Hello and a most warm welcome indeed to the February edition of the Whitby Advertiser. I hope that you will enjoy reading our new edition and find something to your liking – perhaps a meal deal or something to buy as a treat for yourself or a loved one, or a tradesman to do that long overdue repair or home improvement? Remember, the Whitby Advertiser is your number one choice for advertising in Whitby and the surrounding area, with each issue containing around 200 adverts and 23,000 copies being distributed every month by our hard-working and reliable delivery team! February may be the shortest month of the year, but it is the month that brings us St Valentine’s Day, the day of love and romance dedicated to lovers all around the world. Did you know that around 36 million heart shape boxes of chocolates are sold on this day worldwide? Also, on average, men spend double the amount of money on Valentine’s Day gifts than women spend, and almost 75% of all people who buy flowers on Valentine’s Day are men and over 50 million red roses are given on this day? Hmmm – well that’s what it says online so it must be true! Over 150 million Valentine's Day cards are exchanged annually, making Valentine's Day the second most popular card-sending holiday after Christmas. As well as cards and gifts, restaurants, bars, flower shops and beauty salons become the focus of sweethearts young and old as they express their love and perhaps make a proposal too! Will you be struck by Cupid’s Bow and want to charm your partner off their loved-up feet somewhere and perhaps pop the question too? Browse through the pages of this month’s edition for some great Valentine’s ideas and embrace the playful and affectionate spirit that this special day brings! Whether you are blissfully in love, a superbly happy singleton or someone single and ready to mingle, I am sure that will find lots on offer and of interest in this month’s edition.

MARCH ISSUE
Deadline for advertisers: WEDNESDAY 13th FEBRUARY
Passion may be the fashion on days such as Valentine’s Day, but here at the Whitby Advertiser, passion is in fashion all year round and goes far beyond chocolate and flowers. We have a great passion for not only seeking out advertising opportunities to fill our new issue each month but to see local businesses succeed. This passion is what makes the Whitby Advertiser the success that it is today and the number one choice for advertising in Whitby and the surrounding area.
If you are interested in advertising with us, the advertising section on our website gives all the information you will need, including advert prices and sizes, advertising deadline dates and a handy map of where we deliver to. A couple of important dates coming up are Mother’s Day, which falls quite late this year on Sunday 31 March and Easter Sunday, again quite late on Sunday 21 April. We already have reserved space for advertisers in our coming issues for these events but still have space available so if you are a pub, bar, restaurant, retailer or business planning to host a celebratory event or offering a special promotion, please do get in touch. Our graphic designer Graham is happy to work with you to create your advert at no extra cost if you don’t have your own artwork. Before I go, I encourage you as always to sit down with a lovely cuppa and have a go at our prize crossword competition. When completed, drop us a line with the hidden mystery word and your name will be entered in our prize draw to win a £25 Store card which has kindly been donated by Nick Henderson at Hendersons Sales and Letting Agents on Flowergate. The Whitby Advertiser – the number one choice for bringing business to your door in 2019. Have a fabulous February folks!!

Argyle Court will consist of luxury apartments which will benefit from balconies, en-suite master bedrooms, allocated parking spaces, modern kitchens and contemporary bathrooms. The front section will comprise of 14 apartments which will range in price from £245,000 to £265,000. The rear section will be made up of three apartments which will each have 2 bedrooms and will range from £205,000 to £225,000. There will be no restrictions on holiday letting or pets, making these versatile apartments whether you are looking for a potentially very lucrative holiday let, a beautiful permanent theatre, the Captain Cook Monument and the world residence or a second home you would want to visit famous whale bone arch. This area of the town was developed in the Victorian era as the fishing and again and again.. shipbuilding industries began to slide into decline. The location is superb – the West Cliff is the seaside The ever recognisable Royal Crescent can be found resort area of Whitby. It houses, amongst many along the cliff top where a short walk, or ride on the things, many charming guest houses, The Metropole Cliff lift, will take you to a glorious stretch of beach and The Royal Hotel, a leisure centre, The Spa Pavilion sweeping along to the coastal village of Sandsend. During the Whitby Regatta the West Cliff becomes a hive of activity and at any time during the summer months, bumper boats, a go-kart track and outdoor paddling pool can be enjoyed. As well as being a hot spot for tourists many locals also choose to live in this area due to its wonderful atmosphere and close proximity to both the beach and the centre of the town. It is not hard to see why this prestigious development is already attracting a lot of attention - with several apartments having already been reserved ‘offplan’. We highly recommend leaving your contact details with Hendersons, in order for us to contact you with further information as Argyle Court progresses. Please do not hesitate to contact us on 01947 602626 or email info@hendersonsonline.co.uk The opportunity to purchase one of these desirable apartments is one which is not to be missed.. 42

LOVE IS IN THE AIR... TO NEUTER OR NOT TO NEUTER?
MONTHLY VETERINARY ADVICE
Brogan Proud RVN of BECK VETS
Firstly, what is neutering?
Our general guidelines are:
Depending on the sex of your pet they will either need castrating or spaying, males have both testicles removed and females have their womb removed. The operation is carried out by your vet under general anaesthetic and you will have your pet back the same evening.
Male small breed dog – from 6 months old
With all surgical procedures there are risks which have to be taken into consideration when you decide to go ahead. The vet will be able to talk you through any worries you have when they admit your pet on the morning of the procedure.
Female large breed – 3 months after her first season has finished
Why should I get my pet neutered?
Male large breed male dog – once skeletal maturity is reached around 12-14 months Female small breed dog – 5-6 months old – before first season
Female cat – from 5 months old and over 2kgs in weight Male cat - from 4 months old
There are many health benefits to neutering, Please remember every animal is different and your vet must be happy to go ahead with the procedure including: on the day of surgery. • Reduced risk of mammary tumours (breast cancer) • Prevention of pyometras – this is a life-threatening infection of the womb. • Prevention of testicular cancer • A male dog that is considered cryptorchid (one or both testicles are undescended) must be neutered as the risk of the testicles becoming cancerous is so high. • Reduced risk of prostate cancer • Reduced risk of roaming to find a mate – less risk of being lost/stolen or having an accident • Prevents unwanted litters – rescue centres are full of unwanted kittens or puppies. The price of breeding responsibly is rarely lucrative after feeding, vaccines, worming, microchips and check up have been paid for. • Prevents complications in birth – the cost of an emergency c-section far out weighs that of a neutering procedure and puts your pet in a lifethreatening situation. When should I get my pet neutered? Always discuss with your veterinary surgeon about when the best time for your pet to be neutered is. There can be other factors apart from age and weight that determine when the vet would want to neuter your pet. 80
