Hello and welcome to the September issue of the Whitby Advertiser, the popular local magazine regarded as the number one choice for advertising in Whitby and the surrounding district. I hope that you will enjoy this new edition of the Whitby Advertiser, whether you are a local resident or Stephen Ault business owner, or a visitor or holidaymaker to the area. As I write this, the school holidays are coming to an end and once again it has been a fantastic summer in our wonderful town. The weather has been a rather mixed bag at times, with just a short heatwave back in June being the highlight. Since then, we certainly have seen plenty of rain here on the East coast! The weather was more settled for the Regatta weekend that has just ended, and for most of Whitby Folk Week too, but we could have done with a little more sunshine at times! We have been busy at the Whitby Advertiser over the summer months and have been pleased to welcome many new advertisers to join the great range of advertisers who support our magazine. We have increased the number of copies available on our dedicated stand at the front of the Whitby Co-op, so visitors to the store can pick up a copy when they pop in for lunch or newspaper, or to do their weekly shop. In August, 3,000 copies were picked up instore and we are grateful to the store manager Dennis Gilroy for accommodating our stand in his busy store.

This month, our magazine boasts 96 pages, and within you can find adverts for businesses both new and long established, interesting editorials from our advertisers, and of course our ever-popular prize crossword which is sponsored by Nick Henderson of Hendersons Sales and Lettings on Flowergate who are themselves having a busy summer too breaking all sales and lettings records. WHITBY FILM SOCIETY PROVIDE CINEMA FOR ALL

Whitby Film Society’s new season of contemporary films from world cinema is set to begin in September, showing a total of 15 films until March 2018. Building on the success of the previous season, they will be showing an exciting, interesting and challenging series of films from many different countries, starting with The Eagle Huntress on 14th September, a documentary following Aisholpan, a young girl in the remote Altai mountains of Mongolia as she trains to become the first female in twelve generations of her Kazakh family to become an eagle huntress. While many Kazakh eagle hunters vehemently reject the idea of any female taking part in their ancient tradition, Aisholpan is supported by her family to maintain the tradition. Ultimately this is an uplifting documentary about a young girl’s desire to succeed in a very challenging environment.

This will be followed by films from Chile, Sweden, Britain, France, New Zealand, Spain, America, Iran, Estonia and Romania, showcasing the best of award-winning contemporary world cinema.

Nigel Staton, Chair of the Film Society said, “We are very excited at the number, range and quality of films we are showing this season on new equipment which we successfully gained through funding from the British Film Institute. We know this will vastly improve the whole cinematic experience for our keen audience.” All films will be shown at Whitby Coliseum Centre on Thursday evenings at 7.45p.m. Programmes are available at the Coliseum and many outlets in the town and the surrounding area.

VOLUNTEERS WANTED AT WHITBY LIBRARY Looking for a new and exciting opportunity..? Look no further!

There are a number of spaces available for multi-skilled, customer friendly people to assist at Whitby Library. The volunteer management committee are keen to recruit new staff members to help them maintain present opening hours.

There are a number of day to day tasks involved including helping customers chose books, shelving and general tidying, organising activities, using the library systems and assisting with I.T. access. Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be part of a friendly team working in a welcoming community space.

STRUGGLING TO GET A FOOT ONTO THE PROPERTY LADDER?

A few years ago, when the country was wallowing in recession, first time buyers became about as extinct as the dinosaurs! Preparing to buy your first home could mean paying a fortune in rent, whilst trying to save up a large deposit, and playing catchup with steadily rising house prices. Not easy! Thankfully the situation is now looking a lot brighter for people looking to purchase for the first time, and a range of Government Schemes now mean that potential buyers can do so with as little as a 5% deposit. Interest rates on high loan-to-value mortgages have fallen, making mortgage repayments more affordable and leaving more money for people to repay capital. There has also been high competition among lenders, resulting in increasingly attractive deals. With the gap between the cost of paying mortgage interest and renting growing increasingly wider – now is the time to buy. Help-to-buy schemes have helped to kick start the mortgage market. The ‘Help to buy ISA’ allows prospective first time buyers to have their savings boosted, by the government, by 25%. The maximum bonus you can receive is £3,000. The ‘Help to Buy Equity Loan’ is a ‘leg up’ for those looking to buy a newly built property. The government will lend the buyer 20% of the cost of your newly built home, so only 5% cash deposit and a 75% mortgage are needed to make up the rest. BORROW – AND, OF COURSE, PAY IT BACK It may seem like madness but being a good saver, and never borrowing, does nothing for your credit score. Your credit rating is, obviously, very important when applying for mortgage finance so getting a credit card and keeping up with the payments is a good idea. Also checking your credit score on a website like ‘Experian’ around 6 months before you start house-hunting is advisable (this gives you time to make sure any inaccuracies on the file are corrected) GET ON THE ELECTORAL REGISTER If you do not have a permanent address registered, and therefore the ability to vote, this can shave 46

