within the past six months, invitations with laser cut designs have been popular amongst brides, says owner Yvonne Stein. “Brides love them because the design is beautiful, lacy, and intricate,” she says. “I’ve also seen an emphasis on really nice borders, incorporating tree leaves for example, as well as interesting edges, irregular edges, and embossed rope edges — that’s another trend.” Invitations Plus also offers services such as printed envelopes (if the bride provides the guest list) and custom, in-store printing options, including incorporation of photographs, for those planning smaller affairs. Plus, brides who use its services receive a 20-percent discount on wedding invitations! Invitations Plus, 1406 S. Negley Ave., Squirrel Hill. 412.421.7778. invitationspluspgh.com. — L.P.

Miller says watercolorinspired color palettes, especially those featuring PANTONE’s Colors of the Year, Rose Quartz and Serenity, will continue to gain popularity this year. We love how this reception carries the whimsical feel throughout every element!

GET IT TOGETHER Local couples who plan on hosting their nuptials in Ohio can still rely on the incredible products and services offered by All Occasions Party Rental and Marbella Event Furniture & Decor Rental! A new 3,400-square-foot showroom in Beachwood, Ohio, gives brides the chance to physically peruse everything the event experts have to offer. “A picture can only do so much, so to actually bring our product out to brides in that area is a huge step for us,” says Allison Miller, senior marketing director of All Occasions Party Rental. A popular service that Marbella provides is event branding, which is all about making any wedding or event stand out from the rest. “They want their wedding to look a certain way and different from the last wedding that they’ve seen,” Miller explains. “The event branding capabilities that we have are designing and printing on our products, as well as transforming already existing elements of a venue like decaling a dance floor or creating a backdrop on a wall so brides can really customize their events on a bigger scale.” By thinking ahead to plan out all of the branded elements, the big day will come together beautifully and without added stress. “The one thing that I always push, especially for event branding, is to have a cohesive look, which you can work on with both All Occasions and Marbella,” says Miller. “I think that makes the whole process easier rather than stressing out at the last minute.” All Occasions Party Rental, 3600 Liberty Ave., Bloomfield. 412.471.2100. 72 Wilson Road, Eight Four. 724.745.1500. 23533 Mercantile Road, Beachwood, Ohio, 216.831.1245. allparty.com. Mix and Match “The vintage trend is here to stay,” says Vintage Alley Rentals owner Trish Derry. Due to recent demand, she maintains a flourishing inventory of vintage furniture and pieces available to rent for weddings, events, photo shoots, and film sets. “I watch the trends and manipulate my pieces,” she says. Much of her reserve is available to check out at The Vintage Alley Cottage, which is also available for small, intimate tea parties, birthday celebrations, sophisticated bachelorette parties, or elopements. “The cottage is a great way to view our eclectic collection,” Derry says. “I’ve built some great relationships with antique dealers and at places like Construction Junction.” If you’re in the market to sell, she’ll purchase your pieces to add to her array of offerings. “Not only do brides rent from us, but many sell to us, too, versus listing the items on Craig’s List post-wedding.” Recently, Derry has launched Vintage Alley Rentals’ sister company, The Pop Up Pittsburgh Wedding Co., which consists of a 90-minute, all-inclusive ceremony and celebration for up to 20 guests, and includes flowers, a photographer, an officiant, a day-of planner, the venue, and a styled set of vintage pieces. “This is a great concept for people that do not want a huge wedding — people on a budget (but you still get all the beauty) — second marriages, and also same sex marriages,” Derry says. “In both businesses, we work within everyone’s budget and will style according to the couple’s taste and desired vibe.” Vintage Alley Rentals, 10913 Perry Hwy., Wexford. 412.735.9765. vintagealleypittsburgh.com. GETTING CREATIVE A growing trend in the world of wedding florals is the freedom to mix it up! Ken Milko, owner of Flowers in the Attic, says pulling bright sorbet colors, soft neutrals, metallic details, and natural outdoor elements together is the best way to create these eclectic bouquets and centerpieces. For over 25 years, Milko and his team of experts have built a stellar reputation in the industry by combining the latest trends with each couple’s specific vision to achieve the beautifully unique arrangements of their dreams. Along the way, they’ve also perfected Flowers in the Attic’s signature set up: flowers under glass. By lining up rows of different colors and kinds of flowers under a sheet of glass, they create a whimsical mosaic display without crushing the delicate petals. “It works great for the escort table and the cake table as well,” says Milko. “I have been doing flowers under glass for many years now, and am pretty much the only florist I know that is doing it.” Flowers in the Attic, 7505 Saltsburg Road, Penn Hills. 412.798.2200. flowersintheattic.com. — Rachel Jones

Piece of Cake With three generations of classic Italian recipes, refined baking techniques, and a repertoire of delicious baked goods, Moio’s Italian Pastry Shop has all of the ingredients to bake the perfect wedding cake. The shop’s rich history of love and family bonds shines through their dedication to creating the cake of every couple’s dreams. “At my bakery, it seems to be simpler is better,” says owner Tony Moio. Though catering for a large number of guests can be daunting task at first, Moio’s works with their clients so they can easily stay within budget without compromising great taste. “A lot of wedding cake pictures online show off the rolled fondant cakes, which are beautiful in design, but at $10 a slice, they can be costly,” says Moio. “And to me, the taste doesn’t justify the look.” Moio suggests opting for dessert tables or for a smaller wedding cake with a sheet cake to serve to the rest of the guests. Large wedding cakes can start around $800, but choosing a smaller four-tiered cake with a sheet cake can still serve a large crowd for closer to $500. “That’s a nice savings!” Moio’s Italian Pastry Shop, 4209 William Penn Hwy., Monroeville. 412.372.6700. moios.com. — J.P.

RIDE IN STYLE Keep the transportation situation for your celebration hassle free with Shamrock Limousine. The sleek rides can take you to and from the ceremony and reception, as well as provide airport and shuttle services for bachelor or bachelorette parties, with awardwinning style and service. Grace Ball, director of communications, says Shamrock Limousine was recently recognized with a Couple’s Choice Award® by Wedding Wire, as well as The Knot’s Best of Weddings for 2016. “The WeddingWire Couples’ Choice Awards® 2016 recognizes the top five percent of wedding professionals in the WeddingWire Network who demonstrate excellence in quality, service, responsiveness, and professionalism. The Knot Best of Weddings award represents the top two percent of highest-rated wedding professionals reviewed by real couples, their families, and wedding guests,” she explains. “We are proud to be one of the top transportation providers in the Pittsburgh wedding network. We value all of our clients and truly appreciate the positive feedback that helped us earn the awards.” Shamrock Limousine, 1501 Kennedy Blvd., Aliquippa. 877.288.4305. — K.W.

Force of Nature “Many brides come in with a dream wedding, and we encourage them to bring lots of photos and be as specific as possible,” says Carolyn Walker, co-owner of Bloom Brigade. “If they’re over-budget, we try to get the look they want and stay within their budget.” Bloom Brigade offers flowers grown from its own garden as well as flowers locally sourced from wholesalers in the Pittsburgh area, giving them a whole new world of fresh options. “We will grow things for brides specifically and we try to use less commonly used products,” says co-owner Suzan Krauland. This way, brides are guaranteed to have memorable and beautiful arrangements that are sure to impress their guests. One of the trends that Bloom Brigade specializes in is loose, airy arrangements. “This trend is right up our alley and we love that individual flowers can be showcased to really see each stem’s beauty,” says Walker. “We do this because we absolutely love flowers and it’s way fun!” Bloom Brigade, 910 Western Ave., North Side. 412.553.9006. bloombrigade.com. — J.P.

