Whitby Advertiser January 2021 Issue

Page 1

Welcome to our January issue Stephen Ault EDITOR Hello everyone - Happy New Year! I write this at the end of a year that none of us could have imagined, one like no other where events have certainly changed the way we live our lives. Now, as the calendar flips over into 2021, our hope is for a much better year, where life will regain some semblance of normality once again, maybe not the old stressful manic life, but one of greater happiness, new and exciting opportunities and above all security and peace of mind. The beginning of a new year is traditionally a time to look back and reflect on what has been, as well as looking to the future and what is to come. I know many of us would simply like to forget 2020 than remember it, but there have been positives that have brightened up the year, such as the kind words, support and patience of many in our communities to those in need of help. Extra love, compassion, empathy and strengthened friendships have developed as a consequence of the events of the past year – hopefully these will not dwindle as lives begin to return to ‘normal’. Remember too how the folk of Whitby pulled together magnificently in 2020, a community of many heroes, and hard-working businesses giving much-needed support and encouragement. A community to be proud of and thankful for. As we look forward to 2021, our hope is for a great year for Whitby, and for a good recovery from the events of 2020. Local businesses and tradesmen are so important to a town – they create jobs, keep money ‘close to home’ and support neighbourhoods & communities. It may be tempting to buy online or look for tradesmen out-of-town to save money, but please do consider investing in your local community for these reasons! Here at the Whitby Advertiser our focus will remain on supporting local businesses in 2021. We will continue to be at the forefront when it comes to local advertising, helping bring increased business to your door Over this past year of uncertainty, we have seen a rapid speed of change in the local business community. Ways of doing business have been challenged and changed, and investments made in time, effort and money to adapt and respond to the current situation, offering click-and-collect, takeaway services and home deliveries as well as changes made to both procedures and premises to keep everything safe and secure whilst giving a more convenient and personalised service. Okay, the printing presses are ready to roll so I better end my scribblings here, but not before saying a huge thank you to each and every one of our valued advertisers, readers, business contacts, back-office and delivery teams for your great support this year – we couldn’t do what we do without you all! Keep safe and well everyone. Stephen

COMMUNITY INTEREST

SHOP LOCAL THIS NEW YEAR... HERE ARE A FEW REASONS WHY! The phrase ‘shop local’ is fast becoming something heard quite often. But are we all aware of the real benefits of shopping locally? It really is much more than just a phrase. So before we all head off to spend our leftover Christmas money at out-of-town shopping centres or online webshops here are a few reasons that might just change your mind... Receive a friendly personalised service - A local shop owner will make a special effort to ensure his customers are happy. They know they are likely to see you again so it’s in their interests to give you a fantastic experience. It’s a win-win situation because happy customers mean repeat customers and word spreads throughout the community! The more you think about it, the more places will spring to mind of where you can support your local economy and use the services of local businesses - picture framers, small bars and restaurants, haberdashery shops, gift shops, the list is endless! How can you help? - Ask local shop owners about gift cards or vouchers, an ideal way to not just buy someone a gift but it will also give the person the experience of trying the shop themselves and the chance for further feedback to spread. If you are a shop owner reading this, why not think about creating vouchers - hire a local graphic designer to create you some eye-catching vouchers and use a local printer to get them printed!

Unique gifts and products - If you shop online or at a town centre or a shopping centre you are faced with numerous shops that are national chains, although at times this is good as you will shop on the reputation of the chain. If you are looking for something special and unique the answer is to try somewhere local and independent. A local craft or arts shop is a fantastic place to shop and buy something totally unique that can’t be found anywhere else. 12

Get into social media - This is a great way to spread the word about your favourite local shop, sites such as Facebook give you the opportunity to give the business a virtual ‘like’ and share their details with friends, family and colleagues. You can also leave reviews about the great service you have received or why you enjoyed shopping with them and maybe even recommend your favourite product from their establishment. The great thing about shopping locally is the money you spend stays within your town and the local community which in turn improves its future - everyone’s a winner!

THE FAIRIES AND MERFOLK OF NORTH YORKSHIRE

THE FAIRY AND THE ANGEL From ‘The Fairies and Merfolk of North Yorkshire’ By Chris Firth 2020 – available now.

Once there was girl called Molly and it was nearly Christmas so she was very excited. She lived in a cottage at the top of a hill with her Mum and her Dad and their little dog, Turpie. Mum and Dad had bought a big Christmas tree. They had decorated it with stars and baubles and lights and tinsel. All they needed now was something to set on the top. Usually at Christmas the cottage was filled with aunts and uncles and cousins and Molly’s grandparents, but this year, sadly, things had to be different. For reasons that Molly did not quite understand none of her friends or relatives could visit - The Prime Minister, no less, had said so! So it would be just her, her parents, little Turpie and the wonderful tree.

go on the top of the tree. She set them both beneath the tree and decided that she would make her mind up in the morning and off she went to bed. In the middle of the night Molly woke up. She thought she could hear voices and there was light seeping through the crack beneath her bedroom door. Being a brave girl, she went out on the upstairs landing. Sure enough there were voices coming from down in the living room, and there was light flickering and flashing down there. She crept down the stairs. To her amazement, there was some kind of meeting going on. The Fairy and the Angel were standing in the middle of the floor before the tree, and all her dolls and bears were sitting in a circle, listening and paying attention.

