Spring is here and we can once again enjoy lovely warm weather with lots of 22 23 Baxtergate Through sunshine. Seeing the beauty of gardens and the surrounding countryside as The Ages nature emerges from winter - daffodils, crocuses and abundant new life in the hedgerows - all help lift the spirits and refresh the soul after what has seemed like 24 New Shop In Town a long winter. The challenges of Covid-19 are still with us, but we are now seeing much more positive news, and confidence in everyday life and our local economy is returning 38 Prize Crossword as we have a clear roadmap out of lockdown and the vaccine roll-out programme continues apace. Better times are getting nearer, when we can hopefully take advantage of the new opportunities that the ‘new normal’ is sure to bring. The 52 Safer Communities Whitby Advertiser is very much for supporting our local economy with its many small businesses and tradesmen, who have worked so hard to support our local 60 Line Ads community and keep us all going through the pandemic. The Whitby Advertiser gives the perfect opportunity for businesses to connect with both new and existing customers. With a potential audience of 24,000 62 Index readers, it’s the ideal way for businesses to reassure customers that they are safe and secure, and promote new services available to customers such as online sales and apps, click-and-collect, takeaway services and home deliveries.
OUR NEXT ISSUE:
Whitby Kiln is an exciting new business and our good wishes go to Matt Deadline for advertisers: and Martina there, who have gutted and significantly improved the former Doodlepots studio on Skinner Street. The result is absolutely amazing - a fabulous Friday 9th April new studio of innovation and creativity with new concepts and ideas catering for all ages, male and female. I recommend their fabulous ‘take-out’ kits featured in HOW TO their advert! If you would like to advertise in our May edition, please do get in touch as space is filling up fast. IF YOU ARE OVER 40 YOU NEED TO READ THIS, IT COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE! Do you value your life? It’s a strange question but many of us take it for granted. I would like to tell you a short story. One day a local man from Liverton Mines woke up and decided he needed an eye test. That decision was one of the most important decisions of his life... His vision was fine but he hadn’t had an eye test for a few years. He had seen one of my adverts in the paper and rang to book an appointment. I put him on our Optomap scan and this showed what looked like a tumour inside his eye. He was referred to the hospital and the specialist confirmed it was cancer inside the eye. Thankfully it was seen in time and he got treatment which saved his life.
Optician John Prouse with the optomap scan
Opticians even though this was first invented in You may read about these stories and think they the 19th century! will never happen to you, but I have seen too many cases where things can just happen inside That is why I have invested in over £100,000 for the Optomap scanner to kit out both Loftus and the eye. Skelton Opticians with the latest life and sight The eyes are so important, they give you vision saving technology. but they are also the window to your general health. The scary thing is, at over 40, there are so The scan is not covered by the NHS. It is now available walking around right now with something inside to you locally on your doorstep. This is something your eye and you will never know about it unless that you will not find at any of the big chains. you see an Optician? The scan is normally £60. However, for a limited Even then, not all Opticians are the same. To make time because we are promoting this sight-saving sure you get a full health check inside your eyes, check, you won’t have to pay £60 for the scan!! one of the best eye scans you can get is called the Optomap. You may be thinking ‘Opto what’? But Iet me explain... The Optomap is a machine that literally scans your eyes for problems on your retina (the very back of your eyes). Most Opticians these days have a retinal camera but the problem with this is it can only see 15% of the retina!
The standard camera is better than nothing but it’s a bit like going to the dentist and the dentist only checking a few of your teeth. The Optomap scan see’s nearly 5 times more than the standard camera and over 28 times more than the traditional Opticians’ torch. The torch is still used in a lot of 10
I am offering the scan half price, so you can get it for just £30 and this will include a full private eye test. Or you can even get it FREE when you join the eye plan, our membership club which gives you glasses at greatly discounted prices and unlimted private eye health checks. Not even James Cook Hospital has this tsechnology but you now have access to it at Loftus and Skelton. So, if you have not had an eye test for a while, or if you have had once recently with us but did not get the new scan then call one of my friendly team now on 01287 644211 for Loftus and 01287 650655 at Skelton.

