COMMUNITY NOTICE
WHITBY’S DEFIBRILLATOR NETWORK KEEPS ON EXPANDING Just over a year ago the death of a local man on his way to work in the harbour watch office triggered a series of events which resulted in highlighting the urgent need for public access AED’s in Whitby. The initial plan was to establish a network of ten defibrillators at strategic sites across the town. That target has now been well exceeded. The volunteer project has been running for 18 months and with the combined effort of the Whitby Defibrillator Project, The Whitby Lions Club, The Street Angels and most importantly the magnificent generosity of Whitby Town Council, Scarborough Borough Council, local businesses, groups and individuals in the Whitby area, over £45,000.00 has been raised. This has enabled the installation of some thirty defibrillator units in and around Whitby, with still more to come. They are supplied by Andrew Deptford (www.aadefib.com) and local electricians M.C. & LTC Electrical have done much of the installation work.
6
The WDP organise ‘Defibrillator Familiarisation’ sessions which are always well attended. To find out when and where the next ‘Defibrillator Familiarisation’ is being held, or if you or any group wish to host a ‘Familiarisation Session’, please contact the Whitby Defibrillator Group on 07786 811 199 or 01947 600297 or visit our Facebook page. The locations of the defibrillator units in their unmistakeable bright yellow boxes can be found on the map below. They can be used by anyone. Calling 999 will direct you to the box closest to you and give you the code to open it. Once attached to the person, the machine will decide whether to administer a lifesaving shock. The WDP continue to raise funds in order to service and maintain the network. Donations from organisations, small businesses and individuals are always welcome and can be made to Lion Bob Stevens, 15 Parsons Close, Whitby YO21 3LP or Chris Brunning at The Whitby Pet Shop in Station Square. All cheques payable to “Whitby Lions Club” endorsed on the back W.D.P. BACS payments can be made to Whitby Lions Club Sort Code: 40-46-24 Account No. 00532010 with the reference W.D.P. Collection boxes can also be found in local business premises. If you can offer a site for a W.D.P collection please email us at wdpwhitby@gmail.com. Please also get in touch if you wish to organise a fundraiser on our behalf.

THE FAIRIES AND MERMAIDS OF NORTH YORKSHIRE
PIE SIMON AND THE DANBY BEACON FAIRY SPOON This is another story which has uncanny resemblances to tales up and down the country and about the world – folklorists and story-tellers were never shy of pilfering from each other. The nearest geographical version is from just down the road in the Yorkshire Wolds, the famous tale of Willy Howe.
Visitors to Danby Beacon are astounded by the wonderful views. It’s said, that in the right light, you can see so far that you can glimpse right through into the other world. Of course at midnight, on a full moon, the view is somewhat different and little more mysterious, but still very beautiful. And it was this view that Pie Simon saw as he stumbled over the moors on his way home to Egton after a night of food and merry making in the taverns of Danby. It was a fair walk but Simon didn’t mind. He was a strong lad, and as his name suggests, was not averse to having a meal or two. As he was passing the fairy mounds he could hear music and chattering coming from within the nearest one. He knew he should have hurried on by and scarpered out of there, but still a little tipsy, he fancied a dance, and the fiddle playing seeping out into the night was irresistible.
The Danby version is said to have been found in the margins of the Domesday Book, so pre-dates the Willy Howe yarn by over 300 years. The ‘fairy spoon’ itself is said to be somewhere within the clutter of relics stored in the basements below Whitby Museum. Having never been catalogued properly, nobody at the museum seems to know exactly where it is, but the trustees have said that they will put it on display next to The Hand of Glory as soon as it turns up. The dish and the spoon in the tale inspired the famous nursery rhyme: ‘Hey diddle diddle, the cat and fiddle...’ Dish, back then Simon walked round the mound nine times antias now, meant an ‘attractive person’. clockwise and sure enough on the ninth time he So, the tale. There is an ancient signal beacon on came upon a little door with carved stone pillars the moors at Danby, and those who have ever and an ornate lintel. He was a bit afraid but curiosity visited it will know that there are fairy mounds and the music got the better of him. He tucked right next to it, and scattered over the moors all himself down as small he could go and popped in about there. Of course really these are the burial through the door. mounds of ancient chiefs and queens, but who’s to say that these legendary folk were not of ‘the Fay’. If, historically speaking, you delve a little further north at Street House Farm, near Easington, you’ll find genuine archaeological accounts regarding the discovery of an ancient fairy palace that was said to have become connected to the Abbey of Hild at Whitby. And if you think your leg is being tugged here, research it for yourself on your own ‘magic box’. A rare ‘bed burial’ of a tiny princess was excavated there by Steve Sherlock, along with a mysterious cemetery of tiny graves. The beautiful gold and garnet amulet of the buried princess can be viewed now, today, in Kirkleatham museum at Redcar. Interestingly enough, both the mound that marks the top of the Street House site and Whitby Abbey can be seen from Danby Beacon. 48
Inside the mound it was all brightness and revelry. Pretty little people in green and red clothing were feasting and drinking at tables piled high with food, while others danced on the stone floor to a band of wild eyed musicians. ‘Welcome,’ said a little pointy-eared doorman, bowing and leading Simon into the party. He was led to a table where he was presented with a goblet of wine and a bowl of delicious looking soup. ‘Eat, sup and be merry,’ said the jolly little fellow. Pie Simon had heard something of fairy lore, as you do in those parts. He remembered the tales where people who drink or eat of fairy fare end up spending hundreds of years under the hill when they think but a blink of the eye has passed by in the
real world. So he smiled and accepted the food and drink, but he didn’t touch a morsel or drop of it. In the broth bowl was a lovely spoon, made of shining silver and all encrusted with garnets, emeralds and tiny blue sapphires. Simon knew that he had gone beyond a step that a human should go and if he wasn’t careful he wouldn’t get out of the party for quite a while. Like lads do, he hit the dance floor. After several dances with a very pretty little fairy, all tumbling blonde hair and sparkling blue eyes, he said he had to rest a moment. She laughed and said, ‘Well, you dance very well, and are quite a dish for a human. Don’t ever forget me, Pie Simon!’ She stood on her tip toes and gave him a kiss on the lips then leapt back into the dance. Simon found his way back to his table near the door. He plucked the spoon out of the soup, licked it clean, then slyly pocketed it, for he’d taken quite a shine to the thing. With a cheery wave to the party and his dancing fairy he ducked back out through the door and bolted it down the hill. As the sun cracked open the morning, Pie Simon arrived home in Egton. He was somewhat bedraggled and was blabbering away, like some men tend to do after a good night out, but he was safe and was put to bed with his boots on. When he’d had a little sleep and returned to his senses Simon groggily recalled the night of partying with the fairies and felt a twinge in his heart for his beautiful little dancing partner. His head was all fuzzy and clouded though, and it was as if half of him was still back in the party under the hill. It all seemed like a mad dream and already so long ago. Then he remembered – the spoon! After a quick search he found it in his jacket pocket. It was such a beautiful, bright and shiny thing and he felt a pang of guilt for stealing it. But hadn’t he licked it though!? Hadn’t he tasted just a flicker of the fairy food? And was that now why he couldn’t think straight, nor get the lovely face of the fairy lady out of his mind or the feel of her one kiss from his lips?
Pie Simons’ pint sized sweetheart It’s said that Simon kept the fairy spoon in his pocket to the end of his days. He made sure that whenever he went to Danby or over the moors he never went near the beacon or past any fairy mounds. He spent a lot of time looking at the spoon though, turning it over and over, doing that visual trickery thing where you make your face big and swollen or tiny and pinched, depending which side round the bowl is gazed upon. And as the years passed he started talking into it, smiling at the silly reflections it made of him, chatting on as though talking to a lover inside the spoon, even pecking kisses on the back of the bowl. Eventually, he became known as something of an idiot about the moors. Simple Simon, they started calling him, and everybody knows about him from the rhyme, but that’s a different story to this one. We’ll leave him be here as Pie Simon, gazing and giggling and chatting away into his beautiful fairy spoon, forever yearning for his dancing partner. Chris Firth © 2020 49

