Recently I was chatting to a friend about the challenges of everyday living, more specifically the chaos and uncertainty in the world today and how difficult life can be as a result. Anxiety, stress, even feelings of helplessness and despair. How can we improve our own health, happiness and wellbeing when there is so much going on in our lives, the lives of those around us, and indeed the world itself? Well, it turned out to be a long discussion as you can imagine, far too much for me to recount here.
This conversation came to mind today when I came across the phrase ‘Practice mindfulness for a healthier, happier you’ in a book. Practicing mindfulness is doing everything you can to be grateful for what you have in the moment – not letting ideas of the future or past experiences influence the reality of the present. An awareness of where we are and what we’re doing right now, and consciously shutting out all else. Stop. Listen to our body. Our breathing. Before we jump out of bed in the morning, before we rush into a task. Pause a while and breathe. Apparently, a year of practicing mindfulness can transform our lives... Getting more involved in the community can also transform our lives, and those of others too. I was in the Coliseum yesterday, and it was lovely to see so many people there giving freely of their time. Volunteers in the café, at the Dementia Forward social afternoons, over the road at the Network Shop selling donated household goods and furniture, at the Walled Garden just outside town. Volunteers everywhere but more needed. More volunteering opportunities can be found on pages 3739 of our magazine – at the library, the Foodbank, Caring Together and local charity shops to name a few. Can you give some of your time... and bring a smile to others?

THE FOOD OF LOVE... CHOOSING BETWEEN AN APHRODISIAC OR A MARS BAR!
The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, right? So I decided to cook up some culinary love magic for my boyfriend this Valentine’s day, but what to choose?
He loves Japanese food so I consulted my Japanese food-loving friend Yui. She informed me that in Japan the puffer fish is considered to be a great delicacy and an aphrodisiac, but the kicker is that it contains a poisonous gland so deadly it must be removed before eating! One mistake by the carefully trained chef and the food of love can become quite literally, a matter of life or death!
I thought a safer seafood option might be the oyster. A favourite with the Romans, some oysters are able to change sex repeatedly and so are said to give you the ability to experience the male and female sides of love. Yui cheerfully imparted the ‘fun fact’ that at least 12000
people a year in the UK develop food poisoning after consuming oysters, which kind of put me off a bit. What about asparagus? The high levels of vitamin E are supposed to increase blood and oxygen flow to the genitals. It’s also full of potassium — which is linked to sex hormone production, and as a bonus it even has a somewhat phallic shape. Asparagus and hollandaise sauce was a winner surely. Yui tilted her head to one side. “You do know that the asparagusic acid in asparagus breaks down into sulphur compounds, which make your urine smell revolting?’ Uh-oh, she was right.
In the end I settled on making chocolate mousse. Dark chocolate contains both a relaxing sedative that lowers inhibitions plus a stimulant to perk you up. My boyfriend is a chocoholic so I’m backing a winner and better still Yui didn’t point out any pitfalls!

