Hello and welcome to the June issue of the Whitby Advertiser, the popular local magazine regarded as the number one choice for advertising in Whitby and the surrounding district. On the events calendar this month, we have Father's Day on Sunday 18th June, the day when we honour fathers and father figures such as grandfathers and fathers-inlaws. How will your family be celebrating Father’s Day this year? Perhaps a special meal at a local pub or restaurant? Our Dining Out pages will certainly help you decide where to go. Other gift ideas can also be found elsewhere in our magazine if you are looking for something different – perhaps hire a hot tub for a nice relaxing experience, a valet for his beloved car, or guitar, ukulele or even violin lessons?! Also this month, Britain will head to the polls once again for a snap general election on Thursday 8th June. As I write, the media is dominated by coverage of this which without doubt will intensify as election day draws nearer, so you shouldn't forget this date! Could there be more twists that could once again turn this nation's political future on its head? Remember the words of the novelist Louis L’Armour though, ‘to make democracy work, we must be a nation of participants and not just observers’. 34% of people registered to vote in the 2015 General Election didn’t do so. Non-voters could change everything, so please make sure you go down to the polling station on 8th June and use your vote wisely. The weather was a mixed bag throughout May with sunshine and warm temperatures, and also rain and chilly winds. Hopefully June will be more settled, perhaps a ‘flaming’ June with a heatwave? Barbecues, great family days down on the beach and lazy, warm summer evenings - yes please! ROTARY MEMBERS WORKING TO ELIMINATE POLIO
Polio is on the verge of becoming only the second ever human disease, after smallpox, to be eliminated. Throughout the world, polio cases have already fallen by 99.9% from some 350,000 cases in 1988 to just 37 cases confirmed in 2016. Rotary through financial contributions from all its 35,000 clubs, has contributed more than $1.6 billion and countless volunteer hours to protect more than 2 billion children in 122 countries from this paralysing disease. Many Rotarians, including a member of our Whitby Endeavour Club, have been privileged to get hands on experience helping to administer the oral polio vaccine to children across Africa and the Indian Sub-continent, and we are always looking for people to join our club and have the opportunity to take part in projects at home and abroad. The men and women in the Whitby Endeavour club get involved in devising and running events

to gather funds to support local causes and organisations as diverse as St. Catherine’s Hospice, Air Ambulance services, Young Carers, Whitby Wildlife Sanctuary, and Interactive Whitby. We also get involved in practical projects, such as refurbishing Sleights Scout Hut and helping a disabled homeowner who needed doors replacing to enable her to get around on her automated wheelchair. WHITBY LOVER PLANS MOVE OF A LIFETIME
For some people Whitby is just their holiday destination and no more than a relaxing one or two weeks change from the usual sights and sounds of everyday life.
However, for some people the town we call home has a charm and pull that some people can’t resist to the point they turn their lives upside down to make the town they love, their home. One such person is Jill, who dropped us this line:
I have been coming to Whitby for the last 20 years, and I have cherished every moment. Whitby feels like home to me, therefore I am planning to move here. I currently have my own Salon in Mansfield. I would like to see if there is the potential for me to live and work in Whitby, a place I love. So I am going to commence working at weekends to suit potential clients, and take It from

there, hopefully building myself a lovely family of clientele in Whitby. I look forward to meeting new people, older, younger, female and male clients for my new venture in Whitby. Take one example of 15 years of SBC excuses and delays… 2002 SBC were warned that Whitby Piers might only last 10 years without major repairs 2009 SBC were warned that 10% of the core filling to the piers has been washed away 2012 SBC were warned that 32% of the sheet piling to the extensions needs replacing 2012 Environment Agency granted £4.8M towards the repairs needed within 5 years ▪ SBC required to pay the other £3.7M - but has never been included in the budget ▪ The start date has been pushed back FOUR times from April 2011 to: April 2015, July 2017, April 2018, now at 2019 - 2020 ….what next? How much longer? A breach or failure of the piers would risk closing the harbour to fishing, angling and leisure vessels - and the lifeboat station - plus the effect on the Parkol shipyard. Over 500 properties would be at greater risk of flooding. Our tourism industry would be devastated. The car parks on harbour land have brought in £millions since 2002. By law, that ought to be spent on Whitby piers and harbour - but SBC has chosen to spend it somewhere else.

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A COOL DOG THIS SUMMER
The summer is a great time to talk about overheating. While we all love a warm summers day, it can pose significant problems for our beloved canine friends. All over the country, dogs are put in situations that are not safe due to temperature. This can happen even in cooler parts of the country and during the winter, so you should always use good judgment. Here are some hints and tips to help you and Fido out when things start to hot up: 1) Exercise your dog early morning or late night. Since these are the cooler parts of the day, this will make the walk more comfortable for both you and your dog. I’m a believer in vigorous exercise for healthy dogs, but this is the time of year to back off on exercise intensity. 2) Use doggie boots. You can find these at your local pet supply store. If you can’t walk your dog during the early and later hours of the day, this is a good way of protecting him. Heat rises from the ground, especially on surfaces like cement and asphalt, and dogs absorb and release heat through their feet. Just like boots prevent the dog from absorbing the cold in the winter, they also isolate heat. Remember those times on holiday or even a hot day at home when you go to walk bare foot outside and it’s painfully hot.... this is the same for your little friend. 3) Watch for signs of dehydration. Dogs can’t sweat. They cool off by panting, so an overheated dog will drool excessively. It will become lethargic, its eyes will be bloodshot, and it may appear a little pale. If you lift its skin, it will take longer than usual for the skin to fall back into place. 4) Keep your dog hydrated. Different dogs have different needs when battling the heat. Keep in mind that darker coats absorb more heat than lighter coats. Also, overweight dogs are at higher risk for dehydration. Carry a bottle of water when going on a walk with your dog. Better yet, have your dog carry it for you in a backpack or a vest! The water in the bottles will keep the dog cooler and also give the dog a sense of purpose. 5) Find innovative ways to cool your dog. find a spot in the shade and set up a kiddie pool. Lay down a wet towel for your dog to lie on. Or set up a fan in front of a pan of ice. Even use lawn sprinklers that spray the dogs with a gentle mist of water. 88

6) Dogs cool from the bottom up. Make sure to spray the paws and stomach, not just the top of the dog, when spraying it with water. 8) Let your dog check the weather. Dogs don’t have the Weather Channel, so they don’t know why they are being denied a long walk for the day. Allow your dog to step outside and feel for itself that it is too hot, too wet, or too cold to go on a long walk. Instinctually, the dog will understand that it has to shorten its walk, or simply come back inside where it’s safe. 9) Never leave your dog in a parked car. Much publicity has been given to never leaving dogs in closed cars even on cool days, but people still do it. The sun can make the inside of a car unbearable or deadly hot even in cooler weather. If you see a dog in a car that is too hot, you can call the police. They will usually help find the owner and embarrass them enough to prevent it in the future. You often here people say it is acceptable leave a dog in a car if the outside temperature is below a certain figure and the dog isn’t left for long then a predefined time. There are no set rules. If you are in any doubt, do not do it. 10) Use hot weather as an excuse to swim more often! The best activity you can do in summertime or hot weather is swimming. Instead of walking the dog, take the dog on a swim! If you hold on and allow your dog to take you around the pool, it becomes a powerful bonding experience for the two of you, similar to the walk. 11) A final note..... Always provide plenty of fresh drinking water for your dog, no matter the time of year. And always take notice of your dog; If your dog wants to slow down, assume that there is a reason and allow it. Remember you are the human, so you need to be the one to anticipate the dangers and not take a chance. If you are far away from help, the results can be tragic.