Her grandparents sent their cards and presents though, and each of them sent a small box marked ‘It should be me,’ said the fairy. ‘I’m a tree spirit. I’m ‘URGENT! OPEN NOW!’ Molly was allowed to open the light that shines in all of Nature. I bring happiness and magic to children. I should go on top of the two boxes. In one there was beautiful the tree.’ beaming angel with curling hair and dazzling blue eyes. ‘For the top of the Some of the dolls and bears nodded tree,’ a note said. In the other box and murmured in agreement. there was a beautiful, shiny fairy ‘It should be me,’ said the Angel. with green skin, black hair and ‘I am the light of Heaven and dazzling brown eyes. ‘For the God has sent me to the Earth. top of the tree,’ a note said. They’re and murmured and both so pretty.’ seemed to be discussing ‘I don’t know,’ Mum said. the matter. ‘You decide. I’ve got to ‘I know,’ said Grumpy Bear, go out and do some panic Molly’s battered, oldest buying.’ and most favourite teddy. ‘Oh no,’ said Molly to her ‘Let her decide.’ He nodded Dad, ‘Which one do I choose. toward Molly who he had They’re both so beautiful!’ spotted sitting at the bottom of the stairs. ‘I don’t know,’ Dad said. ‘You decide. I’ve got to go and set the ‘Yes, come here, you decide,’ said attic up so that I can work remotely the Angel, who was in fact quite a from home.’ bossy thing.

Molly looked at the green fairy and the white ‘Yes, please come and choose,’ pleaded the Fairy, angel but she just couldn’t decide which one should whom Molly was taking quite a liking to. 24

‘If you choose me.’ said the Angel. ‘I’ll give you the reward of eternal peace and joy in Heaven.’ ‘Hhhm,’ said Molly. That sounded quite promising. ‘If you choose me,’ said the Fairy, ‘I’m afraid I can only offer you three wishes.’ She looked down sadly, realising that the Angel’s seemed the better offer. Now Molly, though young, was quite wise and was not one to be swayed by appearances. ‘I choose you,’ she said to the Fairy. The Fairy beamed and smiled. The Angel frowned. Some of the dolls and teddies chattered and clapped, others shaking their heads in disappointment. It was always the same with this sort of thing – the results were always so unpredictable. ‘But I’ll make my wishes now,’ said Molly. ‘Then perhaps you’ll see why.’ She breathed in, closed her eyes and stood on her tip toes. ‘First, I wish for eternal peace and joy in Heaven, if there is one. Secondly, I wish for every single person in the land to have as bright and happy and merry a Christmas as possible.’ All the toys and teddies chattered and clapped at this and even the Angel had a smile. ‘Thirdly,’ she said. ‘I wish for another Christmas tree identical to this one and right next to it.’ Upon her wish another tree appeared, identical to the first right down to the last star and bauble. On top of one tree Molly set the Angel and on the other she set the Fairy. Then she yawned, tidied up the toys and went back up to bed. The next morning her parents were most surprised to see two trees with little Turpie snug in his basket between them. Molly, of course, was delighted that it had not all just been a dream. The white Angel and the green Fairy looked splendid, both smiling away from the tops of their trees. In fact they went on to become great friends. And although it wasn’t the greatest Christmas ever without all her family there, Molly enjoyed every minute of it. She wished and she hoped and she prayed that everybody else would be enjoying theirs just as much as she was. 25

YORKSHIRE LOFT LADDERS, QUALITY YOU CAN TRUST!

These days most homeowners suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept – but where to store it all? That’s where Yorkshire Loft Ladders come in. The company, based locally, offers homeowners the opportunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50 sq ft of boarding and a light all fully fitted in less than a day from just £277 + VAT. But it’s not just the affordability of the package the company offers that makes Yorkshire Loft Ladders stand out as manager Mark Hodson explains:

‘Our watchwords are Quality, Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served tradesmen so our customers are assured of the best job. Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and Value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford.

Our business relies on referrals and we got a huge amount of our calls from people who have been referred to us by our existing customers - that simply wouldn’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles.

At the end of the day the old adage that happy customers lead to more happy customers is true and we work hard to make that happen for every installation we carry out!’ So, if you want to make use of your loft space, however big or small, call Mark on 0800 612 8359 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft!
