– hopefully we have seen the last of the snow now! As we emerge from what has been a rather cold and long winter, it is nice to see the beauty of gardens and the surrounding countryside - daffodils, crocuses and abundant new life in the hedgerows. It is such a joy to see, as is seeing our popular magazine, the number one choice for advertising in Whitby and the surrounding district, distributed far and wide throughout the area each month. I hope that you will enjoy this April issue of the Whitby Advertiser - whether you are a resident or business owner, or a visitor or holidaymaker to the area, I am sure that you will find something of interest as you browse the following pages. April is certainly a busy month on the events calendar as it starts with Easter weekend, then there is St Georges Day which is celebrated on Monday 23 April, closely followed by the Spring Whitby Goth Weekend which is from 27 to 29 April. We mustn’t forget that the month starts with a special day too, April Fool’s Day, with its usual practical jokes, pranks, hoaxes and fake news items – will you fall victim to one this year?

We need a good all-round maintenance person to work par t-time to look after our cottages. Ideally candidates will live in Whitby or nearby and be flexible time-wise - a lot of the work can be at the weekend during the changeovers. A good knowledge and experience of working across the trades is essential. HOUSEKEEPERS

We’re looking for additional housekeepers to look after our luxur y cottages as we continue to grow. Ideally applicants will be mature, happy to work to high standards and have good attention to detail; previous experience is not necessar y - if you have your own home and are house-proud, you’ll know how to do the job! - however we do provide training. Also, applications from husband and wife teams are welcome, for light maintenance/gardening work on selected proper ties. Our changeover days are Fridays and/or Saturdays and for shor t breaks, Mondays. The hours are between 10am and 3pm. The cottages are in Whitby and Sandsend so you must own a car ; you may wish to take on one cottage or be able to work more days and look after several. A PLACE TO VISIT... THE ESKDALE INN

The Eskdale Inn is a beautiful and traditional Free House in the heart of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park. Close by the river Esk flows past the bottom of the beer garden and quoits pitches. A pretty view over the fields next to the river is towards the picturesque village of Castleton. The Castleton railway station is just a very short walk away and the pub is on the new Coast-to-Coast route. The Landlady Clare is rightly proud of her establishment and a warm welcome is guaranteed to well behaved pets and children! Regular events at the pub include charity pool teams for the Esk Valley Lifeline for local good causes, and quoits teams in the summer. Volunteers for both teams are very welcome. There is a Quiz Night every Sunday evening. Clare has an excellent, regularly updated menu catering to all tastes, embracing the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Good Pub Grubâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; ethos. Anyone with dietary requirements is advised to call ahead. In term times two children under age ten eat free when accompanied by two paying adults.

The kitchen is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 12 noon to 8.30pm. Sunday lunches are available from noon to 5pm and you are well advised to book. Portions are renowned for their generosity and desserts include a secret recipe sticky toffee pudding to die for! As a Free House Clare is able to have many guest beers rotating regularly from the Helmsley Brewery and other microbreweries in the local area and her prices are extremely reasonable. If you have a particular event that needs catering for Clare is very skilled at providing buffets or memorable menus in order to make your special day complete. BREWERS CELEBRATE 250 YEAR OLD HISTORICAL ACHIEVEMENT!

In 1768, the intrepid explorer and navigator Captain James Cook set sail on an epic voyage on HMS Endeavour. Successfully commanding his crew past the unpredicatable waters of the South Pacific island of Tahiti. Continuing his exploration, Cook circumnavigated and mapped the uncharted coastline of New Zealand, before sailing beyond the edge of the map to claim Australia for the British Crown.

To mark the 250th anniversary of the beginning of this land mark voyage, a new gin ‘Endeavour’ is a fitting homage to Captain Cook’s first voyage and the discovery of new horizons!

The idea was initially born when Drs Lynette and Mike Bandeira purchased the Captain Cook Brewery & White Swan in 2016 and took full management control in July 2017.

They then subsequently purchased the Bay Horse in Hutton Rudby in August 2017 and in parallel agreed with the owners, John & Stuart Toovey, of the Stokesley Brewing Company / Wainstones Brewery to move their brewery into the Bay Horse which was completed in October 2017.

The idea of producing gin in the former Wainstones Brewery was formulated by Mike Bandeira and John Toovey together with the Head Brewer at the Captain Cook Brewery, Alan Platts and Ross Buchanan, who is the Head Brewer of the Bay Brewery / Wainstones brewery. 20

• Emily meets Emily - as per tradition the Copper Still is named ‘Emily’ after Emily Farman , Manageress of the White Swan as all stills have ladies names. They formed in November 2017 a company called Spirit of Captain Cook Limited. In December all 4 attended a 3 day distilling course and having refurbished the former brewery based on the Terry Dicken Industrial Estate in Stokesley commenced experimentation on a stainless steel still and then onto a Copper Alembic for 3 months. After looking at all the variables as they were using 10 botanicals and using different maturation times and controlling temperatures they hit upon the version of the recipe they and their band of testers liked. In parallel they decided on using Endeavour as a brand name as Captain Cook Brewery has a beer called Endeavour. The first new product to be launched this month is Endeavour, First Voyage , a 42% ABV gin hand crafted in small batches utilising 10 botanicals including heather tips from the North Yorkshire moors.

The brewers plan many other gins, as well as vodkas, rums and liqueurs which will follow in the future.

