THE FAIRIES AND MERFOLK OF NORTH YORKSHIRE

THE FRYUP FAIRIES From ‘The Fairies and Merfolk of North Yorkshire’ By Chris Firth 2020 – available now. The account below was taken down by scholar and retired school master, Arthur Brandenburg, who was passing though this area on a walking tour in 1863. The girl who recounted the encounter was little educated and unable to record her own tale in writing, but was ‘reet glad’ to be able to have her story set down. Mister Brandenburg, not too familiar with the local accent and dialogue, fully admits that he has ‘gentrified the enthusiastic outpouring into somewhat more opaque English’. The incident was recounted to him by a servant girl, Ellie Rose-James, working then at Danby Castle. She had been up to Higher Fryup dale to visit her ‘fiancé’ and was heading back to the castle.

Encounter with Fairies at Fryup. Ellie Rose-James, 31st April 1863

‘Well it were a full moon but misty like, the moon popping in and out round of the clouds. I was hurrying down past Furnace Farm and I decided to take a short cut up over’t moor so as I wouldn’t be too late back at the castle and have awkward questions about where I’d been. Hereabouts we call this moor Fairy Cross Plain, on account that two tracks cross there and because of the tales that little folk live under the Round Hill just hard by. Well, in the mist, I got a tad confused about where I was and which path I was taking and I couldn’t make out no farms nor features to get me bearings. I seemed to be near the round hill at the edge of the plain. I could see the grass around me fair enough by the moon. Then suddenly, didn’t I notice little lights in the grass? And all about there were rings of light and white mushrooms across the moor. And I mean bright lights, bright as candles, not just the glittering of dew drops. And then I remembered from my Nana’s tales that this place was famous for its fairy rings. Aye, that’s what was seeing, as sure as I’m sitting here gabbin’ this out to you, sir – dozens 30

of fairy rings were spreading out around me over the moor and up over the hill. I were afeared like, but most fascinated too, for they were so pretty. Pinks and blues and yellows and lilacs. Colours I can’t even describe. The further I stepped into the plain the brighter the colours became, shining like lanterns, as bright as the castle’s chandeliers. Music started playing, from inside the hill it seemed. And I could hear chattering and laughter. Then I remembered the tales my old Nana Ruby used to tell me at bedtime when I was a bairn. How there was a little town thereabouts but under the ground. And that on certain evenings – on May Day and Halloween and the like – the secret folk came up and danced about. If you were canny, and knew the right rules, you could pop down and visit them, but you had to mind your manners or they’d never let you back up agin. And I remembered my Nana teaching me this little rhyme: ‘Skip ‘round the rings Nine times, nine widershins Then click yer fingers, and lick yer lips. Let them touch yer fingertips...’ So, taken with the magic of the moment and the memory and the sudden beauty of the place, didn’t I walk up to the nearest fairy ring? Didn’t I say to myself, ‘Ellie girl, keep yer wits and nerves about yer!?’ Then didn’t I skip nine times widershins around that circle, clicking up a finger every time I went about? And after the last time didn’t I click my fingers and lick my lips, laughing and my own foolish nonsense and thinking I’d really better get on my way? I was just about to stride back to seek my homeward path when the ground inside the ring opened up like a little doorway. A tunnel appeared through t’ mist sloping down in the ground of the round hill. From that tunnel a tumble of little people came spilling out with their bright eyes and colourful clothing. Right bonny they were, all dressed in green and red, with pretty little mouths and pointy ears. They swarmed all about me and started skipping and dancing and laughing and clapping. Two little black haired fellows came up to me and reached their little hands up and so I held out mine out and we brushed fingertips. Oh, and that’s when the merriment began. I was filled with the need to dance and with laughter and joy. I skipped and danced about with them all to the wonderful music that seemed to flow all around through the grass and the sky.

They were the most fabulous dancers, and oh they were so pretty. On a certain drum beat they began to skip in a circle, and I along with them. Then upon another drum bang the circle became a sort of line – a train is it they call it? We were all skipping and stepping across toward the tunnel, me along with them right at the back. Into the tunnel they went, and as I approached the opening I could see that far below, inside the hill, there was little town of pretty, red-roofed houses with twinkling windows and smoke curling up from the little chimney pots. They were leading me down into the hill and away toward their fairy town. But something in me knew that if I went down there I’d be inclined to stay and it would be a long time before I saw the real world again. The voice of Nanna Ruby sounded again in my head with that bedtime story rhyme, and it went like this:

‘Clickerty clackerty, skipperty skack If yer dance down with ‘em, Yer won’t come back, Click yer fingers thrice, then slap yer head And ‘appen yer’ll wake up, in yer own bed...’ And though I wanted to dance on with them, and I wanted to be shown their lovely little town under the hill, I knew my place was in the real world. So just as the dance was about to lead me through the door and into the tunnel I clicked my fingers right loud three times and slapped my forehead just like this. The tunnel melted right away, and the fairy circles spun about away across the moor, and the mist came down and the moon dissolved. And I know you probably won’t believe this, sir, but I did awake then, and I was back in my own bed in the servant’s rooms at the top of Danby Castle. I’d no idea how I got there, and none of the other girls had seen or heard me come in. And I know you might be thinking it was all just a dream of flighty, whimsical mad girl, but no it weren’t. Though I woke in my own bed I had my outdoor clothes on, and my boots, and they were covered in the mud of the moors. How I got home from Fairy Cross Plain I’ve no memory. Like I said, nobody here remembers me coming in, and all the doors were locked because I’d been out past midnight. Yet there I was in my own bed and just about able to get up and go about my duties, for I was aching from top to toe from all the dancing. I still don’t know what happened to this day, but I assure you, mister, it was no dream. Of course I still go up and down the dales, and at times I have to cross the Fairy Plain. And sometimes I wonder, what if the fairy rings appeared again? Would I skip round again? Would I lick my lips and click my fingers? And would I this time dance on into the tunnel to see what life was like in the fairy world below? I’d be tempted to. I think I would. But I’m getting married soon, so perhaps it’s best I stay away from such temptations for now.’ 31

YORKSHIRE LOFT LADDERS, QUALITY YOU CAN TRUST!

These days most homeowners suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept – but where to store it all? That’s where Yorkshire Loft Ladders come in. The company, based locally, offers homeowners the opportunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50 sq ft of boarding and a light all fully fitted in less than a day from just £277 + VAT. But it’s not just the affordability of the package the company offers that makes Yorkshire Loft Ladders stand out as manager Mark Hodson explains:

‘Our watchwords are Quality, Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served tradesmen so our customers are assured of the best job. Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and Value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford.

32

Our business relies on referrals and we got a huge amount of our calls from people who have been referred to us by our existing customers - that simply wouldn’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles.

At the end of the day the old adage that happy customers lead to more happy customers is true and we work hard to make that happen for every installation we carry out!’ So, if you want to make use of your loft space, however big or small, call Mark on 0800 612 8359 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft!
