Whitby Advertiser March 2021 Issue

Welcome to our March issue Stephen Ault EDITOR Doesn’t time fly? It seems only like yesterday that we were preparing the February issue of the Whitby Advertiser and here we are going to press once again – this time with our March issue! A warm welcome as always to this this latest issue of our magazine. As I sit here and write this short introduction, it's a wet, miserable and cold morning, but I hope that when you come to read this, the rain has indeed become sunshine and you enjoy what our handy magazine has to offer! The challenges of Covid-19 are still with us, but we are now seeing more and more positive news, particularly regarding the vaccine roll-out programme. This gives us hope that better times are not so far away, when we can all take advantage of the new opportunities that the ‘new normal’ is sure to bring. Here at the Whitby Advertiser, we have committed ourselves to keep publishing and delivering our magazine as usual as these challenging times continue, so as to support our local economy with its many small businesses and tradesmen, who are in turn working hard to support our local community and keep us all going. The Whitby Advertiser gives the perfect opportunity for businesses to connect with both new and existing customers, with a potential audience of 24,000 readers not only here in Whitby but throughout the Esk Valley and as far as Skelton, Saltburn and Guisborough too. Through our pages, businesses can say how they have changed to respond to the current situation, reassuring customers that they are safe and secure, as well as promoting new services available to customers such as online sales and apps, click-and-collect, takeaway services and home deliveries. The emphasis of our March issue is very much on encouraging readers to support local businesses, shops and tradesmen who are in turn investing in our local communities. For example, this month we welcome a new advert from the Camphill Village Trust featuring their shop at Botton village near Danby. As well as stocking a great selection of groceries and household supplies, dairy products, Botton Village produce such as fruit & veg, and a selection of lovely gifts, there is now a Post Office within the shop offering a wide range of postal services. Eye health is so important these days, and both eyesight and eye health should be checked regularly. Local independent optometrist John Prouse has invested in lifesaving Optomap eye scan equipment at his Loftus and Skelton branches. You can read more about Optomap in the following pages and also find an amazing half price voucher for the scan! If you would like to advertise in our April edition, please do get in touch soon as space is filling up fast. Simply give us a call or drop us an email. We can even design your advert for you at no extra cost. The Whitby Advertiser – bringing business to your door in 2021. Keep safe and well everyone. Stephen

IF YOU ARE OVER 40 YOU NEED TO READ THIS, IT COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE! Do you value your life? It’s a strange question but many of us take it for granted. I would like to tell you a short story. One day a local man from Liverton Mines woke up and decided he needed an eye test. That decision was one of the most important decisions of his life... His vision was fine but he hadn’t had an eye test for a few years. He had seen one of my adverts in the paper and rang to book an appointment. I put him on our Optomap scan and this showed what looked like a tumour inside his eye. He was referred to the hospital and the specialist confirmed it was cancer inside the eye. Thankfully it was seen in time and he got treatment which saved his life.

Optician John Prouse with the optomap scan

Opticians even though this was first invented in You may read about these stories and think they the 19th century! will never happen to you, but I have seen too many cases where things can just happen inside That is why I have invested in over £100,000 for the Optomap scanner to kit out both Loftus and the eye. Skelton Opticians with the latest life and sight The eyes are so important, they give you vision saving technology. but they are also the window to your general health. To make time because we are promoting this sight-saving sure you get a full health check inside your eyes, check, you won’t have to pay £60 for the scan!! one of the best eye scans you can get is called the Optomap. You may be thinking ‘Opto what’? But Iet me explain... The Optomap is a machine that literally scans your eyes for problems on your retina (the very back of your eyes). Most Opticians these days have a retinal camera but the problem with this is it can only see 15% of the retina!

The standard camera is better than nothing but it’s a bit like going to the dentist and the dentist only checking a few of your teeth. The Optomap scan see’s nearly 5 times more than the standard camera and over 28 times more than the traditional Opticians’ torch. The torch is still used in a lot of 10

I am offering the scan half price, so you can get it for just £30 and this will include a full private eye test. Or you can even get it FREE when you join the eye plan, our membership club which gives you glasses at greatly discounted prices and unlimted private eye health checks. Not even James Cook Hospital has this tsechnology but you now have access to it at Loftus and Skelton. So, if you have not had an eye test for a while, or if you have had once recently with us but did not get the new scan then call one of my friendly team now on 01287 644211 for Loftus and 01287 650655 at Skelton.