How Sweet From cakes to sweet stations, Bella Christie and Lil’ Z’s Sweet Boutique provides an entire dessert experience for its clients. The confectionary offers 12 over-the-top, interactive dessert stations, from mouthwatering donuts and fried hand pies, to fresh liquid nitrogen ice cream and a cookie dough station. “Making dreams come true for our couples, interacting and having fun with all of their guests, is the sweetest part of our job. It is so wonderful to see our passion of desserts really touch people!” says Bella Christie and Lil’ Z’s Sweet Boutique owner Kadee Lewis. When it comes to cakes, “naked cakes” are making their exit as the use of metallic colors and textures continues to rise. “We’re also seeing many couples wanting to tie in elements of the bride’s dress or a pattern, which is super customized and one-ofa-kind.” Flavor-wise, the shop’s traditional white almond with raspberry jam and a sugared almond plating garnish remains its most popular. However, nothing is off the table! Lewis and her team have crafted cakes in flavors like Funfetti, chocolate chip, maple bacon, and the list goes on. “Dessert isn’t just a food,” Lewis says. “It is an experience. With one of the last ways to impress your guests, why not make it memorable?!” For booking purposes, save the date with the bakery at least six months in advance as dates fill up quickly. Painting Perfect According to the Chinese New Year, it’s the year of the monkey, so there’s no better time than now to plan your bridal shower or bachelorette party at Paint Monkey! Enjoy drinks and snacks with your friends while you create a masterpiece that you can keep forever without breaking your budget. For those who worry that their painting skills are sub-par or they can’t keep up, Paint Monkey has a solution. “We hand-sketch every canvas so when you come in to paint with us, the anxiety is taken away and you’re able to be more social,” says Joe Groom, co-owner. Paint Monkey takes a gentler approach that enables people of all ages to enjoy the party. “Many times with bridal parties or showers, there are grandmothers and children since it’s a very social time. Sometimes they don’t keep up or they’re a little fast, but having the sketch on the canvas is key to ensuring that all have a good time,” says Groom. The cost is $35 per person for a two-hour painting session and $45 for a threehour painting session, and is not limited to just canvases! Co-owner Mary Lou Bradley suggests bridal parties paint pre-sketched canvas tote bags for a coordinated way to carry all of the wedding day essentials. Paint Monkey, 100 43rd St., Studio 212. Crowning Glory Branch out beyond the standard bouquets and centerpieces by utilizing your florist’s creative skills in every asset of your day — like topping off your wedding day ensemble with wearable botanicals! From the lush bohemian flower crown to the subtle sweetness of a single bloom pinned in an updo, the fashionable statement can be tailored to fit any wedding theme or venue. “Wearable botanicals have become popular with the bride that is looking for something outside the box to make her wedding a little different than the four other friends who just got married,” says Carmel Vandale, owner of Mt. Lebanon Floral. Let your flower girls get in on the fun, too, with adorable mini crowns, or coordinate your bridesmaids’ floral accessories to match the groomsmen’s boutonnières. “We love the drama of making large head pieces, but some of our favorites are the tiny, tiny hair pieces that are tucked in to the hair. So sweet and romantic!” Mt. Lebanon Floral, 725 Washington Road, Mt. Lebanon. 412.561.2500. mtlebanonfloral.com. — R.J.

IN YOUR FAVOR If you’re on the hunt for edible favors for your bridal shower, wedding favors, or more, My Favorite Sweet Shoppe has unique and delicious options. We can’t get over the chocolate-covered apples, Oreos, and pretzel rods that serve as mini versions of the bride and groom! “Having an item that is just as cute as is tasty is the best of both worlds,” says Nina Midgley, owner of My Favorite Sweet Shoppe. Who could resist these delicious little treats with every detail included down to the groom’s bowtie? According to Midgley, they also make a great addition to any cookie table. The bride and groom rods and Oreos are $5 per couple and the apples are $6.50 each for orders of 100 or more. “We offer discounts for large quantities to help brides keep the cost down without sacrificing what they want on their big day,” adds Midgley. As an exclusive vendor of Cavanaugh’s Bride Shows, My Favorite Sweet Shoppe will be attending the summer event at the Sheraton Pittsburgh Station Square on JULY 17. “I love to work with brides and their entourage because it means a lot to us that they trust us with something so important as their wedding,” she says. “Then, seeing them come back to plan their baby shower, or a friend’s wedding, is always exciting!” My Favorite Sweet Shoppe, 1597 Washington Pike, Bridgeville. 412.564.5416. — K.W.

Customized Cuisine “Cookie cutter weddings are from the days of long gone,” declares Nikki Heckman, owner of Bistro to Go Catering. Instead, couples are opting for more intimate, personalized receptions. Put your own spin on the menu by honoring your roots with dishes like the New Orleans-style Crab and Shrimp Gumbo pictured here, or serve up smaller versions of your favorites like a petite shepherd’s pie. As you offer guests the chance to get to know you better through food, let them learn more about each other the same way. Heckman suggests putting out antipasto or grilled vegetable centerpieces on the tables, which can double as a snack during the reception’s downtime and the ultimate icebreaker! CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS While every couple plans their wedding differently — and with different budgets! — the first annual Thumbtack 2016 Wedding Trends Report states that couples are investing up to 20 percent more (roughly $2,000) on their wedding services — excluding items like dresses, venues, and rings for a wedding with 98 guests on average — compared to last year. “The reception is the focus of this extra spending,” says Ashley Brasier, wedding director for Thumbtack, “with couples turning away from themed weddings and instead focusing on finer touches.” — J.P. HERE ARE THE TOP FIVE AREAS THAT EXTRA MONEY IS GOING TO: 1. Social Media-Ready Extras — 68 percent of couples want short highlight videos 2. Makeup and Hair — bold, glamorous looks will be 75 percent more popular this year 3. Formal Dinners — plated meals are 31 percent more popular this year, and requests for bartenders are up 42 percent 4. Themes and Color Schemes — as intricate details like laser-cut features rise in popularity 5. Desserts — three-tiered cakes are up 55 percent and cupcakes are on the rise + WHERE DO PITTSBURGH COUPLES FIT IN ALL OF THIS? TOP 5 MOST EXPENSIVE STATES TO GET MARRIED IN: 1. Connecticut 2. Lovin’ from the Oven Brides everywhere: rejoice! Wedding cakes are no longer the center of attention, as versatile cookies are sharing in the limelight as delicious wedding favors, part of dessert tables, and, of course, starring in the traditional Pittsburgh cookie tables. For those who want to give their guests a variety of delectable treats, Good L’Oven Cookie Shop has cookies worth swooning over. “I think there’s a trend for brides to look at bakeries for a different selection of desserts to offer at their weddings,” says Deanna Soost, owner of Good L’Oven Cookie Shop. While old fashioned cookies are still great (everyone will always love lady locks!), adding some new flavor profiles is a sure way to keep guests coming back for more. Good L’Oven’s cookies are always baked fresh, never frozen, and all the doughs are made with butter instead of margarine or shortening. “You’re getting old fashioned cookies with a new fashion twist,” says Soost. “You’re getting cookies that grandma would make, the same quality, but we can customize them and do a specialty cookie for the bride and groom according to their personal tastes.” They also aren’t afraid to experiment with different flavor combinations. “We come up with as many unique combinations as we can that we think will work in a cookie,” says Soost. Some of their popular flavors are red velvet,, caramel, chocolate brownie, chocolate pretzel, raspberry shortbread with white chocolate (our favorite!) sugar cookie, and the classic chocolate chip cookie. Their small cookies are great for a cookie table while their larger ones are perfect for wedding favors. “I’d love to see somebody do an ice-cream sandwich bar with the cookies,” says Soost. “You can dip them yourself and cover them in sprinkles and everything.” Yum! Table of Plenty Serving up the best baked goods for nearly 29 years, Oakmont Bakery sweetens up any wedding, bridal shower, rehearsal dinner, and more. From traditional to modern masterpieces, it also has witnessed the evolution of wedding cakes. “Today, many of our cake decorators have earned culinary and/or art degrees. Our decorators create absolutely beautiful cakes,” says owner Marc Serrao. The bakery combines artistic and culinary excellence for each couple. Adds Serrao, “Everyone loves choices — the more choices, the better.” For weddings with 50-400 guests, Serrao suggests couples choose a smaller two- or three-tiered cake with a dessert table filled with pastries and dessert cake to give their guests plenty of options. “We’ve been doing this for years now and it’s one of my favorite ways to handle dessert.” Oakmont Bakery, 531 Allegheny Ave., Oakmont. 412.826.1606. oakmontbakery.com. — J.P.

