December 2017

Hello and welcome to the December edition of the Whitby Advertiser, the number one choice for advertising in Whitby and the surrounding district. I hope that you enjoy this Christmas edition of our magazine, whether you are a local resident, business owner, or a visitor or holidaymakers our lovely town. Hasn’t this year flown by? It doesn’t seem five minutes ago when we were enjoying the long summer days and warm sunshine, ice cream, and family days on the beach and now December is already here! The shops are full of Christmas goods and festive lights, and Christmas trees and decorations are up all around the town. As I write this, the town has just enjoyed its Christmas Festival organised by Whitby Town Council which was an excellent weekend of festive fun and activities and the weather, though cold, remained dry throughout. Don’t despair if you missed this though – there are lots more festive events to come this month including Winterfest, Robin Hoods Bay Victorian Weekend and the brilliant St Mary’s Christmas Tree Display – check out our What’s On pages for details of these and other festive events taking place during December. Our 112-page bumper December issue has everything you need for this special time of the year – ideas for Christmas gifts, Christmas meal deals at local pubs and restaurant as well as tradesmen who can help out with those frustrating problems that have an habit of occurring just when you don’t want them to - car and boiler breakdowns, burst pipes and other emergencies. There are the usual bargains to be had on our Line Ads pages and of course our ever-popular prize crossword which has a real treat as a prize this month - a signed copy of ‘The House on Baxtergate’ which is an exciting romantic novel set in Whitby! Put your feet up, pour a glass of mulled wine or some other pre-Christmas tipple, have a go at the crossword and enjoy our magazine! It has been a great year for the Whitby Advertiser. Our print run of 23,000 copies covers an ever-growing distribution area - the whole of Whitby and villages reaching far up into the Esk Valley, and coastline villages northwards including Skelton and Salturn and southwards down to Cloughton on the outskirts of Scarborough. This is complemented by our stand at the Co-op supermarket in Whitby which has seen a marked increase in the number of copies collected by visitors to the store this year. Finally, a big thank you to all our advertisers, readers, the manager Dennis Gilroy and his staff at the Co-op , and everyone involved in the production and delivery of the Whitby Advertiser for your great support over the past year and for making the Whitby Advertiser the success it is today. I would like to wish each and every one of you a very Merry Christmas indeed!

NOMINATE A WORTHY NEIGHBOUR FOR A CHRISTMAS HAMPER!

Article courtesy of Nick Henderson Hendersons Estate Agents, Whitby

When the Whitby Advertiser asked me for the Christmas edition of the editorial we write on a monthly basis, I thought, no way, not another year! I am sure you will all agree that the last 12 months has flown by and it only seems like a few months since last Christmas. This time of year, we normally write about how best to present your home during the dark winter months, getting the side lights on, lighting the fire and creating that cosy warm feeling that we all enjoy after enduring a cold winter’s day. However this year we thought let’s have something that applies to everyone rather than just the home movers. Christmas is a time for giving and here at Hendersons we are offering you the opportunity to give back to a worthy neighbour, be that someone who is elderly, in need or home alone over the festive period. All you need to do is nominate a neighbour who fits the bill and one lucky winner will be picked at random to receive a Hendersons Christmas Hamper, jam packed with goodies to enjoy over the season of goodwill*. To nominate a neighbour please fill in the form below:

!

*Terms and conditions: all entrants must be received by the 16th December with the winner being announced on 18th December, multiple entries for the same Nominated Neighbour will be treated as one entry. The winner will be picked at random and will be announced on our social media platforms. The hamper will then be hand-delivered to the lucky winner by members of the Hendersons Team.

Nominee Name Nominee Address Nominated Neighbour(s): Neighbour’s Address: Why do you think this person should receive the Hendersons Christmas Hamper:

MAKE THIS CHRISTMAS A CRACKER!

With the festive period just around the corner, the countdown to Christmas is well and truly on! This is a peak time for holiday cottage owners, with many of Whitby’s cottages booked months in advance by those looking for an extra-special Christmas by the sea. You can help make their stay a Christmas to remember by following our top tips! Decorations Putting up decorations helps to create a festive and cosy atmosphere for your guests and goes a long way to making their Christmas or New Year break a special one. Think about putting up a tree for your guests and decorating external areas with lights to create a great first impression on their arrival. Cooking and Dining Consider how easy it will be for guests to create their own Christmas meals in your holiday home: do you provide the necessary equipment to cook a Christmas dinner? Make sure that you provide adequate roasting dishes, a gravy boat, champagne flutes and Pyrex dishes.

