A regular host of regional, county and national events, South Cliff was the joint hosts of the English Amateur Championships in 2016.

Formed in the early 1900s, distinguished golfers to play the course and pass judgement in its early days include legendary golf course architects, Harry Vardon, James Braid and J H Taylor and 1907 Open Champion, Arnaud Massey.

After a period of neglect and following the end of the First World War, renowned golf course designer, Dr Alastair MacKenzie was commissioned to design and supervise the reconstruction of the South Cliff golf course.

Today, the course falls in to two parts, divided by the main road from Scarborough to Filey. The seaward side of the golf course is at one with the elements and represents a true test of links golf; whilst, the holes of the land-ward side of the course are laid out at the bottom of a rolling valley stretching southwards into the hills and on the slope of the ridge to the east.

The South Cliff clubhouse was later added in 1930 and the Professional Shop in 1937.

With a WHS course rating of 70.6 and slope rating of 128, the course plays as a Par 69 and measures 6,212 yards from the white tees with fine views across the town and to the Malvern Hills from the upper holes.

Mature trees line the fairways on most holes, calling for accuracy from the tees and the approach whilst, excellent greens and strategically placed bunkers make the challenge all the more difficult.

Established in 1887, Cleveland Golf Club features a true championship links golf course. Porters Park Golf Club dates back to 1899 when it became one of the first golf courses on the north side of London. At this time, the golf club was founded in the grounds of the local ‘Porters’ mansion. Today the only remaining evidence of Porters mansion is an underground ice house located near the third fairway.

The clubs Parkland golf course’s early design was heavily influenced by John Henry ‘JH’ Taylor one of the great golf course architects, and Charles Kenneth Cotton who went on to become one of the UK’s most distinguished post-war golf course architects.

A PREMIER PARKLAND COURSE SINCE 1899

Picturesque, tree-lined fairways using the natural contours of the land, magnificent greens and a brook meandering through several holes are features of today’s Porters Park golf course which has hosted Open Championship Qualifying event on six occasions.

A true test of golf where accuracy and course management are essential ingredients for an enjoyable round.

The clubhouse at Porters Park was damaged by fire in 1954 with much of the original structure having to be rebuilt. A large extension of the clubhouse facilities was completed in 1990 enhancing the Club’s facilities for members and guests alike, whilst offering spectacular views across the course from the lounge and, restaurant and bar areas.

Today, the clubhouse combines tradition and modern ambience. During refurbishments and upgrades, the Club is careful to retain the clubhouse’s character that has been enjoyed by so many through the years.

Waterlooville Golf Club

It is also home to HMNB Portsmouth; an operational Royal Navy base – nicknamed Pompey, a name it shares with the wider city and football team, Portsmouth FC.

At the heart of Portsmouth is its historic dockyard, home to the Lord Nelson and the Mary Rose. The waterfront and harbour skyline is dominated by the 170 metre tall, Spinnaker Tower – one of the UK’s largest structures.

From sight-seeing to fun-filled nightlife, the waterfront City of Portsmouth has it all. Fantastic things to do all year round and an action packed program of events make the location an ideal destination a break.

Originally laid out in 1907, the course at Waterlooville underwent a series of improvements in 2019. Projects included the implementation of a new irrigation system with Topturf replacing the previous irrigation with a modern system, allowing greenkeepers to water a greater area whilst minimising water wastage - keeping the playing surfaces at peak condition all season. This then culminated in Waterlooville being Hampshire Golf Club of the year by Your Golfer Magazine. The £240k project saw the installation of new pipework, as well as a new pumphouse featuring two pumps.

Durabunker were also instructed by the club to renovate twenty-three of the course’s bunkers. Twenty-three bunkers were then renovated with two of the larger bunkers being split into two new bunkers each - a positive feature giving definition and shape to the holes.

Waterlooville Golf Club welcomes visitors, society groups and corporate guests throughout the year, seven days a week. With a golf course that is always presented in an excellent condition and renowned hospitality and catering, a golf day at Waterlooville is both enjoyable and truly memorable.