Dress Up Spring into dazzling new bridal collections this season at MB Bride & Special Occasions! We’re very excited about the new MGNY line by Madeline Gardner. “It is a gorgeous unique line of bridal gowns at very moderate prices with stunning couture looks,” says Jennifer Mason, store manager. The line features full, flowing skirts, crystal beaded bodices, delicate illusion necklines, and jeweled waistbands. MB Bride also just picked up the MGNY Occasions line for mothers of the bride and groom, or for black tie events. “Our Mothers section is huge and more stylish than ever,” says Mason. The ever-popular “Mommapolooza” blow-out sale for mother of the bride and mother of the groom dresses returned in February, and was so popular, that “Mommapolooza, The Sequel” is slated for March! Brides and mothers aren’t the only ones excited about the shop’s new lines. Flower girls can look forward to new dresses by Joan Calebrese for MonCheri, which feature some traditional flower girl looks along with mini bridal looks as well. “Flower girls don’t have to settle for the plain and simple any more!” For more events and trunk shows, visit mbbride.com. See how the grooms of 2016 are making a statement BY ANDREA BOSCO STEHLE + LIZ PETONIAK

The modern-day groom is going to great lengths to help plan for the opulent occasion. From fitness and fashion, to getting the groomsmen together, there are a lot of areas that must be covered before the pinnacle moment arrives. To get the ball rolling, we spoke with a few groom gurus who know a thing or two about getting ready for the big day.

It takes at least five weeks for a tuxedo to be made up, so the sooner you can make an appointment in the planning process, the better.

WORK HARD, PLAY HARD Taking on a new workout regimen before the wedding is about more than looking trim in a tux. It's about building the foundation for a healthier happily ever after. Exercise extraordinaire Ryan Deer, owner of WorkAht, works with husbands-to-be (and brides!) on a daily basis with four key factors in mind:

1 You must get active and approach your new lifestyle as a whole. 2 You should tell your fiancé that Does your crew know how to tie a bow tie? Larrimor’s offers day-of wedding services to ensure you and your groomsmen look on point.

DRESS THE PART When it comes to suiting up for the big day, nine times out of 10, the fiancée accompanies her hubby-to-be at shopping and fitting appointments, according to Ray Harney, sales associate at Larrimor’s. “Typically, she has an idea of what she wants and she’ll be able to make sure the fabrics and accessories look appropriate. We can take care of everything — the tuxedo, the stud sets, the socks, the shirt, shoes, bow ties, long ties, pocket squares, and vests — so they don’t have to worry. And, all of the tailoring is done in-house,” he says. In addition to tuxedos off the rack from Ermenegildo Zegna, Canali, and Isaia, Larrimor’s offers a complete line of custom suiting as well. “If there’s something the groom does have in mind, or does not see, whether it’s a silhouette or a fabric, we can accommodate him.” Several of the store’s vendors, including Hickey Freeman and Samuelsohn, deal only in fabric, meaning that every color, pattern, and texture is within the groom’s reach. Grooms can select from a peak or shawl lapel, a one-button notch, and both very modern and classic cuts, too. “What’s nice about custom is you can pick out the buttons and the lining, and those extras mean a lot to have,” says Harney. This year, Harney has seen a lot of dinner jackets and navy blue suits, a look that he loves. However, there are tradeoffs to consider, as a tuxedo is an investment piece many grooms hope to keep with them for black-tie events in the years to come. He says, “When you go for the trendier looks, you are expressing yourself, as opposed to going off the rack, where the desire is to look appropriate. We can really take care of the person who wants to stand out, and someone who wants to look both sharp and appropriate, too.” Larrimor’s, One PNC Plaza, 249 5th Ave., Downtown. 412.471.5727. larrimors.com. 44

you’ve set an achievable goal that you plan to reach by the wedding day. “Make it known and you’ll carry it through,” he says.

3 Put some color on your plate, and avoid processed foods. Whole, healthy foods are naturally colorful, and contain vitamins and minerals. (About 70 percent of weight loss comes from diet, not cardio!)

4 Make it last beyond your wedding. “If you are active five days a week, engaging in exercise or even prolonged walking, you’re going to improve your overall health,” says Deer. “Working out together is a great form of motivation for exercise and nutrition.” For more on Deer’s prewedding personal training, which includes in-home training, gym time, and summer boot camps, visit workaht.com. BENEATH THE LAYERS Groom’s cakes can be traced back to England’s Victorian era, when there were three cakes at a wedding: the wedding cake, which was served to the guests; the groom’s cake, which was served to the groomsmen; and the bride’s cake, which was served to the bridesmaids. According to Linda Metz of Prantl’s Bakery, the popularity of a groom's cake today goes in cycles but the style is pretty consistent. “We have found that groom’s cakes' designs target heavily on sports, colleges, and hobbies,” she says. "Many times, both the bride and groom choose the groom’s cake, and the purpose is to often show the characteristics of the groom to their guests.” Prantl’s Bakery, 438 Market St., Market Square. 412.471.6861. 5525 Walnut St., Shadyside. 412.621.2092. prantlsbakery.com.

INTERVIEW WITH A GROOM We asked musician Eddie Wiernik, a Pittsburgh native who planned a destination wedding in Arizona with bride Gabrielle Senn, about everything that goes into being a groom. HOW INVOLVED WERE YOU WITH THE WEDDING PLANNING? I played a very supportive role in helping Gabrielle and my mother plan for our big day. My one major role was to make sure the music, lighting, and video were in order. Being that our wedding was in Arizona, I had to interview vendors through Google Chat to make sure they were the right fit for us. Once the DJ was set, I created a playlist of music to make sure that the party didn't stop. WHO WERE YOUR GROOMSMEN? My brother has always been my best friend so it was easy to find the best man. My three groomsmen were my best buds from each location [I've lived in — Pittsburgh, Los Angeles, and New York.] WHAT GIFTS DID YOU GET THEM? My groomsmen's gifts consisted of both personalized- and location-based presents. I got them each a money clip/wallet engraved with their initials along with a matching hooded tank top, bathing suit, and sunglasses for the Arizona weather. HOW DID YOU DECIDE WHAT THE GROOMSMEN WOULD WEAR? From the get-go, I knew I wanted to be in a blue suit. After giving Gabrielle a yellow diamond ring, we both had decided that yellow and white would be a perfect color combination for our wedding. When shopping for suits for the guys, as cool as black and yellow would be, being that I'm a Steelers fan, I figured a lighter color such as gray would be more complementary. I'd be lying if I didn't take the weather into account. I didn't want the guys burning up in the Arizona sun. WHERE DID YOU GO FOR YOUR BACHELOR PARTY? Being that it was a destination wedding, I had two bachelor parties — one in New York and one in Arizona. In New York, my

44-53.indd 45

bandmates kidnapped me after a gig and we spent the weekend in Fire Island. Ocean Bay Park is an area on the island where we could drink, party, and swim on the beach. In Arizona, Brandon, my best man, coordinated an eventful 24 hours of fun. We started the day out with racing Corvettes and Camaros on a circuit track. We ordered two cabanas by our resort's pool where we swam and played ping pong. At night, we went to a couple of night clubs in Scottsdale. HOW INVOLVED WERE YOUR GROOMSMEN? My best man and my brother-in-law were a big part in planning my bachelor party. Brandon has always been the life of the party and John was a local of Scottsdale for a couple of years. The combination of the two of them made it easy to plan. DID YOU GIVE YOUR BRIDE A GIFT? We decided that instead of exchanging gifts at our wedding, we would give each other the gift of traveling to New Zealand. We are going for our one-year anniversary this year.

