Welcome to our July issue Stephen Ault EDITOR It is a lovely summer’s day, the sun is shining and there is barely a cloud in the sky as I sit at my desk and write this introduction to our July issue. Yes, the weather is truly glorious so what will it be - destination beach, beer garden, or perhaps stay at home and simply enjoy the tranquility of your own garden? Ice cream, a cold beer, glass of wine, barbecue… oh ‘eck, I’m getting distracted now so I’d better get a move on and write this, then I can get out and enjoy that sunshine! Well, without any further ado, I wish you a warm welcome to your trusted Whitby Advertiser, the number one choice for local advertising in Whitby and the surrounding area, where you can always find adverts from businesses both old and new. Feeling bored, can’t sit still, want to try something different? A quick flick through the following pages brings up many ideas - paint your own pottery, book surf lessons, join the local golf club, book a sea trip, go sea fishing, or learn to play a stringed instrument - including a ukulele! Also, why not grab a pen and have a go at our ever-popular prize crossword, sponsored once again by the splendid Chris Blenkey and his lovely, hard-working team at the Whitby Co-op! Well, I ventured into town earlier today and it was heaving. Without a doubt, British seaside resorts are going to be very popular this summer even with the famously unpredictable British weather, as international travel and the sunnier climes abroad continue to remain off the cards for many. So when it comes to travel, escape and disconnect for a few days, a week or more, many Brits will head straight for the coast or countryside, and Whitby will be the first choice of many, with visitors eager to enjoy all that this wonderful town has to offer. Whitby and the beautiful North Yorkshire coast and villages are certainly the perfect destination for not just a relaxing holiday, but for somewhere where there is so much to see and do, explore and discover! As I have said before, it’s little wonder that visitors come back time and time again to our lovely part of the world - the true jewel of the Yorkshire coast! The Whitby Advertiser gives the perfect opportunity for businesses to connect with both new and existing customers, reaching a potential audience of 24,000 readers both here in Whitby and the surrounding area. it’s the ideal way for businesses to tell customers that they are open for business once again, reassure them that they are safe and secure, and promote new services such as online sales and apps, click-and-collect, takeaway services, and home deliveries. If you would like to advertise in our August or September editions, please do get in touch as space is filling up fast. Just call or drop us an email, and we’ll do the rest, including designing your advert at no extra cost! The Whitby Advertiser – bringing business to your door in 2021. Why advertise elsewhere! Enjoy July - keep safe and well!

ARE YOU OVER 50 & WEAR GLASSES? IF SO I URGE YOU TO READ THIS... Since the national roll out of the COVID vaccinations I have seen an increase in the number of my patients coming back for their eye test. Many have been overdue since COVID first struck, well over a year ago. Your eyes are so delicate, so important and yet you are likely to take them for granted. I did! Just being overdue an eye test by 12 months can make a big difference to your eye health. A lot of things can happen inside your eyes with each passing year. If you are over 50, looking after your eyes becomes more important than ever as you are more at risk of eye problems. I am seeing an increase in the number of people who are unnecessarily suffering from eye conditions that can lead to blindness such as Glaucoma and retinal detachments, simply because they did not get their eyes tested in time. You may think your vision is good and you don’t need an eye test. But an eye test is more than a vision check. I do a very detailed health check on your eyes using the Optomap (I will explain more in a sec). You see, there are many eye diseases that don’t cause any symptoms, no pain and no vision problems. But they can be there lurking inside you eyes, and if left undetected can suddenly cause complete vision loss. That is why I have the “Optomap” ultrawide retinal scanner, at my Opticians. Not even James Cook Hospital has this machine. It can save your vision and even your life. Many Opticians offer retinal photography but this only sees around 45 degrees of your retina (the important part inside your eye). My Optomap sees 200 degrees, over 4X more!

