Hello everyone! The calendar is about to flip over to 2022 as I write this so as well as my usual warm welcome to this new edition of the Whitby Advertiser, I must wish you all a Happy New Year! I hope you will find our magazine both enjoyable and informative whether you are a regular reader, or a visitor or holidaymaker here in the town for the holiday season. As we welcome in the New Year and take down the Christmas tree and all those decorations and lights, carefully storing them away for next year, our thoughts will inevitably drift back to 2021. The beginning of a new year is indeed a time to look back and reflect on the past year as well as celebrate the year which is to come. Through reflection, you know what you did well and can celebrate those achievements both large and small, along with the positive differences you made in not only your life but the lives of others. Reflection allows you to learn from the things that didn’t go quite so well and identify the areas you can improve upon, and so plan, re-organise and re-evaluate goals for this new year of your life. I already have a few things in mind - what about you? Let’s make 2022 a more successful year with greater achievements, but always remembering that we live life not only for ourselves but for others, eh? 2021 was another year which saw more challenges both for our communities and businesses brought about by the ongoing global pandemic. There have been positives that have brightened up the year though, such as the kind words, support, patience and compassion of many in our communities reaching out to those in need. In this edition, you will find an article about the excellent work of the Whitby Community Fridge initiative which is well supported by the Co-op and several local businesses. There is also an encouraging piece about a small independent bookshop that opened during the pandemic and is doing well, notching up some great achievements. As we look forward to 2022, our hope is for a great year for Whitby and surrounding communities where many heroes and hard-working businesses going that extra mile can be found, giving much-needed support and encouragement to us all. As I often say, local businesses and tradesmen are so important to a town – they create jobs, keep money ‘close to home’ and support neighbourhoods & communities. It may be tempting to buy online or look for tradesmen out-of-town to save money, but please do consider investing in your local community for these reasons! Here at the Whitby Advertiser our focus will remain on supporting local businesses in 2022 and we will continue to be at the forefront when it comes to local advertising, bringing increased business to your door.

The company, based locally, offers homeowners the opportunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50 sq ft of boarding and a light all fully fitted in less than a day from just £277 + VAT. But it’s not just the affordability of the package the company offers that makes Yorkshire Loft Ladders stand out as manager Mark Hodson explains: ‘Our watchwords are Quality, Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served tradesmen so our customers are assured of the best job. Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and Value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford.
These days most homeowners suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept – but where to store it all? That’s where Yorkshire Loft Ladders come in.
So, if you want to make use of your loft space, however big or small, call Mark on 0800 612 8359 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft!
Our business relies on referrals and we got a huge amount of our calls from people who have been referred to us by our existing customers - that simply wouldn’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles. At the end of the day the old adage that happy customers lead to more happy customers is true and we work hard to make that happen for every installation we carry out!’

• The best place to start is to write down a feeding log for your pet, be honest and include any chew sticks or scraps you give them.
• No human food or scraps from the table – as cute as those puppy dog eyes are you’re not doing your pet any favours by overindulging them.
• As with all weight control, regular exercise is important, an increase in activity must be done gradually and every animal’s abilities are different. Exercise doesn’t have to just be long walks and lots of running, encouraging playing and games is a great way for your pet to lose weight and have lots of stimulation. All of our pets are different so it is recommended you seek professional advice before starting any diet with your pet. It’s that time of year again where we all make our New Years resolutions! Every year the majority of us vow to get fit and lose some weight, now is a good time to look at your pet’s weight too. Our pets are suffering from an obesity epidemic. The latest studies show that at least a third of dogs and a quarter of cats are clinically overweight. Obesity is one of the most common medical diseases seen by vets. As with humans, obesity in our pets can cause serious health problems such as:
• Check the manufacturers recommendations for the food you’re feeding (remember to feed for the weight they should be rather than the weight they are).
• Diabetes • Heart disease
