Doesn’t time fly? It seems only like yesterday that we were preparing the February issue of the Whitby Advertiser and here we are going to press once again – this time with our March issue! A warm welcome as always to this this latest issue of our magazine which I hope you will enjoy, whether you are a local resident or business owner, or a visitor or holidaymaker to our wonderful town of Whitby and the amazing area that surrounds it. As I write this and look out of the window, the weather is again dry and mild today with the sun making an appearance from time to time. So much better than the weather last February eh? Can you remember the ‘Beast from the East’ which brought so much snow, ice and sub-zero temperatures for days on end causing so many problems? Aaargghh! Hopefully, winter won’t have a wintry sting in its tail in the coming weeks. Winter can be quite a miserable and long season, can’t it? I just yearn for an end to the cold days and the arrival of spring, as spring is such a beautiful season. I love to see the flowers bloom, hear the birds sing, and get out and about more and more as days get brighter and the weather gets warmer – roll on spring, eh?!! March is certainly a busy month on the events calendar, starting with St David’s Day on 1 March, closely followed by Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday on 5/6 March, then it’s St Patrick’s Day on 17 March, and finally Mother’s Day, falling quite late this year, makes its entrance on 31 March. Phew! And if that wasn’t enough for your diary, British Summer Time also begins on Sunday 31 March (the same day as Mother’s Day) when clocks go forward one hour at 1am (remember the old saying ‘Spring forward, Fall back’?) making the evenings much lighter. Plenty of dates and events to remember this month, eh?! Every month is a busy month for the team at the Whitby Advertiser as we look around for new advertising opportunities to fill our magazine. As always, we have squeezed as much as we possibly can between the covers this month. You will find adverts from new businesses

COMMUNITY EQUIPMENT AMNESTY LAUNCHED ACROSS NORTH YORKSHIRE
Local NHS and social care leaders are calling on people across North Yorkshire and York to return loaned equipment like walking frames, crutches, beds, mattresses and hoists when no longer needed. Last year the NHS launched a national so-called “crutch amnesty” to deal with concerns that perfectly good medical equipment is going to waste. It’s thought that for every 50 pairs of crutches issued through the NHS, only 10 pairs are returned. With a pair of crutches typically costing around £12.50, the annual bill for crutches in the NHS is estimated to be around £3 million.
Councillor Michael Harrison, Executive Member for Adult Services and Health Integration for North Yorkshire County Council said: “Health and social care equipment includes a range of products to assist independent living at home, including This is also costing the local health service tens of thousands of pounds – money that could be mobility and communication aids, shower chairs, perching stools, walking aids and pressure relieving invested elsewhere. mattresses/cushions. NEW WEBSITE TO HELP LOCAL PEOPLE ACCESS MENTAL HEALTH THERAPIES
A North Yorkshire improving access to psychological therapies (IAPT) service, which offers talking therapies treatments, has launched a new website to make it easier for people to access help and support. This includes an option to self-refer online without having to go through a GP. The service, which is operated by mental health and learning disabilities provider, Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust (TEWV), helps people who are experiencing common mental health difficulties such as depression and anxiety. The new website provides a wealth of information about the support and services available, as well as an option for anyone registered with a GP in North Yorkshire to self-refer online, with a series of questions designed to help determine if the service is suitable. One in four people are thought to experience mental ill health at some point in their lives. Problems with low mood and anxiety can develop and make it difficult to cope with life’s daily demands. Significant events like unemployment, relationship breakdown, traumatic events or even stress at work can sometimes lead to difficulties which require help and support.

If the service is deemed suitable they would then be offered an initial assessment over the phone, after which they will be directed to the most appropriate treatment option for their needs.” People can also make an appointment with their GP, who will be able to discuss options and if appropriate make a referral to IAPT or a suitable alternative. Speaking on behalf of NHS Scarborough and Ryedale Commissioning Group (CCG), NHS Harrogate and Rural District CCG and NHS Hambleton, Richmondshire and Whitby CCG, mental health lead, Dr Peter Billingsley, said: “The effects of depression and anxiety can be debilitating and brutal. However, we are now living in a society where there is much less stigma attached to mental health difficulties and people feel more able to talk about how they are feeling.”
Dr Billingsley, who’s a Scarborough GP and Associate Chair of NHS Scarborough and Ryedale CCG, added: “The new North Yorkshire IAPT website is a brilliant tool; it’s very easy to use and crucially, it’s straightforward for patients to refer themselves to the IAPT service, if they wish, without having to go IAPT is a national NHS programme to increase through a GP first.” the availability of talking therapy treatments recommended by the National Institute for Health The site can be accessed on: and Clinical Excellence (NICE) to treat anxiety and www.northyorkshireiapt.co.uk depression. A: Longer life expectancy, combined with the current financial climate of low interest rates and reduction in the value of savings and pensions means more people are turning to equity release to supplement retirement income. The benefits of a cash lump sum with no monthly repayments are easily seen. However, there are a number of things to consider. Some schemes contain hefty early redemption penalties which means that moving house could be difficult or even impossible. It is worth considering how your property may meet your needs in the future. The receipt of a large cash sum could also impact on any state benefits currently being received and will reduce the value of your overall estate for any beneficiaries. Q: What kind of advice should I look for? A: If you are considering equity release, you should take financial advice from an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA) who is listed on both the Financial Conduct Authority Register and also the Equity Release Council Member Directory. SMILE! DENTAL DISEASE IN OUR PETS
MONTHLY VETERINARY ADVICE
Brogan Proud RVN of BECK VETS
Over 80% of our cats and dogs over the age of three require dental treatments due to dental disease. The majority of dental disease is preventable and nearly always treatable.
if necessary. We will then give you a tailored dental plan that will work for you and your pet, whether this is additives in their water or daily tooth brushing we can go through all the options with you.
As many of us know tooth ache can be one of the worst pains to have to deal with, our pets are often very good at hiding pain and we can be unaware of small signs which may indicate they are suffering.
Your pet’s teeth should last them a life time if we look after them well. The best time to start dental care with your pet is from an early age or as soon as you get them. With a little practice they soon become accustom to their new routine.
Some signs can include:
Dental chews will have very little effect if dental Bad Breath – bacteria present with dental disease disease is already present in your pet’s mouth. They can cause a rotting smell and be harmful throughout are more effective once a scale and polish has been the body. performed or if dental disease has not yet occurred. Reluctance to eat – this tends to happen with Prevention is always better than cure - the nurses extreme dental pain but other changes such as at The Beck Veterinary Practice carry out free dental dropping food, favouring one side to eat on or checks if you are ever concerned about your pet’s difficulty picking up food can also be sure signs dental care. of pain. Reluctance to play – this is often a gradual change so if your pet once used to love their chew toys and now show little interest it is worth checking they are not in any pain. Loose/wobbly teeth – your pet’s teeth are very well attached to the jaw bone, so for a tooth to become loose means that the attachment has been significantly destroyed by dental disease. Bleeding – as the inflammation gets worse in the mouth the blood vessels weaken causing gums to bleed easily. Broken/fractured teeth – a broken tooth can die if the pulp chamber is exposed, it can be quite painful and they may develop an abscess. Your vet will be able to decide if a tooth needs to be extracted. Tartar/Calculus build up – this itself does not cause disease but the bacteria that lives on the surface of this does – this is why calculus is often associated with gingivitis. Excess Salivation – your pet may have an increase in drool due to ulcers in the mouth or reluctance to swallow if the mouth is sore. This can also cause staining on the fur round the mouth and front legs. There is no need to let your pet suffer, a dental scale and polish can be carried out and dental extractions 80
