www.whitbyadvertiser.co.uk Hello and welcome to the October edition of the Whitby Advertiser, the number one choice for advertising in Whitby and the surrounding district. Whether you are a local resident, business owner or just visiting the area, I hope that you enjoy browsing through our magazine this month.
Yes, October is here and sadly the summer months are now behind us. The weather has certainly been a mixed bag this summer, hasn’t it? Long periods of dry and settled weather, but also heavy rains and storms too, so a typical British summer, eh? Thankfully, good weather extended well into September with a miniheatwave no less, but now the days certainly have an autumnal feel about them – misty mornings, a nip in the air and the nights are certainly drawing in. Don’t forget that British summertime officially ends at 2am on Sunday 25 October when clocks go back an hour giving you an extra hour in bed... or perhaps an extra hour to party – observing the ‘rule of six’ naturally! The mornings will then be lighter, however there is even less daylight in the evenings so you can’t win! This month, our magazine reflects the change in seasons too with local hotels and restaurants now

THE FAIRIES AND MERFOLK OF NORTH YORKSHIRE
MOLLY BLISTERS OF HELMSLEY
An extract from ‘The Fairies and Merfolk of North Yorkshire’ By Chris Firth 2020 – available now.
Once in Helmsley there was a girl, Molly, the youngest of three sisters, who was alas afflicted with sores, cuts and blisters which blighted her body and face. Every remedy, charm and cure tried by her mother failed to heal her. She was a lovely girl, kind and friendly, loyal and trustworthy, and her family loved her dearly. But the villagers, especially the men and boys, were not as tolerant of her looks as her kin were. As time went on and her affliction didn’t heal people began to mock her or avoid her in the streets just in case her condition might be contagious. The townsfolk nicknamed her ‘Molly Blisters’. Whenever she went into town the boys in the streets would follow her and chant out, ‘Molly Blisters, Molly Blisters, she’ll never get kissed by any misters.’ Eventually, shunned and mocked by all but her family, Molly would spend her days hiding away in the woods and dingles beyond the town, avoiding the eyes of folk that might be afraid of or mock her appearance. In her wanderings down by the river Molly often thought she glimpsed Little People but when she fixed her gaze upon what she thought she saw there was never anything there, for the Fay are far too quick for human sight. She thought she glimpsed pretty but fierce looking winged ladies and little pointy eared fellows, dressed in red and green with queer sort of caps. She never told anyone of these half-sightings for she had enough troubles with her appearance to have her family and folk thinking that she was going mad.
be read in a 17th century manuscript, still kept in the library of the Ryedale Folk Museum. The full tale can be found the book ‘The Fairies and Merfolk of North Yorkshire’. Here are some of the cures presented to her by the Little People, which were written down on oak leaves and left under her pillow.’
Some Cures and Charms Taken From The Nine Leaves of Molly Blisters: On Toothache and Heartburn For a nagging tooth use the powder of seven dried snails. This salve when rubbed into any aching tooth or injured part or laid on as a poultice doth give much ease as if by magic. To cure the ‘water-springs’ – acidity or heartburn – the following is infallible if taken in time: burnt oyster, cockle and mussel shells ground to a powder, equal parts, and mixed in worm-water. This latter is prepared by gathering a handful of worms from the churchyard and boiling them. The burnt shells will do good. If Seized With Colic If anyone is seized with colic, and colic water is not handy, all that is necessary is for someone to slip out and catch either a carp or a pike, slit the fish open whilst alive, and clap it on the stomach of the sufferer and lo! A cure. For Fevers A drink made from the following ingredients will do a power of good in case of fever:
a handful of dandelion, agrimonies, ver-juice, rue, powdered crab’s eyes and claws and yarrow from off a grave. These have to be boiled for some hours, and taken when the moon is on the wane. The tongue of a However her life took a turn for the better, and she still-born calf, if dried and worn so that it touches the went onto be a great healer, as is recorded and can spine, will prevent fits and fevers of any kind. 36

COMMUNITY INTEREST
THE JORVIC CHRONICLE SAGA Bill Nesbitt, Whitby born and bred was a renowned local artist and literary figure. A one-time member of the American Screen Actor`s Guild, he was heading for a career in academia but while at university he was recruited by HM Government and spent a career in Intelligence, serving his country. Bill`s writing covered most things, from travel writing, under his own name to works centring on the shadowy world of espionage, which were published under his pen name, Sean Collins. Bill died in 2017 and was unable to complete a lifelong project he had worked on for many years, until failing health brought a halt to that endeavour. Even then he continued tapping away on the keyboard, until the very end which, for him was 12 of the 19 intended chapters of `The Jorvik Chronicle`. Up stepped Bill`s friend and former media colleague, Brian Beard. A published author himself, accomplished broadcaster and former history teacher Brian spoke with Bill`s widow Jenny and offered to complete the project. Jenny happily gave her blessing and before he took possession of the 12 chapters, 353 A4 sheets of double-spaced typing, Brian gained basic insight of the storyline. A nine-year old Saxon boy from Streonshalh - Whitby is captured by Vikings in 857 AD and taken back to Jylland – Jutland- where he becomes a Seer and Viking Jarl. As Osgar becomes Sigrvard he moves through the ranks of the Vikingr morphing from raiders to conquerors of Anglo-Saxon England. And as he became one from two cultures he did so against the backdrop of two nations, Danelaw and AngloSaxon England, one from two. The tale was fairly straight forward to that point, the tale of the tale, so to speak, and before he commenced reading Bill`s 43,000-word manuscript Brian jotted down some points for inclusion in The Jorvik Chronicle. Most crucial was how it would end. There was also the not inconsiderable task of transcribing the start of the book as Bill had left no electronic copy.
emanated the two most significant aspects of the entire project. Firstly, and the one which had Brian humming the theme to The Twilight Zone to himself, was the ending Bill had envisaged, which was IDENTICAL to the one formulated by Brian. That was the good news. The bad news came as Brian was sifting through Bill`s research to help him work on two important aspects of the project; the bridge between Bill`s original work and the continuation of the Chronicle and the, as yet, unwritten final section. A small piece of paper, in Bill`s beautiful copperplate handwriting, fell out of one of the folded sheets. On it was the following note, to himself - ` Print off Chapters 13, 14 and 15`. HORROR! Somewhere there were three missing chapters with myriad potential affects on the entire project – 6,500 words to be precise. Jenny and the family searched everywhere; no memory sticks, floppy disks, audio recordings, no printed record of the missing chapters, nothing. Fortunately, what did come to light was Bill`s ancient laptop which, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, was hundreds of miles away and inaccessible. Thankfully, eventually, the missing chapters were soon on their way to Brian and the saga could continue. Brian takes up the story. “What began as a labour of love to complete the legacy to a good friend soon became a passion, and then an obsession. That was intensified by the symbiosis I found between my train of thought and Bill`s, almost as if he were seated next to me as I wrote. The Chronicle became organic, developed a life of its own, to the extent that it was almost like a pair of hands reaching out from the story, grabbing me by the throat and pulling me into the 9th century setting. It not only became part of my life, it became my life. Late nights, early mornings and sometimes getting up in the middle of the night and writing more because ideas whirling around in my head prevented sleep.” The icing on the cake, at the completion of The Jorvik Chronicle, was the acceptance of the novel, Brian`s first, by mainstream publishers Austin Macauley – all 111,011 words- a genuine collaborative work which is due for publication in time for Christmas.
Jenny Nesbitt then provided Brian with Bill`s Bill, whose ashes were scattered by his sons, just off meticulous research and notes, from which the coast at Whitby, will be pleased. 48
