Hello and welcome to the October edition of the Whitby Advertiser, the number one choice for advertising in Whitby and the surrounding district. Whether you are a local resident, business owner, visitor or holidaymaker I hope that you enjoy browsing our magazine this month. The summer months are now behind us and the weather certainly has quite an autumnal feel about it. As I write this editorial, Whitby has just suffered the remnants of the Atlantic sub-tropical Storm Helene quickly followed by the UK’s first two official storms of the 2018-19 season, Storm Ali and Bronagh, each bringing very strong winds and squally showers on consecutive days. Are we going to see another winter of many storms? The Met Office has already issued an alphabetical list of names for them including Dierdre, Freya, Max and Tristan. Will we reach Wyn, the final name on the list before spring next year? Hmmm… This month, our magazine reflects the change in seasons too with local hotels and restaurants beginning to focus on the upcoming festive season and advertise their festive parties and lunches have you booked your Christmas office or works party yet? If not, just browse through the following pages and you could soon be sorted!

When weather permits, there is a large outside seating area to enjoy the views whilst you eat and/ or drink. In the winter months, it is a different kind of beauty sitting indoors in front of one of the log fires watching the waves break over the piers. The pub has a good selection of real ales, lagers and currently over 50 gins to choose from as well as a good selection of house wines and specialty wines.

While the pub itself does not have accommodation, it has a sister pub the Captain Cook Inn which is only a few minutes’ walk back through the village where there is ample free parking for residents. The Captain Cook Inn boasts nine bedrooms all ensuite, three of which are dog friendly. There is even a four-poster bed for that special occasion.

A: An asset gifted to a family member is exempt from Inheritance Tax (IHT), as long as the donor lives for at least seven years after making the gift. Gifting your property can seem like a straightforward solution to avoiding a large IHT bill. However, below are some important points to consider before making your decision:

• The property owners are Trustees; they do not personally own your house so if a Trustee is declared bankrupt or divorces, the property will not be taken into account. • After your death, your house will already be in the names of your Trustees which may simplify the procedure for selling or transferring it to beneficiaries. • If you have a family member (other than your spouse) living in your house with you, the Trust could enable them to remain, even if you go into a care home. Independent Legal advice should always be taken before you do any lifetime estate planning. A: Instead of transferring the family home outright, you might considering transferring it into an Asset Protection Trust. This kind of Trust offers you the most protection and provides you with certain rights and benefits during your life time: • You have the right to live in your house, move to a new property, receive income from the proceeds of a sale and control over who, ultimately, benefits when the trust ceases. 35

HENDERSONS & KARIN GO SKY HIGH FOR ST CATHERINE’S CHARITY

A huge thank you to everyone that helped support Karin Henderson (my mum) in her recent charity fundraising event for St Catherine’s Hospice. For those of you who don’t know, Karin recently completed a dare devil experience, doing a wing walk. Karin hoped to raise £1,500 and with your help we managed to exceed this raising £1,555! It was a great day with amazing blue skies when Karin climbed aboard the wing of a Tiger Moth and got strapped in for the ride of her life. After 15 minutes in the air the plane can down to land and Karin was smiling from ear to ear! She loved it that much that she would like to do it all again next year along with a abseil down the Emirates Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth, so watch this space for some more charity adventures.

Hospice that each year needs around £5.5 million to deliver its sixteen services both in the Hospice and in the home across the 1600 square mile area its serve. They work with over 3000 patients, families and carers each year and rely on 70% of all funding to come from voluntary donations, which means individuals and businesses such as Karin and Hendersons help continue to provide patient care free of charge. CAN YOU HELP THE WHITBY DEFIBRILLATOR PROJECT?

Whitby is woefully unprepared to deal with cardiac arrest situations. At present there are only 3 defibrillator machines available 24/7. Yorkshire Ambulance Service state that: “Sudden cardiac failure is the leading cause of premature death in the UK, but many lives can be saved with immediate treatment. The quicker defibrillation can be given the greater the chances of successful resuscitation are.” Whitby Lions are concerned about this situation, and of the number of incidents in the past when a number of people have died who may have been saved if a defibrillator was both visible and accessible in the locality. They acknowledge that the cost of installing and maintaining a network of such defibrillators is a small price to pay if it meant saving just one person’s life, and that local councils and the NHS don’t have the provision for such expenditure. Joining Forces The Whitby Cruising Association met with members of the Street Angels and Whitby Lions with the intention of raising funds to provide initially, a network of ten additional 24 hour defibrillator units strategically sited across the town. The Lions have agreed to lead on the project and look after the fund and they have also pledged some of the proceeds of their recent Beer Festival to the cause. Fund Raising With each unit costing around £1500, the overall cost of the project will be between £15,000 and £17,000. The Whitby Cruising Association, the Whitby Boating Association, the Street Angels, Whitby Town Council and Whitby and District Cardiac Support Group (Heartbeat) are organising several money raising ventures and are actively seeking sponsorship. Several generous donations have already been received. Scarborough Borough Council are also backing the campaign by raising awareness of the defibrillator appeal on its social media channels to encourage more donations as well as donating themselves. WCA have provided a cheque for £1300 to go into the fund, which is being overseen by Whitby Lions so that beneficial financial arrangements can be put in place. The Lions have also pledged £1300. Whitby Boat Owners have pledged £600 and SBC £1500. 46