HOW DID YOU PICK ITEMS FOR THE REGISTRY? We already live together so instead of getting the "normal" wedding gifts, we asked friends and family to contribute to our honeymoon vacation in New Zealand. DID YOU HAVE ANY SPECIAL REQUESTS FOR THE WEDDING? Most of my special requests were for the dance floor. I wanted to make sure to celebrate my parents and have them dance to their wedding song. I also needed to fit in *NSYNC’s “Bye Bye Bye” so my sister and I could relive some of our choreographed dance moves from our childhood. WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF PLANNING? My favorite part of planning was knowing that the big day was right around the corner. We planned everything in a seven-month span, so it was constantly exciting. Read more about Eddie and Gabrielle’s wedding on page 63!

our honey popped the question — it’s time to pop Champagne! From your engagement toast to your reception, there are infinite occasions to imbibe, but what should you sip when? We’ve consulted four effervescent experts, brilliant with all things bubbles! “People who love Champagne love it because it’s refined,” says Bob Sendall, owner of All in Good Taste Productions. Though, in his 30 years of event planning and catering, he’s learned an important lesson. “For weddings of 100 guests or more, we don’t do a Champagne toast,” he says. “Sparkling wine should be opened, poured, and drank immediately while it’s extremely cold — it shouldn’t sit.” When served, he suggests pairing the beverage with rich foods like beautiful cheeses, an olive oil and brown butter pasta with mushrooms, chocolate (like his famed Toffee Taboo), and of course, caviar. “You want to bite into something that’s luscious and delicious,” says Sendall. “That, to me, is what Champagne is all about.”

Bob Sendall’s favorite way to indulge is with Champagne and caviar on homemade toast points with crème fraîche and chives.

Champagne vs. Sparkling Wine It’s essential to understand what differentiates Champagne from sparkling wine. True Champagne comes from its namesake region in France and is made with three types of most widely used grapes — pinot noir (red), pinot meunier (red), and chardonnay (white). Just remember: All Champagne is sparkling wine, but not all sparkling wine is Champagne. Outside of the Champagne region, sparkling wine is Crémant in France. In Spain, it’s Cava. In Italy, it’s Prosecco, Asti, and others. So what makes a Champagne vintage or nonvintage? Vintage bubbles are made from the grapes of only one year’s harvest, whereas nonvintage is a blend of different years’ harvest.

Sweetness Scale From brut to doux, the sweetness in sparkling wine comes down to the amount of sugar added.

Conscience Couplings SEAFOOD Choose a brut for its hints of pear, peach, and apple — a nice match for seafood or shellfish, particularly oysters, scallops, white fish, or sushi. Paris 66 Sommelier Renaud Daburon suggests a Mumm Cordon Rouge. CHICKEN

Get Creative! Savor Fresh Catering has introduced its now-popular sparkling wine Popsicle pour-over cocktail (the ruby red grapefruit and pomegranate flavor, shown here) as a memorable signature drink, a fun and unexpected toast, or a sweet ending to a small-plate service of seated courses. “It also makes for a refreshing latenight summer accent during your reception dance party,” says Wimer. Made with Prosecco, the sweeterstyle sparkling wine complements desserts quite well.

Go for a fruity bottle, like a demi sec, when serving poultry. Daburon recommends a Moët Nectar Impérial Rosé for its creamy, balancing flavors of passion fruit, guava, and spice. RED MEAT Imitate the intensity of filet mignon with an extra brut, which will lift the rich flavors off of the palate. A bright choice is Ployez-Jacquemart Extra Brut Rosé, which has a touch of warm baking spices, licorice, and toasted almonds that plays nicely with cuts.

TOP PICKS

For the Proposal Splurge on a vintage Veuve Clicquot, Taittinger, Dom Pérignon, or Perrier-Jouët.

For the Wedding Choose wisely, says Daburon. “Many people do not appreciate or know the difference between a Crémant de Loire and a Dom Pérignon.” For summer weddings, Prosecco is an attractive choice. “The fruity and creamy nature balances well with cured meats and many fruits as it’s on the sweeter side,” explains Savor Fresh Catering Executive Chef Ryan “Kap” Kapuscinski. Note: Universally enjoyed, the Italian sparkling wine is of better value when serving a large number of people.

For the Honeymoon

Surprise your spouse with a bottle of Moët Grand Vintage Rosé. It’s spontaneous, radiant, and romantic, synonymous to your honeymoon! “Rosé Champagne is also becoming a popular wedding staple for its quintessential blush retro appearance and feel,” adds Wimer.

Perfect Pairings Serving sparkling wine with dinner can elevate any occasion — Kap can attest. “Bubbly pairs well with anything from pizza to lamb; appetizers to heavy, plated entrées.” One of his favorites is Domain Chandon Sparkling Red. “It is my go-to on Thanksgiving as its lighter body brings out the succulence of turkey and stuffing, but has black cherry notes that enhance and blend well with cranberry sauce.” For those looking for a versatile option, Kap recommends a Blanc de Blancs varietal, made entirely from white grapes. “Its bubbles and acidity are great with cream or butter sauces, and fried, greasy foods,” he says. “It enhances and brings out flavors in fatty fishes and shellfish, and refreshes your palate after strong flavors.” Though, he warns, “Despite its versatility, stay away from serving it with acidic and spicy sauces.”

Everlasting Love Choosing the weddings that we feature in our Real Weddings section is an all-day event — and one of our favorites in the production of the WHIRL Wedding Guide. The editors gather around one table to sort through hundreds of submissions, marveling at the details couples have created for their big days. So brace yourselves — there are some gorgeous weddings in the pages ahead. But there’s a reason beyond beauty that we feature real weddings. To hear the stories behind the details — learning about the antique veil that

belonged to a grandmother or why a couple chose such colorful balloons — adds a dimension of earnestness and personality that we cherish from our readers. And every once in awhile, we’re truly taken aback by one of those stories. Read about Hannah and Matt, the couple pictured above, on page 84 to understand what we mean when we say that a stunning photo often only scratches the surface. So open up your eyes and lose yourself in inspiration to the tune of these 25 weddings, a glimpse into everlasting love.

