P
orters Park Golf Club dates back to 1899 when it became one of the first golf courses on the north side of London. At this time, the golf club was founded in the grounds of the local ‘Porters’ mansion. Today the only remaining evidence of Porters mansion is an underground ice house located near the third fairway.
The classic parkland golf course’s early design was heavily influenced by John Henry ‘JH’ Taylor one of the great golf course architects, and Charles Kenneth Cotton who went on to become one of the UK’s most distinguished post-war golf course architects. Picturesque, tree-lined fairways using the natural contours of the land, magnificent greens and a brook meandering through several holes are features of today’s Porters Park golf course which has hosted Open Championship Qualifying event on six occasions. A true test of golf where accuracy and course management are essential ingredients for an enjoyable round, the Par 70 golf course which measures 6,529 yards from the championship tees is idyllically set in tranquil Hertfordshire countryside, meandering through the surrounding mature woodlands and fields.
The home of excellence… The clubhouse at Porters Park was damaged by fire in 1954 with much of the original structure having to be rebuilt. A large extension of the clubhouse facilities was completed in 1990 enhancing the Club’s facilities for members and guests alike, whilst offering spectacular views across the course from the lounge and, restaurant and bar areas. Today, the clubhouse combines tradition and modern ambience. During refurbishments and upgrades, the Club is careful to retain the clubhouse’s character that has been enjoyed by so many through the years. Whilst, visitors have full use of the facilities, shower and changing amenities. Porters Park’s superbly-appointed, Professional’s shop is well-stocked with equipment, shoes and the latest golfing attire from some of the game’s leading manufacturers. The venue is also an official FootJoy fitting centre – one of only 100 in the country. The Club’s catering team provides imaginative cuisine as well as traditional favourites all of which can be served in the Club’s superbly-appointed and spacious dining room which opens on to a terrace with spectacular views across the golf course. The dining room seats 120 diners for lunches and evening meals as well as more formal occasions. Porters Park Golf Club is renowned in Hertfordshire for being the perfect conference venue for corporates, as well as a wonderful wedding venue which has been enjoyed by many brides who have been catered for by experienced staff with an eye for detail.
Inspiring and playable throughout the year, the Porters Park course is built on a base of loam clay, sand and gravel making it a really well draining golf course – temporary greens are never used and the course is rarely closed.
Warm & welcoming…
The Club’s practice and warm up facilities are second to none and just a short stroll from the clubhouse and locker rooms. These include a practice putting green which is a true representation of the greens on the course, practice nets and a short-game and bunker practice area.
A round of golf at the award-winning Porters Park Golf Club is a very enjoyable experience with the golf course featuring prominently in the UK’s Top 100 Golf Course guide.
The practice facilities are complemented by a further two large driving and long-game practice areas which lie between the 9th and 11th hole and are used extensively by the Club’s team of professionals for lessons and tuition.
