Looking at the calendar, May gets off to a good start with the May Day Bank Holiday falling on the first day of the month, and then there is the long weekend at the end of the month with the Spring Bank Holiday on 29 May. We had some really lovely sunny days in April, so here’s hoping the spring weather will be nice this month so that we can enjoy barbecues, time down on the beach, family days out and some serious relaxation time! Maybe wishful thinking here, but you never know - fingers crossed! VOLUNTEERS WANTED AT THE CAPTAIN COOK MEMORIAL MUSEUM

There are many opportunities for volunteering at the Captain Cook Memorial Museum who are always looking for interested, new people to join their team. This might be a regular slot as a museum guide, education assistant, a holiday project, social media, photography, cataloguing in the library, a piece of research for the museum or even some maintenance or gardening! Whether youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve got a love of local history or want to play a part in conserving a site of vital local importance, the museum would love to discuss your interests and range of skills and should be able to find something to suit you. Volunteering at the museum will give you the opportunity to meet new people and work as part of a small friendly team.

WHITBY’S FAMILY FRIENDLY FESTIVAL IS BACK FOR A SECOND YEAR!

Whitby Rising Music Festival is back for it’s second year on Saturday July 22nd. Great news for everyone who missed it last year! After a successful first year held on Eskdale School Field, the event has now moved to a bigger site, Stripes Farm on Hawsker Lane; and this year you can camp on site overnight and get the full festival experience.

The musical line up is headlined once more by Alistair and his band with acts from near and far delivering a day packed full of great music.

This family friendly festival is organised by local singer songwriter Alistair Griffin who wants to bring great music to Whitby, a place where he went to school, and somewhere he regularly visits and a community he supports.

“Putting on a festival is a big task, but we’re ready to work hard to make it a success. But you do need everyone pulling for you, so we’re keen for everyone to get behind the festival in its early years to build it together.” “We’re after volunteers for marshalling and car park duty and definitely a clear up crew! In exchange for a few hours labour, you can get yourself a FREE ticket for the festival and we’ll even throw in a bacon sarnie or some beers.”

This year the festival has more of everything. More stuff to do, more things to eat and drink, more music to listen to and get involved with, more kids fun and much more room. So, now all you have to do is stagger to your tent with overnight camping on offer this year.

“There’s lots going on in Whitby in the summer, but nothing quite like this. It’s a chance to shine a light on Whitby for its talent, its character and its culture. As we look to grow the festival the community will always be at the heart of the event.”

There will be lots of entertainment to keep the young ones busy with bubble parties, climbing walls, face painting, bouncy castles, glitter art, 5 a side, mini discos, pirate tales and more yet to be announced. And lots for the adults too; including the very popular Prosecco Bar, a Whitby Rising Ale courtesy of our bar providers Whitby Brewery, henna tattoos, a karaoke tent, festival stalls, plus more announcements to come.

There will be ample supplies of festival food and drink, ice cream, sweets and treats, teas and coffees and plenty of fantastic live music to keep you going. The doors open at 11am this year. The Whitby Rising Cup will once more be up for grabs at a pre-festival Crazy Golf Tournament. There are a limited number of FREE tickets for 12 and Unders, so bring the family. Each year Whitby Rising will look to support a local cause, and this year the festival is raising money for Wet Wheels, a charity providing disabled people with the chance to access the sea in a fun, safe, stimulating and rewarding way using specially modified, fully accessible powerboats. FINDING THE BEST POSSIBLE ESTATE AGENT Now Easter has been and gone - we have reached that time of year when many start thinking about putting their property onto the market and we will receive many a phone call asking the same, solitary question: What are your fees for selling? Of course it is understandable that people would want an indication of what costs will be involved when selling their accommodation – but should this be the only question? The first step for any prospective seller is to find the right estate agent and this decision should be based on so much more than just price. As with most things in life the old saying applies - you get what you pay for. A cheap fee can often have a cheap service attached to it. If a property is not being marketed to its full potential, and therefore remains on the market for a long period of time, this can cost the vendor dearly in both time and money. So, here are some suggestions of questions you can ask in order to find the best possible agent for you:

SUN, VETS & SEASONAL ALLERGIES With summer on the horizon, you and your pets are finally coming out of hibernation to enjoy the longer days and warmer weather. Unfortunately, this time of year also brings with it a host of potential problems for pet owners to be aware of...

Allergies The main two allergies are food and environmental. If your pet gets itchy during spring or summer, they’re probably reacting to seasonal, environmental allergens. But if their symptoms continue year-round, it’s more likely that their sensitivity is to something in their diet. One exception to this is when seasonal allergies progress to chronic year-round allergies, which can happen over time if the condition is not managed.

In people, seasonal allergy symptoms usually involve the respiratory tract. In dogs and cats it more often takes the form of skin irritation. This is called allergic dermatitis. If your pet has allergies, their skin will become very itchy, causing excessively scratching. It is common that pets will rub their face along the carpet, chew at paws and use corners of furniture to itch on. They are trying to relieve the miserable itchiness by any means possible. As the excessive itch-scratch cycle continues, the skin becomes inflamed, causing areas of hair loss, open sores and scabbing. Imagine just how sore and irritating this must be! If any of these symptoms are familiar, please let us ease your little friend’s discomfort. We cannot cure allergies, but managing them prevents an inevitably escalating problem.

Fleas and ticks Most owners are unaware of how common they are and would be horrified to think that their ‘Lucky’ is playing host to fleas and ticks. It is not something that owner’s should be embarrassed about as all animals can easily catch them. It is estimated that 95% of domestic pets will have fleas and/or ticks at some point in their life. From May until October, fleas and ticks become 20 % and 80% and more active respectively. We would actively like to encourage owners to try and prevent parasite related problems as this is defiantly easier and more pleasant than cure. 95 % of fleas and their eggs, larvae and pupae live in the environment (your home!), not on your pet. These are difficult to eliminate. Ticks can transfer many unpleasant disease to your pet, including the well documented Lyme’s disease. Incorrect removal 90

of a tick can leave the head embedded in your pet, which can cause a nasty abscess.

Adders The Adder is the only venomous snake native to the UK. Adults are around 50-60cm long and are characterised by having a black/brown zigzag pattern along their back. They are most prevalent in the South of Britain and on the North Yorkshire Moors. Snakes generally only bite in self-defence, so normally bites occur when a snake is stepped on or disturbed by an inquisitive dog. Bites are more frequent in the warmer weather, when the snakes are more active. Bites result in swelling that is often dark coloured and can become severe depending on how the dog’s immune system reacts. You may be able to see 2 small puncture wounds. Bites most commonly occur on a dog’s legs or face. Your dog will show signs of significant pain. Other signs include pale gums, bruising, vomiting, diarrhoea, restlessness and lethargy. Eventually animals may collapse, have blood clotting problems, tremors or convulsions. Bites on or around the face can lead to swelling, which result in breathing difficulties.

Seek veterinary attention as soon as possible if you think your dog may have been bitten. The sooner treatment is received, the quicker and more likely it is that your dog will recover. Carry your dog if possible, or at least keep him on the lead, to try and reduce the spread of venom around his body. Bathe the wound in cold water to help control the swelling and keep your dog quiet as you transport him to the vets. Treatments for pain, swelling and shock and potentially anti-venom can be administered, after which most cases survive. But remember, prevention is better then cure; be vigilant and make sure your dog is under control when out and about on the moors.
