FIVE GREAT REASONS THAT WILL INSPIRE YOU TO SHOP LOCAL! One unexpected and welcome outcome from the Coronovirus lockdown is the way in which many small businesses have been able to adapt so that they can keep trading. We’ve seen cafes become grocers, restaurants develop collection and take-away services almost overnight, shops develop online e-commerce stores, and salon owners becoming YouTube stars as they share their skills and expertise with ever widening and appreciative audiences. Even during times of crisis, the demand to shop can open up new opportunities in many industries. Here at the Whitby Advertiser we have always believed that shopping local plays a vital role, and no matter what our world will look like in the future we should all carry on supporting local enterprise.

THE FAIRIES AND MERFOLK OF NORTH YORKSHIRE

THE GOTHS & FAIRY KATE

Once, away in the woods about Whitby, in a palace in a deep cave, there lived a beautiful fairy called Little Kate. Kate was clever and could make all kinds of magic but only on one condition – she could never leave her cave for more than three days at a time. This meant that she led a very lonely life. One day when Little Kate had gone for a walk amidst the trees she heard beautiful music and singing. She saw a young busker lad and his dog in a glade, practising his songs and guitar while enjoying the sunshine. He looked so merry and gentle that she lost her heart to him.

An adaptation of Vladislav Stanovsky’s book ‘‘The Twilight Hour’ by Chris Firth.

She kissed the busker, picked up his guitar then vanished in a cloud of silver dust. He climbed on the bike and roared off toward Whitby. When he got into town he was surprised to find that it was full of beautiful people all dressed in black, for unbeknown to him it was the famous Hallowe’en Whitby Goth Weekend. He parked his bike up outside the station cafe and was surprised when a beautiful woman, gothed up to the eyeballs, clambered out of a black Jaguar and approached him. She took one look at the busker in his fine leathers and smart boots and instantly fell in love with him.

‘Hello, young man,’ she said, popping out from behind ‘Hello handsome,’ she said. ‘I’ve been looking a bush. ‘You seem very happy.’ everywhere for someone like you. My husband, the The lad stopped playing his guitar and smiled. King of The Goths, died last year and since then the ‘Yes, pretty lady, I’m poor but happy,’ he said. Goth kingdom has gone to wrack and ruin. Will you ‘You seem quite content. Don’t you need anything at all?’ marry me and be my new king?’ ‘Not a thing, really,’ he replied. ‘Well, except perhaps The busker realised that it was Roxanne, Queen of The a good wife. But I’m far too poor to think of marriage. Goths. He knew that she lived in a white palace high Kate looked down modestly. above the town. He was a practical young man so it did ‘Would perhaps I do?’ she asked. ‘As your wife, I mean.’ not take him long to decide that he would rather be a king in his own town than live in a cave miles away from The busker was so startled that he dropped his guitar. anywhere. Thus, he bowed low and replied, ‘Why, I’d be the proudest man alive if you’d marry me!’ ‘Yes, I will marry you, lady, for you’re very beautiful.’ he said, for he’d never seen anyone so beautiful. She smiled and took a splendid gold ring from her finger. No sooner had he uttered these words than his fine ‘Here you go then,’ she said. ‘Put on this ring and soon leathers turned back to shabby clothes, his boots we shall be married and go live in my fairy palace deep became worn trainers and his hair dropped into its usual mess. The Triumph turned back into a mangy dog in the woods.’’ which ran away whimpering, for it had not much cared The busker put on the ring and at that very moment for being a motorbike. Roxanne could hardly believe her his ragged clothes turned into a leather suit, his scruffy eyes. She snorted disdainfully at his new appearance, trainers into fine pointed boots and his bedraggled strutted back to her Jaguar and drove away with her hair became jet black and spiky. He looked very much nose in the air. He was left there, no decent clothes or a Goth prince. His mangy little dog transformed into a boots, no dog and no guitar. The splendid gold ring on fine black motorbike – a Triumph Bonneville! his finger turned to rusty iron and no matter how much ‘Now we’re ready,’ said Kate. ‘Climb on the bike and I’ll he tried he could never get it off. hop on. We must be off. The registry office shuts at five.’ From that day on the busker travelled far and wide The busker hesitated and stroked his new bike. playing an old three stringed banjo and begging ‘I must say goodbye to my mother first,’ he said. ‘She for crusts at cottage doors. He searched for his fairy would worry after me if I didn’t.’ everywhere but he never found her again. Little Kate ‘All right,’ said Kate. ‘You go on ahead. But mind that was happy back in her cave with the guitar. She learned you come back here before three days are up. The bike to play it very well and wrote beautiful songs of lost love and heart-break, many of which are still sung up and will bring you back safely to my palace.’ down the land to this very day. 32

YORKSHIRE LOFT LADDERS, QUALITY YOU CAN TRUST!

These days most homeowners suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept – but where to store it all? That’s where Yorkshire Loft Ladders come in. The company, based locally, offers homeowners the opportunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50 sq ft of boarding and a light all fully fitted in less than a day from just £277 + VAT. But it’s not just the affordability of the package the company offers that makes Yorkshire Loft Ladders stand out as manager Mark Hodson explains:

‘Our watchwords are Quality, Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served tradesmen so our customers are assured of the best job. Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and Value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford.

40

Our business relies on referrals and we got a huge amount of our calls from people who have been referred to us by our existing customers - that simply wouldn’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles.

At the end of the day the old adage that happy customers lead to more happy customers is true and we work hard to make that happen for every installation we carry out!’ So, if you want to make use of your loft space, however big or small, call Mark on 0800 612 8359 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft!