23 BAXTERGATE, WHITBY, THROUGH THE AGES What a sad day it was on Tuesday 16th February to see the doors of 23 Baxtergate, Whitby close, for probably the final time, as a Solicitor’s Office. Seemingly the well-worn steps will no longer be trodden by clients seeking sound legal advice and expert counsel from within its walls? 23 Baxtergate is possibly one of the best preserved Georgian Town Houses in Whitby, indeed its imposing Georgian Façade, facing onto Baxtergate looks much today, as it is imagined it would have looked in the early 1700’s, when it was first built. A much later Victorian (1837-1901) extension was added in or around the mid 19th century to the south or rear of the property, possibly after the building was first turned into Solicitors offices. The property at one time ran through to New Quay to the Trustees of the Whitby Bank for Savings, in or Road, the site of what is now Trenchers, being the about 1850. former Coach House to 23 Baxtergate. The Savings Bank only required one room of the There is also an unattractive small 1950’s utilitarian property, presumably the ground floor of the by then extension to the rear, which was built to house the newly built Victorian extension, as this room, has to administrative offices of the Clerks to the Whitby this day a strong room underneath it, with a solid Magistrates Court. steel door. John’s son George (1843 – 1920) subsequently went Jarvis Coates died in 1739 and the property then into partnership with him at 23 Baxtergate and bought passed though the hands of the Wardle, Reynolds and 23 Baxtergate from the Savings Bank in 1889, when it Hunter families, before being sold by Joseph Hunter transferred to the adjacent Post Office. 22
Subsequently the last of the Buchannan’s, Archie (1872-1938) joined Buchannan and Sons, as it then was. Many readers will of course remember the firm of Buchannan and White, Solicitors, which was a later incarnation, created as a result of “an arrangement” between George Buchannan, Archie’s father and Robert William White, father of Reginald White (1887 - 1962). Robert was then senior partner at Seaton Gray White and Co in Flowergate and George was senior partner at Buchannan and Sons at 23 Baxtergate, whilst business rivals, the two men were never-the-less good friends. George knew that whilst Archie was a very capable Solicitor and had a good legal brain, but that he was “not at his best after lunch” and he realised that Archie would not, on his own, be capable of managing Buchannan and Sons. Robert’s son, Reginald White who qualified in 1913 and then and served in the 1914-1918 conflict ( as did Archie) , never returned to practice with his father Robert and was sent to join Archie at 23 Baxtergate, after the end of the First War, when the Solicitors partnership of Buchannan and White came into being. The well-known Whitby Solicitor, the late Peter White (1918 – 2000) then followed in his father Reg’s footsteps. Peter, like many of his time, served in the Second War and interestingly qualified whilst interned in Germany, as a prisoner of war between 1943 and 1945 . He returned to Whitby after the war joining his father Reg and subsequently becoming senior partner in Buchannan and White, guiding the firm and 23 Baxtergate to further prosperity, through-out the second half of the twentieth century and taking in, during that time, the practices of his relation Ernest Frankland, that of H Davis Thompson and of his good friend, Alan Saltmer. The creation of North Yorkshire Law in 2000 (an amalgam of Buchannan and White and George Cass Rylands and two other firms of Solicitors in Scarborough), starting with 8 solicitors together with around 20 clerks, secretaries and other staff (around 30 people in all) created probably the busiest period 23 Baxtergate had ever seen. Sadly, the firm has slowly declined in size over the years, until there was just one partner remaining at its closure. 23 Baxtergate has been occupied continuously as a Solicitors office for the last 168 years - one now wonders what the future holds for this fine building with its imposing and historical features? YORKSHIRE LOFT LADDERS, QUALITY YOU CAN TRUST!
These days most homeowners suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept – but where to store it all? That’s where Yorkshire Loft Ladders come in. The company, based locally, offers homeowners the opportunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50 sq ft of boarding and a light all fully fitted in less than a day from just £277 + VAT. But it’s not just the affordability of the package the company offers that makes Yorkshire Loft Ladders stand out as manager Mark Hodson explains:
‘Our watchwords are Quality, Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served tradesmen so our customers are assured of the best job. Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and Value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford.
Our business relies on referrals and we got a huge amount of our calls from people who have been referred to us by our existing customers - that simply wouldn’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles.
At the end of the day the old adage that happy customers lead to more happy customers is true and we work hard to make that happen for every installation we carry out!’ So, if you want to make use of your loft space, however big or small, call Mark on 0800 612 8359 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft!