SOON TO OPEN WHITBY CARE HOME WELCOMES MAYOR AT TOPPING OUT CEREMONY
A major milestone has been reached at The Mayfield Care Home, Whitby’s new luxury care home which will provide residential and dementia care and create 65 jobs locally.
The 66-bed home will be operated by Cromwell Care, a family-run business that is focused on providing the highest quality of hospitality and care for its residents.
The site’s construction team was joined by the Town Mayor of Whitby, Cllr Linda Wild, Scarborough Borough Council’s Councillor for Mayfield, Cllr John Nock, Cromwell Care’s CEO, Tobyn Dickinson, and The Mayfield Care Home’s General Manager, Adam Kane. The final roof tile was held by the team to mark this special occasion, as the build moves into its final phase.
The Mayor was given a tour of the stunning new facility which will include a state-of-the-art cinema, a luxurious hair and beauty salon, and a café which will serve complimentary drinks and homemade cakes and biscuits. The spacious bedrooms will each have their own full ensuite wetroom and all bedrooms on the ground floor will have access to The Mayfield Care Home’s wonderful garden. The suites will include a dining area and lounge, as well as a large ensuite wetroom.
The Mayfield Care Home’s design incorporates the latest innovations throughout to ensure its residents comfort and safety. The home’s solar panels, ground source heat pump and battery pack will generate nearly all its own energy requirement and make it almost completely carbon neutral.
Councillor Wild said, “As the Mayor of Whitby, the community is at the heart of everything I do, and The Mayfield Care Home will undoubtedly become a significant part our local community. It was an honour to visit the home and meet the team. We witnessed a hugely impressive building which will bring important jobs to Whitby, as well as much-needed accommodation for elderly people in Whitby and the surrounding area.
We are looking forward to working with them in the coming months and years. The Mayfield Care Home team is passionate about the meaning of quality of life and I could see that in the team’s experience and focus, and the design and layout of the building.”
Tobyn Dickinson said, “I’d like to thank The Mayor of Whitby and Councillor Nock for joining us for our Topping Out Ceremony – it was an absolute pleasure to welcome them and give them a tour of our home. The Mayfield Care Home is coming together well and I’m sure our future residents will love everything we have to offer. The home will become a key part of the local community. There is a significant shortage of care home beds in Whitby, and we look forward to helping improve this situation.”
The Mayfield Care Home is scheduled to open its doors to its first residents in March.
Adam Kane and his team will be hosting open days on the weekend of 25/26 March which will provide an opportunity for local people to explore the first-class facilities and learn more about The Mayfield Care Home’s top-quality offering. The open days will be from 11am to 3pm – there is no need to book, and guests will be given complimentary refreshments.
Visit www.themayfield.co.uk or call 01947 280 888 to register your interest in living at The Mayfield Care Home.

STILL OPPORTUNITIES TO GET VACCINATED AGAINST FLU IN NORTH YORKSHIRE
People across North Yorkshire and York are being encouraged to get their flu vaccination if they have not already.
There has been a significant increase in flu cases across our region over the last few months and this is likely to continue spread over the winter. Local hospitals are also seeing a high number of patients, of varying ages, being admitted with flu.
It comes as the latest data shows there were 5,500 patients in hospital with flu across the UK last week and more than 9,000 patients with COVID.
Eligible groups, such as the over 50s, pregnant women, health and social care workers and people with serious health conditions and their carers are being encouraged to take up the offer of a free NHS flu vaccine as soon as possible.
For many people, flu is a very unpleasant illness that can knock even the most healthy of us off our feet. For more vulnerable people, it can cause serious and life-threatening complications.
If you feel unwell with flu, it is advised you rest, keep warm, take ibuprofen or paracetamol if you are able to in order to lower your temperature and drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration. People are also being asked to keep indoor rooms well ventilated if possible, without making them too cold.
Sue Peckitt, Director of Nursing (North Yorkshire) for Humber and North Yorkshire Health and Care Partnership, said: “Flu isn’t just a bad cold, while most people get better on their own with rest, keeping warm and drinking plenty of fluids, they’re still likely to experience a few days of unpleasant symptoms such as a high temperature, head and body aches, difficulty sleeping and exhaustion.
“This is not something people would want to experience, especially over winter. GPs do not recommend antibiotics for flu because they will not relieve your symptoms or speed up your recovery.
“The best way to prevent against serious illness is to get vaccinated”
A pharmacist can give treatment advice and recommend flu remedies. Call a pharmacy or contact them online before going in person. You can get medicines delivered or ask someone to collect them for you.
To reduce the risk of spreading flu:
• Have the flu jab as soon as possible (available free to certain groups via the NHS and for anyone –for a small fee – at their local pharmacy)
• wash your hands often with warm water and soap
• cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze
• bin used tissues as quickly as possible
• try to stay at home and avoid contact with other people if you have a high temperature or you do not feel well enough to do your normal activities.
Flu vaccines are safe and effective. They’re offered every year on the NHS to help protect people at risk of flu and its complications. The vaccine is free for frontline NHS staff and care staff who are not offered it by their employer.
A free flu vaccine is given to adults who:
• are 50 and over (including those who will be 50 by 31 March 2023)
• have certain health conditions
• are pregnant
• are in long-stay residential care
• receive a carer’s allowance, or are the main carer for an older or disabled person who may be at risk if you get sick
• live with someone who is more likely to get a severe infection due to a weakened immune system, such as someone living with HIV, someone who has had a transplant, or is having certain treatments for cancer, lupus or rheumatoid arthritis
• Are a frontline health and social care worker and you cannot get a flu vaccine through your employer
You can have an NHS flu vaccine at:
• a pharmacy offering the service (if you’re aged 18 or over)
• some maternity services if you’re pregnant
• Sometimes, you may be offered a flu vaccine at a hospital appointment.
To book your free flu vaccine visit www.nhs.uk/ conditions/vaccinations/book-flu-vaccination/

