Well, another month has passed by quickly, and November is now with us! Hello and welcome to this new edition of the Whitby Advertiser, the number one choice for advertising in Whitby and the surrounding district. It seems like just yesterday when we were enjoying the long summer days and warm sunshine, and now another year is almost over. As we go to print, we are about to celebrate the last Goth Weekend of the year just before Halloween itself, and then Christmas will soon follow, with its with tinsel and sparkling decorations, frivolity, festive food & drink and many fun parties! EXCELLENCE AWAITS YOU AT THE BADGER HOUNDS Six years of hard work and determination by Andy and Jenny Trowsdale have seen the Badger Hounds in the pretty village of Hinderwell transformed and refurbished into the sort of Pub/ Restaurant that brings joy to the heart. A warm and welcoming atmosphere, aided by a wood-burning stove greets you; the Badger Hounds having been awarded a community ‘Pub is the Hub’ and a further ‘Certificate of Excellence’ from Trip Advisor. A large range of keg and craft beers is available, with Hobgoblin from the Wychwood brewery and a Premium Italian lager featuring. Larger than usual steaks, properly aged and locally sourced are at the heart of a comprehensive menu, with daily ‘specials’ changing regularly. Everything is freshly prepared in Andy’s 5* hygiene rated bright and modern kitchen, where his 20 year motto “Fresh is Best” is rigorously adhered to. Steak nights

are on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Fresh fish comes from Saltburn and Brotton Seafoods, with huge cod, salmon and garlic king prawns starring. Jenny looks after the bar, staff and general ‘front of house’ duties. Sunday lunches are extremely popular, having choices between beef, lamb, pork and turkey crown. Vegetables are always prepared from fresh produce. There is a range of homemade puddings if you have room for one, with sticky toffee pudding to die for! A large car park with delineated bays plus disabled parking makes for easy wheelchair access throughout the pub, including a disabled toilet. Just for a change, jazz lovers will appreciate a mid-monthly session normally held on Wednesday. TEDDIES FOR LOVING CARE
“Children may forgive and forget what you say or do, but will remember forever how you make them feel”. It has been identified that when children are first admitted to Accident & Emergency departments they are usually tearful, frightened, and in many cases in considerable pain. By giving them a Teddy Bear to focus on when they first arrive, the medical staff can check them over more efficiently, possibly even putting a bandage on Teddy as well, or using him as a ’model’ to point out what is wrong or is going to happen. The children are obviously delighted by them because they are given for them to keep, and hospitals think that Teddies for Loving Care is a brilliant idea and are keenly involved. Teddies are bought and distributed by members of the Masonic Province of Yorkshire North and East Ridings and so far they have donated over 32,000 teddies to hospitals’ A&E departments in our region.

All money raised is totally spent on buying bears in bulk. All time, materials, expenses, organization, storage and distribution costs are given free of charge. Nationwide and in the whole of Ireland over 2 million bears have been distributed to children in A&E departments over the last 15 years. GLASS SLIPPER BALL INVITES YOU TO HELP GREAT CAUSES A Charity Ball is to be held on Saturday 11th November 2017 at Whitby Spa Pavilion in aid of the Yorkshire Air Ambulance and The Hearing Dogs for the Deaf and the organisers would be extremely grateful for your help. If you are able to make a donation in form of a cheque, or a prize for the Silent Auction or the Raffle, it would be most gratefully appreciated. The Yorkshire Air Ambulance and the Hearing Dogs for the Deaf need the vital support from charity events such as this in order to keep and promote these services within this area. NORTH YORKSHIRE MOORS COASTAL CYCLE CHALLENGE REVIEW Well, I suppose it had to happen. After five events with wonderful sunny weather, this one turned out to be rather soggy! Despite this, spirits were high at the start and did not wane. There were 74 entries this year, a little down from 2016 and of these 12 didn’t start, probably because of the conditions and weather. Just two of the 62 starters only two retired, leaving 60 very satisfied completions, all within the six hours allotted time limit. Despite the poor conditions on the track there were no accidents, and once again the first aid kits remained unused. It is not a race but a personal challenge so all those completing won their own battle against the time and the elements. This year, we recorded the fastest time ever for the event, and from one of the youngest. Jenson Lawson, 15, from Whitby, who completed the course in 2 hours 42 minutes, a magnificent achievement. Well done, Jenson! With your ability and keenness, we hope that you 44
By Norman Scholes go on to greater events (but not better ones, of course!) Michael Knight, also of Whitby was just one minute behind and James Poulson of Hull was third in 2hrs 52 minutes. The cyclists were quite a sight to behold when they checked in, but smiles beamed through their blacked-up faces. No-one seemed to be in any distress - perhaps it was just sheer elation at getting back and the wonderful meal prepared by the catering team who cane together on the day. I am most happy to report that £500 was made for the village hall funds. My personal thanks go to all who unstintingly gave their help for the event. It would not be possible or such a success without their efforts at the checkpoints and at the village hall HQ. Many thanks too for the generous support of the Whitby Advertiser. BRICKS VERSUS CLICKS A growing number of Online Estate Agents have burst onto the scene offering to sell properties at rock-bottom prices. Adverts from these companies have filled day-time advert breaks and left people wondering – why would I pay more for a high street Estate Agent when online agents say they can sell my house for as little as £400? The popularity of Online Estate agents has not taken off as quickly as predicted and, in most areas of the country, they have had little impact on High Street Agents. This could be mainly down to the fact that there is much more to selling a house than placing basic details on a few property portals. So what are the differences between these 2 types of agent and who should people trust to handle their most important financial transaction. PERSONAL SERVICE High Street Agents- Allow the luxury of being able to walk into an office and get advice from an experienced member of staff in person. At Hendersons our office is open on weekends and until 7pm on week-days meaning we’re available to see our clients at times which work around their work schedules and busy lives. Online Agents– Many operate from nation-wide call centres, meaning customers will often converse over the phone with someone without local knowledge and face-to-face meetings are not an option. MARKETING High Street Agents- A good agent will pay a visit to measure rooms, draw a floorplan and take the most attractive photographs possible to ensure the accommodation is being marketing to its full potential and standing out from the crowd. Online Agents- Again, it varies. However, many request owners take their own photographs and floorplans are often none-existent. VIEWINGS High Street Agents – Will happily take care of viewings meaning that whether vendors are busy, on holiday or at work, viewings can take place. A member of staff with first-hand knowledge of the property can show potential buyers around and answer any questions they may have. 54