The Par, Birdie and Eagle packages can be tailored to meet the needs of the visiting group with prices starting from as little as £38.35 per golfer. Whilst, special rates are available for groups of 8 golfers or more, the club has ample space to accommodate meetings of up to 130.

The par 71 golf course measures 6,359 yards from the championship white tees and is a fairly flat course although it does provide a challenging but fair test for golfers of abilities. The Ashton & Lea course requires excellent course management skills as players plot their way around the picturesque parkland layout with small and elusive greens that are ranked among the best in the north west of England.

Relax and unwind

The present clubhouse at Ashton & Lea Golf Club was built in the 1993/94 season. The 19th hole features a well-stocked bar and offers daily set menus allowing members and visitors to enjoy a tasty one course, two course or three course meal in delightful surroundings.

We now have ‘The Hub’ model which is widely used on the Continent and in the United States and also have a fully functioning halfway house as well as a new young vibrant catering team. The Club is planning to become largely selfsufficient with electricity already coming from solar panels and in 2020 we installed our own borehole for water to be supplied to the course

Seahouses Golf Club has been a centre of golfing excellence in Northumberland since it was founded in 1913. Originally designed by Alnmouth greenkeeper, George Rochester, the traditional northern golf course features two of the most prestigious par three’s in the North of England.

Dore & Totley GC is located in the Sheffield suburb of Bradway, close to the Derbyshire Peak District. The course saw major investment in May 2005 with five completely new holes added, and the redesign of the remaining holes to create the current yardage of 6,576 yards from the championship, white tees with a par of 72.

Golf was first played in Ganton in the summer of 1891. The course was originally laid out by St Andrews’ Tom Chisolm, and has since been touched by most leading golf course architects over the years, including Braid, Colt, Fowler, Taylor and MacKenzie. ENVILLE GOLF CLUB

Enville Golf Club near Stourbridge in the County of South Staffordshire is an R & A and England Golf Championship venue hosting the R&A Girls U16 amateur Championships between 2021 to 2023 and England Golfs Logan Trophy in 2023.

Tucked away near the village of Enville, the first nine holes and clubhouse of Enville Golf Club were erected in 1935 with a second nine added and the course extended to eighteen holes in 1938. Two further loops of nine were added and, in 1983 the 36 holes were re-laid out to create two eighteen hole golf courses.

Today, the two golf courses, which are set in pleasant, undulating country; partly heath and partly woodland attract a tremendous amount of visitors each year many of whom return.

Both courses, the par 72 Highgate course, and the Lodge a par 71 golf course are maintained to the highest of standards and boast 36 uniquely contrasting holes. Presenting a test for even the most accomplished of golfer in idyllic conditions for golf, the typical English heathland golf course offers play all-year-round thanks to excellent drainage.

Tranquil surroundings in the West Midlands

The Your Golfer Magazine team were lucky enough to sample The Highgate course for themselves.

A real gem of a golf course, the Highgate is a blend of picturesque heathland and woodland course; the tees are extremely well cared for, fairways are shaped to perfection and can be fairly linksy in places allowing for good run and the putting surfaces have gained a reputation for being among the best in the area, fast and smooth with subtle contours.

A lot of the holes are tree-lined, and with the run many players will reach position using a fairway wood on a good proportion of the holes. There are four par five's on the Highgate with the ninth hole, a monster of a hole at 586 yards off the yellow tees. The course also features four wonderfullydesigned par three's and a couple of exciting par fours back to back on the 12th and 13th.

The Highgate back nine is arguably more difficult that the front nine which prepares players for the challenge ahead.

Both golf courses, the Highgate and Lodge call for excellent course management and accuracy from the tees to shoot a low score.

The Enville clubhouse and spike bar facilities are available seven days a week. Offering a wide range of local ales and beers, as well as the locally brewed and award-winning, Enville Ale the clubhouse is the ideal place to relax and unwind pre or post round.
