www.whitbyadvertiser.co.uk As we near the end of this extraordinary year, I cannot help but think back how very challenging it has been at times, not only for small businesses such as ourselves, but for everyone, from our young people in schools through to the elderly, needy and infirm in our communities, the key workers who have strived hard to keep our emergency services, food chains and other essential services up and running, and families who have really struggled at times, even to put food on the table in some cases. It has been a very difficult year indeed for many. As a town, the folk of Whitby have pulled together magnificently, a community of many heroes, and hard-working businesses who have given so much to keep us all going. A big thank you to you all. This month, we have teamed up with the Whitby Food Alliance, a collaboration of local charities, organisations and projects providing support and help in the community to ensure everyone has essential food supplies as these challenging times continue. Our graphic designer Graham has designed a leaflet which introduces the Whitby Food Alliance and gives information of what help is available and who to contact, and we are delivering this with the Whitby Advertiser to every home and business in Whitby and the Esk Valley. Please do take time to read this leaflet – perhaps if you don’t need help, you may know

someone who is struggling and may need help, or may wish to volunteer your time to one of the organisations providing community support? As you turn the following pages, you will find many of our loyal small local businesses and tradesmen advertising their goods and services. We know it’s tempting to go online and buy from the big retailers, or look for tradesmen further afield in the hope of a cheaper quote, but please do consider investing in your local community - support our local businesses and tradesman, and in doing so, help them and their families keep going in these challenging times. Many small businesses have invested much time, effort and money in adapting how they work offering click-andcollect, takeaway services and home deliveries as well as making their premises safe and secure, to give you a more convenient and personalised service, so please support them. My allotted space is almost full, so I had better bring my scribblings to a close by wishing all our advertisers, readers and everyone involved in the production, distribution and delivery of the Whitby Advertiser a very happy Christmas. Thank you for your great support in what has been a very challenging year for us all. Until our next issue, please keep safe and well. Stephen - Editor

TREE PRUNING ADVICE FOR HOMEOWNERS
A question by many homeowners is when should they attempt to prune a tree?
Most deciduous trees are best pruned when dormant, this is typically during the late autumn months or during the winter. Never prune in early spring, as many trees can bleed sap if cut at this time of year. The exceptions to the ‘deciduous tree’ rule are maple, horse chestnut, birch, walnut and cherry trees which all bleed extensively, even towards the end of their dormant season. These should be pruned in midsummer after any new growth has matured. You should consider that major surgery, chainsaw work and any pruning which is substantial, high, inaccessible, or requires a ladder, should be done by a qualified and registered expert, both for your own safety and also for the long-term health of your tree. There is nothing worse than an unhealthy tree in your garden, always consult an expert!

COMMUNITY INTEREST
COVID-19 AND COMMUNITY SPIRIT THE UNEXPECTED UPSIDE... The end of the year is a traditional time for reflection though we might be forgiven for wanting to put 2020 behind us without the need to re-examine events! But far from wanting to forget it ever happened, there are certain aspects of the last 12 months that bear revisiting and prove that there are more positive things going on in the world than negative ones. The UK’s response to Covid-19 has had an unexpected upside: it has demonstrated that we have an amazing capacity for generosity and community spirit at times of severe crisis. Feelgood stories about neighbours helping neighbours, clapping for the NHS and carers, and the heartwarming campaign of Captain Sir Tom Moore regularly graced the headlines, giving us a sense that all was not lost even as we battened down the hatches for a second time.
keen to stick with. According to a recent survey 68% of UK adults want to continue helping others even after the current crisis has passed. It seems we’re getting used to being active members of our local communities. We’ve been discovering the joys of shopping locally, nodding at strangers even as we keep our distance on long walks, litter picking in the local park, shopping for elderly neighbours and offering up surplus loo rolls. Even during the pared-down VE celebrations in May many people set up picnic tables in their front gardens and drives, waving to each other and chatting from behind garden gates and privet hedges as they drank tea or quaffed a cocktail or two.
The nationwide and regional lockdowns placed a huge emphasis on local communities and the need for people to help each other, particularly the elderly and vulnerable. Caring for others has always been part of human nature but the pressures of modern life meant it often got pushed down the priorities list. Being forced to stay at home means we’ve unilaterally developed a new habit of looking out for one another and it is one we’re apparently Who can forget the images of people singing on balconies in Italy? Or that over 750,000 people signed up to be an NHS volunteer? Or the hand drawings of rainbows in windows? This renewed sense of togetherness is a boost to our mental health, so its one that we should all work to nurture, not just for now but long into the future. Doing good gives us a rush, making us feel good in return, reducing our own stress and improving our wellbeing.
As we head into the new year we should try to remember that despite all the panic and fear that this historic global pandemic has brought, despite the uncertainty and the disruption, this crisis has truly illuminated the best of humanity. We’ve witnessed a revolution of kindness and communities coming together just when we needed it most. Don’t let it die. 24

YORKSHIRE LOFT LADDERS, QUALITY YOU CAN TRUST!
These days most homeowners suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept – but where to store it all? That’s where Yorkshire Loft Ladders come in. The company, based locally, offers homeowners the opportunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50 sq ft of boarding and a light all fully fitted in less than a day from just £277 + VAT. But it’s not just the affordability of the package the company offers that makes Yorkshire Loft Ladders stand out as manager Mark Hodson explains:
‘Our watchwords are Quality, Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served tradesmen so our customers are assured of the best job. Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and Value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford.
36
Our business relies on referrals and we got a huge amount of our calls from people who have been referred to us by our existing customers - that simply wouldn’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles.
At the end of the day the old adage that happy customers lead to more happy customers is true and we work hard to make that happen for every installation we carry out!’ So, if you want to make use of your loft space, however big or small, call Mark on 0800 612 8359 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft!
