Fish & Ships! No, this is no typo for as I write this, the town is about to celebrate its first ‘Fish & Ships’ Festival, a promotion of Whitby's seafood and fishing heritage! Whitby has it all, doesn’t it, and so much can be celebrated when it comes to its magnificent maritime culture, from the building of its boats to its multi awardwinning fish restaurants and fish & chip takeaways – yes, the expected spelling this time! Well, the calendar will soon flip over from May to June, and so you find me at my keyboard again welcoming you to this June issue of the Whitby Advertiser, the number one choice for advertising in Whitby and the surrounding district. We simply cannot be beaten when it comes to local advertising, and as always I hope that you will find the following pages both enjoyable and informative whether you are a regular reader or visitor to this splendid part of the Yorkshire coastline. May has been such a busy month for the town with bank holidays, events, festivals and fine settled weather bringing crowds of visitors to the town, enjoying all that Whitby has to offer – the pretty harbourside and quaint streets with gift shops galore, and a fantastic choice of fish and chip shops and restaurants and other eateries serving not only wonderfully fresh seafood and the classic fish and chips, but a wide variety of food dishes covering many tastes and budgets.

Deadline for advertisers: FRIDAY 14th JUNE

supermarket here in the centre of Whitby. Dennis has achieved so much in his time in Whitby, far too much to mention in these brief scribblings of mine. A couple of years after arriving, the supermarket was awarded 'Store of the Year', a great achievement that Dennis describes as ‘the proudest moment’ of his career and one which he will never forget. The store has achieved so much over the years, which Dennis modestly puts down to the great people working at the store. I personally am most grateful for Dennis’s support of the Whitby Advertiser over the years, in particular for placing a stand by the entrance so that visitors to the store can pick up a copy of our magazine. I, along with everyone at the Whitby Advertiser, wish Dennis a long, happy and fulfilled retirement, and we look forward to collaborating with the new store manager Chris Blenkey, wishing him and the store every success for the future.

If you are a business and would like to advertise in next month’s Whitby Advertiser, don’t delay – call us today. Remember, we are the number one choice for advertising in Whitby and the surrounding area, offering a friendly yet professional service from our offices in Green Lane where local staff can help you plan your advertising to bring new business to your door. working closely with the golf club on this new digital venture. We know that we have to keep evolving as a club if we want to progress, and we have to drive forward with new ideas and new initiatives to bring more people into this great sport. With what we Charlie and the Executive Committee are determined have planned over the coming months and years, I’m to build upon the solid foundations already in place. confident that we can make a difference to the club One of the club’s main objectives is to provide the and the local area, and see the game of golf thrive once again.” best golfing experience in the region. The club has renewed its sponsorship deal with SG Petch for 2019/20. They help fund clothing for the men’s, ladies and junior teams as well as supporting various activities throughout the year. SG Petch are determined to help make it a great 125th anniversary year for the club.

A new club website was launched only a few months ago which showcases what the club has to offer in all its visual glory. Combined with a focus on highly targeted digital market-ing to attract new members, new visitors and increase use of the club’s recently renovated function facilities.

The team behind the website are no strangers to golf themselves. Dale Smith, Ben Benoliel and James McCullagh are lifelong members of the club and formed the We Are MODEST digital marketing business in 2018 to help support local businesses. Having played competitive golf at international, county and club level - it’s fair to say that the team fully understand the golfing world, as well as the current state of the game within the region.

The clubs Executive Committee, responsible for overseeing the operations of the club, has also started to make changes and has a new focus on driving increased revenue lead by Treasurer John Dunn.

“We have a renewed focus and commitment to our members to ensure the club is and re-mains, financially viable - and the changes we have made early in 2019 will see that we do that over the coming years. We have improved our financial planning and forecasting and we have a real desire to increase the number of visiting golfers to our club. Having spent over half a million pounds on golf course improvements over the last five years we have a product to be proud of and we want more golfers to experience what we have to offer” - John Dunn, Treasurer. In its 125th Anniversary year the club has a lot planned - a Trick Shot Exhibition in June and a Hickory Shaft Golf Day in July to name but a few of the events that should be well worth a visit for any golfer. Head PGA Professional, Mike Howes is also excited about what the changes mean for his business.