Ashley Miller & Joey Haynos BY JULIE PAWLIKOWSKI PHOTOGRAPHS FROM WEDDINGS BY ALISA

Ashley Miller met Joey Haynos out on the dance floor, thanks to an introduction from her friend. And he didn’t waste any time! “Joey asked for my phone number at the bar and called me the next afternoon,” says Ashley. “We have been together ever since.” While celebrating their three-year anniversary, the couple enjoyed dinner in Washington, D.C., and a surprise limo ride. “After glasses of Champagne and driving around the Washington monuments, Joey reached into his coat pocket and popped the question,” says Ashley. “I was completely surprised and could not have been happier.” Their wedding dreams came true with a beautiful summer wedding in Pittsburgh. Hues of navy, blush, and gold gave a sophisticated feel to the Saint Mary of the Mount ceremony and Pittsburgh Athletic Club reception. Ashley turned heads in a Justin Alexander ballgown, featuring lace throughout the v-neck bodice and skirt, and on the coordinating cathedral-length veil. “I added a crystal belt to the dress for a pop of sparkle,” says Ashley. All 175 guests had their eyes on both the bride and groom during their first dance to Van Morrison’s “Tupelo Honey.” Ashley used her dance background to choreograph the steps for the big moment. “My husband was nervous, but we danced perfectly,” she says. “When we did a lift and dip at the end, the crowd went wild.” W

Dr. Gabriel Gonzalez swept Dr. Alexis Pelekanos off her feet the moment they met. When he arrived at her family’s holiday dinner with flowers for Alexis and her mother, she was instantly smitten. Both of their families remained close during the couple’s six-month courtship and even vacationed together at the Fontainebleau Miami Beach hotel. That’s where Gabriel’s youngest nephew surprised Alexis by getting down on one knee and asking if she would marry his uncle. (Aw!) Their families played an important role in many aspects of the big day, starting with the color scheme. “We chose the color purple because that was Gabe’s mom’s favorite color when she was alive,” Alexis explains. Throughout the St. Paul Cathedral ceremony and Wyndham Grand Pittsburgh Downtown reception, the doctors (she at Designs in Dentistry and he at Forbes Regional Hospital) beautifully fused their respective Greek and Mexican cultures in every way. Dinner included everything from lamb chops and spanakopita, to enchiladas and empanadas. For the evening’s entertainment, guests enjoyed a 14-piece mariachi band and even joined the Greek belly dancer on the dance floor! WH I R LWE D D I N G S . C O M / W H I R L W E DDIN G GU IDE

Emily Mallit & Michael Kryger BY ABBY DUDLEY PHOTOGRAPHS FROM LAUREL MOUNTAIN PHOTOGRAPHY

From their first date to their first dance, Emily Mallit and Michael Kryger’s relationship has been filled with romance. In a thoroughly modern meet-cute, the two connected on JDate before falling head over heels for each other. The proposal, a whimsical surprise in the rented-out Broderie Room of Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, set the tone for a fairytale wedding. Dressed in Belle’s gown from the Alfred Angelo Disney Fairytale Weddings Collection, Emily was surrounded by her six bridesmaids, all in Cinderella blue. Colorful balloons and white and blue hydrangeas, roses, dendrobium, and baby’s breath helped to create the overall theme of the wedding: a nod to the couple’s first movie, “Up.” Personalized touches paid tribute to the film, from the cartoonish cake topper to the first dance in the clouds to the song, “Married Life,” the movie’s theme song. Even more personal were Emily and Michael’s vows, a highlight of the day for the couple and their guests.

A theater camp brought Eileen French and Patrick Jordan together 20plus years before Patrick popped the question (with the couple’s dog, Cosmo) while snug at home. The cozy vibes continued at the Pittsburgh Opera, where 400 guests delighted in a seasonal-inspired celebration on a winter’s eve. Following the ceremony, officiated by Braddock Mayor John Fetterman, loved ones indulged in a comforting spread of sushi, organic chicken and dumplings, and braised beef brisket. Using a mix of metallics, like bronze and pewter, natural wood, and modern accents of glass and metal, “uber-mod” arrangements of birch branches, and florals in dark, dusty hues and contrasting whites embellished the space. With entertainment aplenty, a highlight of the evening was when Joe Grushecky performed the first-dance song, “Save the Last Dance for Me.” The bride’s father, David French, surprised the couple with a performance of a traditional Russian song by family friend Ilarion Suga. When asked her best advice for brides, Eileen says, “Hire the right people and let them do their job. And, definitely have a planner or coordinator for at least the day-of so you can truly enjoy yourself!” Adding a personal Pittsburgh touch, a burnt almond torte crust veiled the delicious lemon génoise and vanilla cake.

Elena Kakogiannis & Brittney Tyler BY ABBY DUDLEY PHOTOGRAPHS FROM ANNA LAERO PHOTOGRAPHY

After Elena Kakogiannis and Brittney Tyler met at an open-mic night in Lawrenceville, they became instant friends. Both from out of town, the two bonded over their new city, which became the backdrop of their relationship. “We fell in love with each other as we fell in love with Pittsburgh,” Elena remembers. Fittingly, Brittney presented Elena her ring at the West End Overlook with a perfect view of the city, and Elena returned the favor the next morning. Officially engaged, the two started planning their wedding around the theme of being “rustic, woodsy, and warm.” They achieved the feeling on the big day with the help of a planner (“Hiring a coordinator is absolutely worth it!”) who used tones of burgundy and ivory, brought out in bouquets of wild flowers, berries, eggplant calla lilies, and sunflowers. A string quartet at the ceremony created a beautiful moment for the couple and their guests. “Looking out of the window, seeing the sun shine through the trees, and hearing the sounds of the string quartet come through as all of our loved ones took their seats is our favorite memory.”

Personalized apple butter doubled as place settings and favors.

Champagne raspberry, vanilla bean, classic chocolate, red velvet, blueberry, and pumpkin spice cupcakes made up the scrumptious assortment.

After being introduced by mutual friends during medical residency at Temple Hospital in Philadelphia, Nina George and Abin Bandyopadhyay dated for a year and a half before he popped the question while on vacation in Anguilla. The subsequent wedding celebrated Nina’s Indian heritage with bright bursts of pink, orange, and gold throughout. The vivid coral on her bridesmaids was reflected in the eclectic bouquets of summer flowers, balanced by incorporating a lot of greens. “Take a deep breath,” Nina advises brides. “Get an awesome wedding planner who is going to be able to walk you through the steps and get you organized, and, most importantly, keep you calm through the process.” Her process included deciding on a blacktie optional event, an element that elevated the wedding, and choosing personal details, like playing Hindi songs and catering with Indian cuisine. “Remember to enjoy the day you spent planning for your family and friends.” 62

Gabrielle and Eddie, both musicians, recorded their own version of Meghan Trainor and John Legend’s “Like I’m Gonna Lose You” for their first dance.

Eddie’s parents gifted the couple a custom bobblehead cake topper to crown their pink champagne cake with chocolate mousse filling and buttercream frosting. “The perfect topping for a perfect cake.”

Gabrielle Senn & Eddie Wiernik “We thought instead of preserving my dress, it would be cool to have some pictures of he and I dressed up on our families’ dirt bikes, spraying each other with dirt and mud puddles in Pittsburgh,” Gabrielle explained of the dress’s messy future.

“Don’t stress the little things. Everything will be beautiful and will work out perfectly.”

Two years after being introduced as bandmates, and six months after the transition from “bandmates” to “dating,” Eddie Wiernik took Gabrielle Senn on a tour of Pittsburgh, ending with a horse-and-carriage ride to Point State Park. “I went to take a picture of the skyline,” Gabrielle remembers, “and when I turned around, Eddie was on one knee with the most gorgeous yellow diamond engagement ring.” The ring itself was as much a surprise as the proposal, a near replica of the fake one Gabrielle wore as a little girl. “I used to say to my friends that when I got engaged, that was the exact ring I would want,” she says. “Eddie had no idea about this story. When looking for rings, he had felt so strongly about getting me a unique ring.” The diamond inspired the theme of the entire wedding, held at the Montelucia Resort in Paradise Valley, Ariz. Her bridesmaids wore matching shades of vivid buttercup and held white calla lilies wrapped in yellow ribbon, while Gabrielle carried yellow and white freesia roses.

Caitlyn’s favorite memory of the day was her first-look with Christopher. “We got to pause, take a breath, and really focus on the significance of the day and everything we had experienced together that had brought us to that point.”