Think about which searches and surveys you will need. Searches are essential if the property is mortgaged. Surveys are more expensive but provide more protection. If selling, gather together your mortgage account details, any deeds you hold and installation certificates or guarantees for work done on the property. Moving house is often thought to be one of the one most most stressful things someone will do in their lifetime. Once your offer is accepted, the bulk of the conveyancing has been done, and you reach the point of knowing when exchange and completion are going to happen – you’re then faced with the dreaded prospect of packing. It’s safe to say you underestimate how much you own until you begin to try to squeeze all your worldly possessions into cardboard boxes. We thought we’d help out with a few tips: • The ‘One year rule’ when sorting through items ask yourself – have I used this / worn this / even looked at this – in the past 12 months? If the answer is ‘no’ then it likely doesn’t need to come with you. It is a good idea to get rid of as many non-essentials as possible ready to make a fresh start and move onto a new chapter. Be ruthless!.. • What to do with items you no longer want Selling items which you are not going to take with you online could contribute towards buying new items. Car boot sales are another option and charity shops always welcome donations. ‘The British Heart Foundation’ will collect all kinds items for free (including sofa’s, tables, beds, TV’s, clothes, books, DVDs ..etc..) Call their Scarborough store 01723 821608 for more information. • Pack in Order – This may sound very obvious advice – but packing your least essential items first, and packing your most-used items last, is a very sensible idea indeed. Boxsets, Xmas decorations and knick-knacks won’t be missed a few weeks before your big move. Clearly labelling boxes, as you pack, will mean you can unpack in a logical order when you reach your new home. • Free packing materials – When you are paying for boxes the cost can soon start to add up – especially as you are likely to need quite a few. Shops are often happy to give away their empty boxes for free. Save bubble wrap and polystyrene peanuts from bits and bobs you buy online ready 48

to re-use and newspaper is great for wrapping around crockery, cutlery..etc... Also packing smaller items inside larger items helps to protect them and saves space. QUICK FIRE TIPS: • Stop buying food a week before your moving date (to avoid the guilt of throwing perfectly decent food away) • De-frost the fridge one day before you move and give it a good clean • Pack heavy items into smaller boxes and lighter items into larger boxes (have you ever tried carrying a large box of books?) • Put together a mini cleaning kit ready for having a good wipe around after your boxes have been lifted out of the property • Zip-lock sandwiches bags are unbelievably handy for tiny items such as screws, brackets, door-knobs..etc.. • Make job number one, when you get to your new place, making your bed. Even if the house turns into a mess of belongings, cardboard and plastic bags it will be nice to climb into bed at the end of a long day of unpacking (without hunting around for your pillows and bedding) • Pack a little overnight bag. If you don’t get everything unpacked in one day – then having a bag with your toiletries, laptop, spare set of clothes..etc.. will be a godsent.

March is here and spring is starting to unfold. It’s the time of the year for birth, new life and all things cute and fluffy! Chicks, lambs and, of course....... Puppies! Pups are without a doubt some of the most adorable things on the planet. Parenting a new puppy, however, is no walk in the park. Here’s a guide from us here at The Beck Veterinary Practice to help you care for the new addition to the family. Establishing good and healthy habits in those first few sleep-deprived weeks will lay the foundation for many dog-years of happiness. Up to 8 weeks - before you bring your puppy home

The previous owner should have: organised first puppy vaccination, started toilet training and socialisation .

Before bringing them home you’ll need to prepare by: • Organising a crate/safe haven and a cosy bed in a quiet, warm place where your puppy can rest undisturbed. • Taking a blanket from the puppy’s first home away with you for familiarity and comfort. • Finding a vet good vet (hint hint!), puppy parties and getting pet insurance are all necessities that are often overlooked. We are running free puppy parties in March. • Chewing is natural for puppies, so do not discourage - ensure you let the puppy chew things you have chosen.Removing anything poisonous or that you don’t want them chewing.

8-12 weeks - bringing your puppy home This is an important time for your puppy, what they learn and experience now will shape future behaviour. Your puppy isn’t fully vaccinated but it’s important to continue socialisation by exposing your puppy positively to experiences like: • Meeting other healthy and well behaved, fully vaccinated dogs and cats. • Carrying them around outside to introduce them to new people, sights and sounds. • Gradually introducing them to the car, grooming and bathing. • Being handled gently- having their ears, eyes and feet handled can make your puppy a joy for the vet to examine in future! 88

You should also: • Begin to leave them alone for short periods to prevent separation related negative behaviours. • Establish a consistent routine and rules. Reward good behaviour and ignore bad behaviour. • Feed them a good quality puppy food suitable for their breed and size. Use the feeding guidelines from the bag and weigh the food. • Continuing toilet training 12 weeks onwards - puppy training & socialisation Your puppy can have their second vaccinations now At the same time, chat to us about worming/ flea treatment protocols, and neutering. • Once your puppy is fully vaccinated, you can socialise them outside. Peak socialisation period in your puppy’s life occurs at age 6-18 weeks. It is during this phase they need to become accustomed to as many new experiences as possible. • At this age a puppy will quickly and willingly learn many training commands including sit, stay and heel. He/she will need to be house trained and learn to walk on a lead. Use your puppy’s favourite treats and toys for motivation. Keep sessions short and fun; allow plenty of play and rest time. • We recommend taking your puppy to Puppy classes/ Parties. These classes are fun and a must for any owner wanting a well-behaved sociable dog. They are the ideal time to ask for advice too. ! 6 months onwards • Puppies are still learning so continue reward-based training; keep all experiences positive. • If your puppy is ready, progress onto more advanced dog training classes. • Dietary needs will change, gradually move to adult dog food. • Remember to ask us about neutering - it really is the kindest option. • By keeping experiences positive from day one, you’ll help your puppy grow into a confident adult dog, making life more enjoyable for you both. Patience Your puppy will make mistakes from time to time. Most mistakes are natural puppy behaviours. It is up to you to teach your puppy right from wrong in the human world. Patience, praise and commitment will assist your puppy in developing into a well behaved, loyal companion.