Dale Smith, Founder and Director of We Are MODEST said: “We are both proud and hugely excited to be “We’ve seen big improvements in the facilities at our disposal over the last few years with the introduction of the driving range and practice area and our TrackMan performance analysis system - I’m delighted to see the club increase the utilisation of those facilities.

We now have membership packages to suit all levels of golfer, from juniors, to students, to those looking to play flexible golf whilst still being a member of another club. Brand new for 2019, we have also introduced our Corporate Golf Packages - a real positive for local busi-nesses that want to benefit from what golf can do for their business and building client relationships.

FINGERS CROSSED YOUR LETTING AGENT IS FULLY UP TO SPEED WITH THE LATEST LEGISLATIONS!

Article courtesy of Hendersons Estate Agents, Whitby

Don’t leave it to chance. We like to be prepared for changes, that’s why we implemented improvements in our business over nine months ago and put a strategy in place to make sure that all our lettings advisors had external training with some of the industry’s leading trainers prior to the changes in legislation. Hendersons are fully licenced by ARLA Propertymark, have a separate client account and have the mandatory client money protection. In fact, we took this cover out the day we opened in 2015, but it was only actually made mandatory on the 1st April 2019. We use industry approved software and specialist lettings consultants to make sure we are aware of every single change in legislation and last year this felt like a daily event. We are aware that some landlords don’t use an agent, but you could be at risk of huge fines, pleading you weren’t aware of the changes will not wash. We are keen to help landlords get their house in order (excuse the pun), therefore keep an eye out for our Landlord Legislation events which we will be running monthly and will help you keep ahead of any changes and how our letting experts can help you maximize your investment. Is your letting agent available 7 days a week? Our lettings experts will be on hand from 4pm to 5.30pm every last Tuesday of the month, with our next event being held on the 25th June. So let’s make it a date, we look forward to being able to assist you with your queries, worries and help take the stress out of this ever-evolving area of property investment. It’s not all doom and gloom, Hendersons have never been so busy and in fact, we have never agreed so many lets in such a short time. We have agreed over 50% of the new tenancies in YO21 & YO221 and we have let out over 280% more properties than our closest competitor1. All this is not by chance, it comes down to hard work from our lettings department, exceptional marketing campaigns and knowing our area inside out. 46

Has a 24/7 emergency contact number? ARLA Propertymark licensed office? Over 35 years of experience in the lettings industry? Exceptional marketing skills? SafeAgent Approved office? If your answer is no to any of these questions, it’s time you called the area’s leading letting agent. Call a member of the team on 01947 60 26 26 or pop in along to our next Lettings Expert Event. Based on information from Rightmove, Criteria used: YO21 & YO22, all property types, all price ranges and all agents (Dates 1/1/19 to 20/5/19) 1

YORKSHIRE LOFT LADDERS, QUALITY YOU CAN TRUST!

These days most homeowners suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept – but where to store it all? That’s where Yorkshire Loft Ladders come in. The company, based locally, offers homeowners the opportunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50 sq ft of boarding and a light all fully fitted in less than a day from just £277 + VAT. But it’s not just the affordability of the package the company offers that makes Yorkshire Loft Ladders stand out as manager Mark Hodson explains:

‘Our watchwords are Quality, Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served tradesmen so our customers are assured of the best job. Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and Value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford.

Our business relies on referrals and we got a huge amount of our calls from people who have been referred to us by our existing customers - that simply wouldn’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles.

At the end of the day the old adage that happy customers lead to more happy customers is true and we work hard to make that happen for every installation we carry out!’ So, if you want to make use of your loft space, however big or small, call Mark on 0800 612 8359 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft!
