Hello and welcome to the August issue of the Whitby Advertiser, the popular local magazine regarded as the number one choice for advertising in Whitby and the surrounding district. I hope that your summer is going well and that you will enjoy our latest issue.

Stephen Ault EDITOR Once again, our magazine is supported by a great range of advertisers, each offering different services to everyone, making our publication essential reading whether you are a resident, business owner, visitor or holidaymaker to the area. If you are looking to eat out, there is our regular Dining Out guide full of ideas and great meal deals and if you like crosswords, why not have a go at our wonderful prize crossword? The summer season is now at its height in Whitby and in addition to the ever-popular Regatta and Folk Week, there are many events and activities taking place. We have squeezed as many of these as we can into our What’s On listings. I am so hoping that the weather will be like the heatwave we experienced earlier in June so that we can enjoy all these wonderful events and many barbecues, picnics and great family days down on the beach. Also, when the day is done, don’t forget to treat yourself – pop down to your local pub or relax in the garden with a well-deserved pint or a blissful glass of wine! If you are a business and would like to advertise in the September issue of the Whitby Advertiser, don’t delay; call us today. Established for over a decade now, our passion is to fulfill your advertising needs and bring business to your door. We offer a friendly yet professional service which includes our dedicated graphic designer Graham working with you. Graham will change any existing artwork you have for your advert or create an advert from scratch, all at no extra charge. The Whitby Advertiser – the number one choice for advertising in Whitby and the surrounding area, distributing 23,000 copies door-todoor. Why pay more for less elsewhere?

Making holiday memories since 1970 19/07/2017 12:37

TOP TIPS FOR MAKING THE MOST OF SUMMER

With summer finally here, and peak holiday season upon us, we thought we’d share some of our top tips to getting your holiday home ready for the summer. Carrying out checks and any minor maintenance or cleaning required ahead of time helps to ensure the best possible experience for your guests (and makes them more likely to book again!).

Tidy up external areas With the sun shining, your guests are going to want to utilise any outside space your holiday home has. Spend some time ensuring the garden is tidy by scheduling for grass to be cut regularly, any weeds are removed and any outdoor furniture you have is clean. We always advise that any outside areas and outdoor furniture are part of the cleaning routine for you or your housekeeper. Window cleaning We have some gorgeous views in Whitby so make sure your guests can make the most of them by ensuring 44

that all windows are regularly cleaned. Dirty windows can create a bad first impression for your guests.

Appliance checks Spend some time giving the appliances in your property a check: have all remotes got working batteries? Do any light bulbs need replacing? These may seem like minor issues however they can add up and be frustrating for your guests.

Help your guests make great memories Being on the coast, supplying buckets and spades, beach towels or crabbing buckets can really help your guests to make the most of their stay and many will appreciate the thought behind small gestures such as this. QUICK TIPS FOR THE DREADED LAST MINUTE VIEWINGS!

Article courtesy of Nick Henderson Hendersons Estate Agents, Whitby

Many sellers have been there – you get a call from your Estate Agent saying ‘Can a prospective buyer please view tomorrow morning?’ The windows need a clean, the floor needs a hoover and the kids have left toys everywhere. Difficult isn’t it? Do you say no and risk losing a viewing, or say yes and worry that your home doesn’t look quite its best? It is always best to be a flexible as possible when it comes to viewings. Many agents work hard to give at least 24 hours notice but requests can be lastminute. Here are a few quick tips for getting ‘viewing ready’ in no time at all: Buy 4 cardboard boxes The kids room – label a cardboard box with their names. Pile all their toys which are lying around on the floor into the box and hide it in the wardrobe. You only have to worry about making the bed in the morning now! The teenagers room – If getting your teenager to tidy their room has become a lost cause, then scoop up any clothes, and other items which are lying about, making sure dressing tables and bedside cabinets are clear and place it all into a labelled box. Open the curtains and throw open the windows (weather permitting) before a viewing. General clutter – Walk around the rest of your house. What could be removed to make it look tidier? Shoes in the hallway, pets bedding, paperwork left on the side? Pop it all into a box marked ‘general’ and things should now be looking a lot neater. Home staging kit – Now your home looks clutterfree, it’s time to quickly ‘dress’ it. A box containing luxury cushions, fresh matching towels and lovely toiletries is the way forward. Now dress (your property) to impress! Popping some flowers into a vase, and filling your fruit bowl up, will add a splash of colour. If you want to go that extra mile a bottle of wine out on the kitchen top with a couple of glasses, dining table laid out as if you’re ready to entertain, a soft throw laid over the bed - all little touches but make your viewers imagine themselves living in the house. 46