North Yorkshire Moors Murders - an Anthology of True Crimes
by Jeannette Hensby
'North Yorkshire Moors Murders - an Anthology of True Crimes’ is a collection of fascinating true crimes by Jeannette Hensby, an author, researcher and true crime writer from Yorkshire.
With its quaint market towns, old fishing villages, rugged cliffs tumbling down to any beaches and hidden bays of the East coast, the stunning beauty of the North Yorkshire countryside and coast is hard to beat. Nowadays, many roads criss-cross the area, but in the 19th century, when the crimes in this collection are committed, life was very different with farms and villages being isolated and the beautiful wild moors were the perfect hiding place for those in mind.
The Girl of Ink and Stars
by Kiran Millwood Hargrave
Isabella Riosse (Isa) is a teen trapped on the island of Joya, a land full of myths; forbidden to travel further than the forest that flanks her village by the Governor, and all the while dreaming of the faraway lands her cartographer father once mapped.
When a string of unsettling events and the disappearance of her closest friend Lupa make it necessary to journey beyond the forest in search of answers, Isa joins a team of explorers on an adventure that will test her map-making skills and her courage. As she follows her map, her heart and an ancient myth, Isa discovers the true purpose of her quest: to save the island itself.
The stories are well written and interesting to read, and the author’s meticulous research is clear - a must read for those who enjoy true life murders. Jeannette Hensby is a passionate true crime writer, who enjoys researching true crime cases and writing books about them. Jeannette has always had a keen interest in psychology and people’s behaviour, with a particular interest in those that might have been involved in a miscarriage of justice. Jeannette has written a number of books since writing her first book ’The Rotherham Trunk Murder - Uncovering an 80-year old Miscarriage of Justice’ back in 2016. Further details of all Jeannette’s books can be found on her Facebook page or by visiting her website at jeannettehensby. co.uk
'North Yorkshire Moors Murders’ can be purchased from Amazon for just £5.99, where you can also download a Kindle version. All Jeannette’s books can be purchased from Amazon - you can also buy an omnibus edition containing all seven of Jeannette’s books to date in hardback, paperback or Kindle formats – great value for money!
The story is a fantasy set in a parallel magical world. The author draws on mythology and folklore and blends these with themes of friendship, adventure and courage. As a bonus the text is enhanced with beautiful illustrations and maps.
The Girl of Ink and Stars is officially a children’s novel but I suspect there are many adults who will also enjoy this richly drawn world and its characters.

YORKSHIRE LOFT LADDERS, QUALITY YOU CAN TRUST!
These days most homeowners suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept – but where to store it all? That’s where Yorkshire Loft Ladders come in.
The company, based locally, offers homeowners the opportunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50 sq ft of boarding and a light all fully fitted in less than a day from just £277 + VAT. But it’s not just the affordability of the package the company offers that makes Yorkshire Loft Ladders stand out as manager Mark Hodson explains:
‘Our watchwords are Quality, Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served tradesmen so our customers are assured of the best job. Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and Value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford.
Our business relies on referrals and we got a huge amount of our calls from people who have been referred to us by our existing customers - that simply wouldn’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles.
At the end of the day the old adage that happy customers lead to more happy customers is true and we work hard to make that happen for every installation we carry out!’
So, if you want to make use of your loft space, however big or small, call Mark on 0800 612 8359 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft!