valuable points off your credit score. Move around a lot? Registering at your most permanent base (or even at your parent’s address) is the best advice here. FIND OUT HOW MUCH YOU CAN BORROW The time to do this is before you begin searching for a property so as to not over-stretch yourself. Online mortgage calculators can give you a very rough idea of what you may be able to lend, but speaking with a mortgage advisor will result in having a very clear picture of what you maybe able to borrow based on your savings and income. Being able to boast that you have mortgage finance ‘Agreed in Principle’, when you make your first offer, will make your bid all the more attractive to the vendor. FACTOR IN ADDITIONAL COSTS This may be stating the obvious but – it costs a lot of money to move house! So, as well as the sale price (and the cost of an Ikea shopping spree!) don’t forget about solicitor’s fees, a survey and stamp duty (payable on all primary homes over £125,000) We know that buying your first home can be incredibly daunting and it will likely be the biggest investment you have ever made. But nothing beats the feeling of collecting the keys and spending that first night under a roof that is officially yours. DON’T LET YOUR PET PILE ON THE POUNDS

Summer is sadly drawing to a close. For most of us, this usually means the comfort food consumption goes up and our activity levels taper down. This also applies to the nations pets. And with a recent national study showing that one in three of dogs and cats in the UK are now clinically obese, responsible pet owners should make sure they are managing their pet’s waistline as well as their own.

People often over complicate weight management. But in reality, it is simple. If the fuel/calories you put into your pet outweighs the energy expenditure through daily activities and exercise, they will gain weight! Excessive weight gain will lead to Obesity. This can be defined as an excess of body fat that is enough to impair health, welfare and quality of life. Simple checks to see if your dog is overweight:

• You should be able to see and feel the outline of your dog’s ribs without excess fat covering.

• You should be able to see and feel your dog’s waist and it should be clearly visible when viewed from above.

• Your dog’s belly should be tucked up when viewed from the side. Simple checks to see if your dog is overweight:

• You should be able to see and feel your cats ribs, spine and hip bones. • Your cats waist should be clearly visible when viewed from above.

• Your cats belly shouldn’t be sagging underneath, there should only be a small amount of belly fat. If your dog or cat does not pass these checks, or if you are in any doubt, give us a call or pop in. Our friendly team will be more then happy to give weight and feeding advise. Why does it matter if my pet is overweight?

We believe obesity is a serious welfare issue in pets because it can cause suffering and can be extremely disabling. It’s also likely to affect your pet’s ability to perform natural behaviours including exercise and grooming, which can have negative psychological impacts too. Pet obesity also causes serious health problems, and makes existing problems worse, which can reduce the length and quality of your pet’s life. 86

Here are a few guidelines on feeding your pet:

A dog’s nutritional requirements depends on many factors including his activity level, age, any medical conditions and temperament. Therefore, it is important to choose a diet that fits their specific health and nutritional requirements rather than simple his breed. If in doubt ask us for advice.

Always Choose a high-quality food and look at the recommendations on the label. Most high-quality dog foods recommend approximately 1-1/2 cups per 10kg of body weight per day for smaller breeds, since they require 15-25% more calories per pound than larger breeds. Large and giant breeds are more often fed 1 cup per 10kg. However, never guess! Get out your kitchen scales and weight the food,. If your pet needs to lose or even gain weight, the volumes must be adjusted accordingly. Also, if activity levels change dramatically due to injury, illness or even holidays, feeding must be adjusted accordingly. If you like to give your pet a treat, make sure you accout for this out of the daily allowance.

Feeding guidelines pertain the total daily amount to be fed. Feeding multiple meals is advisable, so divide the daily amount accordingly. How can I stop my dog from rushing his food at meal times?

Dogs that gulp their food down too quickly tend to take in large amounts of air whilst eating which can cause stomach and digestive system upset. This can be avoided by placing a large object such a ball in the bowl to encourage him to take smaller bites, or there are some “slow-feeding bowls” available that have built-in obstructions within the bowl. If you have more than one pet, feed them separately to reduce competition for food.

How should I go about introducing a different food to my dog’s diet? Your dog will need to be introduced to the new food gradually as the number and type of bacteria in the intestines, which assist in digestion, can be changed and their ability to digest the food may be affected. Try and make any transition as smooth as possible. Start by mixing the new food with your usual brand, before gradually increasing the proportion over seven to ten days until your dog is only eating the new food. The amount of new food should be decreased if the dog shows any signs of gastrointestinal upset.

MAKING TAX DIGITAL - UPDATE

Readers of this magazine will recall that I wrote about some proposals of Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) to introduce new methods of reporting tax affairs for those who have to complete a self assessment tax return (SA) called Making Tax Digital (MTD). This would have meant that all taxpayers under SA would have to report every 3 months to HMRC with a final balancing report every financial year, increasing their already heavy tax compliance load. When the General Election was called the government had to pass the Finance Bill in a hurry and many proposals were dropped in what is called the ‘wash up’, including the legislation for MTD. The Paymaster General Mel Stride has now confirmed that Making Tax Digital has now been stripped back to cover only VAT, and the requirement to update HMRC quarterly will only start from April

2019. Many VAT registered traders do this already. Unincorporated small businesses, i.e. sole traders under the VAT threshold, will not be asked to keep digital records, or report quarterly until at least 2020. This is good news. Hopefully, after the trial runs prove to be a waste of public money, the whole idea will be dropped. My clients, and everyone else, can breathe again-at least for a bit longer.