Introduced through mutual friends, Caitlyn Pryde and Christopher Morgan dated for three and a half years before the big proposal. He decorated their home to fit an “around the world” theme, complete with passports, souvenirs, and fun facts about each represented country. “The last stop was Sri Lanka, which he told me is renown for its sapphires,” says Caitlyn. “Next thing I know, he is down on his knee with a beautiful pink sapphire engagement ring, asking me to be his wife.” Keeping things nontraditional, Caitlyn and Christopher created a fun, relaxed atmosphere with an intimate celebration at PointBreezeway. Caitlyn made her way down the tented aisle, showing off her bouquet of white anemones, blush peonies, lavender, hypericum berry, and succulents. (Florists Julie Start and Bethany Kleppick were Caitlyn’s sorority sisters!) Guests enjoyed dinner from L.A. Taco food truck and corn hole games on customized boards. “It was important to us to use local and/or handmade vendors. Explore all of your options and try out new vendors who may be starting out,” Caitlyn says. “Everyone we worked with went above and beyond to make our day exactly how we wanted it.”

A cathedral-length mantilla with a matching border topped it all off.

Rebecca’s family has been members of the Rodef Shalom Congregation for five generations, making the ceremony extra personal.

Rebecca Klein & Michael Segal BY RACHEL JONES PHOTOGRAPHS FROM GOLDSTEIN PHOTOGRAPHY

The love between Rebecca Klein and Michael Segal started to bloom during their freshman year at the University of Michigan and continued to flourish through graduation, two years of long distance as she completed her master’s degree in New York, and then a move to be together in Chicago. After a surprise proposal during a spa day at the Four Seasons, plans for their wedding began to grow, too. Rebecca fell in love with the look of “bunches of flowers” after researching weddings from Europe to L.A. Her dream vision came true with a “cloud-like, draped flower tunnel” leading guests into the Rodef Shalom Congregation sanctuary, a chuppah with over 4,000 white dendrobium orchids for the ceremony, and a summer garden party atmosphere at the tented cocktail hour on the synagogue’s terrace. Back inside for the reception, 305 guests marveled at the whimsical floor-to-ceiling draping and soft blue uplighting in the completely transformed ballroom. By alternating four different floral arrangements and three different overlays on a mix of square, round, and rectangular dinner tables, the couple set an elegant, multidimensional scene. The magic continued inside the sky-lit atrium with twinkling blue lanterns dangling above a delicious spread of dessert options. “My favorite aspect of our wedding was that we enjoyed the best of both worlds by including spectacular indoor and outdoor settings during our big night,” Rebecca says. “Our guests felt like they were treated to a fabulous destination wedding right here in the heart of Pittsburgh!”

Alyia Smith-Parker stopped by Greg Gaskins’ house to meet up with a mutual friend, but she ended up meeting the love of her life! Alyia and Greg spent a lot of time together that summer and even kept in touch when they returned to their separate colleges for their junior and senior years. Four years of dating and a move to Alexandria, Va., later, Greg proposed after a romantic dinner. When the waiter brought out “dessert” — a single red rose on a plate with “Will You Marry Me?” written in chocolate — Greg dropped to one knee and presented the ring. The Pittsburgh natives came home for the big day, starting with a ceremony at Waverly Presbyterian Church. “My favorite memory was listening to Greg read his vows,” Alyia says. “For months leading up to the wedding, he was nervous about writing his vows, but they turned out amazing. Every word brought a smile to my face and filled my heart with joy. After he finished reading his vows, his groomsmen started clapping and eventually the entire church clapped. It was hilarious!”

Heather Rudy and Eric Wenning were high school sweethearts (then, for a little bit, not) before getting engaged at Stone Villa Wine Cellars. “I set up a whole scavenger hunt,” Eric tells about his proposal. “There was a blizzard that day, and my friend made a fake snowman by the lake.” After the instruction to “take a selfie with the snowman,” Eric pulled a ring from under the snowman’s hat and presented it to a very surprised Heather. Planning the wedding came easy to the couple, thanks to Eric’s experience as the owner of Wenning Entertainment. His best advice is to simplify the guest list by using the ABC system. “If you don’t talk to anyone on the B or C lists for a year, maybe they shouldn’t be at your wedding.” In the end, the two shared their day with 220 loved ones, though it was their time alone before the reception that made the biggest impression. “When we were in the room before anyone else to see everything,” Eric says, “It was a nice moment for us. The whole day you’re going from person to person, and to just be by ourselves and soak it all up was really awesome.”

Jessie Godina and Dan O’Bruba’s love story began when she filled in as his replacement at Orthofix. Her boss, who had kept in touch with Dan after he left the company, thought it would be helpful for the two to meet so Jessie could pick his brain about the position. Three years later, the only question Dan had was, “Will you marry me?” He proposed during a candlelit dinner on the sand in Jamaica and hired a photographer to capture the unforgettable occasion. The photo-worthy moments continued as the pair hosted a “contemporary chic” celebration before 250-plus guests. “We selected the Rivers Casino for our reception because it’s truly a hidden gem,” Jessie says. “Dan and I love Vegas, and our families enjoy trips to the casino. Having our wedding there really set ours apart from others.” Inspired by her Lazaro gown, Jessie incorporated a delicate palette of petal pink, blush, and gold. The band played as loved ones sipped Moscow Mules (in traditional copper mugs purchased by the casino just for the occasion!) and made their way to their seats, which were adorned with bottles of Cristal and Veuve Clicquot, and gambling vouchers. Following the four-course dinner, which included “to-die-for” short rib ravioli, guests enjoyed an abundant cookie table, assorted candies, and casino games.“As the sun set and the city lights began to twinkle, the uplighting transformed the mood of the evening,” Jessie says. “The ballroom provided a magnificent backdrop of the city and the ambiance was energizing.” 70

“I didn’t want cake served to every place setting because it would go to waste,” Ashlee explains. Instead, slices were available at the sweets table, alongside everything from her aunt’s thumbprint cookies to mini milkshakes!

When Matt Crum decided to move from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh, his sister-in-law asked a friend in the area if she knew any potential dates for him. The friend set him up with Ashlee Noca, and the two instantly connected. Over three years later, the matchmakers’ children served as the ring bearers and flower girl in Ashlee and Matt’s wedding! The bride walked down the aisle of St. Paul Cathedral while her mother’s cousin played the trumpet. The lace detailing of Ashlee’s gorgeous blush gown caught everyone’s eyes as she tried to hold back the tears filling her own. Keeping the rest of the day just as light and elegant as the dress, the couple incorporated soft, romantic lighting into the Omni William Penn Hotel’s ballroom for the reception. The curtains were closed over the grand windows, allowing the uplighting from the wall sconces and candles on the balcony to cast a warm glow. Dozens of votives and floating candles covered the dinner tables as well, alongside billowing arrangements of pink and ivory blooms. While guests made their way into the space after cocktail hour in the Urban Room, Gary Racan and The Studio-E Band got the dance party started. Sets continued in between each course of the meal, maintaining a fun flow throughout the celebration. “Every single vendor was amazing,” Ashlee raves. “Everyone went above and beyond, and everything came together even better than we imagined.”

