April 2017
Hello and welcome to the April issue of the Whitby Advertiser, the number one choice for advertising in Whitby and the surrounding district. I hope that you enjoy this latest issue of our magazine, whether you are a resident or business owner, or a visitor or holidaymaker to the area. Well, April is certainly a busy month on the events calendar with Easter Sunday on 16 April, closely followed by the Spring Whitby Goth Weekend which is from 21 to 23 April. St Georges Day is also celebrated the same weekend on Sunday 23 April. We mustn’t forget that the month starts with a special day too, April Fool’s Day, with its usual practical jokes and hoaxes – will you be caught out? Here at the Whitby Advertiser, we have no time to fool around as we are always busy seeking advertising opportunities, interesting articles and competitions to fill our magazine each month. Our issue stands at a bumper 104-pages this month and we have squeezed in as much as we possibly can for you. You will find adverts from businesses both old and new, and everything you can possibly think of from bedrooms to blinds, valets to vets, and landscapers to laundries. There is also a handy index at the back to help you find what you are looking for. A number of our advertisers are promoting Easter gifts, events and meals so take a look and see what is on offer! Our ‘What’s On’ pages have plenty of ideas to help you plan your Easter weekend too.
Our prize crossword continues to be very popular, and last month we had a record number of entries. Could you be our lucky winner this month? Get the kettle on, make a brew, and have a go! The prize on offer is a fabulous £25.00 John Lewis voucher kindly donated by Nick and his team at Hendersons Sales & Letting Agents of Flowergate. The lovely folk at Moon and Balloon are running another competition this month for the cutest pet so why not have a go at that too? Entries can be hand-delivered to their delightful shop on Grape Lane where you can fuss over their very own cute dogs that are always sitting in the window! The Whitby Advertiser – the number one choice for advertising in Whitby and the surrounding area, distributing 23,000 copies doorto-door. If you are a business and would like to advertise in next month’s Whitby Advertiser, don’t delay – give us a call today and let us bring business to your door. Have a great April folks!

WHITBY GOLF CLUB CELEBRATE 125 YEARS OF GOLF! 1892-2017
Whitby Golf Club will achieve a significant milestone in 2017 with the members celebrating 125 Years of Golf. The club was originally based at the village of Goathland before relocating in 1895 to its current spectacular location on the cliff tops between Whitby and Sandsend. The anniversary celebrations teed off in early December 2016 with a return to the club’s roots. Permission was granted by the Duchy of Lancaster to play on the old course and a team set about reinstating 4 of the original 6 holes located on the moorland close to the former clubhouse, now the Mallyan Spout hotel.
Twenty brave members turned the clock back 125 years and dressed in Victorian costume. The men donned plus fours and the women full length dresses before playing their rounds using original hickory shafted clubs. The winners on the day were Whitby born Professional Iain Pyman, Silver Medal Winner at the Open in 1993, and his partner Doreen Richardson, Whitby Ladies’ Captain 1990.
• Members launch the 125 Year Anniversary at Goathland, 4th December 2016 For the more established golfer our Adult Platinum Membership scheme costs £715 per year with no joining fee and you can play unlimited golf throughout the year and enter all club competitions (additional entry fees apply). We offer this membership scheme at reduced rates for the under 30s and for those on lower incomes/in receipt of government benefits. For golfers who would like a more flexible membership to suit their lifestyle or who are new to golf we have schemes with prices starting from £249 per year. Our Junior Membership is FREE to the under 15s and £65 for those aged 15 to 17.
Following this start to the anniversary year the club is launching a series number of initiatives and events to encourage new members to the course. If you are interested in joining us at Whitby Golf Club why not consider one of our wide range of membership packages?
If you would like to play regular golf, but don’t want to play in competitions or have a handicap managed by the club why not consider our brand new “1892 Associate Membership” scheme? The annual fee is £125 plus a special green fee rate of £12.50 per round. There are no restrictions to tee times but all are subject to advance booking and availability.
• Club Captain Steve Ellis and Lady Captain Wendy Hurworth play 18 holes whilst taking in the scenery
For more information on our Whitby Golf Club membership schemes or the Get in to Golf programme please visit our website www.whitbygolfclub.co.uk or contact our Club Manager Tony Mason via e-mail office@ whitbygolfclub.co.uk or alternatively telephone 01947 600660.
Following the success of our “Get in to Golf” sessions for Adults & Juniors in 2016 we are running more events for this year. The programme tees off on the 8th and 18th June with Taster Sessions that will give brand new golfers a chance to try out the game for FREE. These will be followed by Beginner Sessions starting 22nd June and Get Further in to Golf starting 7th September. Both programmes cost £25 and are run over a four-week period on either a Thursday evening or Sunday afternoon.

not to mention how light and airy all the apartments feel. The great benefit is that you are so close to all the amenities that Whitby has to offer and with holiday letting being permitted these are sure to move quickly. When are the apartments ready to view?
Chubb Hill Court up until recently was a little run down to say the least but over the last year the building has undergone a massive programme of renovation and a large extension to the rear of the building. The whole building has been acid washed and now looks like a shiny new penny.