It’s also important to ensure that guests have adequate seating to dine together in your cottage, especially over the Christmas period where family meals together are more frequent. Logs and Kindling If your property has a wood-burning stove one gesture your guests are sure to appreciate during the winter months is a supply of logs or kindling. Consider providing guests with a start-up pack of these items and suggesting locations where additional supplies can be purchased if they require. Christmas Treats Everyone loves a treat at Christmas and your guests are no different. Why not get their holiday off to a great start by leaving them a small gift such as chocolates, small stocking fillers for children or even just a handwritten Christmas card to wish them an enjoyable stay. We wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Love from - The Team at Ingrid Flute’s Yorkshire Holiday Cottages Article courtesy of Ingrid Flute’s Yorkshire Holiday Cottages

CHRISTMAS DANGERS FOR YOUR PETS Winter and the festive season both presents a world of hidden dangers to our four-legged friends, from poisionous plants to battery powered problems. Many owners are blissfully unaware of just how many of our festive favourites spell out trouble on many levels for our beloved pets. We have given you a few of the most common Christmas dangers around the home for your pet below. It goes without saying, if in doubt about your pet’s health contact us immediately and will advise you. Sub zero temperatures and candle light walks. Most of us will struggle to walk you dog in day light hours at the moment so the use of illuminated collars, reflective leads and fluorescent jackets is vital to making sure both traffic and other pedestrians can see both you and your dog. Also, take note of the temperature and how many extra layers you put on.... then take a moment to consider your dog. Geriatric, pediatric, and fine coated dogs are more susceptible to losing heat and suffering from hypotherima, so a dog jacket may be a kind early Christmas present (a fluorescent one will serve two purposes). Should you get separated from your little friend, they will be more visible to all and have more chance of maintaining a reasonable body temperature too. Now for festive foods....top of the list...Chocolate! The chemical theobromine, which is a bit like caffeine, is found in chocolate and is very toxic to dogs. Even small amounts can cause agitation, hyperexcitability, tremors, convulsions and problems with the heart. The darker the chocolate, the more higher levels of theobromine become – with cooking chocolate the most dangerous! Avoid putting any chocolate on or under the Christmas tree, as the temptation might be too great for our four legged friends. Owners often forget about chocolate coins and tree decorations. One of the most overlooked....Grapes Grapes and their dried products (currants, sultanas and raisins) are toxic to dogs. Ingestion of even a small quantity can cause severe kidney failure. Keep them out of reach of your dog! Bones..... Once cooked all bones become brittle and splinter easily. This can lead to fragments potentially getting ‘stuck’, causing gut irritation and perforation or even just difficulty toileting . The best thing to do is take all bones and carcasses straight outside into a sealed bin to avoid any problems. 96

MONTHLY VETERINARY ADVICE Meg Dale BSc RVN MBVNA of BECK VETS

Onions (and garlic, leeks, shallots and chives) These all belong to the Allium species of plants and can cause toxicity, whether uncooked or cooked. Initially there can be vomiting and diarrhoea but the main effect is damage to red blood cells, resulting in anaemia. It is a really good idea not to give your pet any left overs as both them and you could regret it later. Decorations Whilst not often toxic they can still cause significant problems if ingested. Baubles will tend to splinter or smash into shards which can cause irritation, perforation or blockages and dogs and cats tend to enjoy playing with and eating tinsel. This can bunch up and cause blockages. Your dog or cat may also get a nasty shock if they chew through the electrical cable for your Christmas lights - and don’t forget the fire hazard. Christmas trees, holly, mistletoe and poinsettia All of these pretty types of festive foliage are mildly toxic if ingested and can cause vomiting, drooling, diarrhoea to name a few. Pine needles in themselves can get stuck in paws and cause irritation as well as potentially causing irritation or perforation of the intestines if eaten. Vacuum daily and ideally keep plenty of water in the bucket to help reduce the number of fallen needles. Batteries Ingestion of batteries is more common at this time of year. If the battery is chewed and pierced it can cause chemical burns and heavy metal poisoning. If they are swallowed whole it is possible they will cause an obstruction. All batteries are potentially toxic so if you suspect your dog has chewed or swallowed a battery speak to your vet. Presents Be sure to keep any presents that may contain chocolate/alcohol/batteries out of reach (a good excuse to have a shake of that mystery gift). A lot of families buy their furry little friends their own presents to open with the family on Christmas day. This is great, but remember your pet doesn’t know how to differentiate between human and animal presents when you are not there to help out! From everyone at the Beck Veterinary Practice, have a very Happy AND save Christmas