She topped it all off with a delicate lace bolero jacket, which she removed for the reception. Working together on Capitol Hill, Meredith Gourash and Greg Dolan quickly added a new item to their agendas: spending the rest of their lives together. Before the Washington, D.C., residents started planning their wedding in the area, they reached out to The Event Group. Greg and his family have relied on the Pittsburgh event planning company to execute all of the major celebrations in their lives, so they knew the experts had to be a part of this one, too. “[Sheila Weiner] was phenomenal,” Meredith says. “We asked if she knew any D.C. vendors and she did. She was able to coordinate the whole thing.” The team achieved the couple’s “classic and clean” vision for the day, incorporating their navy, cream, gold, and pink color scheme in every detail. After saying their vows at the breathtaking Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle, the couple savored 10-15 minutes of quiet alone in the decorated Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium before the excitement of the reception began. “We wanted our whole wedding to be an awesome party,” Meredith says. Free Spirit set the mood for the fun night right away, playing three or four songs before guests took their seats. The band kept all 300 guests dancing throughout night, except when they took a break to enjoy the ice cream sandwich bar! Meredith and Greg even danced on the stage for a song, ending their performance with the groom crowd surfing. “It was seriously one of the greatest days,” Meredith says. “At the end of the day, we got married. Everything else was just an accessory.”

Jodi Butler and Kris Garmey’s love story began when Kris noticed Jodi, with whom she shared mutual friends and similar interests, on Facebook. “I found her adorable. We ended up going to Paris 66 for dinner and our relationship grew from there,” says Kris. After dating for more than two years, Kris proposed on a long weekend trip to Orlando. “We were sitting out on the villa deck, drinking coffee after a workout. Jodi was telling a story about meditating and I knew then that I could listen to her for the rest of my life. So, I got up, pulled a piece of bamboo off a tree that was covering us, tied it around her finger, and asked her. She said yes!” Wedding planner and designer Melissa Rees helped create a natural and organic vibe for the ceremony and reception at Eden restaurant in Shadyside to fit Kris and Jodi’s personalities by incorporating an earthy color palette of soft green and purple, and elements like bamboo, palms, and orchids. The ceremony infused music from the band Big Love and personal touches for an unforgettable event. “Since You,” an original song composed by friends of Jodi and Kris, played, while two of their best friends served as attendants, and dear friend Julie Demayaer wrote and performed the ceremony. “We allowed for an open mic experience and for any guest to say a few words,” Kris says. “We were brought to tears and deep laughter many times during this part.” One of the pair’s favorite memories from the day was dancing with their 28 guests. “The whole day was amazing.”

They returned to The Walt Disney World Resort for their wedding the following fall, starting the day early at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park. “Wehad the entire parkto ourselves and our photographyteam,” Jennifer says of their pre-ceremony portrait session. “It was a really wild experience to be in such a beautifullocation that is normally jam-packed with people and see it completely empty.” Close friends and family gathered at Sea Breeze Point at Disney’s BoardWalk Inn for the ceremony, where Jennifer chose to wear something a little more fitting for her personality: a gorgeous black tulle gown. Mango-colored calla lilies filled her bouquet and the archway at the ceremony, complementing the couple’s Halloween-inspired color scheme. “We reallyare nottraditional, and Disney’s FairyTaleWeddings gave us the ability to pick and choose what we wanted in our ceremony,” Jennifer says. “They also did literally everything; we just needed to show up. While college sweethearts Amy Phillips and Justin Smerker got engaged over the holidays (he popped the question with an engraved ornament!), they planned to celebrate their wedding on a much warmer time of year. The spring nuptials at Longue Vue Country Club captured the lightness of the season in every aspect. “Since it was a spring wedding, we wanted to keep it fresh and classic,” Amy says. “We stuck with pastels, including light pink and soft mint green, which fit perfectly with the gardens at Longue Vue.” Surrounded by lush greenery and 125 loved ones, Amy made her way down the aisle at the outdoor ceremony in a delicate, lace gown. The sweet reception kicked off with the couple’s first dance to Elton John’s “Your Song” and continued with a striking dessert spread. Bella Christie and Lil’ Z’s Sweet Boutique stacked alternating tiers of white almond and chocolate cake, covering the confection in almond buttercream for a simple, yet rustic, finish. While the Mt. Lebanon residents aren’t Pittsburgh natives, they still wanted to create a traditional Pittsburgh cookie table. “A majority of our guests had never been to a Pittsburgh wedding and were in awe of the variety, and that they could take them home at the end of the night,” Amy says. “It was a hit!”

Angela Lavrinc & Donnie Howard BY RACHEL JONES PHOTOGRAPHS FROM DAVID BURKE

A week before graduating from Penn State University, Angela Lavrinc’s friend set her up with Donnie Howard. Sharing an alma mater, Pittsburgh hometown, and passion for teaching, the pair had plenty to talk about over margaritas at Mad Mex and instantly clicked. Three years later, the couple shared a Memorial Day picnic at The Point. As they ate sandwiches and sang along to Lee Brice’s “I Don’t Dance,” Donnie reminisced on the week’s events: an anniversary dinner at Mad Mex, a Pirates game in the same seats as one of their first dates, dinner at Primanti’s where he asked her to be his girlfriend, and lunch at Mulligan’s in Hopewell where he first said “I love you.” “Just as I realized he had really been proposing all week, he was down on one knee,” Angela says. “It was by far the best moment of my life.” Rivaling that moment was the couple’s picture-perfect summer wedding at Destiny Hill Farm. Inspired by the venue’s breathtaking lavender fields, the couple chose an ivory and lavender color scheme. The outdoor ceremony meant the most to Angela and Donnie, who name hearing his personal vows and seeing her walk down the aisle as their favorite memories, respectively. Taking the time to incorporate personal touches throughout the celebration, including the shabby chic cookie table with over 3,000 goodies “made with love by loved ones,” made the day extra special for the couple. “Enjoy the planning with your significant other,” Angela says. “When things get busy and feel stressful, refocus on what is most important: the fact that you are marrying the love of your life.”

Emily Greenhill & Dustin Guidash BY LIZ PETONIAK PHOTOGRAPHS FROM FRED VERO

A “message in a bottle” led to a romantic proposal for Emily Greenhill and Dustin Guidash, who first met on a blind date after a co-worker, Dustin’s cousin, gave Emily his phone number. The couple had been together for just under a year when they headed down to Myrtle Beach for vacation. On the first night, Dustin suggested they take their chairs and drinks down to the water, even though it was getting late and windy. Emily went to rinse off in the ocean when she saw Dustin talking to a group of strangers. “He told me that the group of people were from Pittsburgh, too! A few minutes later, two of those ‘Pittsburghers’ were walking towards me yelling my name and saying they had a message in a bottle for me,” she says of the secretly pre-planned scenario. “They handed me the bottle and as I began reading, Dustin got down on his knee with the ring.” Emily and Dustin tied the knot in a beautiful outdoor ceremony at The Atrium in Butler, followed by a vineyard-themed bash for 280 of their closest friends and family. And, the surprises continued! The bride was shocked when Dustin and his groomsmen handed her the microphone as the DJ played “Africa” by Toto, her favorite song to karaoke to. She says that singing along with all her guests and watching the men do a choreographed dance was the most memorable part of the day! WH I R LWE D D I N G S . C O M / W H I R L W E DDIN G GU IDE

Arielle is lucky to have florist Cheryl Schilling of All in Good Taste Productions as her mom! She carried a stunning bouquet of garden roses, miniature calla lilies, peonies, ranunculus, stock, and dusty miller, while the centerpieces featured the aforementioned fleurs along with hydrangeas, variegated pitt, lanterns, and mercury glass.

The couple shared their first dance to Ottis Redding’s “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay.” Says Arielle, “Our dance floor was under a tent on the dock of Shem Creek in Charleston, so it was perfect!”

Tiers of red velvet, coconut, and strawberry sour cream pound cake were decorated to fit the day’s mint and blush color scheme.

