A Warm Welcome
There is so much waste in society these days, isn’t there? Shrink-wrapped vegetables, takeaway boxes, disposable coffee cups, endless plastic bags, clothes we wear a few times then discard, unwanted electronic devices that don’t have the latest must-have features. Sitting in a coffee shop on Church Street during half-term, I overheard someone say ’The best thing about being on holiday is we don’t have to think about recycling’. Quite a statement I thought. Do we really become waste-unaware and environmentally unfriendly when we go on holiday? It would be great to live a plastic-free life with zero waste, but I know much depends on manufacturers as plastic packaging is easier for companies to produce and ship. We still have to do our part as a consumer - whether at home or on holiday.
Look around Whitby, and there are many initiatives aimed at reducing, reusing and recycling items that often end up in landfill. For example, next to our stand in the Co-op where you can pick up the latest copy of the Whitby Advertiser, there is a soft plastics recycling bin for you to pop in bread wrappers, cereal bags, crisp packets and so on. Volunteers do regular beach sweeps, collecting discarded waste, both unsightly and harmful to the environment, and recycling it where possible. Clothes can be donated to the Whitby Wardrobe, which then go to someone who will appreciate and love them. There are two community fridges in Whitby, where local stores such as the Co-op give food to the community which would otherwise have ended up in landfill. Bay Thorpe Shed, a community group which tackles loneliness and isolation by bringing people together to share skills and support others, took away an old wooden pallet I was throwing out at the weekend. Lots of options to waste less and be part of the solution, not part of the pollution!
Let’s all make a greater effort at tackling waste this month. Small changes in our lives can have a big impact in the world we live in.

THE RAILWAY COMMUNITY SHOP AND CAFE ARE ON THE RIGHT TRACK!
When the Whitby Railway Community Shop was threatened with closure after the family who owned the property decided to close it, Joe, Jan, Trish and Sue decided to take it on in October 2022.
However, as it became a bit more difficult and time consuming to run, they called a meeting with the volunteers who work in the shop. None of us wanted the shop to close and Helen offered to take on the role of Manager. Her offer was much appreciated and gratefully accepted so the shop continues to trade with a loyal team of volunteers.
The Shop
We have a good choice of products and hold a full alcohol licence. We also have a suggestions book and encourage customers to tell us what they would like us to stock. We are developing a ‘WHITBY WONDER WALL!’ selling locally sourced products and advertising local services. This is ‘work in progress’! We are hoping this will
encourage local residents to go to the internet less and use local products and services. We hope visitors to properties on the Railway will also use the shop. We will be distributing leaflets to tell residents and visitors about us.
We have a Community Fridge which acts as a food bank for local people. Whitby Co-op is our partner in this initiative.
Community Space
The shop has plenty of space to accommodate four small tables with chairs, including a very comfortable leather armchair – easy to nod off in! We offer hot drinks and cake. Anne, one of the volunteers, is a whizz at baking and brings in her delicious products which are very popular. Residents and carers from Whitby Court are regular visitors who enjoy the walk down to the shop and change of scenery!
The cafe area is also registered as a Warm Space and we are applying for grants to make further improvements. As part of this initiative, tea and coffee and cake are offered free with the option to donate for those who can afford to.Helen is a very enthusiastic arranger of events and there are plenty of games to enjoy. We have a regular visit from a local gentleman to play GO with a local young man! Event details are displayed on a board at the entrance and Helen constantly updates the shop’s Facebook page.
We do hope residents of The Railway and elsewhere in Whitby will come and shop with us and/or participate in the games or events. We are close to Airy Hill and Caedmon Schools and welcome parents and children. We have an excellent range of sweeties!