Whitby Rugby Club intends to provide a further unit and most recently the ‘Yellow Boats’ also wish to help us. Angela Goodberry is holding a Quiz Night for November 28th at the Conservative Club where funds raised should go a long way to providing another unit. Other organisations have been contacted for their help and support, and replies are awaited. By working together far more is possible than each organisation doing their own thing. Defibrillator Sites The ten defibrillators will be placed strategically and will be mounted in a key-coded box on an external wall. By ringing 999, people will find out the location of the nearest unit as well as the code to open the box. Once attached to the person, the machine will decide whether to administer a life-saving shock. They can be used by anyone. Currently, 24 hour defibrillators in the town can be found outside Spring Vale Surgery, Monk’s Haven Café and on the Museum wall in Pannett Park. How You Can Help In order to maintain the defibrillators in working order, we will need to replace the batteries and pads every four years. To cover this relatively small but ongoing annual cost, we need organisations, small businesses or individuals to support our special maintenance fund. It is also hoped to expand the proposed network even further throughout Whitby. Please help us provide and maintain this life-saving network for the people of Whitby and visitors to our town. You are welcome to contribute directly or by organising a fund raiser on our behalf - Initial contact should be made with the Whitby Lions. HOW DO I KNOW IF MY DOG IS IN PAIN? Because dogs can’t speak, they often suffer in silence. It can be difficult to know how your dog is feeling, unless they are jumping for joy or howling in pain. Sometimes, when an illness or an injury begins, there may not be any obvious symptoms. This can mean it goes undetected for a long time, potentially causing numerous health and mental problems for your pet. And of course, they will be living with some degree of pain and discomfort. Here are the key signs to look out for when trying to determine if your dog is experiencing pain. We all know it’s usual for dogs to lick themselves. But if it becomes an obsessive behaviour it could be a sign that something’s wrong. If your pet is licking their paws constantly, it’s likely they’re trying to soothe themselves. When a dog is hurt, its first instinct is often to clean and care for the wound by licking it. Wounds are obvious, but sometimes the pain can be internal. If you notice your dog spending a lot of time licking a certain area, your pet may be in pain. Keep an eye on the area they’re paying attention to. If a dog is hot or has undertaken strenuous exercise, heavy panting is nothing to worry about. However, a dog that is panting heavily even though they have not been exercising is a warning sign of a problem. Also, breathing that is more shallow means that it could be painful to take a breath. Just like humans, dogs experience a lack of appetite when they’re feeling unwell. This could be for various reasons, from nausea to arthritis induced pain. A noticeable difference in the amount of water they’re drinking is a common symptom of many diseases. Difficulty eating, particularly dried food or firm chews, can indicate dental pain. If you notice any kind of lack of appetite in your pet, it’s crucial that you make a trip to your local vets as soon as possible, as this could be a symptom of several dangerous illnesses. A change in your pet’s behaviour can be an obvious sign of discomfort or pain. Dogs might stop running to greet you, try to avoid contact, or even become aggressive. If your dog is hiding away or appears to be unusually antisocial, it could be an indication that they’re in pain. Smaller dogs may stop wanting to be picked up, or cry out when you try to do so. 78

If this change in behaviour is sudden, assume that pain is the cause. Don’t take offence if your dog is hiding from you or becomes aggressive. Just be cautious and gentle when approaching them to check for pain, and book a vet appointment straight away. Dogs that are experiencing pain also tend to be more vocal. A usually quiet dog may start yelping, growling, snarling, and even howling repose to pain. Restlessness is an indicator of pain in dogs. If your dog is pacing, having difficulty getting comfortable, or is sleeping a lot less, there could be an underlying issue. Don’t assume trembling or shaking is just your dog feeling cold or, indeed, getting old. Both can be a sign of pain, or a symptom of something more serious such as poisoning, pancreatitis or kidney disease. For example, dogs who have eaten chocolate or mouldy compost often suffer severe muscle tremors. Another straightforward sign of pain is limping. If your dog is reluctant to walk, is slow to get up from a lying down position or is having trouble climbing stairs, this could be a sign of aging and arthritis. However, if your pet is limping on a particular paw, this could be injury related. Swelling of the paws, legs, and face is a sign of pain that could be caused by inflammation, infection or even cancer. When in pain, some dogs have a very rigid and hunched stance while others assume the ‘prayer’ posture with their front legs on the ground and their bottom in the air. Dogs often take the ‘prayer’ position when they are suffering from abdominal pain as it allows them to stretch this area. If you can spot signals of pain in your pet early on, it will greatly help your pet’s discomfort. If you can get your pet to the vets to start treatment, you have a much better chance of curing any pain in your dog. If your pet is aging, you can certainly keep your dog comfortable in its later years. Sadly, too many people just put problems with their geriatric pet down to aging, and do not consider helping maintain their quality of life by managing any pain or discomfort. Please do not attempt to treat your dog’s pain yourself. Many human medications, and those prescribed for other pets, can be very dangerous for dogs.
