Whitby Advertiser February 2021 Issue

Page 1

Welcome to our February issue Stephen Ault EDITOR A most warm welcome to the February edition of the Whitby Advertiser. It’s a wet, miserable and cold morning as I write this, but the gentle sound of raindrops on the window pane is quite soothing. Lyrics of a song by O.B. McClinton come to mind … “she can take the morning rain falling on my window pane, and turn it to sunshine in my mind”. I hope that when you come to read this, the rain has indeed become sunshine and you enjoy what our handy magazine has to offer. It may be a more challenging start to the year than we had hoped for, but here at the Whitby Advertiser we have committed ourselves to keep publishing and delivering our magazine as usual to support our local economy with its many small businesses and tradesmen, who are in turn working hard to support our local community and keep us all going. The Whitby Advertiser gives the perfect opportunity for businesses to connect with both new and existing customers, with a potential audience of 24,000 readers not only here in Whitby but throughout the Esk Valley and as far as Skelton, Saltburn and Guisborough. Through our pages, businesses can say how they have changed to respond to the current situation, reassuring customers that they are safe and secure, as well as promoting new services such as online sales and apps, click-and-collect, takeaway services and home deliveries. The emphasis of our February issue is very much on encouraging readers to support local businesses, shops and tradesmen who are in turn investing in our local communities. For example, The Fisherman’s Wife, a seafood restaurant with a seafront location offering fabulous sea views, has invested in their building to create a new takeaway hatch with a dog friendly area on the Khyber Pass, as well a fabulous beach bar and grill called ‘The Fisherman’s Shack’ on the Battery Parade level which boasts outside seating – particularly handy for a day out on the beach! Check out their adverts, which include a mouth-watering ‘Buy One Get One Free’ offer for the Shack! You can also read about local optometrist John Prouse who has invested in lifesaving Optomap eye scan equipment at his Loftus and Skelton branches, equipment that you would normally only find in specialist eye hospitals and select opticians. You can get this scan for an amazing half price with the voucher on Loftus & Skelton Optical’s advert. If you would like to advertise in our March edition, please do get in touch as space is filling up fast. Simply give us a call or drop us an email. We can even design your advert for you at no extra cost. The Whitby Advertiser – bringing business to your door in 2021. Keep safe and well everyone. Stephen

FOLKLORE OF BRITISH INSECTS

ASTONISHING FACTS, MYTHS & LEGENDS OF THE CREEPY-CRAWLIES OF GREAT BRITAIN By Chris Firth, with illustrations by Rebecca Hobbs

Bed-bug – Cimicadae Some facts and folklore

returned with a red velvet sack that seemed to be squirming and shimmering and writhing all about. ‘Open this in the market square at mid-day on the next full moon and you’ll see a change in the lazy rascals!’ She said, laughing. He asked her what was in the sack, but she just tapped her nose. ‘I’ll be knowing, but you’ll soon see. Now give me my gold guinea and hop on your way.’ On the next full moon, at mid-day, at the cross in the market square, the Mayor opened the red velvet sack, as instructed. The townsfolk were milling about, having just crawled out of their beds and thinking that they might get a bit of shopping in before their afternoon snooze. From the sack there leapt, swarmed and scurried a river of tiny red bed-bugs with some black-flies and lice and other bitey-bedcreatures mixed in amongst them. Some hopped straight onto the clothing of the lazy townsfolk, others swarmed away into the cottages and farmsteads. Of course, these creatures, once at home in the beds and furnishings of the townsfolk, bit them and tickled them and harried them the whole nights through. Within a month the red-spotted folk were hopping out their beds at first light to be free of the biting. Soon the gardens were tended, the fields were mended, the shops were opened the town, became the busiest, most active town in Britain – not so much because the folk there like to work, but they are fussy about whom they share their beds with.

Also known as the True Bed-bug. Like fleas and lice, these little bloodsuckers have always aroused fear and loathing in people. Although they are not so widespread in Great Britain now, many parts of the world and Europe are still infested with them. Like vampires, the True Bed-bugs are nocturnal. They hide behind pictures, in cracks in the floorboards and, of course in beds. Beneath the sheets, under the pillows and inside teddy bears – that’s where you’ll find them! They feed on human blood but are equally happy to feed on pets and domestic animals. Their bite is quite painful although not always felt through the depths of sleep. It is usually in the morning after that the bites are noticed – painful, red, swollen spots at the bite-sites. Bed-bugs will continue to breed away in modern, warm centrally heated houses. If you want to get rid of them from a dwelling, you must open the Ants – formicidae windows, let in chilly air and keep the house at under 12 degrees centigrade for a couple of weeks. Eurmedusa, seduced by the god Zeus who appeared to her as an ant, bore him a son, who was Brrrr! But no more bugs or bites. named Aeacus. about the world of men and the ways and workings of the gods. And so at last, the islands of Britain were inhabited by humans, and for better or for worse, the descendants of Zeus, Eurmedusa and Aeacus still inhabit the islands of Great Britain to this very day. Some Ant Folklore Ants are symbolic of hard work, perseverance, diligence and community spirit. If you dream of black ants, good health and unexpected wealth are sure to follow. If you dream of red ants expect bad luck. Unless you dream of them leaving your house in a long stream bearing their Queen’s eggs – this is a good sign. ‘Don’t tread on an ant – it’s done nothing to you!’ – Adam Ant If you discover an ant nest in your home and do not want it there, simply ask them to leave. Ask them politely but firmly. Within two days they will have gone. Apparently, this is guaranteed.

Of Ants and Bulls Daedalus, father of Icarus, was given the task of threading a fine golden wire through a spiralling sea shell. If he failed in the task, the King of Minos, who suspected Daedalus of being a murderer, would have him and his son put to most gruesome deaths. Daedulus, being somewhat clever, found an ant and tied the golden thread around its tiny waist. He then put a blob of honey on the tip of the conical shell and placed the little ant inside. Attracted by the scent of the honey, the ant crawled and scrambled its way around the coils of the shell. Sure enough, it eventually popped out from the tip of the shell and began to feast on the honey. Daedalus picked it up and drew the thread through the shell, releasing the ant with its reward of honey as he did so. King Minos was baffled and astounded that Daedalus had been able to complete the task. He spared him and his son, and employed him to design and build a great labyrinth, in which he would imprison the half-bull, half-human monster – The Minotaur.

YORKSHIRE LOFT LADDERS, QUALITY YOU CAN TRUST!

These days most homeowners suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept – but where to store it all? That’s where Yorkshire Loft Ladders come in. The company, based locally, offers homeowners the opportunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50 sq ft of boarding and a light all fully fitted in less than a day from just £277 + VAT. But it’s not just the affordability of the package the company offers that makes Yorkshire Loft Ladders stand out as manager Mark Hodson explains:

‘Our watchwords are Quality, Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served tradesmen so our customers are assured of the best job. Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and Value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford.

Our business relies on referrals and we got a huge amount of our calls from people who have been referred to us by our existing customers - that simply wouldn’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles.

At the end of the day the old adage that happy customers lead to more happy customers is true and we work hard to make that happen for every installation we carry out!’

So, if you want to make use of your loft space, however big or small, call Mark on 0800 612 8359 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft!

The Fisherman’s Wife has opened downstairs something new for her husband. It’s a place by the beach where he can enjoy a drink with his mates after a long days fishing for his wife.

It’s something unique for Whitby. char and flame grilled lobster and local sea food, spatchcock chicken, prawn skewers, gourmet burgers, fish tacos and of course traditional fish and chips.
