Hello and a very Happy New Year to you all! I wish you a most warm welcome to our January edition of the Whitby Advertiser and hope you will find the following pages both enjoyable and informative whether you are a regular reader, or a visitor or holidaymaker here in town for the holiday season.

Well, it’s time to put those Christmas decorations away and welcome in the New Year. I hope that you have had a restful and enjoyable festive season. Looking back over 2017, it has been another successful year for our magazine; extending our door-todoor distribution and seeing many new advertisers advertising their businesses with us for the first time and experiencing great results. A special thank you to each and every one of our valued advertisers, readers, business contacts, back office and delivery team members for making it another successful year for the Whitby Advertiser and indeed the success that we are today – the number one choice for advertising in Whitby and the surrounding area. Looking forward, 2018 now stands before us and we hope that it will be an exciting year with plenty in store. What are they? Chilblains (also called pernio) are small itchy, red (purple sometimes) swellings on the skin, which if not addressed become very painful and can sometimes ulcerate, exposing the foot to the risk of infection. What causes them? Chilblains develop when the body is exposed to colder conditions, which the tiny blood vessels under the skin in the peripheral areas constrict and shut the blood flow to these areas. Upon returning to a warmer environment there is a delay in the vessels opening, causing chilblains. Who gets them? Chilblains mainly affect young adults working outdoors with inadequate clothing, the elderly whose circulation is less efficient than it used to be, people who are anaemic and some medications can also cause them as a side effect. ow do now have them? The areas of the skin affected can feel like they are burning and or itching, which can intensify upon entering a warm room. There may be some swelling or redness (see photographs to the right) and in some cases the skin breaks and ulcers may be present. ow are they treated? The best form of treatment is to prevent them in the first place, keeping the whole of the body warm not just the extremities. Wear layers rather than one thick layer of clothes and use natural fibres like silk. If the chilblains are not broken then they will benefit from some creams and lotions. If they are ulcerated they will need immediate attention from a GP or a Podiatrist. Let’s start by saying we hope you have all enjoyed the festive period. As Christmas begins to feel like a distant memory, the mince pies have all been eaten and you’ve all got bored of leftover turkey sandwiches, the start of a new year becomes the focus. At this time of year, we keep getting asked the same question over and over again here at Hendersons: Should I put my property onto the market now or wait until the Spring? Unfortunately, there may be many who are not even asking the question and just taking it as a given that it is not worth trying to sell in the winter months.

Let’s take a look over all 12 months of the year and confirm why any time of the year is a good time to sell your property: JANUARY / FEBRUARY With other people waiting until the Spring, there are not as many properties on the market and, therefore, not as much competition. A lot of what is available will likely be old stock and buyers love a property which is fresh on the market. Only serious buyers are looking at this time of year and everyone else is having a rest and staying warm and cosy at home. Anyone selling their main residence at this time will be in a strong position to purchase a new house when the flood of properties come onto the market in Spring. MARCH / APRIL Traditionally a really strong time to sell and many of those selling will also be looking to buy, so lots of 40

JULY / AUGUST With long warm evenings and the garden looking at its best this really is a great time to have viewings. SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER After Spring, this is traditionally the second busiest time to sell. The kids are back at school, many teenagers have headed off to university and the end of the year is in sight, so many are looking to the future and want to buy and be in their new home by Christmas. NOVEMBER / DECEMBER Many of those who sold in Autumn are now looking to buy. Also, what is more homely than a home which is decorated for Christmas? With a competition, you have to take part in it to be in with a chance of winning and the same goes for selling too - you have to be on the market to be in with a chance of selling as you certainly won’t move your property on if you are not! The RSPCA estimate that there are 1.5 million pet rabbits in the UK. And with more children requesting pets for Christmas presents this year, this number will inevitably rise. As the Christmas buzz fades into a blue January, parents and children alike are now faced with the new challenge of caring for their pet rabbits this January. Despite to popular believe, rabbits are not an easy small pet to care for and do require several specific considerations to maintain both their physical and mental well being. However, rabbits are highly intelligent, inquisitive animals. Owning one can be extremely rewarding. They can become part of the family but, as sensitive animals, are best suited to teenagers and adults. Children should only look after rabbits under parental supervision. Rabbit’s come in a variety of breeds, shapes and sizes and each bunny has there own unique personality. Typically they’ll live for 8 - 12 years. Like dogs and cats, rabbits are for life, not for Christmas! Naturally sociable, rabbits like companionship and prefer to live in pairs or compatible groups. Different breeds can happily be mixed. Rabbits can suffer from loneliness and depression if kept alone. Never place a rabbit with a guinea pig. The animals are different species, and do not “speak the same language”. Often, a rabbit will inflict severe injuries on a guinea pig. Some pet shops display these animals in the same cage when they are available for sale. Despite this, they should not be bought as a pair.

Rabbit diet is the single most important yet often overlooked part of looking after you rabbit and maintaining their health. Hay and grass should be the basis of your rabbit’s diet, making up at least 80%. Cereal-based diets (the muesli-type) are high in sugar and low in minerals, and therefore should not be given. Rabbits tend to selectively feed from these, only eating preferred parts and therefore missing out on certain nutrients. Small quantities of high-fiber pellets are a better choice and should make up only 5% of the diet. The remaining 15% comes from a variety of fresh vegetables and fruit, washed before feeding. Think natural – good foods are carrots, spinach, watercress, broccoli, celery, apples and dandelion leaves. Never give rabbits grass cuttings as this will cause serious health problems. Fresh water must always be available and changed daily. Correct rabbit diet is the basis of maintaining good dental and digestive health. By sticking to these simple rules it will help look after their digestive and dental health, and help prevent the all too commonly seen rabbit obesity.