FOLKLORE OF BRITISH INSECTS

ASTONISHING FACTS, MYTHS & LEGENDS OF THE CREEPY-CRAWLIES OF GREAT BRITAIN By Chris Firth, with illustrations by Rebecca Hobbs

Spiders - Arachnida Some facts and folklore

A whole book could, should and will have been written about spiders. Technically speaking, arachnids are not insects, but they are quite creepy and crawly so will do for us here. What other tiny creature causes so much revulsion, dread, panic, or fear? And yet they are so tiny and beautiful. The next time you recoil or shriek or flee a room in panic at the sight of a spider remember this little trick to help you abate your dread or phobia. Take a normal or even large house spider. Set it down on the floor. Stand beside it. Imagine that you were the poor spider, and that some hideous incomprehensively vast and deadly creature was there beside you, towering into the sky. Now really, who should be afraid and recoiling in horror? Spider folklore exists in every country and culture throughout the world. They are a symbol of mischief, malice, connectivity, fear, revulsion, and all things toxic. On the positive side, they are equated with patience and persistence due to their skill of setting elaborate and beautiful webs and then waiting for their prey. Without spiders, your carpets, your bedding, your rugs, your baskets, your cushions and indeed your clothing would not exist – for of course, in most mythologies around the world, spiders are the source and inspiration of the craft of spinning weaving fabrics. Also, knot work and net making would not have existed without the inspiration of the spider’s craft. Not mention the World Wide Web! Various deities, usually female, are linked to the spider. In ancient Egypt, the goddess Neith was known as the spinner and weaver of destinies. The same goddess by different names is known as Ishtar in ancient Babylonia, Arachne in Greece, and Minerva in Rome. 30

The Story of Athena and Arachne – the first spider. Although not technically a tale from British folklore, having evolved in Turkey (Lydia) and then come to our shores through the Greeks then the Romans, this is a moral tale well worth sharing. Perhaps, having read this, you will feel sorry for the next spider that you chance upon. Arachne was a shepherd’s daughter who began weaving at an early age. Her father was a wool dyer and fabric expert and through working for him she became a great weaver. People came from far and wide to look upon the amazing fabrics that she wove. All the praise and admiration went to her head. Foolishly, she began to boast that her skill as a weaver was even greater than the goddess Athena’s. Athena, goddess of wisdom, handicraft and warfare, was always up for a contest. She took great offense at Arachne’s boasting and, after disguising herself as an old woman, she set up a contest between the two of. Presenting herself as an old lady, she approached the boasting girl and warned, ‘My girl, you mortals can never compare to any of the gods. Plead for forgiveness and Athena might spare your soul.’ Arachne considered her latest work, a beautiful, shimmering piece that seemed like sunlight and water. ‘Well, I only speak the truth,’ she said. ‘If Athena thinks otherwise then let her come down and challenge me.’ Athena removed her disguise and appeared in her bright glory, clad in a white gown that sparkled like star light. Arachne was surprised, but not frightened. She set herself at her loom and the goddess set to at hers. The two began weaving straight away. Athena’s weaving represented four separate contests between mortals and the gods in which the gods punished mortals for setting themselves as equals of the gods. Arachne’s weaving depicted ways that the gods, particularly Zeus, had misled and abused mortals, tricking and seducing many mortal women. When Athena saw that Arachne had not only insulted the gods but done so with a work far more beautiful than her own, she was enraged. She destroyed Arachne’s tapestry and her loom, struck her about the head with the shuttle and cursed her to live with a sense of eternal guilt. Terrified and ashamed, Arachne hanged herself. However, Athena, showing some pity, or perhaps wanting to prolong her revenge, sprinkled a potion of poisons and herbs upon the