TRY THE ANCIENT ART OF MEDITATION AND ENLIGHTEN YOUR MIND
Meditation has associations with monks, hippies and bearded gurus.
But meditation is a mental and physical practice that has been around for thousands of years. It has its origins in ancient spiritual and philosophical traditions. In recent years, the benefits of meditation have been increasingly recognized and studied by the scientific community, leading to a growing understanding of its impact on mental and physical health.
Stress reduction: One of the most significant benefits of meditation is its ability to reduce stress and anxiety levels. When practicing meditation, individuals are taught to focus their thoughts and become present in the moment, which can help to decrease feelings of stress and worry. Regular meditation has also been found to lower cortisol levels, the hormone associated with stress, thereby reducing its negative effects on the body.
Improved emotional regulation: Meditation can help individuals develop better emotional regulation by providing a space for introspection and self-reflection. This can lead to improved emotional resilience and a greater ability to manage and respond to negative feelings and thoughts.
and behaviours. This increased self-awareness can help us identify and address negative thought patterns, which can improve mental health and overall well-being.
Better sleep: Meditation has been found to have a positive impact on sleep quality, helping individuals fall asleep faster and stay asleep for longer. This improved sleep can have a significant impact on mental health, reducing symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress.
Improved cognitive function: Research has shown that meditation can help improve cognitive function, including memory, attention, and concentration. This can have a positive impact on work performance, academic performance, and daily life.
Physical health benefits: In addition to its mental health benefits, meditation has also been found to have physical health benefits. Regular meditation has been associated with improved immune function, reduced blood pressure, and decreased inflammation, all of which can help reduce the risk of chronic illness.
Increased happiness: Regular meditation has been found to increase feelings of happiness, contentment, and well-being. This is believed to be due to its impact on brain function, including increased activity in areas associated with positive emotions and decreased activity in areas associated with negative emotions.
Increased self-awareness: By practicing mindfulness and self-reflection, we can develop a deeper understanding of our thoughts, feelings,
Meditation has a wide range of benefits for both mental and physical health. From reducing stress and improving emotional regulation to improving sleep and physical health, meditation is a simple and effective tool for improving overall well-being. Whether practiced in a quiet space at home or in a group setting, meditation is a valuable addition to any self-care routine.

YORKSHIRE LOFT LADDERS, QUALITY YOU CAN TRUST!
These days most homeowners suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept – but where to store it all? That’s where Yorkshire Loft Ladders come in.
The company, based locally, offers homeowners the opportunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50 sq ft of boarding and a light all fully fitted in less than a day from just £277 + VAT. But it’s not just the affordability of the package the company offers that makes Yorkshire Loft Ladders stand out as manager Mark Hodson explains:
‘Our watchwords are Quality, Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served tradesmen so our customers are assured of the best job. Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and Value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford.
Our business relies on referrals and we got a huge amount of our calls from people who have been referred to us by our existing customers - that simply wouldn’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles. At the end of the day the old adage that happy customers lead to more happy customers is true and we work hard to make that happen for every installation we carry out!’
So, if you want to make use of your loft space, however big or small, call Mark on 0800 612 8359 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft!
Prize Competition
Spot the ball with Whitby Town FC
Win two tickets to watch Whitby Town Football Club at The Towbar Express Stadium at the Turnbull Ground.
The Whitby Advertiser and Whitby Town Football Club have teamed up to give the Whitby Advertiser readers a brand new competition - Spot the ball!
You may remember the popular competitions from the 1970's and 1980's ran by national and local magazines and newspapers where the reader would try and pin point the location of a football on a picture of a recent football match.
Our spot the ball competition is a little bit different and carries on the theme from our 'Find the flag' competition. Rather than spot the ball on a single picture, we are asking our readers if they can locate the Whitby Town football which is hidden away somewhere on one of the pages of this months magazine.
For a chance of winning two tickets to see Whitby Town in action at The Towbar Express Stadium at the Turnbull ground, simply find the hidden ball!
How to enter
To enter the prize draw please email the page number where you have found the hidden football, with your name, address & telephone number to : competitions@whitbyadvertiser.co.uk. Alternatively you can post your answer to: Whitby Advertiser, PO Box 120, Whitby, YO21 3ED. Please note, we only accept one entry per household.
The winner will be announced in the next issue and contacted by ourselves with details on how to collect their tickets.
