www.whitbyadvertiser.co.uk The calendar is about to flip over to April and here I am again signing off the latest issue of the Whitby Advertiser, wishing you a warm welcome as always to our magazine. The weather throughout March was quite settled with many sunny days, though a tad blustery at times! Many folk braved the winds and ventured along Henrietta Street and down onto the East Pier to walk on the extension that recently re-opened after being closed for almost 20 years. If you haven’t been down yet and plan to go, please do remember that the pier is an historic ancient structure dating back over 300 years, and great care must be taken of its uneven surface and unprotected edges, and the usual dangers of high winds and waves overtopping. Enjoy though – the views from the extension are fabulous! As I write this, the town is facing challenging times with the coronavirus outbreak and as a result we don’t have a What’s On guide this month as many meetings and events have been cancelled due to Government advice. It is heartwarming to see a great sense of community

in the town, with many pulling together and offering practical support and encouragement to each other, words of kindness and sharing local information, in particular providing assistance and support to the elderly and vulnerable. Local businesses and organisations are playing their part too, arranging local deliveries, takeaway food and in some cases providing food and support for emergency workers. By way of a change this month, the prize for our popular crossword is a bath and tidy for your beloved pooch, kindly donated by the lovely Sheena at Scruffy Pups, the family-run, friendly and caring salon here in Whitby which has been offering top-notch dog grooming services since 2008. Distributing 24,000 copies every month throughout Whitby and the surrounding district, the Whitby Advertiser continues to be the number one choice for local advertising. If you would like to advertise in next month’s issue, get in touch and we will do the rest! Let’s be there for each other this month folks and keep safe.

As many of the events and meetings notified to us for this issue have been either cancelled or postponed until further notice at the time of going to press, we have decided not to publish our usual What’s On pages. Any announcements we receive from organisers about re-arranged events or those still taking place will be published on our Facebook page.

NORTH YORKSHIRE FAIRY TALES AND MERMAID TORIES

THE MERMAN OF SKINNINGROVE

A few miles up the coast from Staithes at Skinningrove it was a merman rather than mermaids who was brought ashore. The story was documented by the Reverand John Graves in The History of Cleveland, 1808, a copy of which can be seen in Redcar library. He was told the tale by an old fisherman, Billy Camden. Billy, so the yarn spins, was out on a small fishing boat, a coble, with a couple of other lads. There was a bit of a swell and a storm closing in. They were going at herrings but not pulling much in when something large and heavy got caught in their nets. The catch was hauled aboard and to the shock of them it was a strange manlike creature with head, torso and arms of a human, but with a long fish-like tail. He was exhausted and barely alive so they turned the boat about and brought him back to shore. They carried him to an old cottage, cut him from their nets and set him down upon a bed. Once he was revived they fed him on raw fish and local lobsters, and he seemed very pleased to have something to eat for he was all smiles and chattering. He did not talk like a human but made skreeking sounds, around the edges of which there seemed to be the shapes of words. For his upper half he was a fine looking thing – handsome with, striking blue eyes, full red lips and long golden hair – if he hadn’t have looked so handsome and manly he might have been mistaken for a lady. From the stomach down though he was all scales and coils, which in a certain light shimmered like a moving rainbow. The people of Skinningrove were courteous to strangers. They nursed the weakened merman back to health there in the old cottage. People flocked to visit him and although no one could understand his language, and he just shrugged and laughed at theirs, they communicated with smiles and gestures. He was a real hit with the ladies. They found him funny and charming and were not at all put out by his scaly lower portion. It is said that more than one local lassie visited him after darkness fell over the town, and that more than one came out through the cottage door just before dawn broke the next morning 30

