The calendar has flipped over from 2019 to 2020 and I wish you a most warm welcome to our January edition of the Whitby Advertiser. I hope you will find the following pages both enjoyable and informative whether you are a regular reader, or a visitor or holidaymaker here in the town for the holiday season. Yes, it’s time to welcome in the New Year and then get around to taking those Christmas decorations down and carefully storing them away for another year. Did you all have a good Christmas with lots of fun, happiness and merriment? Looking back over 2019, it has been another successful year for our magazine; increasing our print run to 24,000 copies and extending our door-to-door distribution into the residential areas of Guisborough. We have also seen many new advertisers promoting their businesses with us for the first time and experiencing great results. A special thank you to each and every one of our valued advertisers, readers, business contacts, back-office and delivery team members for making it another successful year for the Whitby Advertiser and indeed the success that we are today – the number one choice for advertising in Whitby and the surrounding area.

What are they? Chilblains (also called pernio) are small itchy, red (purple sometimes) swellings on the skin, which if not addressed become very painful and can sometimes ulcerate, exposing the foot to the risk of infection. What causes them? Chilblains develop when the body is exposed to colder conditions, which the tiny blood vessels under the skin in the peripheral areas constrict and shut the blood flow to these areas. Upon returning to a warmer environment there is a delay in the vessels opening, causing chilblains. Who gets them? Chilblains mainly affect young adults working outdoors with inadequate clothing, the elderly whose circulation is less efficient than it used to be, people who are anaemic and some medications can also cause them as a side effect. ow do now have them? The areas of the skin affected can feel like they are burning and or itching, which can intensify upon entering a warm room. There may be some swelling or redness (see photographs to the right) and in some cases the skin breaks and ulcers may be present. ow are they treated? The best form of treatment is to prevent them in the first place, keeping the whole of the body warm not just the extremities. Wear layers rather than one thick layer of clothes and use natural fibres like silk. If the chilblains are not broken then they will benefit from some creams and lotions. If they are ulcerated they will need immediate attention from a GP or a Podiatrist. YOU’RE NEVER TOO OLD TO START A NEW CAREER!
Artesian Acting Academy came about after Alan was filming one of his agency actors showreels. Rebekah Joy Agnew, a very successful local Whitby actor was filming in Leeds and, along with her co-star Charles Humphrys, was being coached by Alan on set. It was pointed out by both actors that despite having had many acting lessons in the past, they were so impressed with the help and advice given in such an honest and inspirational way. The idea for the agency was born, and soon came to fruition. It is often stipulated by agencies that actors must continue to take lessons no matter how long they have been in the industry. The aim of the Academy is to provide both seasoned professionals and newcomers to the industry a no-nonsense, honest yet fun series of sessions designed at making both young and older actors better at their craft. Confidence, skills and expectations will all be addressed in this comprehensive course starting in January 2020 at the Green Lane Centre in Whitby.
Alan came into acting later on in life after a successful military and business career. He is the proud winner of many awards, the first being a Gold Remi for Best Actor for his portrayal of Al Thorpe in the film ‘Lad: A Yorkshire Story’. A true story of life in the Yorkshire Dales. THE FAIRIES AND MER-FOLK OF NORTH YORKSHIRE
THE STORY OF THE WHITBY HOBYAHS AND THEIR APPETITE FOR HUMAN FLESH! There is a yarn, The Hobyahs, long ago collected by the very wonderful Joseph Jacobs, that is said to have come from Australia or Canada or somewhere far away, but which in fact has its origins in Whitby and was taken about the globe by travellers and migrants from those parts back in the olden days.
would taste good salted or not, so the Hobbsie skipped back up to the cavern and told the others what he had spied. They decided they’d go snatch the girl that very night and bring her back to the cavern. They would feed her on cream and butter and biscuits to fatten her up and then make a meal of her on the next full moon.
Like story collectors do, Jacobs took some liberties with the original tale, playing around with the names and the rhymes and the setting and such like. Here is a more traditional version of the tale, though very much the same in structure and resolution, and it’s nice to see the story restored to its place of origin. This version, rescued from a disintegrating manuscript in the basement archives of Whitby Museum, has the original rhyme and the cast of characters strimmed down from three to two, for there was no place or need for the foolish old woman in this original version.
The old man’s little dog was called Turpie and he was as faithful and loyal as little dogs come.
Once there was an old man and a little girl and a small dog who lived in a white house up by a church on the top of a hill in Whitby. The old man was the girl’s grandfather. Her grandmother had died – although some said she had been spirited away by the East Side Hobbsies a few years before, and nobody was really sure what had become of her mother and father. Up beyond the church, just outside the holy ground, there was said to be a cave which led down into a cavern where a gaggle of Hobbsies dwelt – little, fierce, furry creatures with sharp teeth and bright blue eyes and gifted with the magic and mischief of fairies. At certain times of year they were said to like to snack of the flesh of humans, and nothing they liked better than the soft raw flesh of human children. One evening out doing mischief – breaking things and knocking things over and the like – one of the Hobbsies spotted the little girl playing on the hill outside the white house with her little dog. ‘Yum,’ growled the Hobbsie, licking his lips and churning his jaw, for it was that time of the year and moon when the Hobbsies best liked human flesh. The girl was pretty and plump and her flesh 42
That very night the Hobbsies came over the brow of the hill making a terrible racket with their laughing and chanting: ‘Hobbsies! Hobbsies! Hobbsies Ho! Tear down the little house, Yo Yo Yo! Eat up the old man – snip, snap, snack And carry off the little girl in our sack.’ But little Turpie barked so hard that the Hobbsies ran off and all the din woke the old man up. ‘Little dog Turpie barks so loud that I can’t sleep nor slumber, and if I live until morning I will cut off the dog’s tail. And in the morning, grumpy and grouchy with his lack of sleep, the old man did cut off little Turpie’s tail. The next night the Hobbsies came again, chanting and laughing as before: ‘Hobbsies! Hobbsies! Hobbsies Ho! Tear down the little house, Yo Yo Yo! Eat up the old man – snip, snap, snack And carry off the little girl in our sack.’ But little Turpie barked so loud and fiercely that the Hobbsies ran off again. The old man woke up with all the din and said, ‘ Little dog Turpie barks so loud that I can’t sleep nor slumber, and if I live until morning I will cut off one of his legs.’ And in the morning, grumpy and grouchy with his lack of sleep, the old man did cut off one of little Turpie’s legs. And this grim scenario was repeated the next three nights until poor old Turpie had no legs left at all. He could not run after the Hobbsies but he could still bark for all he was worth and that’s exactly what he did when the Hobbies
returned the next evening. Of course the barking woke the old man up again. ‘Little dog Turpie barks so loud that I can’t sleep nor slumber, and if I live until morning I will cut off the dog’s head. And in the morning, grumpy and grouchy with his lack of sleep, the old man did cut off little Turpie’s head, and was the end of little faithful Turpie, make no mistake about that. The next night the Hobbsies came again, chanting and laughing as before: ‘Hobbsies! Hobbsies! Hobbsies Ho! Tear down the little house, Yo Yo Yo! Eat up the old man – snip, snap, snack And carry off the little girl in our sack.’ This time there was no barking and when the Hobbsies found that little dog Turpie’s head was cut off they tore down the little white house, ate up the old man and carried off the little girl in their sack. Obesity is one of the most common medical diseases seen by vets.
