Spring has arrived with its warmer temperatures and pleasant sunny days - hoorah! I am so pleased that winter was so much milder than last year, and how crazy were those temperatures during the school’s half-term break in February, eh?! Hopefully there will be no late snowfalls and we can get out and about and enjoy the beauty of gardens and the surrounding countryside – see the lovely spring flowers such as daffodils and crocuses in gardens, fresh buds on plants and trees and abundant new life in the hedgerows. They are all such a joy to see, as is seeing the Whitby Advertiser, the number one choice for advertising in Whitby and the surrounding district, distributed far and wide throughout the area each month. I must say that here at the Whitby Advertiser, we have no time to fool around as we are always busy seeking advertising opportunities and items of interest to fill our magazine each month. As always, we have squeezed in as much as we possibly can in this issue for you. Naturally with Easter falling this month, a number of our advertisers are promoting Easter gifts, events and meals so have a good browse through the following pages and see what is on offer. Our ‘What’s On’ April is certainly a busy month on the events calendar pages have plenty of plenty of ideas and to help you plan as it features no less than two Goth festivals: Whitby your Easter break too. Goth Weekend (12-14 April) and Tomorrow’s Ghost Finally, grab a cuppa and pen, put your feet up and have Festival (26-28 April). A DAY IN THE LIFE OF THE VETERINARY NURSE!

It is soon to be Veterinary Nurse Awareness Month which takes place in May annually. It started back in 2005, by the British Veterinary Nurse Association (BVNA), to raise awareness and celebrate the vital role vet nurses carry out in practice. While no two days are the same, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d like to give you an insight into a typical day for our qualified, registered vet nurses (RVNs) in our Nurse Training practice. 08:30am Arrive at the practice with the other staff starting that day, we have a busy team of vets, vet nurses, managers and receptionists. Greet any of our inpatients and have a hand over from the team who cared from them overnight. Dogs that are able are taken out into the garden for a walk before coming back in to have their clinical examination, medications and appropriate nutrition. 09:00am Day patients arrive for their surgery â&#x20AC;&#x201C; today we have a dog for neutering, a cat for a dental procedure and a dog needing X-rays. Once they arrive the vet gives them a full clinical examination before passing them over to the nursing team to take bloods, insert IV catheters and administer medication they need, under vet instruction. 09:30am The vets may need assistance in their morning consultations, for holding wriggly patients or running tests in as quick as 8 minutes in our inhouse lab. We set up for the procedures. The neutering is in the sterile theatre, we have a specific x-ray and imaging suite and the dental is done a separate room with a brand new state of the art dental machine, away from sterile procedures. 10:30am A major part of the veterinary nurses role is to assist the vet during surgery. The nurse will help the vet anaesthetise the patient and then monitor them throughout the surgery. We have a modern and comprehensive monitor which measures many parameters simultaneously such as heart rate, oxygen saturation, carbon dioxide levels and blood pressure as well as a stethoscope to measure the heart rate manually and visually checking multiple patient reflexes constantly. Our finger is always on the pulse. 01:00pm When the procedure is finished, the patient is taken back to their kennel where they are monitored carefully one on one by the kennel nurse in a warm, comfortable, quiet environment. We have separate wards for dogs and cats, to minimise stress. Thorough disinfection of the theatre is performed before and after each procedure. 01:30pm Lunch! Thank you for the treats you bring! 82

02:30pm Clean all equipment and resterilise for the next day. There is a lot of cleaning when it comes to animals and hygiene! During afternoons we perform free nurse clinics for post operation checks, bandage changes, 2nd vaccinations, dental care, and weight advice clinics. Surgical patients are offered an afternoon walk in the garden, a drink and recovery food to ensure they are able to be discharged. 04:00pm Patients start going home. The nurse will explain to the owners the procedure, home care and medications their pet will need. More cleaning! Thorough cleaning of the cat and dog wards is performed once day patients are discharged ready for new arrivals. At any point an emergency may arrive so it is important to be ready. 06:30pm Phones are diverted to our on call vet and its time for home. At all times we have a vet and nurse on call for any emergencies. 07:00pm All day patients are now home and inpatients receive evening vet checks, with a handover from day to night team.