The company, based locally, offers homeowners the opportunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50 sq ft of boarding and a light all fully fitted in less than a day from just £277 + VAT. ‘Our watchwords are Quality, Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served tradesmen so our customers are assured of the best job. Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and Value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford.
Our business relies on referrals and we got a huge amount of our calls from people who have been referred to us by our existing customers - that simply wouldn’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles.

ADVICE ON WHETHER YOU SHOULD NEUTER YOUR PET
MONTHLY VETERINARY ADVICE
Brogan Proud RVN of BECK VETS
Firstly, what is neutering?
Our general guidelines are:
Depending on the sex of your pet they will either need castrating or spaying, males have both testicles removed and females have their womb removed. The operation is carried out by your vet under general anaesthetic and you will have your pet back the same evening.
Male small breed dog – from 6 months old
With all surgical procedures there are risks which have to be taken into consideration when you decide to go ahead. The vet will be able to talk you through any worries you have when they admit your pet on the morning of the procedure.
Female large breed – 3 months after her first season has finished
Why should I get my pet neutered?
Male large breed male dog – once skeletal maturity is reached around 12-14 months Female small breed dog – 5-6 months old – before first season
Female cat – from 5 months old and over 2kgs in weight Male cat - from 4 months old
There are many health benefits to neutering, Please remember every animal is different and your vet must be happy to go ahead with the procedure including: on the day of surgery. • Reduced risk of mammary tumours (breast cancer) • Prevention of pyometras – this is a life-threatening infection of the womb. • Prevention of testicular cancer • A male dog that is considered cryptorchid (one or both testicles are undescended) must be neutered as the risk of the testicles becoming cancerous is so high. • Reduced risk of prostate cancer • Reduced risk of roaming to find a mate – less risk of being lost/stolen or having an accident • Prevents unwanted litters – rescue centres are full of unwanted kittens or puppies. The price of breeding responsibly is rarely lucrative after feeding, vaccines, worming, microchips and check up have been paid for. • Prevents complications in birth – the cost of an emergency c-section far out weighs that of a neutering procedure and puts your pet in a lifethreatening situation. When should I get my pet neutered? Always discuss with your veterinary surgeon about when the best time for your pet to be neutered is. There can be other factors apart from age and weight that determine when the vet would want to neuter your pet. 90