I read an interesting article recently about what potential buyers are actually looking at when they’re walking around a house. Research found this is what your viewers have their eyes on: Windows – many are looking at the views, surroundings/neighbourhood through the windows so a quick clean of the glass, and the ledges, to make them sparkle is advisable. Larger storage cupboards – to see what size they are. Viewers are much less likely to open wardrobes – so pop anything you want to hide in your wardrobes rather than filling up your cupboards. Features – such as fireplaces. So make sure to show them at their best Ceilings – the research found people are looking upwards to check out ceiling height, light fittings and cornices etc. Where as floors, and surfaces, only get a quick glance. So with a short time to clean and tidy, prioritising is key. There’s no point spending hours cleaning inside the oven (they’re not likely to open it) and neglecting more important areas. At Henderson’s we’re always happy to offer further advice on how to make the most of your viewings. Call our office – we’re open 7 days a week.

SEASONAL ALLERGIES IN DOGS & CATS Did you know your dog or cat can suffer from seasonal allergies just as you do? According to a survey conducted by Novartis Animal Health, over half of pet owners aren’t aware their fuzzy family members can also spend the spring and summer seasons feeling miserable thanks to pollens and other environmental allergens, causing them to itch and scratch as if they have fleas. The main two allergies are food and environmental. If your pet gets itchy during spring or summer, they’re probably reacting to seasonal, environmental allergens. But if their symptoms continue year-round, it’s more likely that their sensitivity is to something in her diet. One exception to this rule is when non-managed seasonal allergies can progress to chronic year-round allergies, which we’ll cover later. In people, seasonal allergy symptoms usually involve the respiratory tract. In dogs and cats it more often take the form of skin irritation. This is called allergic dermatitis. If your pet has allergies, their skill will become very itchy and they’ll start scratching excessively. It is common that pets will rub their face along the carpet, chew at paws and use corners of furniture to itch on. They are trying to relieve the miserable itchiness by any means possible. As the excessive itch-scratch cycle continues, the skin becomes inflamed, and sometimes areas of hair loss, open sores and scabbing occur.

Pets with allergies also often have problems with their ears. The ear canals may be itchy and inflamed as part of a generalized allergic response, which in turn may grow infected with yeast or bacteria. Signs your pet’s ears are giving them problems include scratching at the ears, head shaking and hair loss around the ears. If infection is present the ears will smell bad and be excessively dirty.

Allergic reactions are produced by your pet’s immune system. The way their immune system functions is a result of both their genetics and environment. In practices the following often happens. A young puppy begins with a little red tummy, itchy ears, and maybe a mild infection in one ear. His regular vet treats the pup symptomatically to provide him some relief. The next year when the weather warms up, the pet is brought back with very itchy feet, another ear infection, and some hair loss. Again, the vet treats the symptoms until the weather turns cold and the symptoms disappear. Year three and the same pet suffers from May 86

MONTHLY VETERINARY ADVICE Meg Dale BSc RVN MBVNA of BECK VETS

through September with red, inflamed skin, some hair loss, frequent ear and skin infections, and a tendency to chew their paws or scratch until he bleeds. By year five, all the symptoms have grown significantly worse and the animal’s suffering is now year-round. The pet’s regular vet continues to treat the symptoms rather then the find out the cause.

This is usually the case with seasonal environmental allergies. The more your pet is exposed to the allergens he’s sensitive to, the more intense and long-lasting his allergic response becomes. Here at Beck Veterinary Practice we want what is best for both pet and owner. From the outset, we aim to address the potential root causes at the first sign of an allergic response at as young an age as possible. We do this to reduce the risk of an escalating response year after year. Although we will treat the symptoms to help relieve the discomfort of your pet, be assured your vet will put on their Sherlock Holmes head and work along side you through a process of elimination to find the main cause (or causes!) of your pet’s allergies. Come and visit us if your are concerned and any of the symptoms sound familiar. Although we want to treat the symptoms and help relieve your pet’s discomfort, we are not about a quick, short-term fix and want to get to the rout of the problem.

A few common treatments, most of which you can do at home, include: • Frequent baths give complete, immediate relief to an itchy pet and wash away the allergens on the coat and skin. A range or special shampoos are available from us, your vet will advise the most appropriate one for your pet. • Foot soaks are also a great way to reduce the amount of allergens your pet tracks into the house and spreads all over her indoor environment.

• Keep the areas of your home where your pet spends most of her time as allergen-free as possible. Vacuum and clean floors and pet bedding frequently using simple, non-toxic cleaning agents rather than household cleaners containing chemicals. • A change to a specialist anti-inflammatory diet such as ‘Hill’s Z-D Allergy and Skin Care’.

• Individually formulated regular allergy vaccines to help reduce sensitivity, changes of routine (e.g. you may walk your dog past field full of a certain culprit allergen).
