Well Here we are in December - hasn’t this year flown by? It doesn’t seem five minutes ago when we were enjoying the long summer heatwave with barbecues, picnics and family days down on the beach; now the shops are full of Christmas goods & festive lights, and all around the town and in the surrounding villages you can find Christmas trees, lights & snowy decorations. As I write this, Whitby has just enjoyed its Christmas Festival organised by Whitby Town Council which was an excellent weekend of festive fun and activities and amazingly the weather remained dry and quite sunny throughout. Don’t despair if you missed this though – there are lots more festive events to come this month including Winterfest, Robin Hood's Bay Victorian Weekend and the brilliant St Mary’s Christmas Tree Display – check out our What’s On pages for details of these and other festive events taking place during December. Our 112-page bumper December issue has everything you need for this special time of the year – ideas for Christmas gifts, Christmas meal deals at local pubs and restaurants as well as tradesmen who can help out with those frustrating problems that have a habit of occurring just when you don’t want them to - car and boiler breakdowns, burst pipes and other emergencies. There is also our ever-popular prize crossword which has a real treat as a prize this month: a signed copy of ‘A Journey of Hope’, an exciting historical novel by local author John Watson set in the very heart of the North Yorkshire Moors. So what are you waiting for, put your feet up, pour a glass of mulled wine or some other pre-Christmas tipple, have a go at the crossword and enjoy our magazine!
It has been a great year for the Whitby Advertiser. Our print run of 23,000 copies covers an ever-growing distribution area - the whole of Whitby and villages reaching far up into the Esk Valley, and coastline villages northwards including Skelton and Salturn and southwards down to Cloughton on the outskirts of Scarborough. This is complemented by our stand at the Co-op supermarket in Whitby which has seen a marked increase in the number of copies collected by visitors to the store this year – a big thank you to the wonderful Dennis Gilroy and his staff at the Co-op for their continued support of our publication.
Finally, I would like to thank all our advertisers, readers and everyone involved in the production, distribution and delivery of the Whitby Advertiser for your great support over the past year and for making the Whitby Advertiser the success it is today, and wish each and every one of you a very Merry Christmas indeed!

IT CERTAINLY IS ‘ALL ABOUT THE FIT’ WHEN IT COMES TO BUYING THE PERFECT BRA
In April 2017 Janet Smith decided to ‘go it alone’ and launched her own business under the name of ‘All About The Fit Lingerie’ and she’s never looked back. You will find the shop at 28 Chaloner Street in Guisborough TS14 6QD. Having a bra fitting with Janet and her team is a relaxing and enlightening experience, you are put at ease straight away and they certainly know everything there is to know about fitting a bra for every shape and size. It’s not only about getting the right size it’s also about wearing the bra so that it ‘fits’ perfectly and feels comfortable. You are shown how to do this which is great.
With over 3000 bras in stock and top name lingerie brands including Gossard and Fantasie, it’s possible to find the right underwear for every occasion.
Janet runs the shop with the help of her daughter Alexandra and the aptly named Jennifer Truefitt and there’s nothing they don’t know about when it comes to sizing up the perfect lingerie fit. “You can forget about tape measures as, when it comes to sizing up the perfect underwear, it is all about the expert eye”, says Janet and 99% of the time we are right! Customer service is something the team pride themselves on and if they haven’t got something in stock they will order it in for you, along with specialist surgical fits and sizes. They can help you choose the ‘right’ underwear for that ‘special occasion’, once even helping one ‘mother of the bride’ find the perfect underwear to go with her outfit, on the actual morning of the wedding.
Since launching on her own Janet says she gets many returning clients as well as new customers. “There is an 88 year age gap between our oldest and youngest customer our youngest is 10 and our oldest is 98”, says Janet. “I love the job, you can’t beat it”, she adds. 30

NOMINATE A WORTHY NEIGHBOUR FOR A CHRISTMAS HAMPER!
Article courtesy of Nick Henderson Hendersons Estate Agents, Whitby
When the Whitby Advertiser asked me for the Christmas edition of the editorial we write on a monthly basis, I thought, no way, not another year! I am sure you will all agree that the last 12 months has flown by and it only seems like a few months since last Christmas. This time of year, we normally write about how best to present your home during the dark winter months, getting the side lights on, lighting the fire and creating that cosy warm feeling that we all enjoy after enduring a cold winter’s day. However this year we thought let’s have something that applies to everyone rather than just the home movers. Christmas is a time for giving and here at Hendersons we are offering you the opportunity to give back to a worthy neighbour, be that someone who is elderly, in need or home alone over the festive period. All you need to do is nominate a neighbour who fits the bill and one lucky winner will be picked at random to receive a Hendersons Christmas Hamper, jam packed with goodies to enjoy over the season of goodwill*. To nominate a neighbour please fill in the form below:
!
*Terms and conditions: all entrants must be received by the 17th December with the winner being announced on 19th December, multiple entries for the same Nominated Neighbour will be treated as one entry. The winner will be picked at random and will be announced on our social media platforms. The hamper will then be hand-delivered to the lucky winner by members of the Hendersons Team.

