The summer season is now in full swing here in Whitby. The weather was a mixed bag early June when some days were dull and misty, and the rain just poured, then later on we experienced a heatwave like the rest of the UK when temperatures soared and the town sizzled . Hopefully July will bring more hot temperatures so that we can enjoy barbecues and picnics, great family days down on the beach (perhaps even swim in the sea!) and lazy, warm summer evenings in the garden relaxing with a glass or two of wine!! SIGNS, SYMPTOMS & SELF-HELP FOR THOSE WHO SUFFER FROM HAY FEVER
Hay fever is a common allergic condition that affects up to one in five people at some point in their life. Symptoms of hay fever include, sneezing, a runny nose and itchy eyes You’ll experience hay fever symptoms if you have an allergic reaction to pollen. Pollen is a fine powder released by plants as part of their reproductive cycle. It contains proteins that can cause the nose, eyes, throat and sinuses (small air-filled cavities behind your cheekbones and forehead) to become swollen, irritated and inflamed. You can have an allergy to: * Tree pollen, released during spring * Grass pollen, released during the end of spring and beginning of summer * Weed pollen, released late autumn Many people find their symptoms improve as they get older. Around half of people report some improvement in symptoms after several years. Symptoms disappear completely in around 10-20% of people. HAY FEVER TREATMENT There’s currently no cure for hay fever, but most people are able to relieve symptoms with treatment, at least to a certain extent. The most effective way to control hay fever would be to avoid exposure to pollen. However, it’s very difficult to avoid pollen, particularly during the summer months when you want to spend more time outdoors. Treatment options for hay fever include antihistamines, which can help to prevent an allergic reaction from occurring and corticosteroids (steroids), which help to reduce inflammation and swelling. Hay fever can often be controlled using overthe-counter medication from your pharmacist. However, if your symptoms are more troublesome it’s worth speaking to your GP, as you may require prescription medication. For severe and persistent hay fever, there’s also a type of treatment called immunotherapy. 16
It involves being exposed to small amounts of pollen over time, to build resistance to its allergic effects. However, this can take many months or even years to work. WHO’S AFFECTED Hay fever is one of the most common allergic conditions, with an estimated 13 million people affected in the UK. You can get hay fever at any age, although it usually begins in childhood or during the teenage years. It’s more common in boys than girls. In adults, men and women are equally affected. You’re more likely to develop hay fever if you have a family history of allergies, particularly asthma or eczema. SELF-HELP TIPS It’s sometimes possible to prevent the symptoms of hay fever by taking some basic precautions, such as: * Wearing wraparound sunglasses to stop pollen getting in your eyes when you’re outdoors. * Taking a shower and changing your clothes after being outdoors to remove the pollen on your body. * Staying indoors when the pollen count is high (over 50 grains per cubic metre of air). * Applying a small amount of Vaseline (petroleum gel) to the nasal openings to trap pollen grains. Ticks are not just a passing irritation for your pet. They should be given equal consideration to any other health-care issue. Responsible pet owners neuter, vaccinate, worm, flea, feed quality food, exercise and socialise their pet. But how many people realise that ticks can also be a very serious threat to the health of their pet? Ticks are found in unusally high numbers in our area, especially up on the moors. This is another good reason to take tick prevetion seriously. Since the ban of certain chemicals used in farm animal parasite repellents, number have multiplied rapidly. Removing ticks from dogs who have not been treated with tick control products is nearly a daily occurance in our practice. Even in a very urbanised area ticks are a risk; in fields, woodland, the park, or even in your garden, ticks are there. They become more active as the weather warms up in May through until August.
Tick bites can cause Many problems including sore skin reactions, septic abscesses and transmission of serious/fatal diseases. Preventing tick attachment, and correctly removing any ticks is key to your pet’s health. There are a number of tick species in the UK. The most common are the sheep and hedgehog tick. Both these species carry the well documented Lymes Disease (LD) and other associated infections. New research shows that the number of ticks carrying LD in the UK is much higher than previously thought and that at least 15% of dogs have ticks during the summer, often without the owner’s knowledge. This means that the potential for undiagnosed tick-borne disease may be much higher too.
Tick checks should be performed daily. Immature ticks can be very tiny (less than 1mm), even when fully engorged with blood. Stroking your pet is a good time to search for smaller ticks and can be a relaxing, bonding time between you and your pet. When grooming, brush against, as well as with, the hair-growth to see any ticks that are close to the skin. Ticks will attach anywhere but do tend to prefer places with a thinner coat including the muzzle, inside ears, near eyes, armpits, groin area and inbetween toes. If you do find a tick on your pet, correct removal is of imperitive importance. Incorrect removal can result in:
•The tick’s mouth parts being left behind in the skin.
• Compression of the tick’s body: this causes fluids (its saliva and gut contents) to be squeezed back 86
into the bloodstream of the person or pet it’s attached to. These fluids may contain diseasecausing organisms.
• Puncture of the tick’s body: may spill infective fluids (full of disease) on to the pet, or on to the person removing the tick.
• Injury and irritation to the tick: can cause the tick to regurgitate (vomiting) infective fluids into the host, potentially causing a serious infection. Never pull, squeeze or leave a tick! Gently twisting will encourage them to let go with their mouth parts. Inexpensive, highly effect and easy to use tick removing hooks are avalible from us and many pet shops. They can be used on all animals, including humans!
There are a number of products licensed in the UK for tick control on your pet: All of these products must only be used on healthy animals and under veterinary guidance. Some products that are suitable for use on one type of animal can be harmful to others, causing illness and even death. Always read the manufacturers’ instructions carefully before applying any product to your pet. These products can last between 1-3 months and come in tablet or spot on form. Dog Tick control products often contain Permethrin, which is extremely harmful and often fatal to cats. Cases of poisoning most commonly occur when people mistakenly use a product that is intended for dogs on their cat. Poisoning can also occur when the cat comes into contact with treated carpets, pet bedding and even the dogs themselves.