Online Agents – Different companies offer different packages but the majority arrange viewings but usually leave property owners to carry them out. VALUATIONS High Street Agents – Spend time carrying out research, looking over comparables and visiting homes to ensure that the right market price is set. Many potential sellers opt to have valuations carried out by several local agents before making a decision on which is best suited to them and their accommodation. Online Agents – Sometimes send out a representative, usually from from out of the area, but also often value using just online data. FEES Online agents will always beat High Street Agents hands-down when it comes to fees. An office, advertising on major portals, experienced staff able to effectively conduct viewings and carry out valuations, interactive touch screens, keeping a modern and evolving agency website running, LED window displays, newspaper advertising, professional photographs, and all the many other services a really good high street agent will offer, can not be done for a few hundreds pounds. Would an online agent offer value for money? A high street agent is not just trying to sell their vendor’s properties – but trying to sell them for the best possible price for the owner. This can be most easily and effectively achieved by an experienced negotiator. Also, bear in mind an online agent will likely ask for an up-front fee as opposed to the nosale-no-fee approach meaning they have been paid regardless of whether they manage to sell the property or not and regardless of what price. Anyone confused about what type of agent to use would be best advised, as a starting point, to look online at the quality of marketing different agents offer. Also, researching into the services they offer, as well as the level of market exposure, could set you well on the way to deciding between bricks and clicks.

SEASONAL PET ANXIETY ISSUES
In the next few months, Halloween, Bonfire night, Christmas and New Year will bring us all out to celebrate. While these times can be fun, they can be a huge source of worry and anxiety for many pets and owners alike. Many dogs show signs of fear on varying levels when they hear fireworks. Many pets even demonstrate significantly raised levels of stress when extra social events, such as having family round or a dinner party, takes place in their home. Firework and noise related phobia are treatable conditions and animals don’t have to suffer such misery every year. Simple things can be done throughout the year to help prepare as well as things to do at the time. On celebration nights, it’s best to close the curtains, windows and turn up the TV. This blocks out any scary flashes of light and reduce the noise level of fireworks. Remain relaxed and happy, as your pet will pick up on any odd behaviour. Reward calm behaviour with dog treats or playing with toys. Make a safe den for your dog to retreat to if he or she feels scared. Alternatively, let your dog take refuge under furniture and include an old, unwashed piece of clothing like a woolly jumper so that your dog can smell your scent and feel comfortable. But if he or she comes to you for comfort, make sure that you give reassurance. Don’t withdraw from them. DO NOT take your dog to a firework display. Excessive yawning and panting can be more discreet indicators that your dog is stressed. DO NOT leave your dog on his own or in a separate room from you or try and tempt him out if he does retreat, as this may cause more stress. DO NOTchange routines more than necessary, as this can be stressful. DO NOT Tell your little friend off or try to force them to face their fears which will make them more distressed. Remember that it is natural for a dog to be scared of loud noises and unfamiliar sights and sounds. Acclimatizing your dog to noises prior to the big night is a worthwhile task. Try playing a firework sound CD or video on ‘YouTube’ at a low level to let your dog get used to the sound. There are many noise CDs on the market which allow you to introduce your dog to a variety of potentially disturbing noises in a controlled manner. However, 92

if your pet is severely noise phobic, we suggest that you give us a call and seek help from an experienced animal behaviourist as sound CDs may make things worse As already mentioned, you can help your canine family member by preparing a ‘safe haven’ or a ‘dog den. Try to do this a few weeks in advance so that your dog learns it is a safe place. Plugging in a pheromone support / natural anxiety reduction diffuser or using an equivalent spray in the area of the den will increase the security felt by your dog. Walk your dog before dusk before any fireworks will start. It may be some time before it’s safe to venture outside again for your dog to relieve himself. Keep a firm grip on the lead as they can be frightened by people in costumes such as ‘trick & treaters’and could potentially react aggressively through fear. As the nights draw in, remember that walking our dogs in the dark is a potential hazard in itself. It is really important to ensure that others can see them. As well as cars, don’t underestimate the damage that a cyclist or even a runner can do to your dog. Use reflective collars, leads, tags, dog jackets, small LED lights to clip onto leads and collars and even battery powered illuminated collars which are usually USB chargeable, and have multiple lighting options. Preparation is key to overcoming this common and very upsetting problem. Please feel free to ring the team at The Beck Veterinary Practice for help and advice.