CHRISTMAS POISONS AND DANGERS
MONTHLY VETERINARY ADVICE
Brogan Proud RVN of BECK VETS
Although this time of year is enjoyable for most humans with the high consumption of nice food, it can potentially be a high risk time for our pets. It is important to know what foods and other household items may be toxic or harmful to them. Chocolate – This is a VERY common one. Chocolate contains a chemical called Theobromide which is very toxic to dogs and even small amounts can cause agitation, hyper excitability, tremors, convulsions, vomiting and diarrhoea. The darker the chocolate the high levels of Theobromide it will contain, the worst being dark cooking chocolate. With a dogs high sense of smell they can sniff out chocolate even if it is wrapped up under the tree, so keep it out of the way of your pets at all times. If your pet does manage to eat some chocolate it is important to contact your vet as soon as possible as they will be able to calculate the toxicity levels and advise accordingly. If possible have the wrapper and quantity consumed to hand. White chocolate does not contain high levels of Theobromide so not usually considered toxic to our pets. Christmas Pudding/ Mince Pies (grapes, dried vine fruit – currants, sultanas and raisins) – These are all toxic to dogs and even small amounts can cause severe kidney failure. It is important to contact your vet as soon as possible. Onion, garlic, leeks, shallots and chives – Whether cooked or uncooked the ingestion of these vegetables can cause vomiting and diarrhoea. They can also cause damage to the red blood cells which can make your pet become anaemic, this may not happen until several days after ingestion. Macadamia nuts – These can cause lethargy, high body temperature, tremors and joint stiffness in dogs. Alcohol – This will have a similar effect to your pet as it would to a human, they may seem wobbly and drowsy. Alcohol consumption in pets can lead to a low body temperature, low blood sugar and comas. Although not all alcohol may seem appealing to animals cream based ones are highly tempting to them. 94
Artificial sweetener – Xylitol – This is often found in sugar free sweets and chewing gum. It is poisonous in dogs as induces the release of insulin resulting in low blood sugar and sometimes liver damage. Signs of poisoning can be rapid or delayed and they include lethargy, vomiting, convulsions and comas. Damage can be limited if treated quickly. Poinsettias/Holly/Christmas Tree – Often only have low toxicity levels but can cause stomach upsets if ingested. Antifreeze – The chemical in antifreeze is Ethylene Glycol which is lethal when ingested by our pets, it also has a sweet flavour to it which makes it highly tempting for them to lick. It is very important that spills are cleaned up and bottles are kept out of the way. Ingestion of antifreeze may cause vomiting and diarrhoea, weakness or an appearance of being drunk. Even if your pet does seem to recover they could have lasting kidney damage. Consult with your vet immediately. This is not an exhaustive list of things which can harm your pet. It is of great importance you call the practice straight away if your worried your pet may have eaten something poisonous, We are here 24/7. We hope you and your pets have a happy and stress free Christmas!

HELPING TO TACKLE LONELINESS IN WHITBY WITH SAFE AND CONNECTED TRIAL SCHEME
North Yorkshire County Council joins forces with Royal Mail to help older people in Whitby stay well and independent at home. There are still places left on the new Safe and Connected scheme so if you know of anyone who would be interested in taking part please get in touch with Louise Partlett. Since October, people over 65 in Whitby have had the opportunity to take part in this Governmentfunded trial. Postmen and postwomen from Royal Mail’s Whitby delivery office visit participants twice a week to check on their wellbeing. They ask them set questions about the person’s health and happiness, whether they have had difficulty taking part in
108
social activities, whether they’ve had problems with anyone bothering them and whether they would like to speak to someone about anything they need help with or that is worrying them. Customers say that find it reassuring to know that the checks will take place and often they don’t need any other support. When they say they would like help, a member of the Living Well team contacts them to talk about their concerns and to find out what support they need. Many customers have already benefitted by receiving advice, reassurance, help with GP appointments, practical tasks and connecting them to local voluntary services. Contact details Louise Partlett – Living Well Coordinator Tel: 01609 532962 E: Louise.Partlett@northyorks.gov.uk Trudy Rodgers – Living Well Team Manager Tel: 01609 536632 E: Trudy.Rodgers@northyorks.gov.uk