Some of the features include communal oak staircase, oak entrance doors, CDA integral appliances, modern gloss kitchens with Corian worktops, Karndean flooring, neutral carpets and fully tiled contemporary bathrooms. What do the Hendersons team love about Chubb Hill Court? All the staff at Hendersons love the fact that every single apartment has a view over Pannett Park and 50

KENNEL COUGH CASES ON THE INCREASE
MONTHLY VETERINARY ADVICE Meg Dale BSc RVN MBVNA of BECK VETS
After the long cold winter most of us have had at least one nasty cold or chest infection. This year has also brought the same for the dog population, with a massive increase in the number of kennel cough cases we are seeing. Contrary to popular believe kennel cough does not come from only kennels. Kennel cough is the common name given to infectious bronchitis in dogs. Just as with colds and chest infections in humans, a number of different bacteria and viruses can cause the illness. It affects their respiratory system, causing them to cough. The most obvious symptom of kennel cough is a forceful, hacking cough, which will often sound like your dog has something stuck in their throat. This sound can often be mistaken for a cough, choking fit, sneezing or retching. In most cases, dogs with kennel cough will appear healthy apart from coughing. They should retain their appetite. It is not usually dangerous and normally clears up without treatment within a few weeks . Apart from your dog coughing, the infection is unlikely to make them feel ill. But in puppies, elderly dogs or those with existing illnesses such asthma and heart problems, the condition is more serious and can develop into pneumonia. These animals should be seen by a vet. Depending on the germs which have caused the problem, some strains can be more severe than others. Kennel cough is airborne and highly contagious, which is why it can spread through areas where lots of dogs are e.g. Kennels, groomers, vets, dog friendly parks and cafes etc. For this reason, If you do suspect kennel cough and want to see us, please let us know when you make the appointment that it may be kennel cough. Upon arrival to the practice please leave your pooch in the car and report to reception as it is better for your dog not to come into the waiting room. It is also transmitted with bacteria on toys, food bowls or other shared objects. Kennel cough has an incubation period of two to 14 days. This means that your dog will have the infection for 2-14 days before showing symptoms so be aware of informing owners of dogs they have been in contact with. Most cases, dogs will recover 94
from kennel cough without treatment within three weeks, but it can sometimes linger for much longer. To aid recovery, make sure your home is well ventilated and avoid using a collar and lead, as any pulling might aggravate the wind pipe further – a harness is preferable. There is no single test to diagnose kennel cough. Usually, if your dog has symptoms and has been exposed to a crowd of doggies within the incubation period, it’s adequate to diagnose them. If there are suspected complications, radiographs can be used to assess a dog’s condition. There are many different strains of kennel cough – as there are with colds in humans – so your dog can catch the infection multiple times. But if your dog has contracted the Bordetella bronchiseptica (BB) strain, he or she will be immune to reinfection for six to 12 months. The nasal vaccine for BB can be given when your dog is a pup, providing protection for 12 months. It takes four days for it to become effective. Although protection is not guaranteed, many boarding kennels require dogs to have the vaccine.

COMMUNITY NOTICE
MAKING TAX DIGITAL
I am writing this article for the benefit of all the readers of this magazine who run businesses or have income from property because I believe that there is very little awareness by business owners, particularly the smaller businesses, of what Making Tax Digital (MTD) means to them. Many of my clients are sole traders who give me their records from which I prepare their tax return and submit this to HMRC. The idea of MTD is to, in the words of HMRC, get rid of the annual tax return. Instead, businesses will keep records of their income and expenditure digitally and send in to them every 3 months what they describe as ‘summary updates’ electronically. At the end of the financial year adjustments will be able to be made before the final tax liability for the year is determined. Payments of tax due will continue to be made on the same time basis as at present. In other words, instead of dealing with your tax affairs once a year, businesses will have to deal with it ongoing with information being sent to HMRC 4 or 5 times a year.
Depending on the size and status of your business the proposed timetable for implementation is as follows:
Businesses, self employed people and landlords will be required to start using the new digital service from • April 2018 if they have profits chargeable to Income Tax and pay Class 4 National Insurance contributions • April 2019 if they are registered for and pay VAT • April 2020 if they pay Corporation Tax. Individuals in employment and pensioners will not have to use the digital ‘service’ UNLESS they have secondary incomes of more than £10,000 from self employment or property.
This is the general position as I write this and there are many things yet to be decided and there is very little detail. Many questions are yet to be answered. For example, the government say they are considering exempting more of the smallest businesses, and deferring for 1 year the small businesses and landlords with annual incomes over £10,000 but below a figure yet to be determined. 98
The group which I feel will be most affected are those who will have to comply with the new system from April 2018, and numbers wise it is the largest group. Many are quite happy keeping paper records and these changes are certainly going to mean a cost in getting computer software to handle the new requirements. I’m afraid it will mean an end to the common system of chucking the receipts and bank statements into a box and delivering it to the accountant to sort out.
Accountants in general are not at all happy with these proposals. Although there is supposed to be a pilot scheme in operation from April 2017 there is precious little time to sort out problems which are inevitably going to occur in large numbers. The system will be backed up by a range of fines etc. for non compliance but HMRC are being cagey about this.
So, if you are running a business, of whatever size, you are currently facing a major increase in your bookkeeping administration and also an increase in costs. I’m afraid that as far as I’m concerned all I see is more work and no real benefit for tax payers. ---------
STOP PRESS
---------
Regarding the information on Making Tax Digital.
In the last budget the Chancellor announced that he was effectively delaying the implementation of MTD for one year and the group of taxpayers affected from 1/4/2018, i.e. small businesses and landlords with a turnover of less that the VAT threshold which is £85,000, will now no longer have to comply until 1/4/2019. A pilot scheme will still run from 1/4/2017 with ‘volunteers’. I won’t be one of them!
This is very good news indeed for all small businesses. However, the problem has not gone away. Maybe the pilot scheme will prove it’s a non starter anyway. Norman Scholes Retired Persons Tax Advisory Service
