It seems only like yesterday that we were preparing the February issue of the Whitby Advertiser and here we are going to press once again – this time with our March issue! A warm welcome as always to this this latest issue of our magazine which I hope you will enjoy, whether you are a local resident or business owner, or a visitor or holidaymaker to our wonderful town of Whitby and the amazing area that surrounds it. As I write this, the skies are overcast and rain is certainly on its way. The last few weeks have seen some atrocious weather – Storm Ciara followed quickly by Storm Dennis, and now many places throughout the country are suffering from terrible floods. Our thoughts go out to all those affected. Hopefully we will soon see the back of this unsettled weather and be able to welcome the arrival of spring with its brighter days and warmer weather. March is a busy month on the events calendar with St David’s Day on 1 March, St Patrick’s Day on 17 March, and finally Mother’s Day on 22 March. Don’t forget too that British Summer Time begins on Sunday 29 March.

HUNT OUT THOSE LESSER-KNOWN FACTS AND HIDDEN GEMS IN THE A-Z OF WHITBY!

‘A-Z of Whitby’ is the latest book about our lovely town to be published by Amberley Publishing’ and forms part of their popular A-Z series. The authors are Ian Thompson and Roger Frost who also authored a revealing book about Whitby called ‘Secret Whitby’ back in 2016. ‘A-Z of Whitby’ delves into the history of Whitby, revealing interesting and significant moments. It highlights well-known landmarks, famous residents and digs beneath the surface to uncover some of the lesser-known facts about Whitby and its hidden gems.

This beautiful book is crammed full of delightful photographs and will appeal to both residents of and visitors to Whitby, and anyone else with an interest in the town. It is priced at £14.99 and can be found on the shelves of many local bookshops and visitor centres in and around Whitby.

INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF THE NURSE AND MIDWIFE CAMPAIGN North Yorkshire Clinical Commissioning Groups support the ‘International Year of the Nurse and Midwife’ campaign NHS Hambleton Richmondshire and Whitby, NHS Harrogate and Rural District and NHS Scarborough and Ryedale Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) are backing a national initiative, hosted by NHS England and NHS Improvement, which aims to showcase and celebrate nursing and midwifery. The ‘International Year of the Nurse and Midwife’ will run throughout 2020 and is a chance to recognise the incredible work nurses and midwives do across health and social care. Throughout the year, the three North Yorkshire CCGs will be encouraging nurses and midwives across the county to share their stories highlighting how they have made a difference to people’s lives and celebrate their achievements. NORTH YORKSHIRE FAIRY TALES AND MERMAID TORIES

THE MERMAIDS WHO CURSED STAITHES... There are two ‘merfolk’ stories just up the coast from Whitby. The different ways in which the villagers of Staithes and Skinningrove treated their merfolk is always of interest and was perhaps of ‘moral’ value at the time when the yarns were woven and set down. In Staithes, following a storm, two mermaids were found struggling and exhausted just inside the harbour. The local folk, known then as ‘Steersars’, gathered about to haul them out. They were beautiful, dark skinned creatures, with shimmering ‘fish’ tails but quite naked from the waist up. They had long, golden hair which tumbled about their shoulders and covered their modesty when necessary. One had shining eyes of misty blue, the other eyes of shimmering green mist, opal eyes, that lured people in and many a Steersar lad had trouble breaking off from her bewitching gaze. The story goes that the mermaids were caught up in nets and hooked up in a kipper smoking shed so that people could come in and have a peer at them. They were treated harshly, some said more by the women than the men, which may have been out of jealousy, for Staithes lasses, in general, have never been renowned as ‘lookers’. Groups of people would crowd in and gawp at them as though they were exhibits in a freak show, the women scorning at them, the lads poking at them with sticks through the netting, jeering at their nakedness. The beautiful mermaids said very little and bore their indignities with grace. They were fed on waste fish bits and potato peelings, a far cry from the fresh oysters and grilled lobster they were used to back home beneath the waves. The locals grew bored with their exotic prisoners and after a few months the villagers were not quite sure what to do with them. Every few days or so the mermaids were allowed out of the shack to bathe in the shallow rock pools along the nearby beach, led there under the careful watch of a couple of local fishermen. How the lovely maidens managed to make a bolt for it back into the open ocean is not quite clear. One version says 42

that one of the kipper shed lads had fallen in love with the green eyed mermaid, and falling prey to her gentle whispering he deliberately let them slip back away into the harbour. Other versions say the Steersars had simply become careless and were having a pipe and beer at the harbour side tavern, where the locals would gather and gossip. Whatever, the two mermaids made it away out into the harbour and back into the open ocean. As the mermaids swam away the locals waved their fists and gnashed their remaining teeth. The blue eyed mermaid rose up on her beautiful tail above the waves and lay a curse upon the village. She sang out:

‘The sea shall force to Jackdaw’s Well And all you fools shall go to hell! The mermaids then disappeared beneath the waves, never to be seen or heard of again, much to the lifelong sadness of one kipper smoking youth. Jackdaw’s Well was a place quite far inland and the stubborn Steersars mocked at the curse. Sure enough though, a great storm came up and under black skies the ocean raged right up the river, washing away many cottages, smashing away the cliffs where the well bubbled so that the well was no more. Thus the lay of the mermaid’s curse had come about. The shape of Staithes was changed forever, and the Steersars have always been suspicious of strange looking foreigners ever since, although it’s reckoned they are much more welcoming to strangers and visitors these days. Steersars well remember that tumultuous night which saw the ruin of the bottom village. Whenever the wind is up and the breezes are blowing they pat on their stomachs and whisper ‘It’s the mermaid’s revenge!’ Most of the locals live on the top of the hill now, leaving the little cottages and narrow streets about the harbour to holiday makers, second home incomers and tourists. It’s said that on full moon nights the ghost of the kipper lad can be seen sitting out on the edge of the harbour, hunched over in his hooded coat, eyes peeled out to sea, yearning for one more glimpse of his mermaid’s mesmeric eyes.

WHAT TO DO WHEN SOMEONE DIES - LEGAL ADVICE Alison Jeffels answers your questions on dealing with an estate. Q: What should I do first? A: The hospital or GP will provide a medical certificate; once you have this certificate, you will need to register the person’s death at their local Registry Office, within five days of their passing. Once the death has been registered, the main priorities are to secure the person’s house and find out if they had a Will. It could contain instructions for their funeral and on who should look after children or pets. The funeral can now be arranged but take legal advice if there is no Will or you are not an appointed Executor as you may not be entitled to recover costs. Q: What if there is no Will or I am not a named Executor? A: Without a Will, the estate will be distributed according to ‘intestacy’ rules. Many modern family set ups are not recognised under the rules so even if the family are in agreement as to what they want to happen to the deceased person’s estate it is still worth taking legal advice to make sure those who should be provided for, are. The Executors named in a Will are legally responsible for informing certain institutions of the death so it is important to find out who the Executors are. Q: Who deals with Administration of the Estate? A: The Executors named in the Will are responsible for administering the estate but should seek legal help if they are unsure about their duties. If there is no Will, responsibility lies with an appointed Administrator. A solicitor can advise who this should be. ‘Administering the estate’ involves gathering details of the person’s debts, finances and other assets to ensure debts are paid and the remaining estate is distributed according to the Will or intestacy rules. Q: What is ‘Probate’? A: A Grant of Probate, also referred to as ‘Letters of Administration’ or ‘Grant of Representation’ is a legal document which gives Executors the power to deal with the assets of the estate. Whilst not necessary in all cases, until Probate is granted you cannot sell property and some assets may not be accessible to the Executors. All banks/building societies etc. have their own requirements and you will need to clarify this with each establishment. Executors can apply for a Grant of Probate but the process can be complex and time consuming so many seek legal advice.

We were proud to open the doors of our fresh modern salon to clients old and new in October and our first fives months have been a very busy. Following a full renovation program using local tradespeople and supported by a very generous grant from Redcar & Cleveland Council we were able to bring a disused building back into the high street of Loftus. Everyone has been commenting on how smart the property on Station Road, Loftus looks from the outside and the community have been extremely generous and shown great support to us. 2019 has been a year of huge change relocating my family and closing my successful South Yorkshire salon but it is lovely to have had the opportunity to return to my roots and for my family to have a better life here. Bones Of Loftus can cater for all breeds of dogs and even has a giant low level bath to accommodate elderly or our larger clients. We try to be as flexible as possible and offer late evening appointments and some weekends but obviously these are extremely popular so we advise to book ahead to avoid disappointment. We encourage clients to bring their dogs for grooming regularly and offer maintenance baths to our grooming clients at reduced rates from ÂŁ10 as we know how awesome it is to enjoy a freshly groomed dog in the house. We see lots of dogs for nail trims, pad clearance, teeth cleaning, eye area tidy ups itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not just full grooms we want to help you keep your dogs healthy so are happy to work with owners. A lot of owners want low maintenance and that is great, but I am also an experienced handstrip groomer and aswell enjoy doing nice fluffy scissor styles. They usually have to work out how to use the new toy or mat which helps them to engage their brain.

Let your dog sniff and guide you wherever they want to go (within reason!) you might only get to the end of your street or around the garden but letting your dog explore is great stimulation for them. 90