Charleston, S.C., holds special significance to Arielle Schilling and William Houpt, as it’s where they met, and eventually got engaged! The couple traveled to the city for a long weekend in celebration of Arielle’s birthday, where, unbeknownst to her, he arranged to have 10 of her friends surprise her upon arrival. More friends and family members surprised the group at dinner that night, but the excitement was far from over. After he brought out a cake and everyone sang “Happy Birthday,” he dropped to one knee and proposed to Train’s “Marry Me.” “It was the best night, until our wedding!” Arielle says, as the couple naturally headed back to Charleston for their nuptials. The two said “I do” at Summerall Chapel on the groom’s college campus with a bag pipe processional, and exited as newlyweds through a sword arch orchestrated by six current Citadel cadets. “You have to kiss before you pass the last two archers!” she says. Their 150 guests made their way to the soft, lowcountry-themed reception at Cottage on the Creek, where Arielle’s mother surprised everyone with a steel drum band during cocktail hour. And, Arielle planned a surprise of her own: a bourbon and cigar bar for her hubby! “He was so willing to let me choose anything I wanted (as long as it wasn’t all pink), and I wanted to do something really special for him, too.” W

Haley’s cousin, Lauren King, assembled the bouquets of silk hydrangeas for the bride, bridal party, and parents of the bride and groom.

Haley Volzer & Alex Artayet BY RACHEL JONES PHOTOGRAPHS FROM LOREN DEMARCO PHOTOGRAPHY

Haley Volzer and Alex Artayet dated for nine years before he popped the question in St. Croix, but it only took five months to plan the big day! The outdoor celebration at Morning Glory Inn inevitably grew into a garden party-themed occasion. In the midst of loved ones and gorgeous flowers, Haley and Alex exchanged personal vows before the relaxed reception. Three themed food stations kept dinner fun, as guests enjoyed a Pittsburgh spread of mini Primanti-style sandwiches, pierogies, and haluski; a Labor Day picnic spread of pulled pork, mac and cheese, and fruit salad; and a deconstructed salad station to outweigh the heavier options. Refreshing John Daly cocktails served as the signature drink, and a dessert display of berry pastries, apple pies, ice cream, and chocolate and banana cream pies in shot glasses ended the night on a sweet note. “Don’t be afraid to do something nontraditional,” Haley urges. “We knew we didn’t want the typical reception with big round tables and fell in love with the laid-back feel of the Morning Glory Inn. It was such an interesting and different venue — exactly what we were looking for!”

Duckworth took center stage at the wedding, too, serving as the holder of the guests’ gifts and cards.

Having a wingman is nothing new, but when that role is filled by a 1961 Austin Mini named Duckworth, things move in a new direction. Ian Wisbon rebuilt the vehicle throughout high school with his best man and let it play a major role in his proposal to Betsy Ray at the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix at Schenley Park. “Ian managed to coordinate the proposal with race control and volunteers, and was able to take me out on the track in Duckworth,” Besty says. “He stopped the car at Turn 11, in a wooded and secluded area of the track, and asked me to get out. It was that moment that I knew something was up!” A whimsical and quirky theme carried throughout their celebration, highlighted by a color scheme of orange and pink, along with touches of gold and navy. The bride carried a special bouquet of roses, zinnias, fresh basil, and even an air plant as she made her grand entrance down the stairs of the Pittsburgh Opera House. “The moment was surreal and always brings a smile to my face when I think of it,” Betsy says. No wingman necessary for that moment! W

Hannah Reese & Matt Brown BY ABBY DUDLEY PHOTOGRAPHS FROM SUZANNE DELAWAR

When Hannah Reese and Matt Brown wed in front of family, friends, and their two children, one thing was clear: a wedding may be just one day out of many in a relationship, but the magic of an official union has the potential to mean far more. The two, who met when Matt returned from serving overseas, planned their big day with the help of Warrior Wedding, which asked veteran couples to share their love stories for a chance to win their dream wedding. They received the good news, that they would be walking down a very stylish aisle at the Kimpton’s Hotel Monaco Pittsburgh, after receiving news that was truly devastating. Their newborn son Colton was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy and given less than two years to live. Amidst what quickly became a stressful life in the hospital — with Hannah nearly trying on gowns at the hospital when time started to get tight! — the details fell into place and served as something to look forward to. “I wouldn’t change a thing,” Hannah says of day, which dazzled in shades of plum, fuchsia, lilac, and gold and overflowed with beautiful orchids. Her most cherished memory was watching Alayna, her four-year-old daughter, pull Colton down the aisle in an adorable wagon. “I’m so happy that they were both able to be a part of such a huge day in both of our lives. We’re just so blessed to have them both here with us,” Hannah says. “The whole experience was amazing. Good things do happen; you just have to be patient.” W 84

The cake featured four blissful tiers of white batter with raspberry jam, Italian buttercream frosting, and fresh raspberries.

With all of their time and funds focused on Colton, the couple had written off a wedding. The day was as much a surprise as it was a dream.

Kasey fell for the first dress she tried on at Anne Gregory for the Bride. The gown’s lightweight feel fit the beachy vibe perfectly, and she made it her own by adding customized embellishments and buttons trailing down the low back.

From the groomsmen’s floral lapels, to the display of ombre carnations on the escort table, the abundance of flowers complemented the day’s airy, romantic, and nautical theme with peach, white, gray, and dusty green hues. Kasey added a sentimental touch to her beautiful bouquet by wrapping the base in a piece from her mother’s wedding dress.

For high school sweethearts Kasey Chester and Adam Kail, their nuptials demonstrated the unconditional love shared between their family, friends, and each other. After Adam proposed over dinner at their regular spot, Cioppino Restaurant & Cigar Bar, the Strip District residents began planning a weekend-long bash in Stone Harbor, N.J., where Kasey’s family vacations every year. With the help of wedding planner Stephanie Fichter, and Kasey’s mother and sister, they incorporated all of the couple’s favorite details from the beach town into the celebration — beans from Coffee Talk filled the welcome bags, Springer’s Homemade Ice Cream supplied an ice cream bar at the reception, and guests sipped a fun signature drink called “Dock of the Bae.” “It was a surreal feeling walking around town before the wedding, running into friends and family who were all there for Adam and I,” the bride says. “But, nothing beats when I was walking down the aisle. I saw his face and he smiled and said, ‘wow.’ That was my favorite moment.” To wrap up the magical weekend, Kasey and Adam treated guests to a post-reception brunch back at the venue, and invited everyone to wear all white for a sunset sail, complete with beer, pizza, and breathtaking views. “The most amazing part of the wedding experience was just sharing it with our families,” says Kasey. “You plan your wedding in your head, but you can’t really plan how you feel that day. It’s just an indescribable feeling!” W WH I R LWE D D I N G S . C O M / W H I R L W E DDIN G GU IDE

Shall We Dance? BY RACHEL JONES • PHOTOGRAPH FROM A FIST FULL OF BOLTS

A

shared love of dance brought Julia Erickson and Aaron Ingley together, and a deep love for one another kept them together. The professional ballet dancers met at Pacific Northwest Ballet School in Seattle and moved on to working together at the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre and even starting their own nutrition bar company, Barre, throughout their 16-year courtship. To celebrate their nuptials, affectionately nicknamed their “Sweet 16,” Julia and Aaron returned to Seattle for a nontraditional ceremony and reception at SoDo Park. “Our wedding was a celebration of what we have,” Julia explains. “Not just our future, but our past, present, and future.” With dance weaving the connection between all three, this photo perfectly encapsulates the grand romance between the two. Taken during the first-look photo session at a pier on the Puget Sound, the organic movements came when their photographer asked Julia to lace up the pointe shoes she initially packed to serve as a prop. “I figured we’d have some fun,” Julia says. “We have this unique talent that’s perfect for photographs, so we might as well use it.” A natural flow of dreamy movements followed. With their glamorous ensembles juxtaposed with the industrial setting, this blissful moment reminds other couples to stay true to themselves on their big day — and always say yes to a dance with your loved one!