hanging corpse. At the touch of this potion, Arachne’s hair fell out. Her nose and ears and thumbs dropped off. Her head shrank and her whole body became quite tiny. Her fingers sprung out from her body as eight hairy legs. She became the first spider, and even to this day she and her descendants hide away in dark corners and spin threads from their bodies. As a spider, feared and reviled by most people, Arachne weaves her ancient and endless web to this very day. Spider folklore In Britain, and in particular in Scotland, the story of Robert the Bruce and the persevering spider is much loved and well known. Back in the 1300’s, Robert was fighting against the armies of the English king, trying to gain independence for Scotland. After several resounding military defeats – six to be precise - Robert had to retreat, then flee, then hide. While hiding away in a cave he noticed a spider trying to weave a web in a slippery corner of the entrance. Its first few attempts to secure its stands of the web failed utterly. It did not give up though, but went on trying until at last, on the seventh attempt, it wove a magnificent web that was soon capturing insects that would be the spider’s food. Inspired by the creature’s tenacity, Robert decided to come out of hiding and rally his troops to have another go at the English. The spider had taught him well. At the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314, against all odds, his army crushed the English. His forces at last defeated and drove away the invaders and Scottish independence was secured. It is still widely believed that humans swallow spiders in their sleep – up to four a year. This modern urban myth is apparently untrue. Spiders are very sensitive creatures, particularly to sound, so the noises and vibrations of a human sleeper, especially the breath from their mouths, would scare any spider away. During trials and experiments, scientists propped open the mouths of human volunteers and when they were sleeping covered their beds with a wide variety of spiders. Not one single spider was swallowed by the hundreds of volunteers over several nights of these tests. This just goes to show that, in the world of folklore, you cannot always believe what you hear or read. The ancient Celts and British pagans thought that spiders brought good luck. They would seek out and capture large spiders then keep them in a silk purse that was worn around the neck. This not only warded off illnesses but could attract wealth. Flies, small beetles and other bugs would be dropped into the purse to feed the ‘lucky’ spider. The webs of spiders were also used to stop bleeding. Collected up and jammed into the wound, they were guaranteed to stem the flow of blood. 31

YORKSHIRE LOFT LADDERS, QUALITY YOU CAN TRUST!

These days most homeowners suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept – but where to store it all? That’s where Yorkshire Loft Ladders come in. The company, based locally, offers homeowners the opportunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50 sq ft of boarding and a light all fully fitted in less than a day from just £277 + VAT. But it’s not just the affordability of the package the company offers that makes Yorkshire Loft Ladders stand out as manager Mark Hodson explains:

‘Our watchwords are Quality, Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served tradesmen so our customers are assured of the best job. Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and Value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford.

Our business relies on referrals and we got a huge amount of our calls from people who have been referred to us by our existing customers - that simply wouldn’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles.

At the end of the day the old adage that happy customers lead to more happy customers is true and we work hard to make that happen for every installation we carry out!’ So, if you want to make use of your loft space, however big or small, call Mark on 0800 612 8359 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft!

COMMUNITY INTEREST

HERE COMES MARCH SO WHY NOT SPRING INTO ACTION WITH THESE GARDEN JOBS! March is once again upon us, so welcome is the sight of Spring! After such a cold Winter with heavy snow and temperatures struggling to get over freezing point, we can only hope for a much kinder and warmer spring. March is usually a month where you can dig over the garden to prepare for planting, but as it could be waterlogged due to a quick thaw, I think this will have to be put on hold until the weather improves enough to be able to work the garden without compacting the soil, same goes for the first cut of the lawn. When the weather does improve you can start to prune roses of the bush and climbing variety. It’s also a good time to lift and divide clumps of perennials and even plant summer flowering bulbs. When you start to see shoots appearing in your garden (you may have already), these will need protection from those pesky slugs. Place slug barriers around plants – broken slate and copper tape are effective. For those who have containers and pots in your garden or allotment you can top dress these with new compost. Once you can get on to the soil you can dig some well rotted manure into the flower beds. With the weather being so unpredictable, I think it is best to keep plants under protection and safely tucked away from strong winds, making sure plants and climbing plants are tied in securely. It’s always better to be on the safe side! I am sure the bad weather we experienced in February will pass. Nature has a good way of sorting things out, as the proverb goes “March winds and April showers bring forth May flowers”. Let’s hope that the proverb is correct and we can enjoy some lovely spring weather and enjoy the nature that surrounds us all. On a different note, Mother’s Day this year is on 14th of March, so don’t forget Mum! Instead of buying her some flowers that will eventually die off, why not buy her something she can add 56

to her garden that will give her pleasure for many years to come? Also don’t forget that this month we alter the clocks forward by one hour on the 28th March, so from then we can begin to enjoy the longer days and lighter nights!
