Hello and a very warm welcome to the May issue of the Whitby Advertiser, the number one choice for advertising in Whitby and the surrounding district. The long winter months are now well behind us and May is here. The Easter holidays saw great crowds descend on Whitby once again despite the unsettled weather, enjoying the town’s pretty harbourside and quaint streets with gift shops galore, not to mention a fantastic choice of fish and chip shops, cafes and restaurants. GO APE! AT DALBY FOREST Well what can I say?

My first impressions were the friendly, professional and kind staff, with a fun and caring approach. They even made me start looking forward to my daunting, death defying activity!

The routine of clipping and unclipping your carabiners instilled how safe you were and kept you focused and busy so that you were enjoying the now and not giving in to your fear to spoil all the fun! 6

The zip wire was the most amazing thing that I have ever done, even at my age! The exhilaration of gliding over the beautiful tree tops inhaling the wonderous smells of the forest certainly is a memory I will never forget. So come on, man up, seize the day And GO APE!!!

“Like a lot of slimmers, I had tried to lose weight so many times before by following numerous diets but they were never sustainable because I’d always get tired of restricting what I ate. I thought I was destined to struggle with my weight for the rest of my life, but when I came to Slimming World it was different. I never felt like I was on a diet. The eating plan encourages you to eat lots of tasty, filling foods like pasta, rice, potatoes and lean meat and fish, you are never hungry and no foods are banned so 30

there’s no deprivation. I couldn’t believe I’d found a way to lose weight without starving myself. In my first week I stepped on the scales to find I had lost 9lbs and I haven’t looked back. “Slimming World isn’t just about changing what you eat. Becoming more active is important too. Our Body Magic programme takes the threat out of activity by showing people, many of whom have unpleasant memories of being forced to take part in activity at school, how they can build activity into their daily routine without having to take up traditional forms of exercise like going to the gym or running. Everything counts from walking to gardening to washing the car. Having dropped from a size 24 to an 8 Misē has now decided to help others by taking over a local group to share her success and can’t wait to help you with your success story. Misē’s Slimming World group will be held at Whitby Rugby Club every Monday at 5:00pm and 7:00pm from 7th May. LIBRARY COMPETITION CELEBRATES LOCAL HISTORY

Whitby Library are running a photography competition throughout May called ‘Whitby’s Beautiful Buildings’, to celebrate Local History Month. It is open to all members of the library. If you are not a member already don’t worry, you can sign up when you submit your entry. There’s no fee involved, it’s completely free to join.

The competition begins on Tuesday 1 May and the deadline date is Thursday 31 May.

If you want to submit a photograph, please note that all photographs need to be no bigger than an A5 page (14 x 21cm), and must be mounted for display in the library. Unfortunately any submissions can not be returned.

COMMUNITY NOTICE

LOCAL PEOPLE ENCOURAGED TO LEARN MORE ABOUT HEALTH SERVICES

People living in or registered with a GP practice in Whitby and the surrounding area are encouraged to join a free network to learn more about local health services.

Local health body, NHS Hambleton, Richmondshire and Whitby Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) has a statutory responsibility to encourage patient and public involvement when buying new, or looking to change existing health services. It is important that local people have a say and are kept up-to-date as much as possible. In 2013, a membership of local people was created.

The CCG’s Health Engagement Network known as the ‘HEN’ helps to reach local communities and are the ‘go to’ resource for feedback on existing services and plans for the future. There are currently over 90 members across the Whitby and surrounding villages but the CCG wants more people to join and get more involved.

To ensure the CCG is fully representative, there are three non-voting members who sit on the Governing Body known as Health Engagement Network Representatives (HEN) Representatives. Doff Pollard represents the Whitby area and acts as a critical friend, liaising between the CCG and the public. Health Engagement Network Representative for Whitby and the surrounding area, Doff Pollard said:

“I got involved because I am interested in knowing about the development in the remodelling of the Whitby Hospital and how I can support and contribute to this. Since joining and becoming the HEN Representative for the area I have also been involved in looking at the way services for ‘end of life’ are delivered and how they might be changed and enhanced. I have been able to take up issues that have been raised with me and share the information I have received. “Over the coming months the development of the hospital in Whitby will continue to be a hot topic and being signed up to the HEN network will be one of the ways you can insure you are kept informed as far as possible.” 48

NHS Property Services (NHSPS) which owns the site has recently appointed BAM Construction to deliver the redevelopment of Whitby Hospital – a project led by the CCG.

Any resident, or those registered with a GP practice in the Whitby area can join the network for free. There is no cost or obligation and the level of involvement is optional ranging from receiving newsletters and the occasional survey to being invited to take part in focus groups looking at specific issues or services.

Linda Lloyd, CCG Vice Chair and Lead for Patient and Public Involvement said: “Overall our HEN is steadily growing across the three locations and I have been a member since the inception. I would not have applied for this Lay position with the CCG without the knowledge gathered over that period.

“Across the years we have endeavoured to meet with the network in various ways: at patient events, annual general meetings, surveys, engagement or consultation events and small group discussions. There is also the CCG newsletter, which is distributed via email or post to all the HEN members every month. It covers topics both local and on a wider scale. “Knowledge of the area, of the people, of the local niggles and quandaries have all helped me to put the patient and public view into the framework of the CCG.

“The CCG is grateful to those of our network that keep us informed with, what we call “soft intelligence”. All this helps to build a picture of the happenings from the patient side of events in their locality. We would love to see more local people join and get involved.”

