for advertising in Whitby and the surrounding district. I hope that you will enjoy this new edition of our magazine, whether you are a local resident or business owner, or a visitor or holidaymaker to the area. As I write this, the school holidays are coming to an end and once again it has been a fantastic summer in our wonderful town with the prolonged heatwave bringing ever more visitors to the seaside as they seek some respite from the sweltering cities and towns. Reports in the national press did say that the heatwave raised sea temperatures in CALL US parts of England to higher than some of those in California, but I don’t think that applied to the chilly North Sea that laps our shores here in Whitby! STANDING PROUD IN STAITHES - THE CAPTAIN COOK INN!

The first pub you come to when entering the village of Staithes is the prominent ‘Captain Cook Inn’. Standing proudly at the top of the bank 10 mins walk from the harbour, the Captain Cook is now being run by an extremely hard-working couple Clare and Heath. They have transformed virtually everything and now the Inn has 9 beautifully appointed bedrooms, all en-suite and with TV and tea/coffee making equipment. Five rooms are doubles and four are ‘family’. The views are really something else, especially from the ‘honeymoon’ suite, which has a four-poster bed. Three of the rooms are ‘dog friendly’ so you can take Fido with you! There is ample parking and free Wi-Fi. A feature of the Captain Cook is that it has its very own cask conditioned dark beer called ‘Navigator’ especially brewed for them by the N.Yorks Brewery, indeed the Captain Cook Inn was recently given

a prestigious CAMRA award. There is also a wide range of gins, many distilled locally

As to food there is a comprehensive menu plus a ‘Specials’ board. Food may be taken in a separate dog-free dining room or in one of the bars’ alcoves. Gluten free, vegetarian or vegan options are catered for. There is a good wine list and dining al-fresco in the extensive beer garden is great in warm weather! Sunday lunches are served all year round and take-away food is also available.

Live music is extremely popular and this month features the ‘Snakerattlers’, the ‘Shakin’ Nightmares’ and the ‘Gurly Wurleys’ on the 28/9th September. Come early! So why not experience a great lunchtime or evening visit to the Captain Cook Inn – you won’t regret it!

YOUNG PEOPLE GIVEN EMPLOYMENT BOOST

Unemployed young people in the local area are being given the opportunity gain employment in the travel and tourism sector through a new traineeship programme launched by a leading youth charity. YHA (England and Wales) is offering 18 – 24-year-olds the opportunity to undertake a traineeship at Whitby youth hostel which, it is hoped, will enable them to gain paid employment. No qualifications are needed, just energy, enthusiasm and commitment. The youth hosteling charity is also offering travel costs of up to £15 a day to help ensure the opportunity is available to all young people. YHA has partnered with Qube Learning, an Ofsted Grade 2 training provider that specialises in vocational courses, short courses and e-learning, to deliver the traineeships which are designed to get young people work or apprenticeship ready. Young people who are ready to work, can undertake an eight to 12-week traineeship at one of 25 youth hostels throughout England and Wales, gaining front and back of house experience as well as customer service training.

As part of the traineeship, they’ll be given training at the youth hostels and also have access to online learning modules relating to health and safety, safeguarding and food hygiene. Everyone who completes a traineeship programme with YHA will be given a reference, certificate and exit interview, paving the way for them to gain employment and kick-start a career. The new YHA traineeships builds on YHA’s long running successful volunteering programme for 16 – 24-year-olds which has seen young volunteer numbers grow to 25% of all active volunteers at the charity over the past five years. James Blake, Chief Executive of YHA (England and Wales), explained “Our new traineeship programme takes volunteering for YHA to a new level, enabling unemployed young people to gain the vital skills and experience they need on their CV to get that all important paid job. “Transforming the lives of young people has been YHA’s purpose for more than 85 years and I am delighted that, through partnering with Qube Learning, we are able to reach even more 16 – 24-year-olds and enable them to broaden their horizons.” To apply to gain work experience or for a traineeship with YHA, visit https://volunteer.yha.org.uk/event/ TraineeshipsWorkExperience

WHITBY FILM SOCIETY PROVIDE CINEMA FOR ALL

Whitby Film Society’s new season of contemporary films from world cinema is set to begin in September, showing a total of 15 films until April 2019. Building on the success of the previous season, they will be showing an exciting, interesting and challenging series of films showcasing the best of award-winning contemporary world cinema.

The season starts with Oscar Nominee Toni Erdmann on 11th September, a German comedy-drama which finds excruciating humour and great pathos in a surreal collision between father and daughter. This will be followed by many award-winning films from Germany, Russia, Chile, America, Japan, Israel, Australia and France, as well as several Englishlanguage films including Armando Iannucci’s satire Death of Stalin and Funny Cow starring Maxine Peake.

NEUTERING YOUR DOG OR CAT Neutering your dog or cat is a highly important and often under-valued part of being a responsible owner. DOGS. Spaying your bitch can help to prevent your female dog from having many serious health problems. The two which we see all too often in practice are womb infections and breast cancer. Breast cancer is particularly dangerous, resulting in death for about 50% of canine cases. Both will make your dog feel very poorly and cost lots to treat. The most effective way to provide this protection is to ensure your dog is spayed either before or after her first season. In male dogs, neutering helps to prevents testicular cancer, another serious canine disease. The right age to spay or castrate your dog varies by breed and development; discuss getting your pet neutered at their first puppy vaccinations so you can formulate a plan. But just because you’ve not neutered your adult dog don’t think it’s too late. Give the surgery a call and we’ll discuss the procedure with you whatever you dog’s age. Neutering saves you money in the long run too. The cost of caring for a litter of puppies or handling the potential medical consequences of not neutering is many times that of a neutering procedure. From about six months of age, un-spayed females go into heat for two to three weeks at a time, usually twice a year. This period of time can bring about a number of troublesome behaviours such as howling, whimpering, being unsettled, spotting blood and phantom pregnancies. It will also attract the attention of every un-neutered male within smelling distance. It is typically 3-4 months after the last season when it is safest to neuter your bitch as the womb will be at its lowest vascularity. An un-neutered dog is more likely to display a number of problem behaviours in an effort to find a mate. He’ll want to roam, which can mean running away and generally unruly behaviour. Un-neutered dogs are also more likely to display aggressive behaviours as they mature. CATS. As your cat reaches sexual maturity between four to six months old, they could potentially have kittens whilst they are still kittens themselves! 78

Therefore, you’ll need to start thinking about cat neutering early. Just like dogs, neutering felines means that your cat will avoid any unplanned pregnancies and help protect them from certain diseases, including breast cancer and uterine infections. Neutering your cat will help curb the naughty behaviour that comes with sexual maturity, such as marking territory. Neutered cats are less likely to stray from home, which protects them from being involved in road traffic accidents and fighting with other cats. This also means a reduced risk of contracting certain diseases, including feline leukaemia and feline Aids. Your pet may become more affectionate. Female cats in particular often become gentler. We take extra special care of every single pet that comes into our surgery to be neutered. They will receive the highest standards of vet and nurse attention throughout their time with us, as well as high level pain relief and lots of TLC. Castration and spaying are both day procedures but we like to see all out patients back for a post op check after two days. Your pet will require some special home care for 10-12 days including lead exercise, for dogs, cats being kept in with a litter tray, use of a buster collar or body suit and keeping a careful eye on the wound. We will provide notes so do not worry about remembering everything. The decision to neuter your pet is one of the most important choices you will make as an owner.