20

What does this mean to you? Just the other day, my sister Victoria who is the Optician at the Skelton branch did an eye test for a man who booked just for a routine check. The Optomap spotted 3 holes (see picture) in his retina that would not have been seen with a standard eye test! He had emergency eye surgery which saved his vision. Another few days and he could have been blind. If you are over 60 the NHS only offer a basic eye test that does not include checks like this and you can only have a routine eye test once every 2 years but a lot can happen in 2 years. That’s why I offer the Eyeplan where you can get yearly (not 2 yearly!) eye tests with unlimited comprehensive eye exams, including Optomap scans, priority appointments and emergency appointments. For your complete peace of mind with the Optomap eye exam please see the next page As you saw with the picture of the 3 holes in the retina with the Optomap scan, this image saved a man’s vision. The Optomap has also spotted cancer in the eye that has saved not just someones’ vision but also their life. If you choose your Optician based on “buy one get one free” offers then stop reading this now. If you choose your Optician based on the amount of care and attention to your eye health and vision then read on. You only have one set of eyes to last your lifetime. That’s why I am offering the Optomap Eyeplan… With this you don’t need to wait 2 years for a routine eye test, you get direct access to an Optician whenever you need, you get a yearly enhanced eye exam, priority and emergency appointments and access to the Optomap technology that not even James Cook Hospital has! How much would you pay for this complete peace of mind eye care? My Eyeplan service starts from £7 per month, £1.62 per week, around the cost of a loaf of Warburtons! Until July 31st, use the voucher on the next page to get a £50 glasses voucher when you join the Optomap Eyeplan. If you would like more information on my Eyeplan, including a free copy of my book and report on 7 ways to look after your eyes, simply request this by calling my recorded message service 24/7 on 01287 646001. If you want to book for the Optomap eye test at my Loftus or Skelton branch call 01287 646000 today.

YORKSHIRE LOFT LADDERS, QUALITY YOU CAN TRUST!

These days most homeowners suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept – but where to store it all? That’s where Yorkshire Loft Ladders come in. The company, based locally, offers homeowners the opportunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50 sq ft of boarding and a light all fully fitted in less than a day from just £277 + VAT. But it’s not just the affordability of the package the company offers that makes Yorkshire Loft Ladders stand out as manager Mark Hodson explains:

‘Our watchwords are Quality, Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served tradesmen so our customers are assured of the best job. Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and Value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford.

Our business relies on referrals and we got a huge amount of our calls from people who have been referred to us by our existing customers - that simply wouldn’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles.

At the end of the day the old adage that happy customers lead to more happy customers is true and we work hard to make that happen for every installation we carry out!’ So, if you want to make use of your loft space, however big or small, call Mark on 0800 612 8359 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft!

A DAY IN THE LIFE AS A STUDENT VETERINARY NURSE

Recently, it was Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month, a yearly celebration in recognition of the skills and value registered veterinary nurses bring to animal health and welfare. Below I share with you a typical day in the life of a student veterinary nurse working in a practice. It’s worth mentioned that ’typical’ doesn’t really exist though! Each day in the veterinary practice throws up a number of unique cases and you’re always learning something new. I myself am undertaking a Level 3 Veterinary Nursing apprenticeship. This involves 2 days a week at college and the rest of the week is spent working in practice. A day at work could go something like this 8:30am – Arrive at work and tend to any inpatients which have stayed in overnight. This includes taking them out and administering any medications. We begin to set up for the day as well as help to admit patient’s who are coming in for surgeries. 9:00am – Morning consultations begin, nurses can assist vets in their appointments by, for example, holding patients or running blood or urine tests. During this time, we also prepare for the upcoming surgeries and procedures of the day. 11:00 – By 11am the day’s surgeries have begun. These can range from routine procedures such as neutering and dentals to lumpectomies or orthopaedic operations. A big part of nursing is the monitoring of anaesthesia during these procedures as well as the patient’s recovery afterwards. Any other procedures can also be carried out at this time such as X-rays, ultrasound scans or Laboratory diagnostics which nurses can play a big part in. 13:00 – Once all animals are comfortable and settled we are able to get some dinner. 14:00 – After a bit of time to relax and recharge it is back to work to clean up after a busy morning – a significant part of nursing is the cleaning! Afternoon consults have also begun so we are at hand if the vets need us. Later in the afternoon we discharge any patients who have undergone procedures. As students, we also try and find time to regularly log our practical skills. This is done by uploading evidence onto an online portfolio. We are assigned a clinical coach within practice who helps keep us on track and monitors our progress. It is often a challenge to juggle studying for exams, maintaining our portfolio and working in a busy vet practice, however, our role 62

Ella Smith Student Veterinary Nurse

of BECK VETS

at work offers us the best learning environment we could hope for. 18:30 – Practice closes for the day and the phones are switched over to emergencies only. The last bits of cleaning and sorting are to be done to be all ready for the next day. 19:00 – Home time! It is important to be aware of how much of a vital and versatile member of the veterinary team nurses are (even students!) and this month gives us a wonderful opportunity to celebrate it. Starting out in a busy practice is a daunting prospect for student nurses but definitely a rewarding one. It takes a lot of perseverance and support but over time we develop a wide collection of skills and are proud to care for the pets of our local area! For any help or advice with your pet please do not hesitate to give us a call on 01947 820333 and remember we are available 24/7 for any pet emergencies.
