Whitby Advertiser November 2021 Issue

Page 1

Welcome to our November issue Stephen Ault EDITOR Well, another month has raced by, and here I am welcoming you to the November issue of the Whitby Advertiser, the number one choice for advertising in Whitby and the surrounding district. Whether you are a local resident, business owner, visitor or holidaymaker I hope that you will find something of interest in this latest edition of our magazine. Well, it seems just like yesterday when we were enjoying the long summer days and warm sunshine, and now another year is almost over. Publication of this issue coincides with the ‘Illuminated Abbey’, the time of year when Whitby Abbey is bathed in dramatic illuminations once again and the gothic splendour of the ruins is lit up with all the colours of the rainbow. The event is from 23-31 October, and tickets always quickly sell out. It’s such a visual treat wherever you view it from, so have your camera at the ready! Also, as I write this, we are about to celebrate Halloween, so watch out for spooky costumes, ghoulish pumpkins on doorsteps, and ghostly goings-on – be prepared to be scared! Well, Christmas is getting nearer and nearer, isn’t it? Some of us are already counting down the weeks to Christmas and festive goods are on sale in our shops and supermarkets. Tinsel and sparkling decorations, frivolity, festive food & drink and many fun parties will soon be the order of the day - have you booked your office or works party yet or started your Christmas shopping? Our magazine taps into the early Christmas spirit this month as pubs and restaurants begin to advertise their Christmas parties and meals and retailers their Christmas gifts and deals. It’s always worth a flick through the pages of the Whitby Advertiser for seasonal ideas and inspiration as well as solutions for those problems that can arise even at Christmas - burst pipes, boiler breakdowns, accidental spillages on carpets, tyre puncture or flat battery on your car, toothache ...the list is endless. Speaking of Christmas shopping, don’t forget to enter our ever-popular prize crossword sponsored by Whitby’s Co-op and be in with a chance to win a fabulous £10 gift card for the store - that should buy a nice bottle of wine or box of chocolates for Christmas! The store has recently had a makeover and everything is shiny and bright, so pop in and see what’s new if you haven’t done so already, and say hello to the manager Chris and his hard-working team! Our December issue looks like being a packed issue as space is already filling up fast - if you would like to place a last-minute advert for Christmas, do get in touch soon or you could miss out! The Whitby Advertiser is a cost-effective way of advertising, bringing new customers and increased sales so why not let the Whitby Advertiser work for your business too? Just give us a call or email us to discuss your advertising requirements. Alternatively, I am happy to visit you at your business or home if this is more convenient for you. Enjoy the following pages and have a great November folks!

ARE YOU OVER 50 & WEAR GLASSES? IF SO I URGE YOU TO READ THIS... Since the national roll out of the COVID vaccinations I have seen an increase in the number of my patients coming back for their eye test. Many have been overdue since COVID first struck, well over a year ago. Your eyes are so delicate, so important and yet you are likely to take them for granted. I did! Just being overdue an eye test by 12 months can make a big difference to your eye health. A lot of things can happen inside your eyes with each passing year. If you are over 50, looking after your eyes becomes more important than ever as you are more at risk of eye problems. I am seeing an increase in the number of people who are unnecessarily suffering from eye conditions that can lead to blindness such as Glaucoma and retinal detachments, simply because they did not get their eyes tested in time. You may think your vision is good and you don’t need an eye test. But, an eye test is more than a vision check. I do a very detailed health check on your eyes using the Optomap (I will explain more in a sec). You see, there are many eye diseases that don’t cause any symptoms, no pain and no vision problems. But they can be there lurking inside you eyes, and if left undetected can suddenly cause complete vision loss. That is why I have the “Optomap” ultra-wide retinal scanner, at my Opticians. Not even James Cook Hospital has this machine. It can save your vision and even your life. Many Opticians offer retinal photography but this only sees around 45 degrees of your retina (inside the eye). My Optomap sees 200 degrees, over 4X more! What does this mean to you? Just the other day, my sister Victoria who is the Optician at the Skelton branch did an eye test for a man who booked just for a routine check. The Optomap spotted 3 holes in his retina that would not have been seen with a standard eye test! If you are over 60 the NHS only offer a basic eye test that does not include checks like this and you can only have a routine eye test once every 2 years but a lot can happen in 2 years. That’s why I offer the Eyeplan where you can get yearly (not 2 yearly!) eye tests with unlimited comprehensive eye exams, including Optomap scans, priority appointments and emergency appointments. 28

For your complete peace of mind with the Optomap eye exam As you see with the picture of the 3 holes in the retina, this scan, saved a man’s vision. The Optomap has also spotted cancer in the eye that saved that person’s life! If you choose your Optician based on “buy one get one free” offers then stop reading this now. If you choose your Optician based on the amount of care and attention to your eye health and vision then keep reading. You only have one set of eyes to last you a lifetime. That’s why I am offering the Optomap Eyeplan. With this you don’t need to wait 2 years for a routine eye test, you get direct access to an Optician whenever you need, you get a yearly enhanced eye exam, priority and emergency appointments and access to the Optomap technology that not even major eye hospitals have such as James Cook hospital. Until November 30th, use the voucher on the next page to get a free comprehensive eye exam, a free Optomap scan and discount on any glasses needed when you join the Eyeplan. How much would you pay for complete peace of mind for your eye health? My Optomap Eyeplan is now £14 per month but until November 30th, use this voucher to get a free comprehensive eye exam, a free Optomap scan and discount on any glasses needed when you join the Eyeplan for an introductory price of £7 per month, that’s £1.62 per week, around the cost of a loaf of bread! Simply use the voucher on the next page. To book in for a comprehensive eye test with the Optomap at my practice in Loftus, please call 01287 646000 today. FREE BOOK OFFER If you are not ready for an eye test, or if you would like more information on my Eyeplan, including a free copy of my book “The Ultimate Guide To Visiting The Opticians” and a free copy of my special report, “The 7 Ways To Look After Your Eyes”, simply request this by calling my recorded message service, 24/7 on 01287 646007.

YORKSHIRE LOFT LADDERS, QUALITY YOU CAN TRUST!

These days most homeowners suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept – but where to store it all? That’s where Yorkshire Loft Ladders come in. The company, based locally, offers homeowners the opportunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50 sq ft of boarding and a light all fully fitted in less than a day from just £277 + VAT. But it’s not just the affordability of the package the company offers that makes Yorkshire Loft Ladders stand out as manager Mark Hodson explains:

‘Our watchwords are Quality, Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served tradesmen so our customers are assured of the best job. Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and Value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford.

Our business relies on referrals and we got a huge amount of our calls from people who have been referred to us by our existing customers - that simply wouldn’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles.

At the end of the day the old adage that happy customers lead to more happy customers is true and we work hard to make that happen for every installation we carry out!’ So, if you want to make use of your loft space, however big or small, call Mark on 0800 612 8359 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft!

HELP YOUR PET TO OVERCOME THE FEAR OF FIREWORKS by Amy Metters RVN

It is estimated that forty five percent of dogs show signs of fear when they hear fireworks, with many cats, rabbits, horses also feeling fearful. There are many steps you can take to help your pet through the Bonfire and New Year festivities Planning ahead

Making a safe den/room/cage for your pet will prepare them to feel secure, especially when feeling anxious. This should be a quiet area and somewhere your pet is not approached when in there, so they know they are safe and also somewhere they can access when you are not in. Dogs may enjoy having a chew or stuffed kong in there whilst cats may enjoy a heated bed or box to settle in. There are several pheromones products commonly available, dispersing calming chemicals into the environment, to try and help your pets feel more settled.