From ‘The Fairies and Mermaids of North Yorkshire’ Chris Firth 2020

after seeking comfort in his manly arms. This, however, is probably just gossip and hearsay, put about by jealous folks in other villages from down the coast. Even to this day, the lasses of Skinningrove are of a moral and virtuous nature. Despite enjoying his life in the village the merman yearned for his home. One morning, when his full strength was restored, he slipped out of the cottage and shuffled toward the beach. He was spotted by the local children on their way to school and an alarm went up. Skinningrovers rushed out of their cottages but before they could catch him the merman had rolled down the slipway and was away out into the open sea. The merman showed his good manners though. As the townsfolk watched him swim away he raised himself upward from the water to where his torso and rainbow tail met. He waved farewell to his kindly hosts. He skreeked out something in his own language, some farewell message perhaps. Those girls who were used to his whisperings interpreted it as a good luck blessing. Alas, with a final bow toward his gaggle of lasses, he plunged into the waves, and has never been seen in those parts again. The folk of Skinningrove were sad to see him go as he’d been good company. The men sighed, and more than one lassie had a tear in her eye as he slipped away. The young people of Skinningrove don’t hold much faith by this story, despite there being an official metal plaque near the bottom car park recounting the tale, along with a number of mosaics and artworks celebrating his visit around the town. But perhaps the departing merman did utter a blessing on the place, for it is lovely and peaceful there, with a beautiful quiet beach. And the natives do seem to be lucky with their looks. Many have long golden hair and bright blue eyes, and the young men of the village are said to be strong chested but as pretty as any maiden from outside of Yorkshire. However, this is believed to be due to their Norse ancestry, and nothing at all to do with the frisky Merman.

YORKSHIRE LOFT LADDERS, QUALITY YOU CAN TRUST!

These days most homeowners suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept – but where to store it all? That’s where Yorkshire Loft Ladders come in. The company, based locally, offers homeowners the opportunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50 sq ft of boarding and a light all fully fitted in less than a day from just £277 + VAT. But it’s not just the affordability of the package the company offers that makes Yorkshire Loft Ladders stand out as manager Mark Hodson explains:

‘Our watchwords are Quality, Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served tradesmen so our customers are assured of the best job. Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and Value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford.

Our business relies on referrals and we got a huge amount of our calls from people who have been referred to us by our existing customers - that simply wouldn’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles.

At the end of the day the old adage that happy customers lead to more happy customers is true and we work hard to make that happen for every installation we carry out!’ So, if you want to make use of your loft space, however big or small, call Mark on 0800 612 8359 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft!

MONTHLY VETERINARY ADVICE

COULD YOUR PET HELP SAVE LIVES?

Just like humans, cats and dogs can need blood transfusions too! Here at Becks we keep a register of clients who would be happy for us to use their pet as a blood donor if the situation arises. Sadly we do have to call on our donors from time to time and we are always on the look out for more clients and patients to join our register! To be a blood donor, your dog/cat must be: • • • • • • • •

Fit and healthy Between one and eight years old Weigh more than 25kg (more than 4kg for a cat) Have a good temperament Have never travelled abroad Vaccinated Not on any medication Females should be spayed or have never had a litter

If you would like more information about your pet becoming a blood donor or joining them on to our scheme please contact the clinic or pop in for a chat. We are currently in the process of updating our register so now is a great time for them to join!

Please remember here at The Beck Veterinary Practice we provide 24/7 emergency veterinary cover. Please call us on 01947 820333 if you have any worries at all with your pets.

Monthly Veterinary advice written by Brogan Proud There are several reasons a patient may be in need of a RVN of Beck Vets blood transfusion. • H aemorrhage after an accident such as a road traffic accident, a bad break or being bitten. • Some cancers/tumours • Auto immune anaemia

Once the need for a blood transfusion has been identified we then call the first client on our list who has stated they are contactable at that particular time of day/night and ask for them to bring their pet down to the clinic (We understand that not everyone will always be available so the more clients we can get registered on our scheme the more likely we will be able to find a donor at the time). Your pet will stay at the clinic with us for a couple of hours. We then clip the neck to use the jugular vein and apply local anaesthetic to the area to make it more comfortable for your pet.

We then use specialised equipment to collect the blood – it is very similar to what is used when humans give blood. Your pets blood is then connected up to the patient in need and your pet is given some food and water to help the recuperate. We like to keep your pet for a little while after the donation to make sure they are fit and well to come home. Once they are ready we give you a call and you come and collect your little hero! 74