So the exciting time has arrived, time to buy your first home and probably the most expensive thing you have every bought. All the more reason to ensure every thing is correct and the right decisions are made in order to the make the first home-buying experience a happy and successful one. BUDGETING The important thing to remember is be realistic, seek advice from your bank or mortgage adviser who can help ensure you don’t underestimate your monthly mortgage repayments. Don’t be afraid to shop around for a good mortgage deal! A mortgage adviser will approach many lenders in order to find the perfect mortgage for you. The estate agent will be able to point you in the direction of a reliable friendly advisor. FINDING THE RIGHT HOME AND MAKING AN OFFER Don’t panic buy! There are many factor to consider when buying a home, size, running costs, location, layout, garden size. View several properties which you feel meet your criteria and choose the one which works best for you. When making an offer consider any additional cost which you may incur including any additional works you may wish to carry out on the property. Don’t forget your budget, try not to get carried away with excitement whilst making offers as you may end up over spending. ADDITIONAL COSTS Remember that there are several unavoidable expenses to consider. Legal fees are to be payed to your solicitor who has carried out the conveyancing for you along with a survey which will have ben carried out by your mortgage lender. Thankfully the stamp duty threshold for first time buyers has been raised for first time buyers, this means that anyone buying their first home won’t be liable for stamp duty if the purchase price is below £300,000. 50

TIME SCALES Although you are in a good, chain free position and can move forward with your purchase quickly, it is important to remember that the conveyancing process can still take time. On average expect the process to take around 8-12 weeks, however this can be reduced if circumstances allow. It is also very difficult for a solicitor to confirm or suggest a date for completion until the process is well down the line. HELP AND ADVICE Don’t feel awkward asking questions, buying your first home is a massive step and no doubt your estate agent is empathetic of this. There is nothing wrong with picking up the phone to the agent to ask any questions, no matter how big or small. The agent will be more than happy to discuss any queries you how. Your solicitor is there to help, they are acting on your behalf after all. It is good practice to build a professional relationship with your solicitor where you are in regular correspondence in order to be kept updated with progress. WHO IS CARING FOR YOUR MUCH LOVED PET?

This month is Veterinary Nurse Awareness month! Veterinary nurses play an important role in the care of your pet and are a vital member of the veterinary team. They carry out technical work and are skilled in undertaking a range of diagnostic tests, medical treatments and minor surgical procedures, under veterinary surgeon direction. Veterinary nurses also advise on keeping pets healthy and in many practices run their own nursing consultations and out-patient checks. This article aims to give an insight into their responsibilities and the various nursing roles you may come across in practice. You may come across different types of veterinary nurse in your vet practice. They may wear a range of different uniforms. Qualified nurses will often wear a dark green uniform, while the student nurse uniform is usually white with green stripes. The veterinary nursing profession is currently moving towards full regulation, with all qualified veterinary nurses being required to be listed with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and able to use the title RVN (Registered Veterinary Nurse) after their name. Only RVNs can legally carry out certain procedures within practice Being a RVN means that the holderâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s name has been registered on the non-statutory Register for Veterinary Nurses, held by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. Their registration demonstrates to employers and the general public that they are keeping their skills up-to date and are accountable for their professional conduct. Some RVNs decide to undertake a further period of study specialising in certain areas such as anaesthesia, radiography or intensive care. This training, which normally takes a further two years, leads to a Diploma in Advanced Veterinary Nursing and successful recipients are entitled to use the post nominals Dip AVN (Small Animal) after the RVN title.

Some practices have nursing assistants to help qualified nursing team with their duties. This can include exercising and feeding your pet, cleaning the kennel, helping with handling and giving lots of TLC. Although they do not require a specific qualification to carry out these tasks, most practices enrol their staff in recognised courses leading to the Animal Nursing Assistant (ANA) or Veterinary Care Assistant (VCA) qualification. 96

Nurses are responsible for carrying out nursing care of in patients whilst working with the veterinary surgeon in charge of the case. Like nurses in NHS hospitals they undertake a wide range of tasks such as administering medication, wound management and monitoring intravenous fluids as well as looking after the needs of the patient.

Nurses are trained to in anaesthesia and theatre practice to assist the veterinary surgeon by monitoring the levels of patient anaesthesia throughout the operation, and preparing and managing the theatre room. They are trained to recognise different stages of anaesthesia and potential problems. RVNs can also legally undertake minor surgical procedures such as the suturing of wounds, repair of aural haematomas, as well as dental scaling and polishing following assessment and removal of any damaged teeth by the vet. Just like the Doctorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s surgery, the majority of veterinary practices now run nurse-led clinics at least two or three times a week if not on a daily basis. These will vary between practices, but common areas include weight management, dressing changes, post-operative checks and suture removal, puppy training and socialisation classes, microchipping, second vaccination and diabetic clinics.

Many laboratory tests are performed in-house by RVNs. Once the test is complete, the findings will be relayed to the veterinary surgeon in charge of the case, who will interpret them and discuss the results with you. Radiographs (x-rays) can be a crucial aid to the diagnosis of illness or injury and RVNs are trained to take and process x-rays as requested by the veterinary surgeon. Not to forget, nurses often have to take their turn at front of house, on reception and answering the phone. It is also often the job of the nursing team or head nurse to organise staff, produce rotas, do stock checks and order goods required on a daily basis. And of course, cleaning! Nurses are the back bone of making sure the practice is kept clean and tidy; they have to make sure that all staff are adhering to strict daily cleaning and sterilisation protocols.

And all of this has to be juggled in a high stress, unpredictable environment that can go from a steady morning of consultations to multiple emergency cases in a matter of minutes!
