Hello and a very Happy New Year to you all! I wish you a most warm welcome to our January edition of the Whitby Advertiser and hope you will find something of interest to you in our handy little magazine be you a regular reader, or a visitor or holidaymaker taking a short break here in town. Yes, the calendar has flipped over from 2018 to 2019 and it’s time to put those Christmas decorations away and welcome in the New Year. I really hope that you have had a restful and enjoyable break over the festive season and are fully prepared with batteries recharged to meet the challenges of the year ahead. The beginning of a new year is traditionally a time to look back and reflect on what has been, as well as looking to the future and what is to come. When i think back over 2018, I see it as being yet another successful year for our magazine; maintaining our extensive door-to-door distribution and seeing many new advertisers come to us for the first time and seeing great results as they promote what they have to offer in our magazine. In this age of digital advertising, it has to be said that traditional print advertising is still proving to be a very effective, flexible and comprehensive way of establishing and promoting a business and its goods and services. Digital and print media are often seen working together and achieving great results rather than being on opposing sides. It is not simply a choice of one or the other, and businesses now choose a mixture of medias in their advertising campaigns. It is unlikely that print advertising will ever be replaced by digital advertising and going forward an increased synergy between the two mediums is predicted.

What are they? Chilblains (also called pernio) are small itchy, red (purple sometimes) swellings on the skin, which if not addressed become very painful and can sometimes ulcerate, exposing the foot to the risk of infection. What causes them? Chilblains develop when the body is exposed to colder conditions, which the tiny blood vessels under the skin in the peripheral areas constrict and shut the blood flow to these areas. Upon returning to a warmer environment there is a delay in the vessels opening, causing chilblains. Who gets them? Chilblains mainly affect young adults working outdoors with inadequate clothing, the elderly whose circulation is less efficient than it used to be, people who are anaemic and some medications can also cause them as a side effect. ow do now have them? The areas of the skin affected can feel like they are burning and or itching, which can intensify upon entering a warm room. There may be some swelling or redness (see photographs to the right) and in some cases the skin breaks and ulcers may be present. ow are they treated? The best form of treatment is to prevent them in the first place, keeping the whole of the body warm not just the extremities. Wear layers rather than one thick layer of clothes and use natural fibres like silk. If the chilblains are not broken then they will benefit from some creams and lotions. If they are ulcerated they will need immediate attention from a GP or a Podiatrist. HEALTH BOSSES URGE THOSE WITH COPD THAT IT IS NOT TOO LATE TO GET THEIR FLU JAB Recently the North of England has experienced some of the coldest temperatures of winter so far and NHS England North and the British Lung Foundation are reminding those with respiratory conditions to look after themselves this winter and that it is not too late to get a flu jab if they haven’t already done so. You may have noticed press coverage of World COPD Day 2018 last month, which aimed to raise awareness about chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) – a condition that causes thousands of additional admissions to hospital each winter. COPD is a respiratory condition that makes it difficult to empty air out of the lungs because your airways have been narrowed. The cold can often help alert people, without a diagnosed lung condition, to identify some of the early warning signs. Anyone who notices the cold weather bringing on a cough, phlegm and shortness of breath, should consider getting it checked out by their GP. Flu on top of long term health conditions like these increases your chance of serious health complications and a hospital visit. Speak to your GP or pharmacist about the vaccination, which is the best protection we have against an unpredictable virus.
